In the Santa Cruz book of deaths 1834 to 1894, there is this entry:

#2615: John Motter* (Mutter)

On November 3, 1871 I gave ecclesiastical burial to the body of deceased John 
Motter husband of Elisabeth Peipher.  He was 36 years of age, native of Baden 
or Baclen, He received all of the spiritual helps.  Fr. Joaquin Adam.
