The passing away of Mrs. Stephens makes on more vacant place in the rapidly thinning ranks of the veterans of the Civil War and of the pioneers of this Valley. He was a member of Co E 18th Wisconsin Infantry and was always active in all gatherings of his comrades and will be best remembered by many of his neighbors and our older residents as he appeared in his G.A.R. uniform on Memorial Days, and other patriotic occasions. Mr. Stevens was one of the very first settlers in t his immediate vicinity having located here 25 years ago, before the town of Morgan Hill had come into existence. In the early days he engaged in the real estate business as well as ranching and few there were in the community he did not know. Three years ago he moved to Santa Clara but retained his property interests here and made frequent visits to attend to his business affairs and visit his child and grandchild. George Stephens was born in Derbyshire, England and came to the United States with his parents in 1851. He lived in Wisconsin and Minnesota until coming to California 26 years ago. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Jennie E. Stephens, and two daughters, Mrs. W. W. Turner and Mrs. N. T. Thomas, and one son William H. Stephens, all of this place. A daughter Mrs. Mary Neary, and a son, Charles Stephens, passed away some years ago. Additional Comments: George was married twice. From his first marriage, William H. Stephens (b. about 1866 in Minnesota) and Lillian Alameda Stephens (b. May 27, 1868 in Minnesota, d. November 15, 1925 in Santa Clara Co., CA) were born. Lillian married William Wallace Turner and they are buried in Mount Hope Cemetery. George and his second wife, Jennie, had at least three children: Mary J. Stephens, born about 1876, died July 14, 1911 in Santa Clara County, married Thomas Neary; Charles H., born 1880, died 1904; and Laura A., born February 12, 1887, died January 02, 1919, married Newton Thomas. Jennie, Charles, Laura, and Laura's daughter, Effie, are all in the same plot with George in the Mount Hope Cemetery.
