Agadoni Edna 520619 p1 Former Resident Passes Away; Mrs. Edna Agadoni, former resident of Patterson, passed away in San Jose last week Wednesday. She is survived by a husband, Jim Agadoni, a sister in Lafayette, and a brother, Dave, in San Diego. Those from Patterson who attended funeral services Friday in Sunnyvale were Mrs. Hilma Agadoni and her daughter, Mrs. Winifred Burke, and Alice Gustafson. Interment was at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno. Anderson Maria 520501 p1 Maria Anderson Dies In Hospital; Miss Maria Anderson, 47, passed away early Tuesday morning at Del Puerto Hospital after an extended illness here. A native of North Dakota, Miss Anderson has lived in Patterson for three months with her brother Rev. Magnus Anderson. She is survived by four brothers, Mortiz Anderson of Chicago, Illinois; Chester and Earland Anderson of Grand Forks, North Dakota and the Reverend of Patterson. Services will be held today at 1:30 in the Evans Chapel with Rev. Anderson officiating. Internment will be at Del Puerto Cemetery. Arsuaga Pete 520124 p1 Pete Arsuaga, 52 Is Found Dead; Pete Arsuaga, 52, was found dead in his bed in a sheep camp wagon about 11 a. m. Monday on t h e Yrigoyen Sheep Ranch, southwest of Patterson. Funeral services will be held at Sacred Heart Church tomorrow. He will be interred at St. Mary s Cemetery. Arsuaga, who had been head sheepherder at the ranch for 21 years, apparent1y died of natural causes. His body was found and reported by ranch manager Albert E. Philips. He last had been seen Saturday afternoon. Deputy sheriff-coroner J. K. Ransom investigated the death. A native of Spain, Arsuaga is survived by a sister, Mrs. Maria de Cortez, of Tijuana, Mexico. Atkins George 520410 p1 George Atkins Dies In Oakland; Graveside services were held for George Atkins of Patterson at the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Francisco yesterday at 2:45 P. M. A local resident for many years, Atkins passed away in the Oak Knoll Hospital in Oakland following poor health and three weeks of illness there. Friends reported that he was close to 80 years old and a veteran of the Spanish-American War. Bell William H 520327 p1 William Bell Passes Away; William H. Bell, 69, passed away Wednesday morning at Del Puerto Hospital after an illness which had hospitalized him for the past five and a half months. Prior to that time he lived with his nephew, Dan Kelsay. He is survived by Kelsay and other nieces and nephews. Rev. Kenneth D. Miller will officiate at services Friday morning at Evans Chapel. The time has tentatively been set at 10 o clock. The remains will be shipped to Bend, Oregon, for graveside services and interment. Bowman Caroline 520717 p1 Former Resident Passes Away; Mrs. Caroline Bowman, 76, passed away in a Pasadena hospital Friday, July 11, after a lengthy illness. She is survived by two sons, Lloyd and Victor of Patterson; two grandsons, Lowell and Stanley of Patterson; one sister, Mrs. Ida Hanson of Norfolk, Conn; and a cousin, Rev. H. W. Willing of Pasadena. Mrs. Bowman, a native of Sweden, lived in Patterson from 1920 to 1931, when she moved to Twain Harte. In 1945 she moved to Pasadena. Graveside services were held in Del Puerto Cemetery at 10:30 a. m. Tuesday with Rev. C. A. Nylund officiating. Funeral services were held in Pasadena at 11 a. m. Monday. Attending services from Patterson were Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Bowman and sons Lowell and Stanley, and Victor Bowman. Mrs. Bowman came to the United States in 1891 at the age of 15. Later she married Eugene Olaf Bowman and they settled in Galva, Illinois. The family moved here in 1920 Brewer Guy H 520306 p1 Guy Hiram Brewer, Early Resident, Passes On; Guy Hiram Brewer. 