A. Gaylord, living a couple of miles south west of town in Paradise Valley, had ended his life by his own hand. The facts as we learn them are that he arose about 3 o’clock and left the house, his mother was awakened at the time but soon dropped asleep again. About 5:30 she arose but found no fire started, she went out to search for her son and soon found him lying unconscious in the tank house with a wound in the head. The neighbors were aroused and word sent to the coroner, who arrived about noon and impaneled the following jury: P. R. Bone, T. S. Merrill, Mr. Dyer, Mr. Froemke, Charles Hatch, Lou Kelley, J. Mathison, C. H. Barrett, W. S. Burr, Karl Bagwell, and R. S. Manning. The verdict by the jury was death caused by a gunshot wound inflicted by his own hand while in a state of temporary insanity. Mr. Gaylord was injured some months ago by the overturning of a disk or harrow with which he was working on the hillside, the injury affecting his spine. Mental disturbances resulted from this, which were aggravated by other troubles, and this, it is believed, led him to seek deliverance in death. Mr. Gaylord left his mother, a sister, and a young son to mourn his loss. He was a member of the M. W. A., Royal Neighbors and Odd Fellows. It is reported that he carried insurance in two of these orders to the amount of $5000, in favor of his mother. The funeral service was in charge of Rev. J. A. VanAnds, conducted at the house. The Morgan Hill Camp 7877, M. W. A., participated in the service. The interment took place in Mount Hope Cemetery Thursday afternoon.” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ca/santaclara/obits/g/gaylord49nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/cafiles/ File size: 2.3 Kb
