DAVIS.—This gentleman was born November 22, 1852, at Greenport, Long Island. When he was two years of age his mother died, and he lived with his grandparents for three years, and six years with J. C. Cole of Duen, Connecticut. At the age of eleven he started for California, via the Horn, to join his father in San Francisco, who had come to the coast in 1855. Charles reached his destination in April, 1865. In the same year he began to learn the butcher's trade, which he worked at two years. Since that time he has lived in many parts of the state. In the spring of 1879 he made his home in Randolph, Sierra county, where he owns a comfortable house, and is at present engaged in logging in the vicinity.
