Early last Sabbath morning, Dec. 4th, Charles Herbert Stephens closed his eyes in death. He had been ill for a long time and was not surprised at the approach of the grim messenger. He was a young man with the great field of life before him. He was born in Winnebago county, Wisconsin, June 9, 1880 and lacked but five days of being 24 years and seven months of age. About one-half of his life has been spent at the home near Morgan Hill where he had a large circle of friends among the young people of the community. Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Geo Stephens, he leaves to mourn his departure, three sisters, Mrs. Laura A. Thomas, Mrs. Lillian A. Turner, and Mrs. Mary J. Nary, all living near here, and a brother, William Stephens, living in Minnesota and a large number of other relatives in this county. The funeral which was very largely attended took place from the United Presbyterian church on Tuesday afternoon. The sermon was preached by Rev W. E. Gordon who voiced and impressive message to young people, The company attending the body to Mount Hope Cemetery was one of the largest ever seen here on such an occasion. The floral gifts and decorations at both the church and the grave were remarkably abundant and appropriate. Everyone seemed to have brought a floral offering which must have appealed most tenderly and strongly to the heart of the mother who has always been so thoughtful and liberal in the ministration with flowers when others were bereaved. Now when her own heart is sad the quiet flowers carried to her the message of loving sympathy. The kindliest thoughts of the whole community are given to the bereaved family. Additional Comments: Charles Herbert Stephens was the son of George Stephens and his second wife, Jane "Jennie" Elizabeth Stephens. Charles's half-brother, William and half-sisters Lillian Amanda Stephens Turner and Mary Jane Stephens Neary, were the children of George and his first wife, Mary Delia Wetmur, b. May 13, 1847 in NY, died Oct 16, 1875, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. His fill sister was Laura Amanda Stephens Thomas.
