Cypress Hill Memorial Park, Petaluma, Sonoma County, CA Submitted by Christopher Wasden, Eagle Scout Project 21 Oct 2006 (complete) This includes all of the names at the cemetery for which information can be found. This file is part of the California Tombstone Project http://www.usgwtombstones.org/california/californ.html These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organizations. Persons or organizations desiring to use this material for non-commercial purposes, MUST obtain the written consent of the contributor, OR the legal representative of the submitter, and contact the listed USGenWeb archivist with proof of this consent. In an attempt to minimize subjective interpretations, the following protocol was developed to be followed whenever any such situations occurred: 1. Never record any assumptions about any particular marker. If a surname was not readily apparent, one was not recorded. If a date only listed the time that they lived, no attempt was made to calculate birth or death dates. It was felt that to try and extrapolate the information to assume that we could generate data that wasn't definitely there was to introduce a level of subjectivity that caused many more problems than they solved. 2. Whenever a stone was encountered that was illegible, that marker was not recorded – there was no definite data to glean from that marker. We bypassed a number of decayed stones, and numerous, badly-aged wooden markers, because of this criteria. 3. When characters from a foreign language were inscribed upon the marker – Hebrew, Chinese, and Arabic, to name them specifically – they were not recorded. I understand that this introduces an element of inaccuracy into the information, but there is no easy way (outside of photographs) to record these types of glyphs into a database, and the prospect of these characters being represented inaccurately was considered adequate rationale for this decision. Spanish words, being composed of Roman characters, were not subject to this rule since those characters could be recorded with accuracy. 4. We made our best effort to search through the entire cemetery plot and discovered a number of obscure markers in areas overgrown by vegetation. In spite of this, I would not be surprised if there are still some markers that are lying hidden in the environs there. I also would not be surprised if we therefore missed some of these obscured markers. I do not know how to compensate for this possibility except to continue going out and searching and clearing back the encroaching brush. I do not mean to imply that the cemetery is not well-maintained, but some of the older areas get less attention than do the endowed areas; that is a fact of life in a cemetery. 5. Over the year that this project was undertaken, we noticed that several new grave-sites had been created, and we quickly perceived that our efforts were being outdated even before we finished the project. There seems to be no plan for the maintenance of the database in the future, unless somebody is assigned to keep track of these. The management of the cemetery seemed to have no current record of who had been or was being buried there, so it seemed unlikely that we could assume that this information could be derived from their records.
