As of October 1937, Carlton had been ill for 9 years with an incurable heart ailment. He had a heart attack in Crocker Book Store, Sacremento, Ca, and died in route to the hospital. Carlton was a resident of Vacaville, CA, nearly 55 years. He was born in Napa County in 1877. His family moved to Vacaville in 1889 when he was about 12 and his father opened a dry goods store. He attend Vacaville Schools. He attended Oakland Military Academy. Graduated in 1908 from the University of California at Berkley. He was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He sang with the Glee Club and De Koven Club in school. He was a Lieutenant in the Vacaville National Guard and served during the earthquake and fire of 1906. He belonged to the following clubs/lodges: Masonic Lodge, Royal Arch Masons, Knights Templar, Scottish Rite, Islam Temple Shrine, Thirty-second Degree Mason, Order of Eastern Star, and Union League of San Francisco.
