Brown Ada J 280727 p4 Pioneer Woman Is Dead at Age of 82 Years; One of two surviving women of the group that linked the present with the earliest pioneer days on the West Side passed away Friday when Mrs. Ada J. Brown died at Oakland at the age of 82. Mrs. J. R. McDonald of Sonoma is now the only woman living who resided in this section in the first years of its settlement by Americans. Brown Ed 280511 p1 Ed Brown of Patterson Dead; Westside Index; Stricken suddenly while at work in the barnyard of his ranch west of town, Ed Brown, long time local resident, passed away from a heart attack Wednesday afternoon. Except for complaining of a slight indisposition that morning, Brown had been following his daily routine and he had been absent from the house about half an hour when Mrs. Brown went to look for him and discovered him near the tank house where he had evidently gone for a drink, the dipper lying nearby. Medical aid was summoned but he had passed away. The deceased had resided on the same ranch for the past nineteen years and was a popular and widely known citizen whose sudden demise is a shock to all. Funeral services will be held today from the Shannon funeral chapel at Modesto, with interment in Modesto cemetery. Clark Lowell Dr 280127 p1 Dr. Lowell Clark Dies of Heart Attack Tuesday; Coming as a shock to all because of the suddenness of the event, Dr. Lowell Clark passed away Tuesday evening at his home, having just completed the evening meal. A heart attack was the cause, bringing death practically without warning, although he had been bothered to some extent previously. Held in the highest esteem by all who knew him, the news caused general sorrow in the community where he has spent the past twelve years. Dr. Clark was a native of Michigan and was 61 years of age at his passing. Beside the wife, Mrs. Linda Clark, a brother, Glen Clark, living in Michigan, is the only immediate relative, although Fred Clark has been raised by Dr. and Mrs. Clark in the position of a son. Funeral Tomorrow; A devoted follower of Masonry, Dr. Clark was a member of the Scottish Rite order, Colorado Consistory No. 1 of Denver; of El Jebel Temple of the Mystic Shrine of Denver, and of Patterson Lodge No. 488, F. & A. M. Edwards Robert 281130 p1 Pioneer Patterson Resident Passes; One of Patterson s pioneer business men passed away Monday morning when the influenza epidemic claimed Robert Edwards as its victim, pneumonia ensuing from which be failed to rally, following his removal to a Modesto hospital. Mr. Edwards came to Patterson in 1911 when the new community was just assuming shape and showed his faith in its future by erecting the Edwards building, one of the first brick structures in the new town. Fink William F 280615 p4 Pioneer Has Passed Away ; W. F. Fink. Prominent Citizen of Crows Landing; One more member of the fast diminishing ranks of pioneer settlers of the West Side was lost to the community Saturday afternoon and William Frederick Fink passed away at the family home here at the age of 73. Death followed close upon an emergency operation, performed by three surgeons Friday morning in a last and futile effort to save him, but his fast ebbing strength was not sufficient to withstand the shock. His illness had extended over the period of a year, gradually becoming worse as the weeks pasted. The funeral services were held at the family home Monday morning at 10:30 and a host of friends and relatives gathered to pay their last respects to their departed neighbor. A profusion of floral offerings from every section of the state hid the walls of the large living room where rested the casket draped in a beautiful blanket of carnations. Rev. H. D. Converse, pastor of the Presbyterian church conducted the services, using as its text the verse, "Let not thy heart be troubled." A quartet composed of Mesdames W. D. Bell, Robert and J. F. Stewart and Mr. S. Stanley, sang sacred songs. Messrs. S. W. Hudson, J A. Hayes, H. A. Kricke, H. C. Tucker, W. B. Atterbury and Dr. H. V. Armistead were the pallbearers. As the cortege moved to the family plot in the Newman cemetery, a line of autos neatly two miles in length, accompanied it. Mr. Fink was born in Marin County, Ohio, November 10, 1854. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Fink, moved to Minnesota in 1858, thence to Wisconsin in 1860, and finally to Crows Landing in 1873, he accompanying them on their journeys. In 1878, he began grain farming for himself, purchasing the land one mile northeast of town that still constitutes the home ranch. In August, 1881, Laura A, Piykin become his bride, and it was their good fortune to enjoy 47 years of unbroken marital happiness. All of his six children, George W., Ida, Esther, Clara, Eva and; Lloyd, remain to mourn his passing as well as all of his brothers and sisters, namely, Charles H. of Lodi, Jacob C. of Loma Linda, Julius D. and George A. of Crows Landing; and Mrs. Fredericka Dalby of Newman and Mrs. Warren of Ingomar. The passing of Mr. Fink is a distinct loss to the community, he had always taken a keen interest in civic enterprises, church work, education and politics, and gave them his active support while his health permitted. He had been a director of the First National Bank since its organization. He had so conducted his life and business affairs that he enjoyed the unqualified respect of all and his friends were each and everyone with whom in came in contact. He was an upright industrious man, a good neighbor, and