The year s total will far surpass any previous record. Crows Landing Man Crushed Under Machine; Crows Landing, Nov. 27-- (Special) Thrown out of his car after he had lost control, John W. Chandler of Crows Landing, employed by the Jackson-Perkins rose gardens, met instant d e a t h shortly after five o'clock Saturday afternoon a mile south of here. Tracks left by the car showed that he had gone off the pavement into the ditch along the railroad, plowed along for 225 feet and then overturned trying to regain the pavement. Officers who investigated the accident believe that Chandler was thrown out of the machine through the right hand door when the vehicle struck the shoulder of the highway and then turned over to strike him with crushing force as he lay on the concrete. He was driving toward Crows Landing at the time and was near the bridge over Orestimba Creek when he lost control of the car, which officers believe must have been moving at a rapid rate, judging from the distance the vehicle churned through the soft mud before heading back to the highway. Only that morning his wife, Pearl, had departed for a visit in the Mid-West. A telegram informing her of the tragedy reached her at Salt Lake City and she immediately began her return journey. Funeral arrangements by Davis Chapel are pending her arrival. A brother, Truman Chandler, came here at once from Richmond when he learned of the accident. As near as can be determined by authorities who investigated the tragic accident, the tractor was moving along the edge of the road way when the double front wheel hit a chuck hole and swerved from its course. The impact evidently threw Cotta from the seat to the slight embankment, where he was pinned under the right wheel for an instant before the heavy machine rolled backward. Crow John B 460215 p2 John B Crow; Pioneer Resident Of West Side Succumbs; John B. Crow Lived Eighty Years At Crows Landing Crows Landing. Feb. 14 -- John B. Crow, one of the very few true pioneer residents of the West Side, passed away in a San Francisco hospital on Monday morning, three days after he had been moved there from his local home for treatment. Taken suddenly ill, he was rushed to the hospital, but the mesenteric thrombosis which had developed could not be alleviated by the specialist in charge. Services Yesterday; Funeral services were held in the Davis Chapel at Newman on Wednesday afternoon at 1:30, with Rev. H. A. Rodgers, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, conducting the rites. Cremation followed at Evergreen Memorial Park at Merced. Eighty Years; Crow had been a West Side resident almost continuously for exactly eighty years, -- the only breaks being the time he spent at San Jose attending school after receiving his grammar education in the building which once stood near the site of the family home; and another period spent in Berkeley when his sons were attending the University of California. In Covered Wagon; He came to California in 1865 in a covered wagon when but three years old, making the trip from his birthplace in Pike County, Missouri. The journey westward was made when his father traveled to this state for the third time, having been so favorably impressed with the section bordering Orestimba Creek that he had secured some 3000 acres of the most fertile land in the valley -- parts of which he later sold to the brothers who came from the mid-West to join him. Crow was always engaged in farming, transforming the early day pasture and grain land into alfalfa acreage when irrigation became available. He was active in community affairs until his retirement, serving in many capacities. His wife passed away in June, surviving are three sons; John Bradford, Jr., of San Marino, Sheldon of Newman, and Mervyn of Crows Landing, who had assumed active management of the extensive property interests here. Also surviving are two sisters and a brother. They are Mrs. Myra Marshall of San Francisco, Mrs. Evelyn Simmons of Berkeley and Glenburn Crow of Crows Landing. There are seven grandchildren and one great grandson. Crow Rose (Mullally) 460823 p1 Mystery Death of Onetime Girl Rodeo Star; Rose Mullally Crow Found Dead in Modesto Home; Death under dubious conditions wrote finis Sunday afternoon to the adventurous career of Mrs. Rose Mullally Crow, famed a generation ago for her ability to ride it out with the best of them, man or woman, on range or rodeo. Found dead on her bed by two laborers at her Modesto ranch, her body was badly bruised, and Coroner Jack Ransom s investigation revealed that a protracted drinking bout had been under way. While inclined to attribute her death to acute alcoholism, he had an autopsy performed. Results of this made such a theory a probability but not a certainty and a coroner s inquest was under way when this was written yesterday to investigate all phases of the matter. Charges that Leonard Brenegar, a former employer who had been discharged, had beaten her were made by John Spillane, who succeeded Brenegar on the job. The two were the ones who found the remains. Brenegar denied, hitting her, but was being held for questioning. Mrs. Crow was about 46 years old and was born in the Del Puerto Creek district in the Coast Range. She is survived by two sons, Norman and Robert Crow of Alhambra, and her former husband, Leland Crow,. who came to Modesto as soon as he was notified of her death. In San Francisco; Her sisters and brothers are Stella Ne1son, Aliva and Michael Mullally, and Leslie Connors, all of San Francisco. Funeral services are to beheld in that city. The episode brought a drab ending to a career that hit the headlines a generation ago when the deceased was one of the top girl