The bridge was located within a mile of Downieville [Sierra County], and formed the crossing of Gold Lake trail; the flume was some fifteen feet above and immediately over the bridge, and at the time of the casualty was filled with ice and water. Mrs. Conteur, who lived on the middle fork, was crossing the bridge with her husband when the structure fell, and was hit upon the head by a piece of timber. Her husband was slightly hurt. The unfortunate woman died on Monday [January 10].” END Additional Comments: Sacramento Daily Union, January 18, 1859 (Tuesday), Page 4, Column 1.