76, passed on in the Sonora Hospital Monday. He was a long time resident of Patterson and vicinity, coming to Newman in 1908 and to Patterson in 1914. He lived in Long Barn during the last few years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 40 years, a member of Patterson Lodge 488 F&AM, and a Mason at Hills Ferry Lodge No. 236 in Newman when Roy Smith was master there. He was a carpenter by trade. Funeral services were held yesterday at 2 p. m. at Evans Funeral Chapel. Mrs. Harry Mortenson, Christian Science reader from Gustine, was in charge of services. Committal was handled by the Patterson Masonic Lodge. Following services Brewer was taken to Merced for cremation. Coito Antone G 520103 p1 Antone Coito Dies At Age of 71; Antone G. Coito, 71, of Patterson passed away at Del Puerto Hospital Thursday night after a long illness. Coito was a native of the Azores Island and came to Patterson in 1920. At one time he owned a ranch on Walnut Ave. and was also owner of the Emerold Hotel. He retired from business about 5 years ago. He was a member of UPEC and IDES. Rosary services were held at the Evans Funeral Chapel, Friday evening. Funeral services were held at the Sacred Heart Church at 10 A. M. Saturday, with the Rev. John Clogher officiating. Interment was in St. Mary s cemetery. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Josephine Coito of Patterson, one son, Henry Coito of Patterson, four daughters, Mrs. Hazel King, Mrs. Edith Crooks, Mrs. Bernice Edwards, all of Patterson and Mrs. Mae Foley of Albany City. Also surviving are ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild, three sisters in the Azore Islands, one sister in Brazil and a nephew, Frank Coito of Dos Palos. Diniz Manuel M 520911 p1 Services Held For Mrs. Alves' Father; Funeral services were held Monday morning in Newman for Manuel Machado Diniz, 55, father of Mrs. Anthony Alves of Eucalyptus Ave., Patterson. He died Friday of a heart attack while at work in a Newman creamery. Interment was at Hills Ferry Cemetery. Diniz was born in Terceira, Azores Islands, and he had lived in Newman 37 years, working first as a dairyman and then at the creamery. He was a member of UPEC No. 68 and the FDES Society of Newman. He leaves his widow, Mary A. Diniz of Newman; children Mary A. Diniz and Manuel A. Diniz of Newman and Mrs. Alves of Patterson; his mother, Josefa da Costa Diniz of the Azores; brothers and sisters, Mrs. George S. Silva and Lydia Teixeira of Newman; Mrs. M. C. The child died last week in Mineral Wells after an illness of several days. He is survived by his parents: his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Carson of Patterson; two uncles and aunts, Mr. and Mrs. Fain Renfro and Mrs. Paul Copeman of Patterson; and two uncles currently serving in the armed forces. George H and Eugene E Carson of Patterson. Flanagan Sam A 520130 p1 Sam Flanagan Dies in Grayson Home; Sam Alexander Flanagan, 61, passed away at his home in Grayson, Sunday, January 27. Funeral services were held at the Evans Chapel, Wednesday at 2 p. m. Elder D. A. Lane of Modesto presided. He was interred at the Del Puerto Cemetery. A native of Texas, Flanagan is survived by his wife Lillian B. Flanagam, his son James Flanagan of Grayson and his three brothers: Willie Flanagan of Ceres, Calif., James Flanagan of Modesto, and Mike Flanagan of Texas. Gainza Jessie Mrs 520904 p2 One Dies, Three Injured in Car-Truck Collision; One woman died and three persons are in Del Puerto Hospital following the collision of a car and truck one mile north and a mile east of Westley at River and Main Canal Roads Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Jessie Gainza, 51, Stockton succumbed of multiple injuries at Del Puerto Hospital the following morning. Jesusa Tapia, 24, Stockton, is showing steady improvement after being in critical condition with a broken back and a broken leg. Jeannette Sorhenda, 24, Stockton hotel waitress, is also showing improvement. She suffered a fractured pelvis. Pierre Oxoteguy, 40, driver of the car in which the three women were passengers, has a broken wrist and several other minor injuries. Clyde Blunt, 29, Modesto, driver of the loaded gravel dump truck, was thrown clear when the vehicle careened 75 feet through an abutment and off River Road into the canal. He was not injured. The truck was traveling north on River Road and had started to make a left turn on the other road. The passenger car was going east on Main Canal Road. No one seems to know what happened at the time, but there was a "terrific impact," according to Blunt. The car went about 60 feet after the collision and remained upright although in a demolished condition. Chet's ambulance made two trips between the hospital and the accident scene. Ghisletta Franklin C 520605 p1 Franklin Ghisletta Dies in Accident; Franklin Charles Ghisletta, 32, who lived in Patterson all his life, was killed at 9 a. m. Memorial Day when his truck hit a bridge abutment two miles west of Turlock. The truck turned over pinning Ghisletta under it. Highway patrol officers said the truck ran off the road, hit the abutment and the boom, sticking out in front of the truck, dug into the pavement, flipping the truck over. He was employed by H. Sykes. Ghisletta was born and raised here and was a veteran of World War II. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary A. Ghisletta; five brothers, Anthony Ghisletta, Leo Ghisletta, Miles Ghisletta, and Stanley Ghisletta. all of Patterson, and Ronald Ghisletta, now serving with the U. S. Army in Korea; and four sisters, Mrs. Carline Mahaffey, Mrs. Margaret Farrel and Mrs. Lorenne Alves all of Patterson, and Mrs. Annalea Dompe of Crows Landing. Mass was held at the Sacred Heart Church Tuesday morning at 10 a. m. Father John Dermody officiated. Rosary was held Monday at 8 p.m., at Evans Chapel. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Ghisletta, who graduated from Patterson High School in 1939, was senior class president. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps four years as flight engineer. Mrs. Gregory, a native of Oklahoma, lived in San Leandro but resided in Patterson off and on for a number of years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Federated Church. She is survived by two children, Clifford H. Gregory and Dolores C. De Bolt, both of San Leandro; seven grandchildren, three brothers, William Long of Patterson, Sam Long of San Jacinto and Joe. Long of Monte Vista, Colorado; two sisters, Inez Taylor of San Jacinto and Viola Gardner of Kansas City, Missouri. Harrison Arthur D 520619 p1 Services Held For A. D. Harrison; Funeral services for Arthur D. Harrison, 82, were held in Fresno Tuesday. He passed away Sunday in Modesto after a lengthy illness. Ha is survived by two sons, Lawrence of Patterson and Arthur of Fort Worth, Texas, and two grandchildren, Laurie and Bill of Patterson. The late Mr. Harrison was born in Norwich, England. and came to this country in 1884. After a short stay in New York, he moved to Fresno where he lived for 35 years. Mrs. Harrison died in 1947, and he came to Patterson to live with Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Harrison. Harrison Percy 520925 p1 Percy Harrison Early Resident Passes Away In S.F.; Percy Harrison. 72, long time resident and Southern Pacific railroad agent in Patterson, passed away in a San Francisco hospital last Wednesday evening following an extended illness. He is survived by his widow, Grace, Patterson; a son, Alfred Harrison, Patterson, and a sister, Mrs. Lillie Virgo, Stevenson. Harrison was born in England and came to the United States in 1897. He came to Patterson in 1915 as S. P. railroad agent, then moved to Oakland in 1933 where he served in a similar capacity until his retirement in 1945. In 1945 he moved to Gustine where he lived until May of last year when the Harrisons returned to Patterson, taking residence on North Fourth St. While in Patterson, Harrison helped organize the Free and Accepted Masons, F & AM, in 1920 and the Order of Easter Star, OES, a few years later. He served as first Master of the local F&AM and held office for two term, 1920 and 1921. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of England, the order of railroad telegraphers: the Royal Arch Masons and Knights Templar in Modesto: the Aahmes Shrine Temple of Oakland; and the Masonic lodge of Benicia. He served as Master of the Los Banos Lodge. F & AM, in 1913 and was a Past Master of the Orestimba Chapter, OES, Newman. and Past Patron of the Patterson chapter OES. Funeral services were held at Evans Funeral Chapel at 10 a. m. Saturday. Reverend Kenneth D. Miller, pastor of the Federated Church, officiated. Interment in Hills Ferry Cemetery. Holmes Thomas J 521120 p1 Mrs. Wagner's Dad Passes at 77; Thomas J. Holmes, 77, father of Mrs. Theodore Wagner of Patterson, died October 12 in Inglewood, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Wagner went to Long Beach for the services Friday. Interment was at Sunnyside Memorial Park in Long Beach. