The library, which started operations in 1915, is supported by a county tax, the board of supervisors being empowered by law to include the support of a county free library in the tax levy, the money being spent for books, transportation, branch expenses, supplies and maintenance at headquarters. The library now serves twenty-nine schools and twenty branches. In small communities the branches are usually found in a store or post office, while in larger communities reading rooms are maintained and supplied with books, magazines and newspapers. The library is a particular benefit to the schools, which receive a service impossible to get from their own shelves, for no school can afford to own all the books for reference and research work that a teacher may desire for the pupils. Through the library and its branches books on all subjects are available to any resident of the county. If a book is desired that is not in a branch collection, it is sent from the county free library headquarters; or, if not found there, it is supplied from the state library, all shipments being free to the borrower. The San Mateo County Free Library has about thirty-eight thousand volumes for general reading, and a very large school collection of supplementary textbooks, maps, charts, globes, victrola records and pictures. It has about six thousand, five hundred cardholders and an annual circulation of about seventy-four thousand volumes. The books are circulated to the remote corners of the county and have also been sent to the lighthouse off the coast. Miss Edna Holroyd, who is so capably filling the position of librarian of the San Mateo County Free Library, was born in San Francisco, California, and secured her elementary education in the public schools of Berkeley. Later she took a course in library science at the State Library School and possesses a certificate from the state board of librarians. Her first position was as assistant county librarian of Monterey county, after which she was county librarian of Tuolumne county, and in December, 1921, she came to Redwood City and has since occupied her present position. She has proven the right person for the place, her previous training and her qualities of character well fitting her for the work. Courteous and accommodating, and with a comprehensive grasp of the splendid opportunities for service which she is able to render, she has earned high commendation, and has won many warm friends since coming to this city.
