Interment will be at Del Puerto Cemetery. Survivors include a brother, John Medeiros, of Central Road, Ceres. Atterbury Emily R 601027 p1 Private Services for Mrs. Atterbury; Mrs. Emily B. Atterbury, 89, was found dead Tuesday morning in her home on Armstrong Road, Crows Landing. She is believed to have died late Thursday, from a skull fracture suffered in a fall. She was found by her tenant, Don W. Sequeira, about 9:20 am. after the mailman said she hadn't gotten her mail since last Thursday. Private services were held yesterday at the Chapel of the Chimes in Piedmont, followed by cremation. Mrs. Atterbury s grandfather came to California in 1850, captain of a ship bringing prefabricated homes to San Francisco from Tasmania. His crew deserted and headed for the gold fields, and he was forced to remain in San Francisco with his family, for lack of a crew. Mrs. Atterbury came to Crow Landing as a bride in 1906, and resided there the rest of her life. Survivors include a sister, Miss Louise Rowland of Berkeley; two nieces, Mrs. John Zvnuska of Berkeley, and Mrs. Bayard H. Jones of Sewanae, Tennessee; a nephew, William Rowland of Palo Alto. Bernal Minty E 600301 p1 Services Held For Sykes Sister; Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday for Mrs. Minty Eva Bernal, 61, who passed away in her home in San Jose last Friday from a heart ailment. Pastor Walter Holtan of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church officiated. Interment was in Del Puerto Cemetery in the family plot. Mrs. Bernal was a native of California. She leaves a sister, Mrs. Hubert Sykes, of Patterson; a brother, Franklin W. Horr of Montebello and three nieces. Bettes Carl E 600421 p1 Bettes Killed in Cycle Accident; Services were held at 2 p.m. yesterday for Carl Eugene Bettes; 19 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bettes, at Evans Chapel. The youth was killed in a motorcycle mishap in Del Puerto Canyon Sunday afternoon. A native of Wewoka, Okla., he had lived in Patterson most of his life, he graduated from Patterson Union High School with the class last June and was a student at Modesto Junior College. Interment was at Del Puerto Cemetery. Bettes' motorcycle went out of control on a curve in the canyon about five miles west of town. A passenger, William Blosser, 16, of Eucalyptus Ave jumped off the motorcycle, but Bettes hung on as the motorcycle went down an incline, struck a culvert and rolled over. Bettes died from the injuries, en route to Del Puerto Hospital by ambulance. Blosser, who was treated at Del Puerto Hospital for a broken arm and released, said the motorcycle was completing a left turn on a curve when it suddenly went straight ahead. Bettes is survived by his parents; a brother, Harold E. Bettes of Odessa, Texas; and two uncles, Harry Bettes of Patterson and Frank Bettes of Tracy. Bjorkland Ester 600804 p8 Mrs. Bjorkland Passes in Turlock; Final rites were conducted July 27 in Turlock for Mrs. Ester Bjorkland. The sister-in- law of Mrs. Bud Robers, she was a member of Eastern Star and a frequent visitor in Patterson. She leaves her husband, Vider Bjorkland of Turlock; a daughter, Mrs. Carlene Britton of Newfoundland; and a son, Vider Bjorkland of Modesto; and three grandchildren. Burns Robert D 601110 p1 Charge Manslaughter to Navy Mechanic: Harvel D Patterson & Robert D. Burns; James F. Murtaugh, Alameda Naval Air Station jet mechanic, will be arraigned in Patterson Judicial Court on two felony counts of involuntary manslaughter. The charges were filed by the district attorney s office after two weeks of investigation following a violent October 21 head-on crash on Highway 33 south of Patterson in which two persons were killed. Killed instantly were Harvel D. Patterson. 21, also a jet mechanic at Alameda NAS and a friend of Murtaugh's, and Robert D. Burns, 39, truck driver from St. Paul, Minn. The charge against Murtaugh, who was not directly involved in the crash, alleges that the felony manslaughter occurred as the result of a misdemeanor unlawful act. A highway patrolman, James F. Young, said that, Murtaugh and Patterson had been racing down the highway at speeds up to 90 miles per hour when Patterson pulled out and rammed head-on into Burns truck, killing both drivers. Campbell Ruth V 600516 p1 Final Rites For Mrs. Ruth Campbell; Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Evans Chapel for Mrs. Ruth Virginia