Macchiarella and Viola Geary Odell as part of the California Tombstone Transcription Project. This special rural cemetery contains a blend of modern with historic grave sites. Although many graves are worn and unreadable, the earliest grave showing is Grave No. 218, Mary E. Croson, Daughter of E. T. & A. Croson, died 6 Mar 1857, aged 9 months, 18 days. The graveyard is is located behind the historic “Old La Grange Schoolhouse Building” (California State Historic Listing Building #79003461) at Grange Rd. and Floto St., La Grange, Stanislaus County, California. For a reference satellite location map see: http://wikimapia.org/4630156/La-Grange-Municipal-Cemetery. Visitors to this cemetery may wish to also visit the historic St. Louis Mission Cemetery across the street, the Pioneer French Cemetery nearby, along with the “old west” La Grange museum, fire house, saloon and hotel. Directions to the cemetery: From Merced, California, exit G Street on California State Highway 99, Turn east on G Street, continue until G Street becomes Old Snelling Highway. Travel 15 minutes on winding prairie road toward foothills, turn right on Highway 59, 1 mile to Snelling, past town of Snelling turn Left on County Road (known as the La Grange Road). Travel 11 miles to La Grange. Turn Right at 4-cornered stop sign, 1 mile to La Grange, turn right at Post Office on Floto Street, top of hill on right is the school house. This graveyard sits directly behind the school house. (Across the street on the left is the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery.) Please note that some family stones are located close together but within a number of rows so they do not appear in the un-alphabetized listing as if they are next to each other, when, in fact, they are. When headstones are combined, as in a family or married couple plots, they are so noted or are "joined" without paragraph returns. If separate stones, the names are separated by paragraphs. Most fraternal order icons are noted with capital letters in quotes, e.g. "G" for Odd Fellows. When full specific birth and death dates are inscribed, the dates have been transposed to "standard" for research purposes, e.g. "January 1, 1930" becomes "1 Jan 1930" in this transcription. The stones are transcribed here from top to bottom as the readings appear on the stone. Every effort has been taken to carefully transcribe headstones and grave markers, however, errors may appear and apologies are respectfully given. Please let us know if you know of corrections needed to this record. Lesliemak@aol.com Note: Please see alternate alphabetized names list at the bottom of the graveyard transcription. This cemetery was walked from left to right in the left section only. LA GRANGE MUNICIPAL CEMETERY ON APRIL 9, 2004: LEFT SECTION: 1.
