Lou Allison Found Dead; Funeral services are pending at Evans Funeral Chapel for Lou Allison, 52, who was found dead
in his residence on Marshall Road Tuesday evening. Allison was a native of Reno and had lived here 16 years.  He was
an accountant and had been office manager at the Arredondo Labor Camp since 1951. He leaves no relatives.

Final Rites For Lou Allison; Funeral services were conducted Saturday morning in Evans Funeral Chapel for Lou
Allison, 52, who died Tuesday, November 8.  Interment was in the Patterson District Cemetery. The rosary was recited
last Friday evening in the chapel. Allison was a native of Reno and had lived here for 16 years.  He had been office
manager at the Arredondo Labor Camp since 1951. He leaves no relatives.

Final Rites For Norman Allport; Private funeral services were conducted Tuesday in Evans Funeral Chapel for Norman
Eastham Allport, 76, of Westley.  Allport died Saturday in a local hospital following a long illness.  Interment was in the
Patterson District Cemetery. He was a native of New Zealand and had lived in Westley for 45 years.  He was a retired
chief pumper for the West Stanislaus Irrigation District. He is survived by his widow, Mary Jane Allport of Westley; one
son, Daryl Allport of Beaumont, Texas; and a daughter, Vera I. Franklin of Redwood City. The family has requested that
any remembrances be given to the heart fund.

Services for Mrs. G. Arredondo Are Thursday; Requiem mass will be said at 10:30 a.m. today, Thursday, at Sacred Heart
Catholic Church for Mrs. Gertrude Arredondo, 81.  She died Monday night in the Del Puerto Hospital after a long illness.
Committal will be at 2 p.m. in the Dos Palos Cemetery.  Rosary was recited Wednesday evening at the Evans Funeral
Chapel.
Mrs. Arredondo had lived in this area since 1945.  She was a native of San Juan, Arizona. She is survived by four sons,
Dave Arredondo and Ross Figueroa of Patterson, Alex Arredondo of Ceres and John Figueroa of Escalon; two daughters,
Mrs. Cruz Ruiz of Merced and Mrs. Mary Augustine of Los Banos; two brothers, Joe Portillo of Delhi and Richard
Portillo of Los Angeles; one sister, Mrs. Hellen Cervanties of Los Angeles; 13 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

Baker Funeral Wednesday; Final rites were conducted Wednesday afternoon in Evans Funeral Chapel for Mrs. Lillian
Tripp Baker, 94, who died Monday in a Modesto rest home.  Interment was in the Patterson District Cemetery. Mrs.
Baker was a native of Massachusetts and had lived 40 years in this area. She is survived by one son Harold Tripp of
Patterson and one daughter, Mrs. Mildred Greeno of Livermore.

Final Rites For Mrs. Becker; Final rites will be conducted at 10 a.m. today, Thurs., in Evans Funeral Chapel for Mrs.
Lillian Alexandria Becker, 81, who died Monday in a local hospital. The rosary was recited Wednesday evening at the
chapel.  Interment will be in Fort Howard Cemetery in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Mrs. Becker was a native of Green Bay.
She had lived in Patterson the past four years. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Irene Betry of Patterson, Mrs.
Kathleen Stonecipher of Alameda and Mrs. Mary Jane Alexander of San Jose; three sons, Everett Becker of Niagara
Falls, New York, Donald Becker, of Greenbay, Earl Becker of Sacramento; a sister, Mrs. Bill Morris of South Dakota; a
brother, William Ormsby of Illinois, 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Final Rites, Tuesday For Mrs. Benson; Final rites were conducted Tuesday afternoon in Evans Funeral Chapel for Mrs.
Emma Adina Benson, 82, who died last Friday in a local hospital following a long illness. Interment was in the Patterson
District Cemetery. Mrs. Benson was a native of Minneapolis, Minnesota.  She lived in Patterson 54 years and taught in
the Patterson Elementary School system for 17 years. She is survived by a niece, Mrs. Laurence Baalack of Patterson; a
nephew, Phillip Larson of Pacific Grove; two step-daughters, Mrs. Marguerite Sorenson of Patterson and Mrs. Alice
Jordan of Modesto; three stepsons, Harvey of Modesto; William of Laguna Hills, and Ray Benson of San Mateo.

Service Today stillborn Bernal daughter; Graveside services will be conducted at 10 am. today, Thursday, at Patterson
District Cemetery for the stillborn daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carlos Bernal of Vernalis. The child was stillborn Tuesday.
Evans Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Accident Takes One Life; A Manteca man, Earl J. Bowling, 58, died in a local hospital last Friday following an auto
accident the previous Wednesday morning on River Road, about one and a half miles west of Crows Landing Road. He
told the highway patrol that his truck's steering mechanism apparently locked causing him to go off the road and hit a
utility pole.