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Camelia A. Holmes of Long Beach; four daughters, Mrs. Wagner of Patterson, Mrs. Ben Samuels, Mrs. Dean Rimel and Mabel Holmes Grigsby, all of Long Beach; a sister, Mrs.. Lelia Fransworth of Wilmington; three grandchildren, Theodore Wagner Jr., of Patterson, Rita and Gail Rimel of Long Beach. Homes was born in Burnet, Texas. Horr John H 521016 p1 John Henry Horr Passes Away; John Henry "Jack" Horr passed away at the age of 68 at Yountville Veterans Home in California Sunday. He was a native of California and the West Side, being born in Del Puerto Canyon on the old Horr cattle Ranch in 1887. Interment will be at golden Gate National cemetery tomorrow at 10 a.m. Horr lived here most of his life until 15 years ago. He worked on cattle ranches and was a veteran of World War I. He is survived by a brother, William Franklin Horr of Los Angeles, and two sisters, Mrs. Helen Bernal of Saratoga and Mrs. Marguerite Sykes of Patterson. Hotchkiss David W 521023 p1 Man Dies Two Days After Accident on Canyon Road; David W. Hotchkiss, 46, of San Jose died at Del Puerto Hospital Saturday afternoon as the result of an auto accident Thursday morning at 10 o'clock eight tenths of a mile west of the Stanislaus County line on the Del Puerto Canyon road to San Jose. He died of internal hemorrhages caused by ruptured arteries near the lungs. Hotchkiss, who had been mining quick silver in Adobe Valley near the Navy bombing base 25 miles west of here, had apparently started driving to San Jose when his pickup turned over and came to rest on its wheels. He drove about five miles back to the Navy base where his pickup developed mechanical trouble. Sailors brought him to his trailer house, and they suggested he see a doctor. He refused, and they dropped in on him Friday morning and again made the suggestion. He was found in a coma Saturday morning by his partner, J. C. Del Ponte of San Jose. He was brought to the hospital and died one hour later. Hotchkiss is survived by two brothers in San Jose, a brother in Pasadena and two sisters. His body was shipped to San Jose Tuesday for burial. Housewright Nellie A 520320 p1 Funeral Services Held Tuesday; Funeral services were held for Mrs. Nellie Ann Housewright, 67, at the Evans Funeral Chapel, Tuesday at 3 p. m. Rev. C. H. Terwilliger officiated. Interment was in the Del Puerto Cemetery. Mrs. Housewright died in her Westley home on March 14. She had lived there for 12 years. She is survived by seven daughters, Mrs. Beatrice Shores of Grayson, Mrs. Kathearn Stroud and Mrs. Mildred Sperry of Patterson, Mrs. Odel Whatley of Napa, Mrs. Beulah Wells of Stockton, Mrs. Lorene Hendrickson of Sebastopol and Mrs. Mattie Teague of Fort Worth, Texas; three sons, E. W. Housewright of Patterson, P. R. Housewright of Plano, Tex., and Nathan O Neal of Grayson, and two brothers, H. M. Hoplin of McKinney, Texas, and Harris Joplin of Dallas, Texas. Hull Johnnie P 520925 p1 Johnnie Hull Dies of Heart Attack; Johnnie P. Hull, 74, a native of Arkansas, died of a heart attack last Wednesday in Santa Cruz where he was visiting his sister, Mrs. Annie Smith. He is survived by three sons, Rev. Nicolas Hull of San Diego, Pressley Hull of Los Angeles, and Dolph Hull of Sapulpa, Okla., and one daughter, Mrs. Goldie Yarger of Sapulpa. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Fannie Ross of Patterson, with whom he had been residing, Mrs. Annie Smith of Santa Cruz, and Mrs. Addie Bright of Cleveland, Oklahoma. Hull, a retired farmer, came here in 1937. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Evans Funeral Chapel. Rev. B. U. Baldwin of the Church officiated. Interment was in Del Puerto Cemetery. Serving as pall bearers were Lester Cochran, Johnny Azevedo, Fredo Frinkman, George Gilbert, Cleo Parker and Don Nuner. Jessen Carrie 520703 p1 Mrs. Carrie Jessen Buried at Fresno; Mrs. Carrie Jessen, 86, was laid to rest in the family plot at Mt. View Cemetery, Fresno, Tuesday afternoon. The long time resident of the Patterson Colony died June 28 in Del Puerto Hospital after a lengthy illness. The Rev. Magnus Anderson of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church conducted services at Evans Funeral Chapel at 10 a. m. Tuesday. She had been in the hospital since December 6, 1951. Mrs. Jessen was the widow of J. L. Jessen, who died in 1949. They came to Patterson in 1912 from Fresno and lived on Bartch Avenue. The