Campbell, 64, who passed away Saturday morning at her 325 No. 3rd St. home after a long illness. Rev. Albert W. Foster officiated and interment was at Lakewood Memorial Park near Empire. She was a native of Virginia and had lived here about 30 years. She is survived by her widow, J. Marlar Campbell of Patterson; a son Chattin Campbell of Modesto; four grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Linda Butler of Austin, TX; and a brother, Chattin Bradway of Seattle, WA. She was a native of Concho, Arizona, and had lived in Stanislaus County four years. A native of Tulare County, she had lived in Watsonville before coming here four years ago She is survived by her husband Robert of Patterson; mother, Mrs, Margaret Hay of Hollister; two brothers. Correia Joseph D Sr 600101 p1 Services Today For Pioneer Resident of Crows Landing; Funeral services will be held this morning at Davis Hansen Chapel in Newman for Joseph Dutra Correia, Sr., of Rt. 1, Box 240, Crows Landing, who passed away at his ranch home last Saturday evening. The funeral procession will leave the chapel at 9 a.m. this morning and proceed to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Crows Landing for 10 a.m. funeral Mass. Father Harold J. Beutler, C. M., will officiate. Interment will be at Hills Ferry Catholic Cemetery. Rosary was recited last night at Davis Hansen Chapel. Correia was 79 and a native of Castelo Branch Parish on the Island of Fayal in the Azores. (missing line) June 18, 1890, settling on the East Coast and later moving to Monterey County on the West Coast where he remained until moving to Grayson in 1901. He became a U. S. citizen in 1900. He moved to Crows Landing, on his present ranch, in 1902, and in 1906 was united in marriage to Miss Mary Alvernez of Oakland. Surviving are his wife, Mary, of Crows Landing; two daughters, Miss Elizabeth Correia of Crows Landing and Mrs. Evelyn Cordoza of Los Banos; a son, Harold Correia of Crows Landing and four grandchildren. Proceeding him in death was a son, Joe Correia, Jr. He was a member of the Crows Landing Council, IDES, and the UPEC in Newman. Costa Brian 601222 p1 Youth Killed in Hunting Accident; Brain Costa, 17 year-old Downy High School student, died last Saturday afternoon in a hunting accident in Del Puerto Canyon. A companion, Tim Machado, 14, of Modesto, shot Costa in the head while pumping shells from his .22 rifle. The bullet entered Costa's brain and he was taken to the Faith Ranch where the ambulance was called, emergency aid given and the boy was brought to Del Puerto Hospital where he died about 2:20 p.m. The accident occurred about 10:30 am. Accompanying the two boys were Ronnie McSparin, 16, and John Shaw, 16 of Modesto. Costa was driving in the canyon when they spotted a squirrel, stopped, and Shaw and Machado fired at it through the car window. Machado's bullet knocked a hole in the edge of the windowing and Machado began pumping the shells from his gun when it accidentally discharged, the bullet hitting Costa in the head. Costa was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Costa of Modesto. Covarrubias Aurora 601103 p8 Graveside Services for 3-Day-Old girl; Graveside services were held last Thursday afternoon at the St. Mary's Cemetery for three day old Aurora Covarrubias, who passed away October 27 at a Modesto hospital. Rev. Robert Craft officiated. His parents, Mr. And Mrs. Rudolfo Covarrubias, have one other child, two-years-old Angel. Del Nero Domenico 600331 p1 Final Rites for Domenico Del Nero; Rosary was recited Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Evans Chapel for Domenico Del N.ero, 75, who passed away in Modesto Saturday evening. Mass was held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Interment was at Hills Ferry Cemetery. A native of Italy, he resided in Crows Landing before moving to a Modesto rest home. He was a long time West Side resident. Del Nero was taken to a hospital, from the rest home, around 3 p.m. Saturday, and he died at 10 p.m. Sheriff s officers are investigating the case, because Del Nero had several broken ribs, bruises and a black eye. