Located at J and Fifth Streets in the city of Oakdale. 209 847-1189 HISTORY: It is said that Oakdale's second cemetery was established in 1883 as a result of the death of Annie Francis Cottle at age 10. The only daughter of Francis Marion and Harriet Kennedy Cottle, both of Oakdale pioneering families, died in 1882 as a result of measles. This caused great sadness to the Cottles and subsequently inspired the formation of the Oakdale Citizens Cemetery. An article in the October 2, 1996 Quasquicentennial Edition of the Oakdale Leader is quoted as follows. "Upon the death of Annie, the Cottles buried their daughter at the Langworth cemetery, but found the long distance from their Oakdale ranch very disheartening, according to grandson Francis 'Frank' Cottle. My grandparents grieved over her and decided they would give ground in Oakdale for a cemetery, said Cottle. Francis Sr. made his intentions known during a town meeting. He said that he would be willing to donate the land for the cemetery, but asked for help to start it, he added. To cover mapping of the cemetery and other costs, Francis Sr. asked each family to donate $10 and guaranteed each would receive a free cemetery plot for up to eight graves. Several families did and in 1883, the Cottles donated six acres, purchased earlier at $1 per acre from the U.S. government, for a cemetery. Cottle said it was named Oakdale Citizens Cemetery because it was for the citizens of the greater Oakdale area. Cottle said his grandfather picked the highest part of the sand hill cemetery for his family, and in 1896, Francis Sr.'s uncle Zora became the first Cottle buried in the family plot. Since moving their daughter's body would leave another corpse by itself, the Cottles never chose to remove Annie Francis' casket from the Langworth cemetery. Instead, a headstone marking her passing was erected at the Oakdale cemetery." In May of 1883, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. McLeod became the first person to be buried in the new Citizens Cemetery. The diary of Katherine Hoisholt records that it was a very hot day (106 ) for a funeral. The October 18, 1922 issue of the Oakdale Leader reported that the road in the cemetery running west to east had been paved . A circular plot in the center had been established and had been planted to grass and palms. On March 14, 1935, the Oakdale Leader reported that numerous proposals had been made for the city to assume control of the Citizens Cemetery. For many years the cemetery had been the especial care of public-spirited citizens who had also furnished the money to start the enterprise. But for a long time it had been felt that the burial place should be given permanent status in some way to insure perpetuity in the care of the graves. So the Oakdale Cemetery Association proposed to turn over its property to the city, along with cash balances on hand. The institution had long been self-supporting, and it was hoped that it would continue to do so under the operation of the municipality. On October 22, 1942, the Oakdale Leader reported that the entire estate of the late pioneer resident Peter M. Pederson had been left for the improvement and maintenance of the Citizens Cemetery. This estate included both cash and property. Part of this property included an almond orchard bordering the cemetery on the north side, which is presently held by the cemetery board for expansion. Also included in his estate was a commercial building in town, which is still providing income to the cemetery. Parenthesis are used to indicate two different additions in this area: 1) When only initials have been used in the records and we have ascertained the sex of the individual. Jones, M.G. (female). 2) Maiden names when clearly identified as such. Jones, Juanita (Moniz). Standard abbreviations of titles are used, Dr., Mrs., Rev., etc. Birth/Death date columns: The months are indicated by the first three letters. Jan 4,1900. Location column: Block BK Lot Grave GR Row Remarks column: If a given name has an initial for a maiden or middle name and it would not fit in the space allotted it is the first item in the remarks column.