Jessen's were successful farmers south of town. They had 74 acres of fruit, which in recent years had been managed by Walter Lee. J. L. Jessen was a director of the Commercial Bank for a number of years, and at the time of his death was treasurer. Mrs. Jessen was a native of Denmark. She was the last member of either side of the family. In February of this year she was preceded in death by her brother Niels Jensen. Walter Lee and the Jacobsen brothers, Vic Ben and William, drove to Fresno and attended graveside services. Johnson CJ Mrs 520710 p1 Mother of Local Man Passes Away; Word was received here yesterday by Lyle Johnson of the sudden death of his mother, Mrs. C. J. Johnson, 67, of Salinas. Her death yesterday morning came as a surprise although she had been ailing for a number of years: Funeral services are pending, but interment will be in the family plot in Salinas. She was preceded in death by her husband. The elder Johnson's had lived here for a few years in the mid 20's, coming to Patterson from Minnesota She is survived by two sons, Lyle of Patterson and Wesley of Salinas, one daughter, Mrs. Avis Silacci of Salinas, three grandchildren, Larry Johnson of Patterson, Stanton Johnson and Avis Marie Silacci of Salinas, and two brothers and two sisters, of which only Henry C. Hanson lives in Patterson. Johnson Minnie 521120 p1 Minnie Johnson Resident Here 41 Years, Passes Away; Minnie Johnson, 79, a native of Kristinneham, Sweden, passed away in Del Puerto Hospital Saturday after a short illness. She had been a resident of Patterson for 41 years and lived on Orange Ave. Services were held Monday at Evans Funeral Chapel, with Rev. C. A. Nylund officiating. Interment was in Del Puerto Cemetery. Mrs. Johnson came to the United States at the age of 20, and resided for a time in Fort Dodge, Iowa, then Rockford, Illinois, before coming to Chicago. She met Albin Johnson there and they were married July 3, 1903. The family moved to Patterson in July of 1911. Mr. Johnson passed away in January of 1950. Mrs. Johnson had been a member of the local Covenant Church since January, 1912. The Covenant Ladies' Aid Society was or organized in her home. She was its first secretary and served as chairman for nine years. She served as deaconess of the church for several years. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Linnea E. Hansen of Patterson and Mrs. Frances W. Balswick of Turlock; three sons, Walter C. Johnson, Paul W. Johnson and Stanley Johnson, all of Patterson; a sister, Mrs. Katherine Larson, of Pasadena, and eight grandchildren. Pall Bearers were Stanley and Paul Johnson, Fred Hansen, Clifford Peterson, Orvil Balswick and Merrill Johnson. Honorary pall bearers were C. P. Peterson, Gus Peterson, Erick Ohlson, Edwin Fredrickson, J. B. Anderson and Richard Kolander. Jones William R 520703 p1 Patterson Native Dies In Oakland; William Roy Jones, 74, brother of Mrs. Carra McAulay, passed away at his home in Oakland Sunday and was buried Tuesday afternoon in Oakland with the complete families in attendance. Jones, who was born near Patterson on the McAulay ranch, recently acquired by the U. S. Navy, was a frequent visitor here. The retired police officer of the city of Oakland was last here in May. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. McAulay, a niece, Mrs. Lucile Filippini, a grandniece, Mrs. Marnelle Cripe of Elk Grove, and two grand nephews, Elmer Filipini of Patterson and Alan Roy Hitchcock of San Jose. Juarez Oropezza F 521009 p1 Pedestrian Killed on Highway 33; A Patterson laborer was struck and killed by an auto while walking on Highway 33 near the old drive-in theater Sunday night about 8 p. m. He died instantly when struck by an auto driven by Leonard P. Luis, 31, Patterson. The pedestrian, Oropezza F. Juarez, 29, Arredondo's labor camp, was crossing the highway. The body was carried over 100 feet by the crash and the left front side of the car was smashed in. Juarez was killed instantly. Luis said he was traveling at 55 miles per hour and his vision was obscured by dust and smoke from a grass fire. He said he did not see the pedestrian until the auto struck him. The remains are at Evans Funeral Chapel pending instructions from the Mexican Consul. Juarez was a Mexican national here on contract. Kettler Walter S 520717 p1 