(1880) Kessing, Clemens. The subject of this sketch was born in Germany, January 22,1839. In 1844 his parents emigrated to the United States, settling in Cincinnati, Ohio, where Mr. Kessing was educated, and from which place he moved to California, in 1858. After three months' residence in San Francisco, he came to Santa Rosa, arriving in September, 1858. Here he at once joined partnership with Mr. Russell, under the style of Kessing & Russell, carrying on a general merchandising business till April, 1859, when the firm was changed to Kessing Brothers, Mr. Russell retiring. Again in November, 1863, the firm was changed to Kessing & Tupper, which continued until August, 1877, when the subject of this sketch bought the entire interest, and is at the present writing the sole proprietor, doing business on Main street.