riders of the country. As Rose Mullally, she competed for many years in the biggest rodeos in the West. Skilled and fearless, she turned in many fine performance and had the crowds roaring time after time. Peak of Career; She was at the peak of her performances in the early twenties and regularly carried away a major share of the money at such events as the Salinas, Livermore, Stockton and Sacramento meets. In those days girls flat races were a standard event at the big shows, together with a girls relay race in which each entrant handled a series of mounts. In 1923, Miss Mullally figured in a spectacular crash at the San Jose meet where her horse became unmanageable after she had won and crashed through the board fence. She was knocked unconscious for two hours and the stands thought she had been killed. Undaunted; Undaunted, she was back in competition at the Stockton Fair two weeks later, only to figure in another spectacular crash as her horse and one ridden by Bertha Stadtler, another famous rider, fouled up right in front of the grand stand and all went down in the pileup. Again she was knocked unconscious, but suffered no lasting injury. A couple of years later, an item relates that she attracted the attention of M.G.M. movie scouts after a series of spectacular wins at Livermore and was offered a job doubling for Lillian Gish in a feature movie, but other contracts prevented her accepting. She was with the Hoot Gibson show for a time, and in 1927 went to Pendleton but could not obtain suitable mounts and failed to ride. Later she joined a barnstorming tour through Idaho during which she consistently defeated the girl who had won the title of world champion that year. One of her last appearances was an exhibition performance at the West Stanislaus Irrigation Jubilee in 1930 when she was still able to thrill the throngs with her riding. Cruneleton Charles 461018 p1 Husband of Former Local Girl Killed; Local friends received word Sunday of the death of Charles Cruneleton, husband of the former Lee Sardo, in an auto accident in Southern California. Dobrzensky, West Side Pioneer, Dies; Newman, Dec, 5, Special– Leopold Dobrzenskv, Newman resident for more than a half century and owner of the Newman Water Works Company, died suddenly in San Francisco on Tuesday evening presumably of a heart attack. Word reached here late that night and his only son, Willard, left at once for the bay city. According to the brief message, Dobrzenskv had spent the early evening with his wife, who has been receiving treatment in a San Francisco hospital for the past several weeks. Afterwards, he and his nephew, Julian Ruwich, went to a theatre. There he suffered the fatal attack. Dobrzenskv was 81 years old on April 13th. A native of Germany, he came to San Francisco with his parents when a youth. From there he moved to Newman on March 25. 1891. Douty Frank E 461213 p1 Frank Douty Stricken Suddenly; Civic Leader Victim of Heart Attack Monday; Frank E. Douty, business and civic leader, passed away Monday afternoon, victim of a heart attack. He was found at 1:45 p.m. in the alley off Salado Avenue opposite Sacred Heart Church. by Manuel Nunes, church caretaker. He had dropped while pursuing a chicken that had gotten away from the Douty yard nearby. The news of his sudden passing was almost unbelievable, he had been actively engaged at the Commercial Bank all morning working with bank examiners on a routine visit to that institution. In fact, their arrival had changed plans for an Alameda trip that day with President Henry Johnson of the Chamber of Commerce to work on the new emergency housing project. And that just about typifies his career --a man who was always busy but who always had time to give doubly to civic and charitable movements. As chairman of the Patterson Red Cross Branch for many years, that activity was probably closest to his heart. But he was equally busy in Chamber of Commerce work and in many other ramifications of good citizenship. A West Sider since 1915, he spent the first ten years at Newman, engaged in the garage business. While there he was a member of the city council and was active in Chamber of Commerce work. Coming to Patterson in 1925, he acquired a substantial interest in the Commercial Bank, which he served as cashier and manager until he was ordered to take it easy last May. But life long habits could not be dropped that readily and he continued to assist in his capacity as vice-president and director, and also carried on many civic activities. The extent of these can be judged by a listing of his affiliations. He has been a director of the Patterson Chamber of Commerce virtually all the time for the past twenty years, with the exception of intervals when he was not eligible for reelection through bylaw provisions. And during these years he was elected president of the body three times. He had also been president of the West Side United Chamber of Commerce for many years. Douty was a director and one of the founders of the Patterson War Chest. He was a charter member of the Patterson Rotary Club; a trustee of the Federated Church; a past master of the Edgerton, Minnesota, and Patterson Masonic lodges; a Knight Templar and a member of Aahmes Temple of the Shrine and a member of the Eastern Star order. The deceased was 75 years of age and a native of Wisconsin, but had spent many years in Minnesota before coming to California. