At these sites, only pre- 1925 graves were surveyed. At all other sites, all legible graves were surveyed regardless of date. This project began after years of lamenting the fact that history was being lost by the ravages of time, the elements, and in some instances man, with the disappearance of headstones in Sierra County's pioneer cemeteries. While originally conceived to survey just those closed cemeteries in former townsites, I then decided to include all Sierra County cemeteries in order to provide a complete genealogical resource. For those contemporary cemeteries, 1925 was chosen as a cut off date for records on those interred after that date are accessible through either local or statewide death registration records which began in 1905. Additionally, this survey only represents those markers in place and legible as of 1994-1997. Individual cemetery districts may have more complete records of actual burials, marked or not
