W. Crystal End Came Without Warning Thursday Morning He Was a Successful Business Man and President of the Bank of Vacaville Death came without warning to George W. Crystal Thursday morning, and this community, in which he so long made his home and which held him in the greatest esteem has not yet recovered from the shock occasioned by the sad news. Mr. Crystal had been slightly indisposed for two or three days, but was not confined to the house nor had he consulted a doctor. He retired as usual on Wednesday evening, and apparently passed a quiet night. About 7 o’clock Thursday morning, his son, Carl C. Crystal, heard a noise as though his father had fallen, and entering the latter’s bedroom found him on the floor. Death was almost instantaneous. Mr. Crystal was a native of Indiana and 71 years of age. He was married in early manhood to Sarah B. McWilliams at Des Moines, Iowa, and the young couple soon after came across the plains to Oregon. They removed to California in 1885, settling first in Napa. In 1889 they came to Vacaville, where Mr. Crystal opened a dry goods store, and under his capable management the business steadily grew, until he had the largest general merchandise store in town. In 1908 Mr. Crystal retired from the mercantile business and devoted his entire time to banking, he having been the director of the Bank of Vacaville for a number of years. In January 1916, he was elected president of that bank and re-elected last January. Mr. Crystal is survived by one son, Carl C. Crystal, his wife having died in June, 1911. He also leaves a brother James Crystal of Washington, D. C; and the following half sisters and brothers: Mrs. A. J. Bolter of Dixie, Wash.; Mrs. William Mills of Grand Mound, Wash.; Mrs. G. W. Read of Napa; Niss Nettie Crystal of Alameda and E. C. Crystal of Vacaville. Mr. Crystal united with the Christian Church when a young man and throughout his life lived up to the faith he professed. As a citizen he was identified with every movement for the advancement of the community, and his advice was often sought and freely given in business affairs. As a member of the board of trustees he served the town faithfully for a number of years, giving his time cheerfully to the duties of the office. His death is sincerely mourned by a wide circle of friends in every walk of life, who had learned to admire his worth and appreciate his sterling character during the many years they had come in intimate business relationship with him. The funeral will be held from his late residence on Main street, Saturday at 2 p. m.