Manuel T. Brown Funeral Service Held Monday; Requiem mass was said Monday morning in Sacred Heart Catholic
Church for Manuel T. Brown, 70, who died last Thursday in a local hospital following a long illness. The rosary was
recited Sunday evening in Evans Funeral Chapel and interment was in the Patterson District Cemetery. Brown was a
native of the Azores.  He lived in Patterson 48 years and was a member of the UPEC and IDES. He is survived by his
wife, Hazel of Patterson; four sons, George of San Diego, Albert of San Pablo, Manuel Jr. and Leonard of Patterson; one
daughter, Madeline Brown of Patterson; and two brothers, Frank P. Cardoza of Lemoore and Joe P. Cardoza of San Luis
Obispo.

Final Rites for Mrs. Bullock; Funeral services were conducted Tuesday in Danville for Mrs. Raymond Bullock who died
last Saturday in a rest home in Danville. Mrs. Bullock was a sister of Dan Houtchens and Mrs. Otis Jones, both at
Patterson. She is survived by one daughter, two grandchildren, two brothers and four sisters.

Marlar Campbell Services Held Wednesday; James Marlar Campbell, 72, of Patterson was buried Wednesday in the
Lakewood Memorial Park in Empire.  He died suddenly Saturday at his N. Third St. home. Services were conducted
Wednesday morning at the Federated Church by Rev. Charles Silberstein.  The Evans Funeral Chapel was in charge of
the burial arrangements. Mr. Campbell was a native Californian and had lived in the Patterson area since 1931.  Hie was a
member of the Farm Bureau and was an officer in tho Federated Church. Surviving are a son, M. Chattin Campbell, and
four grandchildren of Modesto, and a sister, Mrs. Jennie Beecher of Washington.

Final Rites Friday for Antonio Carias; A rosary was recited last Thursday night in the Davis-Hansen Funeral Chapel in
Newman for Antonio Carias, 70, who died November 23 in a Modesto hospital after an extended illness. A requiem mass
was said Friday at the St. Joachim's Catholic Church. Interment was at the Hills Ferry Cemetery. He was a native of
Portugal and had lived in the west side area 46 years.  He had been a member of the United National Life, a Portuguese
order, of Delhi.  He had been a dairyman. He leaves his widow, Lucinda; two brothers, Joseph of New Jersey and Edward
Caries of Portugal, and two sisters of Portugal.

Former Resident Will Be Buried This Saturday; Funeral services for John Howe Carver, ?8, a former resident of
Patterson, will be conducted in San Francisco this Saturday, March 5.  The services will be conducted at Halstead's,
Funeral Chapel, 1123 Sutter in San Francisco at 2 p.m. Carver died March 1 in Modesto.  He is survived by one sister,
Mrs. C. W. Hale of Patterson, and a brother, Gail B. Carver of San Francisco.

Final Rites Held Wednesday For Mrs. Cawthon; Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at the Franklin & Downs
funeral chapel in Modesto for Mrs. Irene Lavon Cawthon, 55, who died Sunday in a Modesto hospital following an
apparent heart attack. The Rev. Charles Silberstein of the Patterson Federated Church conducted the service and
interment was in Turlock Memorial Park. Mrs. Cawthon was a native of Ronson, Kansas, and had lived in Patterson five
and a half years.  She was office manager at Del Puerto Hospital.  Before coming to Patterson she worked in the Newman
Post Office. She was a member of the Methodist Church and the Newman Rebekah Lodge. She is survived by a son, M.
Sgt. H. E. Cawthon of Montana; a sister, Carol Ashmun of Hughson; a brother, Glenn Booth of Modesto; and three
grandchildren of Montana.

Requiem Mass Saturday for Thomas Del Nero; Requiem mass was said last Saturday in the St. Joachims Catholic Church
in Newman for Thomas C. Del Nero, 66,of Crows Landing who died September 14 in a Modesto hospital after an
extended illness. The rosary was recited Friday evening in Davis-Hansen Funeral Chapel and interment was in Hills Ferry
Cemetery. A native of Italy, he had been a dairyman in this area until retiring.  He had lived in the Crows Landing area
about 57 years. He leaves three sisters, Mrs. Lillian Palmer of San Jose, Mrs. Mae Forsyth of Turlock and Mrs. Mary
Costa of Patterson, and two brothers, George and William Del Nero, both of Turlock.