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs Albina Del Nero of Crows Landing and a sister in Italy; three nieces, Mrs. Manuel Costa of Patterson, Mrs. May Forsyther of Turlock and Mrs. Lillian Palmer of San Jose; four nephews, George, William and Thomas Del Nero of Crows Landing, and Charles Del Nero of Patterson. Dixon Pete 600414 p1 Services Today For Pete Dixon; Graveside services will be held today at 3 p.m. for Pete Dixon, 88, who passed away Monday morning in a Modesto hospital following a three week illness. Pastor Walter Holtan will officiate and interment will be at Del Puerto Cemetery. Dixon had lived in this area since 1926, working as a mule skinner until that occupation was outdated. He had been retired for many years. He was a native of Kentucky. His only known survivor is a daughter believed to be residing in Kentucky or Florida. Donnelly Doris M 601201 p1 Services Held for Mrs. Donnelly; Services were held at 10 am Saturday at Evans Chapel for Mrs. Doris Mae Donnelly, 41, in Tulsa, OK. Rev. Franklin Satterberg officiated and interment was in Del Puerto Cemetery. Mrs. Donnelly attended and graduated from local schools. She is survived by a sister Mrs. David Leaf of Patterson, and two brothers, Jerome Hedlind of Gustine and Francis Hedlind of Chico. Dryden Calvin 600204 p1 Final Rites Wednesday for Calvin Dryden; Final rites were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Warden's Funeral Chapel in Chowchilla for Calvin Dryden, 48, who died suddenly of a heart attack Sunday afternoon in Chowchilla. He leaves his wife, Oma, of Chowchilla; two brothers, Don Dryden, Sr., of Patterson and Paul Dryden of Quincy; and a sister, Mrs. Jeanette Michelson, of Van Nuys. Dryden had lived in Patterson from 1941 to 1944. Elsey Reece G 600421 p1 Reece G. Elsey Dies Suddenly; Reece G. Elsey, 59, manager of the Patterson branch., Stanislaus Implement & Hardware Co., died suddenly in Modesto last week Wednesday. A native of Mt. Vernon, MO, he had lived in Modesto two years and in the state 16 years. He was a past master of Lodge No. 284, F&AM, Aurora, MO, and was a member of the First Southern Baptist church. Services were conducted in the Calvary Baptist Church Saturday at 2pm by the Rev. Charles F. Foley and Patterson Lodge No. 488, F&AM. Interment was in Masonic Cemetery with Salas Brothers-Moore Chapel in charge. He is survived by his widow, Nola C. Elsey of Modesto; two sons, Ward Kenneth Elsey of Van Nuys and Joe Lester Elsey of Stockton; a brother, Frank Cecil Elsey of Prior, OK; and three grandchildren. Ford Frank E 600804 p1 Final Riles For F. E. "Pop" Ford; Frank E."Pop" Ford, 75, died July 27 in Del Puerto Hospital after an extended illness. A native of Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County, he had lived in Patterson since 1942. He was a former custodian at Patterson Union High School. Popular with the students, he was honored by them during the 1955 PUHS Youth Day. He leaves his widow Linda E. of 670 I Street; a daughter, Mrs. Frances Hoessel of Patterson; a son, Leroy Ford of Santa Cruz; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Randall of San Francisco, Mrs. Ella Matheson and Zita Ford, both of Oakland. Services were at 10 am Saturday in the Evans Chapel with the Rev. Walter Holtan of Our Saviour s Lutheran Church officiating. Cremation was in Lakewood Memorial Chapel near Empire. The family requested that any remembrance be sent to Arthur Stangeland for the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children in San Francisco. Friedrich Grace I 600623 p1 Services Held for Grace Fredrich; Grace Ina Friedrich was born on January 3, 1888 at Milford, Illinois of parents, Charles B. Crain and Ella M. Brougher. She passed away at a Modesto hospital! on June 16 after being hospitalized for a month. Unfortunately, she had been in poor health for years. Her exact age was 72 years, 5 months and 13 days. The Crain family lived on the farm, and Grace received the grammar school education in her day. On the 22 day of December, 1909, she was united in marriage to William Albert Friedrich at Hopeston, Illinois. To this union were born three children, namely. Bertha, Maurice and William. After several years of married life, Mr. Friedrich felt the call to enter the holy ministry, and he was ordained as a pastor in the M. E. Church. Only two years later he died on March 20, 1922, following surgery at Ft. Wayne, Indiana. In 1930 Grace Friedrich and her three children came to Patterson, California. She worked as a telephone operator for the Evans Telephone Company for eighteen years. Her residence has been in Patterson. She affiliated with the Lutheran Church here in Patterson. Mrs. Friedrich