C. Wolfe, Editor MARKHAM, Edwin: Writer, lecturer and reader. Born Oregon City, Oregon, April 23, 1852. His father died when he was about four years of age, and in 1857 he went with his mother who settled on a cattle range in the Suisun Hills, midway between San Francisco and Sacramento. Here his boyhood was spent herding his mother's sheep and cattle, and a few months each year he attended the country school. At eighteen he entered the State Normal School at San Jose, and later finished his school work at Santa Rosa Academy, California. He was principal of the Observation School of the State University, a school at that time located in Oakland. It was here he completed his poem, "The Man With the Hoe." a poem that took its early form in San Jose. This poem was printed in the San Francisco "Examiner" in 1899, translated into many languages and reproduced in more than ten thousand newspapers and magazines. Among his early writings are "A Dream of Chaos," "Mendocino Memory," "The Joy of Life in the Hills." He has published four volumes of verse: "The Man With the Hoe and Other Poems," "Lincoln and Other Poems," "The Shoes of Happiness and Other Poems," "The Gates of Paradise and Other Poems." He is the author of ""California, the Wonderful." "Virgilia," "Homing Heart," "Peace Over Africa," "Semiramis" and others. His book "Lincoln and Other Poems" is dedicated to his wife in these terms: "To Catherine Markham, the touch of whose fine spirit is on many of these pages." He is a member of the Masons, American Institute of Arts and Letters, honorary President Poetry Society of America, Was married in 1897 to Anne Catherine Murphy.
