STUART.—The part taken by the Stuart family (father and two sons) in the development of the fruit interests of Stanislaus county, California, during the last few years, is so important that it demands special notice and is therefore referred to in the portion of this volume devoted to general history. Some special mention of these gentlemen becomes of general interest on account of their connection with the county's advancement, however, and we present the following sketch of Joseph F. Stuart. Joseph F. Stuart was born in Silverville, Solano county, California, October 20, 1864, his parents being Daniel S. and Lydia H. (Philpot) Stuart. He was reared in Solano county, and educated in the schools of Dixon and at Napa College, Napa, California. His education completed, he remained at the Solano county home one year, and then spent about a year with his brother, A. Y. Stuart, on the wheat ranch located about six or seven miles east of Oakdale, Stanislaus county. He then went to Rio Vista, Solano county, where his father had a ranch, and, on account of the latter's illness, the management of affairs there devolved on him. Then his father sold this ranch, and Joseph went back to the home place at Dixon, but after two or three weeks there he again came to Stanislaus county (1887), and rented land belonging to other members of the family. In 1890 he bought twenty-five acres lying along the Stanislaus river and in the vicinity of Oakdale. He has since planted it all, except three acres, to fruit, the varieties being peaches, apricots and prunes principally, with a few Muscat and Tokay grapes. He also conducts a nursery business, and in the season of 1892 placed 3,000 salable trees on the market. He is now maintaining a nursery stock one acre in extent, on his land under the bluff of the Stanislaus. This land is splendidly adapted to fruit, and this fact, together with the Stuart reputation in the fruit and nursery business already established, has not a little to do with the success encountered. It may also be said in this connection that Mr. Stuart, with his brother A. V., assisted in making the first start in fruit-tree planting, on a scale worthy of mention, in the territory tributary to Oakdale. Mr. Stuart was married in this county, October 9, 1889, to Miss Jennie E. Mann, a native of this State, born in Solano county, and daughter of D. L. Mann, who is now a resident of Stanislaus county, living about a mile and a half south of Oakdale. Mr. and Mrs. Stuart have two children, Arthur and Ernest.