is survived by her three children, Bertha Edith, Mrs. J. E. Vincent, Turlock; Maurice, Patterson; and William Henry, San Diego, all of California. The following brothers and sister are still living: Fred B. Crain, Ceres, Calif.; Ralph C. Crain. Hoopeston, Ill.; Mary Ruth Fairchild, Rankin, Ill.; Robert R. Crain, Indianapolis, Indiana; and Charles W. Crain, Rossville. Ill.; and five grandsons. Besides her parents, Lilly, Mae, Bertie, Walter L. Crain and Edith Hope Lee have departed in death. Funeral services were held at the Evans Funeral Chapel on Saturday morning. Mrs. Arnold Finseth accompanied on the organ by Mrs. J. Slone, sang two hymns, In the Garden, and Abide with Me. The body was then shipped to Hoopeston, Illinois where a service will be held at the Hamilton Funeral home and committal be made in the family lot in the Floral Hill Cemetery at Hooperston, where her husband was laid to rest in 1922. Furtado; Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m tonight at Evans Chapel for Mrs. Marian D. Furtado, 68, who passed away suddenly early Tuesday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bernice Garcia. The funeral procession will form at 9:30 a m. Friday morning at Evans Chapel, and proceed to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church for 10 a.m. mass. Interment will be at St. Dominic's Cemetery in Benicia. She was a native of Vallejo. She is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Marie Sizemore of Merced, Mrs. Dorothy Borges of Gridley, Mrs. Genevieve Hess of Fresno, Mrs. Delores Barletta. and Mrs. Bernice Garcia of Patterson, and Mrs. Joyce Flock of Wisconsin: three sons, Francis Furtado of Gilroy, Anthony Silva of Vallejo and Manuel Furtado of Patterson. Five sisters, Mrs. Florence Lentz of Benecia, Mrs. Nellie Sousa, Mrs. Virginia Uram and Josephine Cheatum of Napa, and Lily Silva of Vallejo; two brothers, Anthony Brazil of Benicia and George Brazil of Vallejo; 32 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Gerhart Paul D 600714 p1 Military Services for Paul Gerhart; Paul D. Gerhart, 20, ATS2 U.S Navy, was killed in an automobile accident on Oahu, Hawaii, July 5. Military services were held yesterday at the chapel of the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno. Born and reared in Tracy, his home is in Westley. He was flying early warning radar missions in Hawaii. He had been in the service two and a half years, the last year and a half in Hawaii. He has many friends in the Patterson area. He is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Gerhart of Westley. Gidding Sam W 601020 p1 Final Rites for Winfleld Giddings; Final rites were conducted at 10 am, yesterday in Evans Chapel for Sam Winfield Giddings, 71, who died of an apparent heart attack Saturday morning. Rev. Albert Foster, pastor of the Federated Church. officiated and interment was in Del Puerto Cemetery. A native of Kentucky, Giddings had lived five years in this area, an employee at the T. C. Daily ranch north of Westley. He had been a ranch worker for the Daily family in Southern California the previous 40 years. He leaves a brother, R. L. Giddings, of Gustine and 13 brothers and sisters in the Midwest. Giddings was found lying beside his tractor in an alfalfa field, apparently having been stricken while operating it. Gilbert W H 600331 p1 Shorty Gilbert Passes Away After A Lengthy Illness; Pioneer West Sider Judge W. H. "Shorty" Gilbert passed away Tuesday night at Del Puerto Hospital after an illness that began last August. The 74 year old native of Ohio led a colorful life and had a long career of public service. A graduate of Drake University Law School, he was admitted to the practice of law in 1912 in Iowa. He opened a law office in Patterson in 1913 and had lived in Stanislaus county since then. He was a member of the first board of trustees when the City of Patterson was incorporated in 1919. He was appointed justice of the peace in Newman Township in 1930, resigning in 1938 when he was appointed chief probation officer of .Stanislaus County, a position he held until 1944. He was appointed justice of the peace in Patterson Township November, l953, and held that position until his death. He owned an auto agency in Newman for some years. Hunting was his chief hobby, and he operated a duck club in the TuIe Lake area for many years, developing and selling his own duck picker. More recently he