Lewis HARTUNG was caved on in the Empire or Meyers
mine at one o'clock Saturday morning [10/6/1894] and
it was 25 hours before he could be extricated, albeit
every effort made by 16 men, working 10 minute shifts,
old timber and sliding loose ground held him down
while most of the time his head was uncovered.  He
talked much while the deadly pressure lay on him, but
he died at half past 12 o'clock before being taken
out.  Mr. HARTUNG was 45 years of age and leaves a
wife and six children, his wife being too sick to go
to the mine to see him.  (10/13/1894)