Services Held For Walter Kettler; Funeral services were held Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Franklin and Downs Funeral Home in Modesto for Walter S. Kettler, 27, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kettler of Riverbank. He was killed when the crop dusting plane he was piloting crashed near Halletsville, Texas, July 10. The deceased was a graduate of the Patterson Elementary School. His parents formerly lived on Vineyard, moving from the Patterson Colony 11 years ago. He was a pilot in the Army Air Force in World War II. Following the war he was a pilot for United Air Lines and had been on leave of absence from that company while serving as a pilot for a crop dusting firm in Halletsville. He is survived by his parents and two brothers, Donald of Klammath Falls, Oregon, and Richard of the U. S. Merchant Marines, and two sisters, Lorraine Snyder of Torrance and Joyce Smith of San Francisco. Klammath Falls, Ore., and Richard Torrance, Calif. Graveside services were conducted by the Modesto Veterans Council at the Masonic Cemetery. Moe Vernon 520605 p1 Body Of Moe Found in Crashed Plane; The body of Captain Vernon Moe of Patterson was found Sunday in the wreckage of the twin engine C47 which crashed the day after Christmas on Mt. Lassen. Captain Moe and seven others died in the crash. Moe was the co-pilot. The C47 crashed in a snow storm en route from Spokane Wash. to Travis Air Force Base. Mrs. Dorothy Moe, his wife dreamed the plane crashed in the vicinity of the village of Day and organized a search party earlier in the year. The search was abandoned because of snow. Olson Martin 520103 p1 Former Resident Dies On Trip; Martin Olson, 66, San Francisco resident who formerly lived in Patterson, passed away Sunday, December 23rd. While in Patterson he was engineer for the Standard Oil Company, and was transferred to San Francisco several years ago. He has made a number of trips to foreign countries for the company and had just returned from a trip from India. The boat had been taken into Portland for repairs when he was taken ill. He was sent to a Portland hospital and seemed to be recovering at the time he passed away. When he lived in Patterson, he and his family made their home on North 3rd Street. His widow, Mrs. Marie Olson, lives at 1246 23rd Ave., San Francisco. Besides his widow, he leaves two daughters, Helena of Sacramento and Muriel of Las Vegas, and a son, Martin Olson Jr. of San Francisco. Pearce Henry C 520911 p10 From the West Side Index Firebaugh Youth Drowns in River; The San Joaquin River has claimed another victim. Henry C. Pearce, 17-year-old resident of Firebaugh, drowned Sunday afternoon of last week while swimming a sort distance south of the bridge. With his wife and uncle, Hubert E. Weeks, he had spent the afternoon at the river, swimming frequently in the stream. About five o'clock, the uncle told authorities, Pearce started to swim across the channel. When about two-thirds of the way, he threw up his arms and sank beneath the surface. The body was recovered Monday morning by county firemen and sheriff's officers, including Deputy M. F. Tanner of Crows Landing, after an all-night search. Funeral services were held last week in the Davis Chapel at Newman, with Rev. Wilburn Harris of Patterson conducting the rites. Interment was in Hills Ferry Cemetery. Pedro, prominent Westley and Tracy farmer, were held last Saturday morning at 9:30 at the Hotchkiss Mortuary at Tracy, followed by mass at St. Bernard s Catholic Church at 10 o clock. Interment was at Stockton. Rosary services for the deceased were held Friday at 8:30 p. m. in the mortuary. He died Wednesday, June 4, at the age of 63. Mr. Pedro was a native of the Isle of Flores in the Azores and came to the United States as a youth. He became a citizen in 1913 and selected John Joseph Pedro as his full name although born John J. Pedro DeCamara. He started farming near Gustine as a dairyman and from there purchased, developed and sold numerous parcels of farmlands throughout the West Side and Tracy areas. In 1940 Mr. Pedro and William Lewis of Tracy together purchased a large tract of land from the Burkhard Investment Company near Westley known as the Whitelake Ranch. He was a progressive farmer and with his two sons, Alfred and Walter, successfully