operated a duck club on the East Side of the San Joaquin River, near the San Joaquin County line. Services will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Franklin and Downs Chapel in Modesto with Rev. Albert Foster, pastor of the local Federated Church officiating. Inurnment will be at the Modesto Masonic Cemetery. He is survive by his widow, Sue, of Patterson; a daughter, Elva Jane Eastwood of Stockton; a son, Robert Gilbert of Stockton; a sister, Mrs. Julie Peters of Patterson: and six grandchildren. Girard; Services were held at 10:30 am Tuesday for Clarence Arthur Girard, 67, caretaker at the Turlock Sportsmen's Club, who committed suicide Thursday night at his home on the club grounds. Interment was at the Turlock cemetery. Mrs. Girard said her husband had been despondent over ill health. He is survived by his wife, Velma; two daughters, Erma Mae Reddy of Independence, Kans., and Mrs. Charlene McGar of Ceres; a son, Daniel A. Girard of Crows Landing; a brother, Pearl Gerard of Oklahoma, and a sister, Fern Hull of Stockton. Gomes Lorinne E 600915 p1 22-Year-Old Mother Passes Away after Birth of Daughter; The county coroner's office is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death of 22 year-old Lorinne Elaine Gomes, who died at Del Puerto Hospital last week Wednesday evening after giving birth to a daughter. Mrs Gomes and her husband, Clarence, were in the process of moving to Patterson from Gustine. Rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Sunday at Evans Chapel, and mass was held at 10 am Monday at the Sacred Heart Church. Interment was in St. Mary's cemetery. She was a native of Patterson, a member of Council 121 SPRISI and a member of the Luso American Society of Patterson. She is survived by her husband, Clarence; the infant daughter and another daughter, Deborah Ann; a brother, Joe C Martin of Patterson; and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Martin of Patterson. Groulx Lawrence 600922 p1 Final Riles for Lawrence Groulx; Services will be held at Halsted Chapel in San Francisco for Lawrence Groulx, 57; who died Monday evening of an apparent heart attack at his home on Kiburn Road near Crows Landing; The remains were transferred to San Francisco Tuesday by Evans Chapel. Groulx was stricken in the bathtub. He was rushed to Del Puerto Hospital by ambulance and was pronounced dead on arrival. He is survived by his wife, Alberta, and two sisters in the Bay Area. Survivors include his widow, Clevie Lucille Guttery of Patterson; four sons, Eddie and David of Dallas, Tex., and David Jr. and Willie Lee of Patterson; two daughters. Mrs. Dorothy Barnes of Dallas and Shirley Denice Guttery of Patterson; two bothers, Lum of Texas and Johnnie of Oklahoma; and a sister, Mrs. Ella Rees of Texas. Hansen Chris D 600114 p1 Turlock Man Dies in Three Car Crash; Chris 0. Hansen, 40, of Turlock, was killed in a three car crash at West Main near Carpenter Road Friday evening. He was eastbound on West Main when his car struck the. rear of another eastbound car, driven by Homer Eugene Gamble, 28, of Turlock. Hansen's car swerved into the path of an oncoming car driven by Clyde A. Halverson, 42, of Oakland. Halverson and a passenger in Gamble s car, Beverly Brashears, 18, of Patterson were taken to Del Puerto Hospital. where Halverson was admitted with cuts and bruises on his chest and Miss Brashers was treated for minor injuries and released. Hansen was employed by Contractor John Delphia. Hansen Lloyd Mrs 600714 p1 Relative Passes in Illinois; Word has been received or the sudden death of Mrs. Lloyd Hansen of Glen Ellyn, Ill. She will be remembered as the young woman who spent a month the early part of this year at Del Puerto Hospital after sustaining a heart attack on her first day in California. McDonnell Walter L 600721 p1 Pilot Dies When Two Jets Collide In Air Near Crows Landing Naval Base; One Navy jet pilot died last Wednesday night when two jet fighters collided in the air during practice maneuvers at the Crows Landing Naval Auxiliary Landing Field. Dead was Lt. Jg. Walter L. McDonnell, Jr., of Portland, Ore., who rode his flaming jet to the ground. The pilot of the other craft, Lt. Wiley Craig, 24, of Lost Hills, Calif., was able to eject from his burning jet, suffering burns of the face and neck and spraining both ankles. Commander Ralph Hoffmeister said the planes were in two squadrons from Moffett field