Mrs. Amundson is survived by her husband, Emil of Turlock; her mother, Mrs. Julie Mourel of Turlock; one daughter, Adele Bowron of Turlock; two brothers, Harry Anderson of San Diego and Walter Coleyico; one sister, Helen Sterling of Detroit; and one grandchild. She was a member of Our Saviour s Lutheran Church in Patterson. The Allen Mortuary is located at 247 N. Broadway in Turlock. Andrade Manuel G 650225 p1 Services Today for Manuel Andrade, 83; Final rites will be conducted at 10 a.m. this morning, Thurs., at Evans Funeral Chapel for Manuel Garcia Andrade, 83, who died Monday afternoon in a local hospital. Interment will be in the Patterson District Cemetery. Andrade was a native of California and had lived in Stanislaus County 54 years. He was a retired farmer. He is survived by his wife, Bessie; three sons, Manuel Jr of Los Angeles, Ernest of San Francisco, and Herman of Roseville; one daughter, Beverly Silva of Modesto; two step-daughters, Margaret Webb of Vallejo and Opal Dow of Auburn; and one brother, Joseph of Auburn. Avila Joseph D 651223 p1 Services Held For Joseph Avila; Funeral services were conducted in Tracy last Friday for Joseph D. Avila, 40, of near Tracy who was killed December 13 when be stepped in front of a car on Grant Line Road. Avila had just unhooked his truck from another truck that he had towed from the mud along the shoulder of the highway when the accident occurred. The driver of the car which struck Avila, said Avila unexpectedly stepped directly in the path of the car. Among his survivors are his wile, Mrs. Mary Louise Avila of Banta and formerly of Patterson, and two sons, Daniel and Ronald AviIa, both of Modesto. Daniel is a 1964 graduate of Patterson High School. Mary, 46, of Armstrong Road, Crows Landing, in St. Joaquim's Catholic Church in Newman. The two people were killed Wednesday evening, March 24, in a car-train accident near Turlock. The rosary was recited Sunday evening at the Davis-Hansen Funeral Chapel. Burial was in the Hills Ferry Cemetery. Baccala Gotard C 650325 p1 Final Rites for Gotard Baccala; Private funeral services were held Wednesday morning at Sacred Heart Church for Gotard Charles Baccala, 81, who died Sunday at his home on Loquat Avenue following a long illness. Baccala was a native of Switzerland and a long time resident of the Patterson Colony. He was a retired rancher. He is survived by four step-children: Elmer Mazzucchi of Patterson, Elizabeth Breschini of Soledad, Virginia Van Erp of Kentfield, and Arthur Mazzucchi of Stockton; and eight grandchildren. The Rosary was recited Tuesday evening at Evans Funeral Chapel. Benson Cecil 650603 p1 Cecil Benson Funeral held in Alabama; Funeral services were held Tuesday in Jasper, Alabama, for Cecil Benson who previously resided in Patterson. Mr. Benson, in his 40's, died of a heart attack last Thursday, May 27, in Florida. He was the son of Mrs. Ola Benson and the father of Devaire Benson, both of Patterson. Other Patterson relatives include Joseph, a brother, and sisters Mrs. Herb English, Mrs. Hugh Gartner, and Mrs. Thomas Russell. Another brother Ocie is in the service. Numerous local relatives traveled by air and auto to the funeral. Bishop Martha 651223 p1 Final Rites Today For Mrs. Martha Bishop; Funeral services will be conducted today, Wednesday, at 2 p.m. in Evans Funeral Chapel for Mrs. Martha Bishop, 92, who died late Sunday night in a local hospital. The service will be conducted by the Order of Eastern Star and interment will be in the Patterson District Cemetery. Mrs. Bishop was a long time resident of Patterson. She was a native of Michigan and arrived In Modesto on April 1, 1911. One year later she and her husband moved to the new community of Patterson. In 1920 they built the house in which Mrs. Bishop has continued to live until her recent illness. Mrs. Bishop is survived by one son, Arthur Bishop of Los Angeles. Mrs. Bishop is remembered by the long time residents of this community for her nursing work in the time before the town had a regular doctor and hospital She is also remembered by many as "Mrs. Santa Claus." Many years ago Mrs. Bishop became concerned that no one was doing anything for Patterson children at Christmas time. She solicited funds, bought toys and a Santa Clans suit, and organized a party, playing Santa Clans herself. She continued this program for many years. Mrs. Bishop also worked for the restoration of the local cemetery and for the local library. She has remained active in the Patterson. Garden Club. Each year, including 1965, she has attended the annual banquet of the Patterson-Westley Chamber of Commerce. She was greeted at a special celebration two years ago on the occasion of her 90th birthday. Bridgford H V Ms 650603 p1 Former Resident Dies in Bay City; Mrs. H. V. Bridgford, 86, former resident of Patterson died Saturday, May 29, in San Francisco where she. has lived since 1943. Mrs. Bridgford came to Patterson in 1919 and stayed