Located on private property lying north of Hwy 108 at Langworth Rd., about 4 miles west of Oakdale HISTORY: Henry Langworthy came to Stanislaus County, probably in 1858. His first recorded land purchase was on February 5, 1859. This is the date he purchased the land that belonged to Peachey, Halleck et al. This was part of the original 'eight square leagues' that is called the Thompson grant. The details of this rancho are carefully detailed in his deed. According to the 1860 Stanislaus County census, Henry was born in Vermont and had as wife Eliza who was born in Ohio. At the time of the 1860 census the family is living in the jurisdiction of Buena Vista. The census areas were large and few in number-Buena Vista, Branch, Emory, Empire, Oatvale, and Orestimba. Yes Oatvale was the name of the area between Buena Vista and Branch. Mr. Langworthy made additional purchases of land in 1863. First, from Thomas F. Snedigar on March 17,1863 and then on May 30,1863 from L.J. Morrow. The community of Langworth grew, soon acquiring all the comforts of home- a general merchandise store with a dance hall on the upper floor was soon joined by a post office, shoe store, homes and the ever necessary burial ground. In the 1867 Pacific Coast Business Directory, Langworth has this information : Langworth, Stanislaus Co. P.O. on s side of Stanislaus River, 25 miles s e of Stockton and 16 miles below Knight's Ferry. [The following businesses were listed] Bunds J. C., general merchandise Fairbanks J. G., manufacturer of harvesting machines Hamlin T. T., attorney at law and superintendent common schools Hendricks N. W., manufacturer brooms Hughes William N., hotel proprietor and ferryman Langworthy H., postmaster and general produce Stewart S. F., mechanic Watts Isaac, mechanic In the 1872-73 Pacific Coast Business Directory, Langworth is again mentioned, but Henry Langworthy is not listed. He is also not listed in the 1870 census. The 1883 Pacific Coast Directory only lists two business people for Langworth, E.R. Crawford, farmer, and A. Gardner, blacksmith. The advent of the railroad in 1871 brought a new life to the area named Oakdale. Many of the buildings, stores and homes, were moved from Langworth. The remnants of the cemetery are located in a grove of trees on the Van Norman property about 1/2 mile north of the intersection of the highway and Langworth Road. In 1960 when the Downey High School History Club made their survey, there were a few stone markers, some of them broken, nearly all of them tipped over. Many of the graves were removed from Langworth and moved in to the newer cemeteries of Oakdale Oakdale Citizens and IOOF, later known as Oaklawn Memorial. The records do not show a burial for a Cottle, but the death of little Annie Francis Cottle at age 10, was the stated reason Francis Cottle donated the land for the Oakdale Citizens Cemetery. But he is reported to have said that he did not want to remove her body, because that would leave another family member alone at Langworth. So I suspect that there are two Cottles there, although we have found no proof of this. In addition to the survey of the Thomas Downey High School History Club in 1960 and the Daughters of the American Revolution survey of 1958, there is a letter written by H. Gordon White in May of 1933 telling about the markers at Langworth. ANDERSON Elizabeth, wife of Norman Anderson Died March 17,1874 Aged 53 yr, 11 mos. None knew her but to love her.