farmed a large parcel of this land to alfalfa, beans, tomatoes and other crops. He was president of the Whitelake Mutual Water Company. He also held membership as a director of the Tracy branch of the former Bank of Italy, now the Bank of America, and was a member of Tracy Aerie 2136, F. O. E. Peterson Mathilda 520918 p1 42 Year Resident Passes Away; Mathilda Peterson, 80, a resident of Patterson since 1910, passed away at Del Puerto Hospital Sunday after a short illness. She was a native of Sweden and came to this country in 1905, settling in Chicago. Five years later she moved here, settling on a place on Las Palmas Ave. about ½ mile from town. She was a charter member of the Mission Covenant Church and with her late husband helped found the present church. The first meetings were help upstairs in a. barn at the Peterson place on Las Palmas. She was a member of the Ladies Aid and the Covenant Women's Auxiliary. He was born February 8, 1885 at Glasgow, Kentucky. He received his schooling in his native state and then became a rancher. On January 9, 1907 he was married to Cloteel M. Kidd, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William T. Kidd of Glasgow,;who later became residents of Patterson. The Redford family came to Patterson in 1929, and Mr. Redford began employment with the Patterson Water Company. He was with the company for a period of 13 years. Survivors are the widow, Cloteel M Redford of Patterson; one son, Edward W. Redford of Watsonville and six daughters, Clara Bowles and Mrs. Ina Turpen of Watsonville; Mrs. Anna Elholm of Empire; Mrs. Nell Tenbrink and Miss Evelyn Redford of Patterson and Mrs. Bernice Torrison of Westley. Sequeira, 57, Patterson passed away sometime during the evening of May 28. He was found by the Medieros brothers of Turlock when they stopped to visit him on Memorial day, May 30. Sequeira, a native of San Jeorge Island in the Azores, had just received his citizenship papers last week. Death was caused by a heart attack. Torvend, Early Settler, Passes Away; Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church for Mrs. Bertina Torvend, 89, who had come to Patterson with her family in 1911. The Rev. Magnus B. Anderson officiated, and interment was at Del Puerto Cemetery. Mrs. Torvend died last week Wednesday at Del Puerto Hospital following an extended illness. She had been bedridden for the past year after suffering a broken hip. She was cared for at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Julius Hatlen, until a month ago when her condition became worse. She was born in Kenyon, Minn., February 11, 1863. In 1911 the Torvend family came to Patterson and began ranching. They build their home on what is now Del Puerto Ave., where the Hatlen's live. Mr. Torvend passed away in 1917. Mrs. Torvend has made her home with the Hatlen's for the past 17 years, seven at Santa Barbara and 10 here. She was the first president of the Lutheran Ladies Aid here. Mrs. Torvend had 12 children, two died in infancy. She is survived by five children; Mrs. Julius Hatlen of Patterson, Ingolf Torvend of Modesto, Samuel and Silas Torvend of Silverton, Oregon, and Henry Torvend of Salem, Oregon. Mrs. Emma Harper of Santa Cruz; a brother, Edwin Tyler of Murphys and 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild. van Ross Rochester 520619 p1 1 Dead, 1 Injured, 1 Sought After Knife Fight; A Westley Farm labor camp resident is being sought for murder this week as the result of a drinking fight at the camp Sunday night He is Samuel Herman Samuels,53, recently of the Fresno area. Dead of knife wounds across his chest and back is Rochester van Ross, 36. In the county hospital from a knife wound in her chest is Mrs. Lottie Ruffins, 32. She was in critical condition at first but at last check has been reported as recovering. According to Sheriff Captain Jess Ross, it began shortly before 5 p. m. when Samuels was sitting in the home of Bob and Carrie Shaw, drinking with van Ross and Mrs. Ruff ins. At Samuel s complaint, Mrs. Ruffins passed Samuels a whiskey bottle. He drained it dry. In anger, Mrs. Ruffins shoved the bottle down his mouth. Samuels invited Mrs. Ruffians outside and she followed, armed with a butcher knife, with which she took several swings at him. Van Ross tried to make peace and made Mrs. Ruffins