Two Dead, Five Injured In Sunday Accidents; Two young women were injured Sunday when the pickup in which they
were passengers went out of control, overturned, and pinned them inside for about half an hour. The accident took place
at Highway 33 and Sequoia Avenue near the Patterson District Cemetery.  Driver of the pickup was James J. Neave, 40,
of Concord.  His passengers were his daughters, Shirley Neave, 18, and Mrs. Nancy Evans, 19, also of Concord. Neave
told the Highway patrol he was northbound on Highway 33 and had to pull onto the shoulder when a southbound car
pulled into his lane to pass another vehicle.  He said he lost control of the truck which went into a broadside skid and
overturned.  He was tossed from the vehicle. The Westley and Patterson Fire Departments were called to the scene to
assist. This accident led to another in which two persons were killed, California Highway Patrolman George H. Retz, 45,
of Modesto was enroute to the above accident with red light, siren and headlights turned on.  A car driven by George
Washington Fields, 55, of Modesto and carrying three passengers made a U-turn into the patrol cars path. Fields and one
passenger were killed.  The other two passengers and the patrolman were also injured. This accident took place on Crows
Landing Road near Taylor Road.

Funeral Services This Friday For Mrs. Douty; Funeral services will be conducted Friday, February 18, at 2 p.m. in Evans
Funeral Chapel for Mrs. Katheryn Elizabeth Douty, 82, who died Monday in a Modesto hospital.The. services will be
conducted by Rev. Charles Silberstein of the Federated Church and interment will be in the Patterson District Cemetery.
Mrs. Douty was a native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and had lived in Stanislaus County 51 years.  She was a long-time
Patterson resident.  She was the widow of Frank Douty who was manager for many years of the commercial Bank of
Patterson. Mrs. Douty is survived by one brother, Merlin Patterson, of Minneapolis.

Pedro Duran Services Held; Funeral services were conducted last Saturday morning at Sacred Heart Catholic, Church for
Pedro Duran, 70, who died March 3, in a Modesto hospital following an extended illness. Interment was in the Patterson
District Cemetery. Duran was a native of Mexico and had lived in Westley for 24 years.  He was a retired restaurant
operator there. He is survived by nine children, 32 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were
handled by Evans Funeral Chapel.

Final Riles Conducted For Willis Edmiston; Funeral services were conducted in Modesto Monday for Willis N.
Edmiston, 66, of Westley who died last Friday in a local hospital following, a long illness. The final rites were
conducted. by the Patterson Masonic Lodge in conjunction with a Christian Science service read by Mrs. Gladys Hunt of
Newman.  Interment was in the Patterson District Cemetery. Edmiston was a native of California.  He had ranched in the
Westley area for 12 years.  He was a member of the Patterson Masonic Lodge 488, the Scottish Rites Bodies of Stockton,
and Aahmes Shrine Temple of Oakland. He is survived by his wife, Ann Catherine Edmiston of Westley.

Final Rites Tuesday for Vivian J. Fant ; Funeral services were conducted Tuesday in Evans Funeral Chapel for Mr.
Vivian James Fant, 61, who died Saturday in a local hospital following a long illness. Interment was in the Patterson
District Cemetery. Fant was a native of Texas.  He had lived in Patterson. the past 20 years. He is survived by his widow,
Ruby of Patterson; a daughter, Doris Rich of Stockton; two brothers; Sam of Westley and Vain Fant of Arkansas; three
sisters, Mrs. Ruth Frick and Mrs. Rose Jones both of Arkansas and Mrs. Myra Fritzell of Washington; and three
grandchildren.

Filippini Rites were Tuesday; Requiem Mass was conducted Tuesday morning in Sacred Heart Catholic church here for
Lloyd "Ki" Filippini, 62, of Crows Landing who died last Friday at his home. The rosary was recited Monday evening at
the Davis-Hansen Funeral Chapel in Newman and interment was in the Hills Ferry Cemetery. Filippini was a native of
Olema, California, and had been a member of the Crows Landing community for 60 years, he was a wholesale butcher for
40 years and a member of the Crows Landing Fire Department. He is survived by his widow, Josephine Filippini of
Crows Landing; one daughter, Lloydene Filippini of Crows Landing; three sisters, Mrs. Florence Hendy of Newman,
Mrs. Charlotte Vroman of Los Angeles, and Mrs. Lillian Hornbostel of Sacramento; three brothers, Walter of Patterson,
Charles of Crows Landing and William of Newman.