until the death of her husband who operated a Grade A dairy here. She leaves two sisters, Nell Findley of San Francisco and Mrs Fred Palmer of Downey. Funeral services were held in San Francisco. Duran Teresa 651014 p1 Graveside Services Today; Graveside services will be conducted today, Thursday, at 11 a.m. in the Patterson District Cemetery for Teresa Duran, stillborn daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eduardo Rodriguez Duran of Westley. Father Edward Whooley will officiate and arrangements are being handled by Evans Funeral Chapel. In addition to her parents, Teresa is survived by three brothers and four sisters. Esteban Lozano M 650930 p1 Two Farm Workers Dead in Highway 33 Accident; Two farm workers died last Friday as a result of a car-pickup accident on Highway 33 about a mile and a half south of Patterson. Dead on arrival at the hospital was Lozano Medina Esteban, 47, of El Paso, Texas. He was living at the Rudy Avlia Labor Camp. He was a passenger in a car driven by Herrera Fidel Martinez, 26, of Mexico. Martinez died several hours after his arrival at the hospital. He lived in Vernalis and also worked for Rudy Avila. Their two passengers, Olga Elizando DeLimon, 23, of Crows Landing, and Juanita Acevedo, 37, of Crows Landing, were hospitalized following the accident. The four were farm workers and were returning from field work in the Westley area. Their southbound car was struck by a northbound pickup truck driven by Andrew Jackson Holidy, 41, of Patterson. The pickup swerved across the center line and struck the southbound car. Holidy is a bulldozer operator on the San Luis Dam project. He was hospitalized and released Saturday. Two charges of felony drunk driving and two charges of manslaughter in the driving of a vehicle are pending against Holiday. Funeral services were held Wednesday in El Paso for Estaban. He is survived by his wife, Josefina of El Paso. Final rites were also conducted Wednesday in San Luis, Sonora, Mexico for Martinez. He is survived by three sisters and three brothers in Mexico. Foote Fred R 651014 p1 Long Time El Solyo Ranch Employee Dies; Funeral services were conducted Monday at Evans Funeral Chapel for Fred Raymond Foote, 70, who died early Friday in a Modesto hospital following a short illness. Mr. Foote had been employed at the El Solyo Ranch near Vernalis for 30 years. He was a native of Oklahoma and was retired. He is survived by his wife, Lila Foote of Westley; one son, Fred Foote of Westley; five brothers, Wilbur of San Diego, Charlie of Baldwin Park, Frank of Modesto, Ralph of Ceres, and Chester of Tuolumne; and three sisters, Mrs. Mabel Champ of Hughson, Mrs. Blanche Mount of Pacific Grove, and Mrs. Lucy Borden of Dos Palos. A native of Minnesota, Franke had resided in Patterson one year. He was a retired butcher and a veteran of World War I. Freitas Joseph 650325 p1 Death Takes Joseph Freitas; Joseph Freitas of Oakland, a widely known member of the Portuguese community in California, and a frequent Patterson visitor, died suddenly Tuesday evening in Gustine at a meeting of a Portuguese organization. Funeral services will be conducted from the East Lawn Mortuary in Oakland. French Nellie 650204 p1 Death Claims Former Teacher; Word was received this week of the November 15 death of Miss Nellie French of Buena Park, a former Patterson resident. Miss French had been a wheel chair patient for the past two years. At the time of her death, she was in a convalescent home in Buena Park. She came to Patterson in 1937 and taught at the Las Palmas Elementary School. In 1945 she moved to Southern California. While in Patterson she was active in Patterson Chapter No. 417, Order of Eastern Star, and was Worthy Matron of the local chapter in 1945. She had been an OES member since 1904. She is a past organist of the Federated Church in Patterson. Gehri Myrle 650520 p1 Funeral Services Held For Mrs. Myrle Gehri; Graveside services were held Wednesday at Patterson District Cemetery for Mrs. Myrle Gehri, 66, who died Monday in a Stockton hospital following a short illness. Mrs. Gehri lived In San Antone Valley about 25 miles west of Patterson in Santa Clara County. She was a native of California and had lived in San Antoine Valley 50 years. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Alyce Williams of Linden; and two sons, Fred William Gehri of Livermore and Norman Gehri of Monterey; three sisters, Edna Seyden and Vaida Corona, both of Turlock and Alma Barkley of Oakland; and five grandchildren. Mrs. Keechler was a native of Napa and had lived in Hollister 65 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold, a retired rancher, in 1961. Lee; Funeral services were conducted in Evans Funeral Chapel on Saturday morning for Albert Ivan Lee, 45, of Patterson whose body was found in the San Joaquin River last Thursday morning. Lee arrived Wednesday, October 6, at the Stanislaus County Road Camp Mobile Unit at Laird Park to serve 105 days. He was reported missing at the camp at 4 a.m. last Thursday and was found two and one half hours later floating in the river which is near the camp. He was found by another inmate. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Amanda Lee of Patterson; a brother, Charles Allan Lee of Sacramento; and two sisters, Mrs. Louise Watson of Manteca and Mrs. Dixie Reichmuth of Patterson. Lichty Reginald R 650211 p1 Reginald Lichty Dies Suddenly of Heart Attack; Word was received here this week of the death of Reginald T. Lichty, former superintendent of the Patterson Union High School district from 1947-50. Lichty, 55, died of a heart attack in Placerville last Saturday. He and his wife Evelyn had spent the night there with friends in that community and apparently died in his sleep. At the time of his death Mr. Lichty was assistant superintendent of Monterey Public Schools, a position he had held since 1961. Although death was apparently caused by a heart attack, friends said they knew of no history of a heart condition and his sudden death shocked all who knew him. In addition to his widow, Lichty is survived by his son Fritz, a student at the University of California. He began his teaching career in about 1938 at the McClatchy High School in Sacramento. He taught for five years in the elementary grades, five in high school, and served as principal of both elementary and junior high schools, as well as the high school level. Besides serving as superintendent here he had served as principal at El Dorado High School in Placerville. He had also been superintendent of Plumas Unified School District at Quincy. Mr Lichty was a member of the Monterey Rotary club at the time of his death. The funeral was held Tuesday at the Mission Mortuary in Monterey. He served as city councilman from 1922 to 1935. He was chief of the early day Patterson Volunteer Fire Department and later served as first assistant chief of the reorganized Patterson Fire Department. He and W. L. Martinez Herrera F 650930 p1 Two Farm Workers Dead in Highway 33 Accident Herrera Fidel Martinez; Two farm workers died last Friday as a result of a car-pickup accident on Highway 33 about a mile and a half south of Patterson. Dead on arrival at the hospital was Lozano Medina Esteban, 47, of El Paso, Texas. He was living at the Rudy Avlia Labor Camp. He was a passenger in a car driven by Herrera Fidel Martinez, 26, of Mexico. Martinez died several hours after his arrival at the hospital. He lived in Vernalis and also worked for Rudy Avila. Their two passengers, Olga Elizando DeLimon, 23, of Crows Landing, and Juanita Acevedo, 37, of Crows Landing, were hospitalized following the accident. The four were farm workers and were returning from field work in the Westley area. Their southbound car was struck by a northbound pickup truck driven by Andrew Jackson Holidy, 41, of Patterson. The pickup swerved across the center line and struck the southbound car. Holidy is a bulldozer operator on the San Luis Dam project. He was hospitalized and released Saturday. Two charges of felony drunk driving and two charges of manslaughter in the driving of a vehicle are pending against Holiday. Funeral services were held Wednesday in El Paso for Estaban. He is survived by his wife, Josefina of El Paso. Final rites were also conducted Wednesday in San Luis, Sonora, Mexico for Martinez. He is survived by three sisters and three brothers in Mexico. At least two other Americans were also killed in the explosion which took the loves of eight persons. Peterson was a naive of Kansas and moved to Patterson with his family in 1920. He graduated from Patterson High School in 1926 and has been a frequent visitor here. He was a long time employee of Bechtel Construction Company and was working at the Oasis Oil Company s Samah field about 300 miles south of Tripoli. He is survived by his wife, Mary Peterson of Piedmont; a sister, Arlene Harris of San Rafael; and a brother, Wendell Peterson of Palo Alto. The remains will be cremated and inurnment will be in the Patterson District Cemetery. Peterson Gustav H 650415 p1 Final Rites Held For Gus Peterson; Final rites were held Wednesday at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Patterson for Gustav H. Peterson, 86, who died in a local hospital early Monday following a long illness. The Rev. Franklin Satterberg of Patterson and the Rev. Edwin Solie, a former Patterson pastor, officiated at the services. Mr. Peterson was born in Smaland, Sweden, on March 2,1878. In 1901, he came to America, residing in Enterprise, Kansas, where he met and married Minnie Anderson on November 14, 1906. To this union were born four children; one of the daughters, pauline, died in infancy. The Petersons moved to Patterson in 1929 where Mr. Peterson was engaged in the retail grocery business until his retirement. He was a charter member of the Patterson Rotary Club and a charter director of the Del Puerto Hospital, a