He was a native of Bourbon county, Kentucky, and was one of the Kentuckians who fought under Harrison in the war of 1812. In 1846 he emigrated to Oregon, afterwards coming to California, when the gold excitement broke out. For many years he was a member of the Board of Supervisors of Sonoma county."