the entire community, in addition to extending condolences to the family, mourn with them in their days of sorrow. Gates F H Dr 280720 p4 Westside Index, News Notes of Crows Landing; Death of Dr. Gates Physician and Druggist; One more shock was visited upon the community Sunday when Dr. F. H. Gates, for the past sixteen years a local physician, passed away in Modesto. Death followed upon a major abdominal operation performed last Tuesday morning, the end coming shortly after 8 o clock Sunday morning. The doctor rallied nicely immediately following the operation but Saturday morning he suffered a relapse and gradually sank until death released him from his suffering the following morning. Funeral services were held in the Sovern Funeral Home in Modesto Tuesday morning, after which the body was taken to San Francisco for interment in Mt. Olivet cemetery. Many local friends attended the service, to pay their last respects and the many and beautiful floral tokens gave evidence of the esteem in which the man was held by those who knew him. All business houses were closed during the funeral hour. Dr. Frank H. Gates was born in Sacramento 68 years ago, and after receiving his early education there, he attended the University of California, graduating from the affiliated medical school as a classmate of Dr. C. W. Evans. Shortly afterwards he became physician and surgeon of one of the largest passenger steamship lines operating between the Pacific Coast and the Orient, remaining in that capacity for years. Sixteen years ago he located here. succeeding to the practice and drug store business founded by Dr. Cothran. He was a forceful man, deeply conscientious in his profession, and hid a very sympathetic nature under a bluff exterior. Gillett Mary 281123 p5 Westside Index, Fatal Smash Near Vernalis; The high-crowned, narrow, San Joaquin county highway north of Vernalis claimed its toll of death Friday evening when Mrs. Mary Gillett was fatally injured in an accident caused by losing control of the car. Frank E. Gillett, her son, and driver of the car was seriously injured, but is recovering. The mishap occurred in the heavy traffic following the Tracy Patterson football game and according to Gillett, followed the crowding of his car off the highway by a truck. He lost control of the car in trying to get back on the road, and after narrowly missing two other cars, crashed into the ditch and against a telephone pole. Mrs. Gillett incurred two fractured legs and other severe injuries. She was given first aid treatment by Dr. E. G. Allen from Patterson and was then taken to a Modesto hospital, but her condition rapidly grew worse and she was removed to San Francisco, where she died Saturday night. Frank Gillett was taken to Tracy, where fifteen stitches were taken in his scalp, he was later removed to Modesto. The Gillettes had recently returned from Yosemite valley where her son has been employed, but were camping on Laird Slough at the time. The accident emphasizes the ever present menace of the narrow section of highway in San Joaquin county when any traffic at all must be passed. Rouse John 280120 p1 Body Stays in Morgue 3 Weeks; John Rouse, former Patterson boy, Unidentified following Auto Crash John Rouse, brother of James Rouse of Patterson and son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Rouse of Modesto, former Pattersonites, died from injuries received in an auto crash in San Francisco on December 22 but his body remained in the morgue for three weeks before it was finally identified by his parents last Saturday. The deceased, who was 33 years of age, was also a former Patterson boy and was very well known here. The strange case had its origin in a collision between an auto and a street car in San Francisco on December 21, but a series of events cut off all possibility of identification at the time. Rouse was rooming in Oakland and had gone to San Francisco that evening to attend a party, traveling with a friend. Following the affair they were en route to the ferry when a stranger gave them a lift in his automobile and it was while they were traveling in this that the fatal crash occurred. The friend was killed outright and Rouse sustained a fractured skull, never recovering consciousness and passing away the next day. There were no papers on him by which identification might be made, the friend had been killed instantly, and the stranger who had given them the fatal lift knew nothing of them, although he was held in custody for several days. The people with whom he had been rooming in Oakland also felt no apprehension about his absences, presuming he had plans elsewhere, until non-delivery of his mail finally led to notification of his parents at Modesto, leading to a search which ended in the San Francisco morgue Saturday. The deceased was a world war veteran and a military funeral was held at the Presidio Monday afternoon. James Rouse of Patterson is the only surviving son, a third son, Charles having been killed while serving as a patrolman at Fresno about ten years ago. Rowley incurred a fractured skull in the smash- up and never regained consciousness, passing away at a Modesto hospital Tuesday. Two other victims were taken to the hospital - Thomas Hanna, who sustained a fractured shoulder blade and three broken ribs, and J. Ruth, who also has a fractured shoulder blade. Both have sufficiently recovered to leave the hospital, however. The other two men sustained bruises and cuts but were not seriously hurt.
