Perazzo pbperazzo@comcast.net September 22, 2004, 10:26 pm “Winters Express,” Saturday, November 8, 1890 L.A. Mathson Jumped to His Death L.A. Mathson, a warehouseman of Dixon, after spending Sunday drinking and fighting, concluded to leave the scene of his debauch, and armed with a bottle of the same he had been drinking, boarded the Oregon express, which passes Dixon at 10 p.m., bound for Tremont, a station at which that train does not stop. He was informed by the conductor that the train did not stop at Tremont, but partially crazed by his day's debauch, Mathson concluded to stop anyhow, and deliberately walked out and jumped off. The train was running at the rate of 40 miles an hour, and the conductor knowing the fatal result of such a leap, stopped the train and picked up the lifeless body of the poor unfortunate and took it to Davisville, from whence it was sent back to Dixon in the morning. The deceased leaves a sister in San Francisco. Additional Comments: Submitted with the permission of the “Winters Express,” 312 Railroad Ave., Winters, CA 95694.