practicing simulated carrier landings. Craig's Demon jet developed nose gear trouble after a touch, and slid off the runway and probably blew a tire, Hoffmeister said. Craig was able to get the craft airborne, but McDonald, flying a Fury jet, had been dispatched to see what was wrong with Craig's jet. McDonald apparently misjudged the space of the two planes and rammed the rear of Craig's Damon. Both jets caught fire immediately. The crash occurred about 1,200 feet in the air, four miles southwest of the base. Both planes plummeted into a field. Mullally Mike 600623 p1 Mike Mullally, Pioneer Dies; Mike Mullally, native born pioneer of the Patterson area, passed away Sunday in San Carlos after a lengthy illness. Services were held at 1pm Tuesday at the Little White Oak chapel in San Carlos. Mullally, about 70 when he passed away, was born in Kern Canyon in the hills west of Patterson. He homesteaded in the hills, working on neighboring ranches to earn money while he "proved up" his homestead. He raised cattle up to five years ago when he leased his range. He owned 960 acres in Kern Canyon and about 4,000 acres in Salado and Orestimba Canyon. Mike's Peak is named after Mullally. It overlooks Orestimba Canyon where Salado Canyon and Crow Creek meet. A Civil Defense lookout station was operated there during World War II. Mullally left here about 36 years ago, but was a frequent visitor and active cattle raiser. He worked in the Bay Area for several years after leaving here. He is survived by his wife, Hannah; and a daughter, Mrs. Jack Kildae, of San Carlos. Preceding him in death was a daughter, Isabel. Shirley Clarence 600407 p1 Final Rites For Former Resident; Funeral Services were held at Franklin Downs in Modesto last week Wednesday for Clarence "Bud" Shirley, 58, who passed away in Modesto March 30 after a short illness. A native of Denning, Ark., he had lived in Patterson several years ago working on ranches and in the post office. Interment was at Lakewood Cemetery. Surviving are his widow, Gertrude; four children, Harold Shirley and Mrs. Jean Thomas of Modesto, Mrs. Patsy DeBoo of Sacramento and Mrs. Hellen Willis of Michigan; three sisters, Mrs. E. D. Spencer Thomas M 600825 p1 Graveside Services; Graveside services were conducted Monday afternoon in St Mary's Cemetery for Thomas Malcom Spencer, stillborn infant son of Mr. and Mrs. John Spencer of Lemon Avenue who died Saturday in a Modesto hospital. The Rev. H. J. Beutler officiated. The boy also is survived by a brother, David, and a sister, Kay Cecilia Spencer. Sperry Dennis R 600901 p1 Friday in Hit-Run Death of Young Dennis Sperry; Valente Gonzales Araiza, 27, of 1419 Hazelton, Stockton, will appear at 11am Friday in Patterson Judicial District court for a preliminary hearing on a felony charge of hit and run driving which resulted in the death of eight year old Dennis Richard Sperry Sunday afternoon. Araizo, who turned himself in to police in Stockton some four hours after the fatal accident, was arraigned Monday before Judge Reuben Swanson, Jr., who set bail at $5,250. The arraignment was handled through an interpreter since Araizo speaks only Spanish. Araiza is charged with failing to stop after his auto struck Dennis Richard Sperry on Rogers Road about five miles northwest of Patterson, fatally injuring him. His grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Merton Sperry of 117 South 6th Street, and his seven year old brother, Danny, witnessed the accident. Mrs. Sperry had taken the children with her when she drove to the ranch to bring gasoline to her husband, who was operating a tractor on the Gnesa Bros. Ranch on Rogers Road. She also brought some lemonade, and she and her husband were sitting in the car, drinking lemonade. The two boys were playing alongside the road. Dennis walked across the road and had turned to face his grandparents when the car struck him. He was carried about 150 feet before he fell off the car. Margaret Nicklaus of Modesto, as school teacher, w3as driving north on Rogers Road, some distance behind the hit and run car. She waw dust rise from the road and thought an animal had been hit. She hurried to the scene to find the maimed boy. Araiza said he became panic stricken when he hit the boy. He told how he slammed on his brakes, but couldn't avoid hitting Sperry. Araiza said he stopped in Westley to try to repair the car. He washed the blood off the