Final Rites For Publisher R. C. Fleharty; Rolland C. Fleharty, 72, a former publisher of the IRRIGATOR, died of an
apparent heart attack Monday on a golf course in Walnut Creek. Family services are being arranged in Walnut Creek.
Fleharty was a native of Boise, Idaho.  He attended schools in Newman where his father was the owner of the WEST
SIDE INDEX, the Newman newspaper. He purchased the Patterson IRRIGATOR July 1,1919, from Elwyn Hoffman.  He
continued as publisher until October 1, 1947 when he sold the paper to Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Jessen of Turlock.  Robert S.
Jones was editor and manager for the Jessens. Alter selling the IRRIGATOR, the Flehartys retired and moved to the Bay
Area.  Their home is now in Walnut Creek. He was secretary-treasure of the Patterson-Westley Chamber of Commerce
during his 28 years here and was proud of the fact that he did not miss a meeting.  He was a charter member and past
president of the Patterson Rotary Club. He is survived by his widow, Ethel of Walnut Creek; two sons, William of Red
Bluff and George of Atherton; and eight grandchildren. George is a former mayor of the City of Redding and William is a
former mayor of the City of Bed Bluff. The family has requested that any remembrances be sent to KIM Chapter,
Children's Home society, 45 Windsor Avenue, Kensington.

Funeral Services Conducted For Mrs D. Flores; Requiem mass was celebrated in Sacred Heart Catholic Church
Wednesday for Dominga R. Flores, 49, who died Sunday in a Modesto hospital following a short illness. The rosary was
recited Tuesday evening at the church and burial was in the Patterson District Cemetery. Evans Funeral Chapel was in
charge of arrangements. Mrs. Flores was a native of Texas and had lived in California for six years. She is survived by
her husband, Elijio Flores, who resides at the Arredondo Camp; eight sons one daughter, three sisters, and three brothers.

Funeral Service Held Wednesday for Henry Franke; Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at Evans Funeral
Chapel for Henry Herman Franke, 85, who died Sunday evening in a Salida rest home. Franke was a retired carpenter.
He was born in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, and had lived in Patterson 40 years. He is survived by one son, Wesley Franke of
Patterson.  Interment was in the Patterson District Cemetery with Rev. Charles Silberstein conducting the service.

Wesley R. Franke Funeral Today; Final rites will be conducted at 10 a.m. today, Thurs., for Wesley R. Franke, 53, who
died Monday in a sanitarium in Salida following a long illness. The services will be conducted at Evans Funeral Chapel
with the Rev. C.A. Silberstein officiating, Interment will be in the Patterson District Cemetery. Franke was a native of
North Dakota and had lived here for 35 years.  He was formerly a carpenter.

Final Rites Conducted For William Friedrich; Requiem Mass was conducted Tuesday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church
for William Godfrey Friedrich, 73, of Vernalis who died shortly after arrival at a local hospital last Saturday.  Death was
apparently caused by a heart attack. The Rosary was recited Monday evening at Evans Funeral Chapel and interment
Tuesday was in the Patterson District Cemetery. Friedrich was a native of Oxnard.  He had ranched on Welty Road near
Vernalis for the past 28 years. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Earl Archer of Vernalis, and three sons, Robert of
Hidden Hills, Calabasas, George of Westley, and James with the armed forces in Alaska.

Frank Gallardo, Labor Contractor, Dies June 10th; Requiem mass was celebrated last Tuesday in the Sacred Heart Church
in Turlock for Francisco ( Frank ), Gallardo, 61, who died last Friday night in a local hospital following a short illness.
The rosary was recited Monday evening at the Norton Mortuary in Turlock.  Interment was in the Turlock Memorial
Park:  Gallardo operated a farm labor business in the Patterson area and also in Imperial County. He had been in business
here the past 40 years.  He became ill two days before his death. He was a native of Mexico and had lived in the Turlock
area since be was six years old. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Turlock and president of the Guadalupe
Society of the Sacred Heart church in Patterson.  He was also a member of the Turlock Knights of Columbus and the
Guadalupe society of Turlock. He is survived by his widow Ermelinda of Turlock; three daughters, Ramona Romero,
Jessie Orosco and Olivia Gallardo, all of Turlock; three brothers; Domingo of Los Angeles an Pedro and John, both of
Turlock; three sisters, Delfina and Sofia Gallardo, both of Turlock an Victoria Martinez of Brawley and nine
grandchildren.

