J. MCGUIRE was born in Cambria county, Pennsylvania, July 11, 1838. In 1852 he began work in a cabinet shop, and continued at this labor for three years, learning the trade. In 1857 he went to Iowa county, Iowa, and followed farming two years. In May, 1859, he started for California, across the plains, and reached Sierra county in October. He soon went to mining at Deadwood, and was there till 1863, when he came to Downieville. Here he did carpentering until i870, when he opened a shop for all kinds of wood-work and repairing. He was married in 1874, to Miss E. Cruikshank of Yuba county, by whom he has had two children, one of whom is living.