car, and hooked a chain to the front end and around a tree, backing up to try to pull out the mashed in front. At the intersection of Highway 33 and 132, his car broke drown. He said he thumbed a ride to Tracy, then took a bus to Stockton where he turned himself in to police at 9:10 pm Sunday, about four and a half hours after the 4:45 p.m. accident. Services for Dennis are scheduled for 1am this morning at Evans chapel. Interment will be at Del Puerto cemetery. Rev A. T. Norman, pastor of the first Southern Baptist church will officiate. A native of Patterson, Dennis is survived by his father, Melvin Sperry of Reno; his mother, Dolores Torres of Pittsburgh; his brother, Daniel David, 7, of Patterson; and his grandparents, with whom he lived, Mr. and Mrs. Merton Sperry of Patterson. Tosta ;Requiem mass will be celebrated at 10 am, today in Sacred Heart Catholic Church for John Cardoza Costa, 75, who passed away Sunday at Del Puerto Hospital after a long illness. Rosary was recited at 8 last night at Evans Chapel. Interment will be in Hills Ferry Cemetery. The procession will form at the chapel at 9:30 this morning and proceed to the church. Tosta was a retired dairyman and a native of the Azores. He had been a resident of this area for 40 years and was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Los Banos. Surviving are his widow, Mary of Patterson; three daughters, Mrs. Mary J. Ford of Merced; Mrs. Eva Borges of Los Banos and Mrs. Rose J. Catalano of San Diego; three sons, Joe Tosta of Crows Landing, John C. Tosta, Jr., of San Diego and Frank Tosta of Vista; 15 grandchildren; three great grand children; and three brothers, Manuel and Antone of Brazil and Joe of the Azores. Twidt Marie 600721 P1 Mother Passes in North Dakota; Mrs. Marie Twidt, mother of Mrs. George Kjonaas of Patterson, passed away in Minot, ND, July 10. Services were held in Minot July 15. She was 86. Mrs Twidt has lived with Mr. and Mrs. Kjonaas several times during past years. Survivors include three sons, four daughters, 29 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her husband, one son and two daughters. Victorino Antonio M 600516 p1 Services Held For A. M. Victorino; Rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Evans Chapel for Antonio M. Victorino, 74, retired dairyman who died Saturday at Del Puerto Hospital after a long illness. The funeral procession left the chapel at 9:30am Wednesday following by a requiem mass at 10am in Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment was in St. Mary's cemetery. A native of the Azores, Victorino had been a resident of this area for 44 years. He was a member of the local chapters, IDES and UPEC. He is survived by his widow, Virginia; and four sisters, Mrs. Anna Pereira of Patterson, Mrs. Mary Alvernaz of Crows Landing, Mrs. Olympic Furtado of Tracy and Mrs. Rose Faria of the Azores. Welch John 600721 P1 Former Resident Dies in Oakland; John Welch, former Dodge dealer in Patterson, passed away Saturday in Oakland where he had made his home for many years. He was a past commander of the local American Legion Post. Several Legionnaires attended services in Oakland Tuesday. Williams Corrine 601027 p1 Services Held For Corrinne Williams; Services were held at Evans Chapel at 10am Monday for Corrine Williams, 45, of 115 So. 6th St. She died instantly last Thursday night when she fell, striking her head on the sidewalk on El Circulo, near Johnny's Club. An autopsy revealed head injuries were the cause of her death. She was a native of Iowa and had lived here 40 years. Rev. Franklin Satterberg officiated, and interment was in Del Puerto Cemetery. Survivors include her mother, Mrs. Maude L. Williams of Patterson; and three brothers; VerDayne and Wendal Williams of Patterson and DeVere Williams of Oakhurst. Williams Lulu G 600728 p8 Final Rites for Oakland Woman; Mrs Lulu Gertrude Williams aunt of Mrs. Grace Rabbiosi of Patterson, passed away at her Oakland home July 19 at the age of 91. Mrs. Williams visited at the Rabbiosi home on Pomelo Ave. many times and had many friends in Patterson. She had the misfortune to fall and break her hip two years ago, and had been confined to a chair since then. She was a member of Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband. Surviving are a sister, Grace Arnold, and a brother, Clarence Eaton Young, both of Oakland. Services and interment were held in Oakland July 22
