In 1867 he began an apprenticeship in the bricklayer's department in the Mare Island Navy Yard, where he was employed till elected City Marshal by the Republican party in 1878. Mr. McDonald's father died in Vallejo, Sept. 19th, 1875; his mother is still living, however, and makes her home with him. He married, May 29th, 1870, Miss Mary Brown, by whom he has two children: Amelia, born April 8, 1871, and William, born February 10, 1875.
