Morehart Lynne 531029 p1 Lynne Morehart, 2, Drowns In Irrigation Canal Sump Hole; Two year old Lynne Morehart drowned yesterday morning in a sump hole of the Patterson Water Co. only a few moments after her mother had noticed she was missing. Lynne Lynette, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Morehart, was pulled out of the sump hole by her mother about 10 a. m. yesterday. Mrs. Morehart phoned Dr. Edgar DeMar who immediately alerted the Patterson Fire Department resuscitator squad, but efforts to revive the child wore in vain. Mrs. Morehart said she heard her daughter playing in the yard with her dog, then after a few moments she noticed the sound of playing was missing. She called the dog and when the dog came it was wet all over. Mrs. Morehart said she didn't think too much about this because the irrigation canal had been empty for weeks, so she didn't start to look for Lynne right away. About 15 minutes after Lynne had disappeared, her mother began to search for her. She found her in the sump hole where the canal passes under Sycamore Ave., about 200 yards north of Eucalyptus Ave. She jumped into the water and pulled Lynne out and called for help, but it was too late. Mrs. Morehart said Lynne must have fallen from the road into the sump hole, because there was a bump on her head. The child had walked across the road and about 50 yards south of the house to the canal. The stagnant water was teeming with small fish life and it is possible Lynne was standing on the edge of the canal watching the tadpoles. George Morehart farms in Crows Landing and Westley and the Moreharts rent the home they live in on Sycamore. They have lived there four years. Peterson CP 530528 p1 Death Ends Lifetime of Service to Church, People For C. P. Peterson; Funeral services were conducted at the Mission Covenant Church Monday afternoon for Charles P. Peterson, 84, whose lifetime of devotion to his community and church ended suddenly and peacefully Friday night at 10 :45. The Patterson mayor had suffered some pain in his chest Friday afternoon, and following two fainting spells, was taken to Del Puerto Hospital. Typical of his life, he spent the early evening at the hospital quietly talking tn his family and worrying about the future of his church . The last three things that needed to be attended by C.P. were transferred to his daughter, Mrs. William Ralston. He asked her to finish addressing cards announcing the Mission Covenant Brotherhood meeting for Monday night, to notify Mrs. Wellemeyer that he wouldn't be able to attend the Naturalization class graduation, to ask Erick Ohlson to take his Sunday School class. His life was in order and he passed away in his sleep. Death was caused by coronary thrombosis. C. P. Peterson was born in the province of Smaland, Sweden, May 31, 1869. He remained in his native land through his youth, completing what amounts to two years of college, and came to America in 1894. He settled in Aspen, Colorado, where he met Miss Anna Anderson. They were married March 12, 1898. Married 55 Years; The Peterson's celebrated their 55th anniversary this year, and on March 19 traveled to Salina, Kansas, where they attended the 75th anniversary observance of the Covenant Church there. C. P. had been chairman of the Salina Church prior to moving to Patterson in 1923. They spent a month visiting relatives and long time friends. The Peterson's moved to Enterprise, Kansas, shortly after their marriage. C. P. became the proprietor of a general merchandise store and served two terms as mayor of the city. In 1921 they moved to Salina. Members of the family remember the years in Enterprise and Salina with laughter as the growing up days spent in school, church and their fathers store. C. P., they say, was a firm believer in discipline in school, and a spanking at school meant a spanking at home. While he was, a trustee of the union school district at Enterprise, sons LeRoy and Rutherford ditched high school one day to attend a game at Abilene, contrary to the orders of the principal. They arrived home for a long serious talk with their father, who made them apologize to the principal and the other trustees before they were eligible to return to school. LeRoy is now a school trustee in Turlock. Peterson knew no English when he arrived in this country, but he was an avid reader and Bible student. Just as he believed whole heartedly in the work of pastors, he believed in the teachers. He served as a Patterson Elementary School trustee for about eight years, starting in 1926 or 27. His daughter, Mrs. Paul Johnson says that he never criticized a pastor or teacher in the presence of children. Religious Man; As a young man C.P. committed his life to the church. He rarely missed a service in his church and many times attended other churches in town. As a father he sought to rear his children in the Christian life. The family said daily devotions included in his daily prayer were his family, his pastor, his church, his fellow workers and those in place of leadership and responsibility. Mrs. Johnson recalls that the children always accompanied their parents to church. She says they never were disciplined in church, but C.P. would often reach into his pocket for pepper mint candy when the sermon was getting long. C.P. first came to Patterson in 1911 and brought land. However, it was 1923 when the family moved here. His sons, Rutherford, LeRoy and Eldon, and his brother Gus, preceded the family to Patterson. The Peterson's settled at 209 N. 3nd, Street until 1943 when they moved to 316 N. 3rd Street. Peterson worked for Gus a short time in a market located at the present Red & White site. He then became manager of the Mutual Creamery & Market where Golden Valley Creamery is now located. This later became McMarr's 's Store and then Safeway. He remained as manager of Safeway as the store was moved to the spot where Leaf's now stands. In 1939 at the age of 70, he retired from a paying job to one of community service. He has served on the City Council for 17 years and since last December had been mayor. C, P. was a director of the Commercial Bank since 1925, and he has been treasurer for a number of years. Her has served on the City council for 17 years, and since last December had been mayor. C.P. was a director of the commercial Bank since 1925, and he had been treasurer for a number of years. Served A, Deacon; At the Mission Covenant Church he was deacon for 27 years, chairman of the congregation for 24 years and superintend of the Sunday School for a number of years. In addition he served 15 years on the board of the California Conference Bible camp grounds at Mission Springs, six years on the executive board of the conference and 26 years on the board of the Emanuel Hospital in Turlock. Following his death, letters wires, telephone calls and floral tributes were received by the family from longtime friends throughout the nation. The Rev. C. A.