Former Resident Buried Wednesday; A rosary was recited Tuesday for Mrs. Maria Rosa Gamma, 90, who died
November 20 in Modesto after a short illness.  Requiem mass was said at St. Stanislaus Church Wednesday with
interment at St.  Stanislaus Cemetery.  Franklin and Downs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. A native of
Switzerland, she had lived in the area since 1912 and lived in Patterson until 1950 before moving to Modesto. She leaves
her son, John Gamma of Georgia, three daughters; Carolyn Bonadiman of Arcadia, Mary Ann Stenker of Modesto, and
Anita Nerland of Washington; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The family invites friends to send
spiritual bouquets.

Funeral Service Saturday for Harry Germolus; Funeral services were conducted Saturday at Evans Funeral Chapel for
Harry B. Germolus, 40, who died Wednesday, June 15, in a local hospital.  He had been ill about two months. Interment
was in the Patterson District Cemetery. Germolus was a native of Patterson and was employed by the Golden Valley
Creamery in Newman.  He was a member of Garborg Lodge, Suns of Norway. He is survived by five sons, Sam, Mike,
Leon and Chuck, all of Patterson, and Rick with the Coast Guard in Alameda; one daughter, Terry of Patterson; his
father, Sam Germolus of Patterson; one brother, Rodney of Patterson; six sisters, Ella Swanson of Patterson, Elma Martin
of Willits, Mabel Leffler of Stockton, Myrtle Clark of Berkeley, Ruby Stevens and Della Germolus, both of Oakland; and
one grandchild.

Henry Gilliam Final Rites; Charles Henry Gllliam, 38, of Modesto was pronounced dead on arrival at the county hospital
last Thursday night after being shot. in the chest in his home eight miles south of Modesto. Gllliam had been employed at
Bessey Motor Company in Patterson the past 10 years.  His Wife, Velma, 33, has been charged with involuntary
manslaughter.  The couple hart been married 11 years and had lived three years at their present address. Final rites will be
conducted at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Franklin and Downs Funeral Horns, 12th and G Streets, in Modesto. In addition to
his wife, Gilliam is survived by two sons, Charles Jr:, and John; one daughter, Diana, all of Modesto; four brothers and
one sister.  He was a, native of Texas. The Bessey Motor Company gaurage will be closed Friday from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Final Rites Held For Tyner Glotfelty; Final rites were conducted last Saturday for Henry Tyner Glotfelty, 80, who died
October 5 in a local hospital after a short illness. Evans Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.  Services were
conducted by Rev. C. A. Silberstein at the Federated Church with cremation at the Park View Cemetery in Manteca. He
leaves his widow, Mrs. Ruby Glotfelty, who is in a Ceres rest home; a daughter, Nina C. Hahm of San Carlos, and a
brother, Lester Glotfelty of Patterson. Glotfelty was a member of the Patterson Methodist Church since 1919 and was a
trustee and adult class Sunday school teacher for many years in the Federated Church.  He served in a California-Nevada
Methodist Conference committee on Federated churches.

Final Riles Saturday For Mrs. Glotfelty; Final rites were conducted Saturday in the Federated Church for Mrs. Ruby
Glotfelty, 79, who died October 12 in a Ceres rest home. Rev. C.A. Silberstein officiated at the service.  Interment was at
Parkview Crematorium in Manteca.  Evans Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements. A native of Illinois, Mrs.
Glotfelty had lived in Patterson 47 years.  She was an active member of the Women's United Society of the Federated
Church and a charter member of Patterson Study Club. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Nina C. Hahm of San Carlos,
her husband, Tyner Glotfelty, preceded her in death one week.

Crash Kills Local Woman; Final rites were conducted Tuesday in Evans Funeral Chapel for Mrs. Mary Teresa Gonzales,
31, who was fatally injured in an auto accident last Thursday night.  The accident occurred at the intersection of

years; she was a native of California. She is survived by her husband, Richard; one son, Ralph; three daughters, Cristina,
Monica, and Teresa; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alejandro Reza of Patterson; five brothers, Armando Reza, Manuel Reza,
Leonard Reza, Johnnie Reza, and Michael Reza, all of Patterson; six sisters, Louisa and Connie Gonzales and Alejandria
Reza, all of Patterson, Amelia  Reza, Carmen Reza, and Bertha Reza, all of Hollywood. Mrs. Gonzales was dead on
arrival at Del Puerto Hospital following the auto accident.  She was a passenger in a car driven by her sister, Alejandrina
Reza, 22, of Patterson.  Their car was struck by a pickup truck driven by William Mealey, 29, of Modesto.  Mealey is a
field superintendent for Western Contracting Co.
The CHP said Mealey ran a stop sign and rammed into the Reza car. Miss Reza suffered head injuries and lacerations.
She was taken to the county hospital.  Mealey suffered a head injury and scalp laceration and was taken to Doctors
Hospital in Modesto.