position which he held until his resignation last January. He was well known for his interest and work in the Boy Scouts and held the Sliver Beaver Award. He had been honored with a life membership in the Parent Teachers Association for his community service and was an active Gideon for many years. As an active member of many years in the Covenant Church, he had served as Sunday School teacher and Superintendent, Church deacon and trustee, and was a Deacon Emeritus at the time of his death. He is survived by two sons, Bernard of Piedmont, Wendell of Palo Alto, and one daughter, Arlene Harris of San Rafael, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. The boy died last Friday apparently from suffocation caused by an almond lodged it his wind pipe. He was a retired manager of the bank that is now the First Western Bank and had a long career of civil service. He was a charter member of the Patterson Rotary club and a past master of Patterson Lodge 488 F&AM. He was a past president of the Patterson-Westley Chamber of Commerce and was the first president of and served 13 years on the board of the Patterson-Westley Community Chest. He served 16 years as city treasurer and 12 years on the Patterson Planning Commission. He also served on the local council of the Boy Scouts of America. He is survived by his wife, Alice of Patterson; two daughters Mrs Janet Peterson of Modesto and Mrs. Joyce Oakley of Patterson; one son Franklin Roberts Jr. of Sacramento; and six grandchildren. The two car collision occurred at the intersection of Orange and Elm Avenues about two miles east of Patterson. According to highway patrol officers, Stewart said he was westbound on Orange and had stopped at the stop sign at Elm. He said he waited for a northbound car on Elm to pass and then pulled onto Elm. He said he did not see the other vehicle approaching. Stewart suffered minor injuries. 18 month old Michael was taken to Del Puerto Hospital in critical condition suffering from head injuries and a fractured leg. Three year old Steven was in serious condition at the hospital with a broken right leg and severe head lacerations. All the Stewarts were thrown from their car. The driver of the other vehicle, Charles Gustafson, 18, of Patterson, was returning from classes at Modesto Junior College. He received cuts and bruises and has since been released from the hospital. Wheatly Harvey 650805 p1 Laborer Drowns in River; A farm laborer from the Gustine Labor Camp drowned in the San Joaquin River early Tuesday morning. The body of Harvey Wheatly, 44, was recovered by sheriffs officers using grappling hooks about 11:15 a.m. Tuesday. Wheatley and four companions had spent the day near the river on the Tony Gill property, fishing, swimming and drinking. They built a campfire during the evening and prepared to sleep there. About 2:30 a.m. his companions were awakened by Wheatley who told them he was going for another swim, according to the sheriffs office report. When he did not return from the swim, one of tie companions walked to the Patterson Water District pumping station and notified Pete Brunoni, station attendant, who called the sheriff. Wheatley had been at the labor camp two months moving here from Stockton. He was a veteran of World War II and is survived by a half sister, Mrs. C. Rogers of Kansas City. Zacharias Ralph H 650722 p1 86-year Resident Ralph Zacharias, Dies; Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning at Evans Funeral Chapel for Ralph H. Zacharias, 86, a lifetime resident of the West Side. The Rev. Charles Silberstein officiated with interment in the Modesto Citizens Cemetery. Mr. Zacharias died early last Friday in a Ceres hospital. He had been hospitalized since June 19 when he suffered a fractured hip in a fall at his home on the Zacharias ranch west of Patterson. Ralph Zacharias was born on the original 160 acre ranch west of Patterson. He was the grandson of Charles Zacharias who homesteaded much land in this area in the 1860's. He graduated from the first elementary school in this area, the Haight Grammar School. He attended the Tamalpais Military Academy in Marin County and graduated from Modesto High School in 1900. Alter his father died, Zacharias managed the ranch and in 1911 formed the Charles Zacharias Corporation. He was president of the corporation at the time of his death. He was a director of the West Stanislaus Irrigation District 43 years since it was organized. He was a charter director of the West Stanislaus County Fire Protection District and was the chairman of the district since 1934. He was also a longtime member of the Stanislaus County Democratic Central Committee. He became a member of the committee in the early 1940 s and remained until 1962. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Z. Bubka of Patterson and Mrs. Enid Z. Mason of Dobbs Ferry, New York; one brother, Chester Zacharias of Patterson; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
