Resident 80 yrs, Drove Team in Father's Caravan as boy of 13 Calvin A. Carlton, who 80 years ago as a boy of 13 drove an ox team across the plains in a caravan captained by his father, died in a hospital here yesterday after a long illness. The caravan that brought the Carlton's to Sonoma Co. was one of the most famous of early day prairie schooner trains and included the Dillon Party, which settled Dillon's Beach. The 93-year-old pioneer had resided near Santa Rosa since the family's arrival in the west and for many years operated a ranch. His father was the late Austen Carlton, one of the most widely known of the early settlers here in as a result of his success in leading the large caravan safely to California. Carlton was born in Tennessee. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Emma Mae Jones of Santa Rosa; a son, Arthur Carlton of San Francisco, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Stump of Saratoga and Mrs. Margaret Coon of Idaho. Funeral services will be held Monday in Welti's chapel by the Christian Science Church, with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery.