PadiIla Gutierrez, 42, of Crows Landing who died at his home April 18. The Rosary was recited on Thursday evening at
Evans Funeral Chapel.  Interment was in the Patterson District Cemetery. Gutierrez was a fisherman and had been is this
area about two weeks. He is survived by four sisters and five brothers.

Services Set Friday For Grace Harrison; Services will be held Friday for Grace Virgo Harrison, 84, who died Tuesday in
a local hospital. Mrs. Harrison had been ill about six weeks. Rev. Arthur Olson will officiate at services to be held at the
Evans Funeral Chapel at 10 a.m. Friday. Interment will be in Hills Ferry Cemetery at Newman. Mrs. Harrison was a
native of the Gustine area.  She came to Patterson in 1915.  'The family moved to Oakland in 1933 and returned here in
1951.  Her husband, the late Percy Harrison, was a Southern Pacific agent here.  He died in 1952. Mrs. Harrison was a
life member of the Order of Eastern Star.  She was affiliated with the Santa Nella Chapter in 1909 and was first worthy
matron of the Patterson chapter in 1923.  She was a past deputy grand matron of the organization and a past president of
the Areme Club.  She was also a past deputy president of Romero Rebecca Lodge in Gustine. Survivors include Alfred H.
Harrison and two Grandchildren, of Patterson, and a sister, Mrs. Bertha Ewing of Gustine.

10-Year-Old Girl Drowned At Laird Slough; A 10-year-old girl, Lupe Marcoff Heredia, drowned in Laird Slough last
Sunday.  Her body was discovered early Tuesday morning not far from where she had entered the water.  She was the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Simon Heredia of 459 Eureka Street. Lupe was on an outing at the park with five other girls,
accompanied by two VISTA domestic Peace Corps trainees, Donna West, 21, of Dallas, Texas; and Deborah Brewster,
20, of New York.  Two other girls who had entered the water with Lupe were rescued by a Santa Clara boy who was
camping nearby with his father.
Mrs. Donato Lopez, the girl's aunt, told the IRRIGATOR that she spotted the body early Tuesday morning and went to
the Laird Park Road Camp to phone for help. Mrs. Lopez' husband and cousin were with her at the time, she said. Rita
Heredia, 17, sister of the 10-year-old girl, was injured a short while after the drowning when her car went out of control
and overturned on River Road near Hamilton Road.  She and Nelly Lopez, 21, were enroute to the drowning scene. The
accident was discovered by Simon Heredia, also on his way to the scene of the drowning. Heredia said that he, his family
and friends continued to search through the nights with the aid of floodlights loaned by the Sheriffs Department  He said
he was especially indebted to his sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Donato Lopez and sons, to Jesus Ochoa of Newman and
Tony Granillo of Patterson, and several other boys for their help in searching for the body. The rosary was recited
Wednesday evening in Evans Funeral Chapel for Lupe Heredia.  Requiem mass will be said at 10:30 a.m. today,
Thursday, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church.  Interment will be in the Patterson District Cemetery. Lupe had lived
hereabout three years.  She was a native of Arizona.  In addition to her parents, she is survived by a sister, Rita, and four
brothers, Arthur, Simon, Jr., Johnny and Anthony, all of Patterson.

One Kill ln Highway Accident; Vernon C. "Blackie" Herrera 48, of the Julian Lopez Labor Camp was killed last Sunday
evening when he was struck by a car while walling to Patterson with two companions. His companions said they warned
him about the oncoming vehicle which was driven by William J. Druml, 28, of Gustine, but Herrera kept walking into the
car's path.  The impact carried him about 70 feet.  He was pronounced dead on arrival at Del Puerto Hospital. The body
was taken to Evans Funeral Chapel and later transferred to Lawndale funeral services.  He is survived by a sister,
Elizabeth J. Romero of Lawndale.

