She had been at the home of one of her daughters in Arizona, where she continued to grow weaker and wanted to come home. The two daughters accompanied her and kindly ministered to her, remaining at the bedside, and assisted by Fred Bierman, did everything that loving hands could do, but she was called home. Though not robust, she was energetic and perhaps too much so for her strength. She was kind, loving, and in the midst of pain was patient and cheerful. Mary Emily O’Neal was born in Arkansas in 1854 and, with her parents, came across the plains to Nevada when but two or three years of age. At the age of 17 she was married to Theodore Shirley. To this union was born four children, three of whom are yet living; two daughters, Mrs. C. H. Farnsworth of Metcalf, Arizona, and Mrs. G. S. Logan of Giln [Gila Bend?], Arizona, and one son, Herman J. Shirley of Stockton. Fred Bierman, whom Mrs. Shirley reared from youth, has cared for her as a son would care for a mother. There are three grandchildren. In early life the deceased identified herself with the M. E. Church and in 1909 transferred to the Christian church in San Jose, later identified herself with the church here. She has lived in Morgan Hill for six years. One sister aged 83, is living in San Jose. Services were conducted in the Christian church, Dr. Gillespie officiating. Interment was in Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland.