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Katherine Douty, and one sister, Mrs. Cora Lorenz of Woodstock, Minnesota. Local business houses closed out of respect to his memory during the funeral service hour Wednesday afternoon. Rites were held at the Evans Funeral Chapel with two pastors, Robert C. Pooley and John T. Bickford, participating. Interment in Del Puerto Cemetery followed, with the Masonic Lodge in charge of the graveside ceremony. The V-8 engine was split in two and car fragments were picked up nearly 200 yards distant. Fantazia had left Gustine about 3 a. m., having had no sleep that night. The crash presumably occurred about 3:45 hut it was an hour later before a passing truck driver stopped and investigated. He came into Patterson and summoned Highway Patrolman E. L. McCabe, who obtained an ambulance from the Crows Landing Air Station to rush the injured youth there. Badly crushed, he survived but a few hours after arrival. This report from a San Francisco pathologist has speeded an investigation into every detail surrounding the mystery death of Tony Machado, local dairy worker. Badly charred, Machado s body was found in the hot ashes of what had been a combination bunk house, garage and wood shed before flames completely destroyed the structure at about 1:30 a. m. Tuesday. The building was on one of the John Freitas ranches northeast of Newman. Within a few moments after the Newman fire truck reached the blaze officers state that they sensed "peculiar circumstances" and checked every possible detail even before Machado s body was observed. Face Downward; Machado s body was found 1ying face downward. His head was in the general direction of his bed in the bunk house, his feet about three feet from what had been the door sill, according to Aubrey M. Davis of the Davis Funeral Chapel who, with William Caton, was summoned when the body was discovered. Nearby, Davis said, was a shot gun. Its badly burned stock was near the dead man's head, with the barrel slanting a little to the 1eft. Deputy Sheriff Jack Hammett, chief criminal investigation deputy in the sheriff s office, reports that there was a large crack in Machado's skull but says that it would not be determined at the moment whether it was caused by a blow or by the fire s terrific heat. Fire Chief H. C. Meier of Newman and County Fire Warden 0. S. Ball were both at the fire but neither was able to immediately determine its origin. Noted Blaze; Henry Freitas, employer of Machado on the dairy ranch, is said to have told officers that he noted the blaze from the window of the house which he and his wife, Rose, occupy. The latter ran to a neighbor s home to give the alarm but in the meantime the flames were seen by another neighbor, who phoned in the alarm.. At about 10 o'clock Monday evening, according to Officer Harold Wilson, he was informed of an auto accident on Highway 33 two miles north of Newman and asked to drive to the scene. There, the officer says, he was told that a sedan, then standing on the edge of the pavement, had run into a ditch and overturned and that Machado, whom Wilson saw among the crowd that gathered, had been the driver. The sedan is one used on the Freitas ranch and Wilson states that Henry Freitas, also at the scene of the accident, suggested that an arrest be made, saying the car had been taken without Freitas' permission. Wilson informed him that such action would be taken provided Freitas sign a complaint. This Freitas declined to do, being reported as saying that Machado had sufficient wages coming to cover the cost of repairing the machine. Truck Assisted; A truck, thought to have contained three men, is believed to have pulled the sedan out of the ditch and officers say they were told that the same truck towed the machine to the Freitas ranch. Officers are endeavoring to contact these men, seeking, they say, to check on "the time element," but without feeling that the trio are in any way involved, they make clear. Early Thirties; Machado was in his early thirties. During the past several years, he has been employed on different ranches in this section. Assault Charge; Last Thursday, John Freitas, Henry's brother, signed a complaint charging that Henry had assaulted him with a deadly weapon, alleging that a piece of pipe had been used. John had entered the Westside Hospital for the treatment of head injuries. Justice of the Peace S. C. Bell set bail in the amount of $2000, which was furnished by the mother of the two. However, late Tuesday afternoon, she asked that the bail be withdrawn. Magee Anna 460726 p1 Miss Anna Magee, Local Librarian, Passes Away; Miss Anna Magee passed away at an Oakdale hospital Monday, following an illness of many months duration. She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Hugh F. Magee. at Taunton and three sisters Mrs. John C. Cox of Westley, Miss Lena Magee of Victorville and Miss Marjorie Magee of Taunton, and one brother, William. of Massachusetts. No services were held here but the remains were held at a Modesto funeral chapel Tuesday while friends called. Shipment followed to Taunton for services and interment. The Patterson Library was closed Tuesday is tribute to the memory of the deceased. Patterson Loses a Friend; In the death of Miss Anna Magee, Patterson loses a leading citizen and a friend of all. Her name was not emblazoned in civic movements, nor did she appear at the head of school, club or social activities. In fact, it was difficult to obtain her consent to use her name at all, so retiring was her disposition. But her name was a synonym for unselfish service, quietly plugging away to help everyone that it was within her power to help . . . aiding many generations of school children to learn to love books and extract their treasure... helping club women prepare papers . . . giving all her meager energy to the folks she loved. All this in spite of physical handicaps which would have embittered many an ordinary soul and made them