Hamner Eva 260514 p1 Mrs. Eva Hammer Goes Down in Patterson Main Canal; A Sunday afternoon outing was turned into tragedy when Mrs. Eva Hammer of Newman was drowned in the main canal of the Patterson Water company between the Poplar and Elm avenue bridges under somewhat puzzling circumstances. Mr. and Mrs. Hammer were spending the day with Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Forry and the party had donned bathing suits for a dip in the main canal, going to the new bridge at Poplar avenue not far above the pump station at the river. Here, according to the story told by the party, Hammer and Mrs. Forry decided to swim downstream to the Elm avenue bridge and told Hamner to drive around the road and pick them up at the point a half-mile distant, and bring them back. When they started, Mrs. Hamner was in the water and they told her to be sure and stay there and hold on to the bridge until they returned, since she could not swim. Forry then drove up Las Palmas and down Elm to the bridge and went upstream along the canal to meet the approaching swimmers, the booster system causing the water to flow west in the canal. As he met them they noticed someone coming along behind. At first they thought it was Harry Tchobanoglous who had planned to join them later, but soon saw it was Mrs. Hammer, floating down stream. She was hurriedly rescued and Dr. E. G. Allen was summoned from town as rapidly as possible, but first aid measures proved too late for any good. Just how the mishap occurred is not clear. Although the water was not much over waist deep, the stream was swift and the bottom slippery, so it is presumed that she lost her footing and was swept down with the current. The body was taken to Newman for interment there. The deceased was 48 years of age. The Hammers were in charge of the Westley hotel at the time it burned down last winter, but have since been residing at Newman. Hanson Lewis E 260129 p1 Death Ends Illness of L. E. Hanson; Lewis E. Hill's nephew was the hero of the tragic episode, giving his life in an effort to obtain help. Following the accident, the party clung to the side of the boat, which had room for a few at a time to rest on the bottom. Some could not swim however, and during the long night's struggle, they slipped off and were drowned one by one. Hill's nephew, however, was a good swimmer and finally struck off in an effort to reach shore but was drowned en route. Horr Henry B 261224 p1 Old-Time Resident of County Passes; Henry B. Horr, a resident of Stanislaus county for his entire life of 73 years, passed away Saturday at a Modesto hospital following a long illness. His death breaks a link with the earliest days of the pioneers in this county, as his father was one of the pioneer settlers, the old Horr ranch near Empire city on the Tuolumne being a familiar word since 1850. His oldest brother, Ben, was the first white child born in the county. A peculiar coincidence in connection with his death is the fact that it occurred on his 73 birthday, and two years ago, his brother, John, passed away, also on his 73 birthday. The family has held a ranch in Del Puerto canyon since the early days also, so they are pioneers of this district as well. The deceased was one of six brothers, three of whom, John, Frank and Charlie, are deceased while three, Ben of Palo Alto, Will B. of San Jose, and Albert P. of Patterson survive. Henry was making his home with the latter at the time of his death. The widow also survives. They have six children - Mrs. W. F. Hanell and Mrs. H. Sykes of Patterson; Mrs. Jose ? Livermore; and John ? Charley Horr. Funeral services were held ?day morning with Dr. ? presiding and interment at Del Puerto cemetery. Davis & Evans have charge of arrangements. Horr Roy 261008 p1 Driver in Dixon Stage Wreck Lived Here; ..??... that was crushed by the Overland Limited last week at Dixon, was a former Pattersonite, having resided here about 1920. He was known as Roy Horr here, being a son of Ben Horr and a nephew of Al and Henry B Horr, the latter two being local residents still. The crash, one of the most terrible in the history of stage transportation in this state, was the result of a most unusual combination of events. The crossing was guarded by gates but as they were being lowered for the passage of the limited, a car skidded in the rain and it was partially raised to allow the driver to bet back again. Just then the stage came up and went directly into the path of the train. Conflicting testimony disagrees as to whether Horr make the required stop before starting across, but most witnesses declare he did not. Nine of the ten occupants were killed outright or fatally injured, including Horr. A brother-in-law of Horr, the husband of the former Belva Horr, was killed several months ago in another auto accident at the Bay. His passing came but a short time after the death of his wife, who passed away in March of this year. Four children survive: Clarence Howard of Acampo.
