Funeral services for Benjamin Harrison Fairchild, 88, of Yreka, an authourity on the Modoc War who remembered the peace parleys in his childhood, will be held at 2 PM tomorrow in Girdner's Funeral Chapel with the Rev Harold Colemaan officiating. Gravside services will be conducted by the Yreka Odd Fellows Lodge in Evergreen Cemetery. Born in Arkansas Fairchild was born in Arkansas on August 17,1869, and was brought to the John Fairchild Ranch east of Dorris, Siskiyou County, at eh age of 4. The ranch was the center of of the peace negotiations between the Modocs and the army which ended the war in 1873. He later moved to Yreka and spent his active years mining in the vicinity of Humbug Creek. Between 1951 and 1956, as membership chairman of the Siskiyou Historical Society, he brought membership from 632 to 1,133, at that time the highest historical society membership in the state. He was honored with a reception in the county museum when membership reached 1,000. He was considered the most active member of the society. Fairchild Street Since the death of his wife, Marie, in 2953, he lived alternately with his children or in his Yreka home on Fairchild Street, which was named for him. He lapsed into a simi coma on September 4th and was taken to the Siskiyou General Hospital in Yreka where he died Friday. Survivors include his daughters, Mrs Carl R McConnell of Etna, Siskiyou County, Ada Knaackstedt of Medford, Oregon and a son, Benjamin H of Ft Jones, Siskiyou County.