Deer Hunter-Shoots Son; Funeral services will be conducted to Murray, Utah, for Ronald LeRoy Kinder, 18, of Now man
who was shot in the head by his father white deer hunting in Del Puerto Canyon last Sunday. The boy's father, Alma
Kinder, Sr., told officers he thought his son was hunting some distance away when he saw what he thought was a deer
emerge from behind a tree.  The bullet struck young Kinder in the head. The accident occurred on a hill on the Murray
Hill property near the Stanislaus County Road Camp. The boy was wearing a red striped shirt but no hunting hat.  The
accident was investigated by Sheriff's sergeant Robert Field and State Game Warden Jerry Warden. The father said he
had been hunting for 26 years. Ronald Kinder was a native of Salt Lake City.  He was employed by a Modesto poultry
firm.  He is survived by his wife, Vicki, of Newman; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alma Kinder, Sr.; three brothers, Alma Jr.
and Kebin both of s Newman, and Larry of Murray, Utah, and three sisters, Karen, Pamela and Katherine of Newman.

Dittman of Sonora, Mrs. Johanna Odenbaugh of Fresno and Mrs. Trina Martin of Santa Maria. He was preceded in death

Mt. Fuji Crash Kills Investor in FM Station: John J Markovich; The British jetliner crash on Mt. Fuji in Japan last
weekend took the life of a Modesto man who was one of the principle investors in the radio station scheduled to operate
from the West Side. John J. Markovich and his wife both perished in the crash that took the lives of 124 persons, 89 of
them Americans.  He was a vice president of the Utility trailer Sales Co. of Fresno owned by his father, and was manager
of the firm's Modesto office. Markovich was one of several investors who formed the corporation which intends to move
the Turlock FM radio station to the Patterson area.  He was slated to play a  major part in the operation and management
of the station.

Jr., 13, who was killed Saturday in an automobile crash.  Requiem Mass will be said in Coachella Friday with interment
in the Coachella Valley Cemetery. Profidio, of the Rudy Avila labor camp, was killed when the small foreign car he was
in crashed into the rear of a truck and trailer on Marshall Road at Elm Avenue. Profidio was a native of Texas and had
lived in Patterson one month.  He was previously from Indio, California. He leaves his mother, Lucinda Marruguin; three
brothers, Robert Marruguin of Patterson, Ruben Marruguin of McFarland, and Thomas Marruguin of Coachella; and two

who died in a local hospital last Saturday.  The service was held in the Martin Funeral Home in Stockton. Graveside

Martin was a native of North Dakota and had lived In Patterson over 25 years.  He was a retired trouble shooter for
Pacific Gas and Electric Company, and would have completed 30 years with P.G.&E. in May. He was a member of
Patterson Masonic Lodge 488, Patterson chapter 417 Order of Eastern Star, the Pacific Service Employees Association,
and a Knight Commander of the Court of Honor of the Stockton Scott ish Rite. He is survived by two sons, Gary of
Turlock and Lowell of Patterson; one brother, Harry A. Martin of Stockton; and three sisters, Mrs. Laura A. Doyle of

San Jose for Sister Kathleen Oliveria, 38, who died at Mission San Jose after an extended illness. Interment was at Holy
Cross Cemetery in San Francisco.  Sister Kathleen, a native of California, had lived in the Patterson-Crows Landing area
until entering the convent.  She attended Patterson schools, graduating from Patterson High School in 1944. Sister
Kathleen entered the Sisters of the Holy Family, a Catholic teaching order, July 2, 1949, and took her final vows August
12, 1954. She leaves her mother, Mrs. Teresa Oliveria of Patterson, one brother, Donald Oliveria of Florida, and one
sister, Lucilla Balleu of Fair Oaks.

died early Wednesday at Del Puerto Hospital after a lengthy illness. The services will be held at the Federated Church at

Side for the past 57 years.  She had lived in Patterson since 1949.  She was raised in the Westport district south of

Rebecca Lodge in Newman.  She had been a lodge member since 1917.  Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Anita
Eastin of Placerville; one sister, Mrs. Frank Smith of Patterson; one brother, Glen Hendy of Patterson; and several nieces
and nephews residing on the West Side and in San Jose. Memorials may be sent to the Federated Church and the

Modesto for Mrs. Julia Peters, 96, who died last Sunday in a Modesto rest home.  Interment was in the Modesto

Colony on Walnut Avenue.  Mrs. Peters lived here until three years ago when she moved to Modesto. She was a native of

Everett Peters of Modesto; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She was active in the Brethern Church in
Patterson and Modesto.  She was preceded in death by her husband Rollie, five years ago.