put the knife down. Then Samuels slapped Mrs Ruffins three times. Samuels then went back to the Shaws and asked them to return the pocket knife he had loaned them. Samuels returned and resumed the argument. Again, Van Ross sprung between them to make peace but was unable to prevent Samuels from inflicting an eight-inch cut across her chest. Van Ross tried pushing Samuels away but received a gash in his chest and back. "I ll get even with you!" Van Ross gasped, then fell dead. Samuels dived into Shaw's home for two minutes, then disappeared down the highway. Sheriff Dan Kelsay combed the area with 11 reserve deputies and four regulars. Samuels is described as 5 foot, 9 inches, 160 pounds, graying hair and colored. He was wearing a straw hat, brown sports shirt, blue levis and brown shoes. Varnell Betty S-Charlene 520508 p1 Three (two) Dead in Accident Near Vernalis: Betty S & Charlene Varnell; Three persons died as the result of a flaming two-car auto crash at the intersection of Maze Road and River Road early Sunday morning. Killed were a month old infant Charlene Varnell, daughter of South Modesto sailor, and Mrs. Senia Wilson, 36, of Pioneer, driver of one of the cars. Mrs. Betty Sue Varnell,18, mother of the infant, died Monday night in the county hospital as the result of injuries receive in the accident. The sailor Charles E. Varnell, 21, is in Oak Knoll Hospital. His condition is described as critical and physicians said he had a 50-50 chance of pulling through. Two others in the accident, Arlene Wilson, 13, and Doris Hoadley, 14, both of Pioneer, are hospitalized with multiple injuries and burns. The Wilson girl suffered multiple serious face cuts, a fractured pelvis, two broken legs and possible internal injuries. The Hoadley girl received a fractured arm, multiple serious cuts and some bruises. California Highway Patrol officers said Mrs. Wilson, driving south on River Road, evidently failed to heed a boulevard stop sign. Varnell was driving west on Maze road. Wickford Henry 520724 p1 Henry Wickford Passes Away; Henry Wickford, 60, passed away Sunday in a Modesto Hospital as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was a native of Guetersloh, Germany. Wickford moved away from Patterson once, but returned in 1933 and lived here until his death. He is survived by his wife, Jenny of Patterson; one daughter, Mrs. Elsie Yeager of Coquille, Ore.; and one son, Robert Wickford of Los Angeles. Services were held yesterday at 10 a.m. at Evans Chapel. Rev. C. A. Nylund officiated. Interment was in Del Puerto Cemetery. Wilson Senia 520508 p1 Three (two) Dead in Accident Near Vernalis: Senia Wilson; Three persons died as the result of a flaming two-car auto crash at the intersection of Maze Road and River Road early Sunday morning. Killed were a month old infant Charlene Varnell, daughter of South Modesto sailor, and Mrs. Senia Wilson, 36, of Pioneer, driver of one of the cars. Mrs. Betty Sue Varnell,18, mother of the infant, died Monday night in the county hospital as the result of injuries receive in the accident. The sailor Charles E. Varnell, 21, is in Oak Knoll Hospital. His condition is described as critical and physicians said he had a 50-50 chance of pulling through. Two others in the accident, Arlene Wilson, 13, and Doris Hoadley, 14, both of Pioneer, are hospitalized with multiple injuries and burns. The Wilson girl suffered multiple serious face cuts, a fractured pelvis, two broken legs and possible internal injuries. The Hoadley girl received a fractured arm, multiple serious cuts and some bruises. California Highway Patrol officers said Mrs. Wilson, driving south on River Road, evidently failed to heed a boulevard stop sign. Varnell was driving west on Maze road. Young; Thomas E Young, 84, died Saturday morning in the home of his daughter and son-in- law, Mr. And Mrs. Earl Cisco at Westley. He was a native of Texas. Surviving him are his wife, Mary A. Young; seven sons, W. A. Young, J. B. Young and T. S. Young of Hope, New Mexico; A. C. Young of Tucson, Arizona; F. L. Young of Santa Fe, New Mexico; E. S. Young of Whittier and J. L. Young of Patterson. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Cisco of Westley and Miss Lella young of Patterson. Remains were shipped to Hope, N. M., Tuesday and burial was to be there today.