dependent on others. But not Anna Magee. She gloried in independence and in making her own way. And her cheer and helpful spirit were an inspiration to many who were far more fortunate than she. Her record of service is a monument more enduring than marble. Paradis of Modesto, for many years a department head at El Solyo Ranch, was fatally injured in a highway mishap Tuesday night. Ironically, the accident occurred just opposite the El Solyo packing shed. Losing control while traveling at a speed estimated to be between 75 and 80 miles an hour, Paradis' car weaved a wild trail before rolling over and over, throwing him out and probably crushing him in its path. Time of the mishap was set at 8:30 by an eye-witness, J. S. Wasilchen of San Francisco, who was returning northward after spending the day here unloading a shipment of gypsum for local farm lands. According to his story to Highway Patrolman E. L. McCabe, Paradis overtook him from the south and passed him like a bullet, with a speed estimated at between 75 and 80 miles per hour. So fast was he going that the swerve necessary to pass caused him to lose control and his car failed to straighten out as he tried to turn back to the right after passing. It swayed, first to the right and then to the left, went into the ditch on the west side and traveled about 100 feet, then back onto the highway, where it whipped sideways across the pavement and started to roll over and over. Paradis was thrown out about 100 feet after it overturned, but the car went on about 50 feet further before halting. The badly crushed victim was laying across the white line when Wasilchen reached him. He was still breathing but passed away in a few moments. McCabe reported a delay of over two hours in getting Coroner J. K. Ransome to come to the scene from Modesto, exhausting his supply of flares controlling traffic in the meantime, as the body could not be moved. Fortunately the heavy fogs that set in later were absent. In the meantime, a tow car had come from Modesto and removed the wreckage. Paradis was employed at El Solyo Ranch for about twelve years, but has been residing in Modesto since leaving the ranch, serving as a representative of the Santa Cruz Fruit Packing Co. of Oakland. He was en route home from Westley when the accident occurred. A native of Hoquiam, Washington, Paradis was 36 years of age. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Bernardine Paradis. Funeral services will be held at the Shannon Chapel, Modesto, at 11 a.m. today. Barbara, only eleven months old, and her mother, Mrs. James Roland occupied an apartment on the second floor of the Crows Landing Hotel. She was left playing on her bed near the open window while the mother was in the kitchen. Somehow, she opened the screen. The mother found the child unconscious on the ground between the hotel building and Hudson s barber shop. The tiny head had struck a pipe that had been tossed there. Barbara was taken to Newman physicians whose examination disclosed critical injuries. As the West Side Hospital was filled with patients, the youngster was taken to a Modesto hospital, where she passed away Friday evening. The Red Cross and Navy Mother s Club both sent telegrams to the child s father, in training at Guam for the coming atomic bomb test, informing him of the tragedy. He had been at the Crows Landing Naval Auxiliary Air Station until six weeks ago and his family had planned on joining him as soon as permissible. Barbara was born in North Carolina and came here with her parents last November. Rose Manuel F Fra 461018 p1 Father Rose Passes Away Suddenly; End Comes Almost Without Warning Sunday Night; Father Manuel F. Rose, pastor of Sacred heart Parish, passed away very suddenly Sunday night, about 10:45, victim of a heart attack. The end came almost without warning, as he had conducted his customary three masses at the Patterson and Crows Landing churches during the day, and although he complained a little of tiredness in the afternoon, he was not indisposed. About nine p.m., however, he became ill and his housekeeper, Mrs. Roberta Reynolds, summoned Dr. V. G. Goutiere. Later, a more severe attack occurred and he passed away before the doctor could reach him. His death was part of a tragic parallel involving another Sacred Heart Parish at Turlock. Father Daniel O'Riordan, pastor of that parish had passed away the same morning at an Oakland hospital following a heart attack at the St. Mary's football game. Both were about also 48 years of age. Funeral mass for the deceased pastors was said by Archbishop John J. Mitty at St. Mary s Cathedral San Francisco, Wednesday morning. Julio Martins of Hayward, former pastor of the local church, assisted by ten pastors from Central California parishes. Local business houses were closed during the hour of the services. The deceased was a native of San Leandro. Ordained in 1928 at St. Patrick's Seminary, Menlo Park, he has served many California parishes, being at Mission San Jose prior to coming to Patterson in July, 1942. He is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. August Rose; a sister, Marie, and two brothers, Frank and Clarence, all residents of San Jose. Father Rose was a tireless worker who accomplished much for his parish, his most recent achievement being the move which resulted in the formation of the Young Men's Institute with a record breaking charter list. Does Much For Parish; The project closest to his heart, however, was the erection of a new church to house the rapidly growing congregation, and he had progressed with this to the point of being ready for construction when scarcity of materials prevented realization of his dreams before his death.