Freeway Records First Highway Death; The first fatal highway accident on the West Side Freeway, Interstate 5, took
place about 6 a.m. Wednesday morning, Dead on arrival at Del Puerto Hospital was Louis J. Picone, 33, of Gustine, a
foreman with Fredricksen-Watson Construction.  He was in the southbound lane of the freeway near Howard Road when
his car struck an equipment trailer parked, unlighted, on the freeway.  The crash threw him out of his pickup and the
pickup landed on top of him. His passenger, Thurman Sheppard, 42, also of Gustine, was not thrown from the vehicle and
received only minor injuries. They were on their way to work.  Sheppard and others lifted the vehicle off of Picone. The
body was transferred from Evans Funeral Chapel to the Davis-Hansen Funeral Chapel in Newman.

Final Rites For Wife Of Local Navyman; Funeral services were conducted last Sunday at the Allen Mortuary in Turlock
for Mrs. Alice Smith, 33, of Turlock.  She was the wife of Albert V. Smith, a ship's serviceman first class stationed at the
Crows Landing Naval Auxiliary Landing Field. Mrs. Smith was found shot to death in a car parked at Jennings and
Zeering Roads.  The sheriffs office reported she apparently took her own life.  A note was found in the car and a .22
caliber revolver was clasped in her hands. She is also survived by two sons and a daughter.

James W Smith; One Dead From Crash; A 19-year -old boy from Livingston died Monday in a Modesto hospital from
internal injuries suffered in a two-car collision last Saturday afternoon on East Las Palmas Avenue. James Wayne Smith,
19, was a passenger in a Volkswagen driven by Roy Gene Janz, 18, of Atwater. Smith's brother, Charles Smith, 16, of
Livingston was also a passenger and received a severe compound fracture of the right leg.  He is in satisfactory condition
at the county hospital.  Janz also suffered minor injuries. Janz was attempting to pass a westbound car driven by Mary
Louise Lawrence of Patterson in the strong wind Saturday.  Janz' car struck the left rear of Mrs. Lawrence's car.  The
right side of the Janz' car was nearly torn off (see photo). The three injured boys were taken to Del Puerto Hospital by the
Patterson Ambulance Company and later transferred to Modesto hospitals. The California Highway Patrol office said
Janz was cited for failure to pass safely on the left causing an accident and Mrs. Lawrence was cited for impeding traffic.

his pickup truck was struck head-on by a larger truck. The accident occurred at the intersection of West Main and Fransil

Funeral Today For Alice Wong; Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Thurs. at the Salas Bros-Moore
Funeral Chapel in Modesto for Mrs. Alice Wong, 41, who died Monday in a Modesto hospital following a short illness.
The Rev. Donald Weston of St. John's Chapel of the Valley will conduct the service.  Interment will be in Lakewood
Memorial Park. Mrs. Wong is a native of Patterson. She is survived by her husband, Deck H. Wong of Modesto; three
daughters, Teresa, Diana, and Christine; her father, Wong Sing of Patterson; one sister, Lucy Jang of Merced; and three
brothers, George of Oakland, Jim and Henry Wong of Patterson.

Frank Wortman Services Held; Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at Evans Funeral Chapel for Frank
Alvin Wortman, 73, who died last Thursday in a Modesto hospital.  Interment was in the Patterson District Cemetery.
Wortman was a native of Idaho and had lived in California 45 years.  He was a former Patterson resident and a retired
logging worker. He is survived by his widow, Carrie V. Wortman of Modesto; and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Addington and
Mrs. Effie White, both of Patterson.

Funeral Today for Toby Young; Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Thursday, in Evans Funeral Chapel
for Toby Young, 56, who died Sunday on his way to Del Puerto Hospital.  He had a long illness. Interment will be in the
Patterson District Cemetery.  Young was a native of Oklahoma.  He had lived here 20 years and was the manager of the
Patterson District Cemetery.  He is survived by his wife, Emma of Patterson; two daughters, Mrs. Marie Holson of
Modesto and Mrs. Pauline Davis of Amarillo, Texas; four grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Bertha Young of Phoenix,
Texas; and two brothers and three sisters of Arizona.

Rites For Daniel Yvanes in Turlock; Requiem mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 28, in Sacred Heart Catholic
Church in Turlock for Daniel Yvanes, 23, who was killed in a traffic accident on West Main St. May 25. Burial was in
Memorial Park. A native of Los Angeles, Yvanes had lived in the Turlock and Patterson areas since 1949.  He attended
school here one year. He leaves his widow, Eloise Yvanes of Turlock; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Biviano Yvanes of
Patterson;  two brothers, Richard of the Marine Corps and David of Patterson; eight sister's, Cathy Hernandes of Crows
Landing and Yolanda Zepeda, Lydia Sisneroz, Mrs. Rosie Cano, and Rachel, Laura, Mary, Lucy Yvanes, all of Patterson.
