John Wright, about 67, a resident of the hotel, died during the blaze. He had lived in the Crows Landing area four or five years and was a farm laborer. He is reported to have been in ill health recently. His remains were taken to the Carmody Funeral Chapel in Modesto. The fire was reported about 10:30pm and was discovered by John T. "Buddy" Borba, Jr., who was also staying at the hotel. Borba said the fire was coming down the stairs as he left his room to warn the other residents upstairs. Ten persons were registered at the hotel. The firs apparently started in the upstairs near the front of the building. The J&E Café, operated by Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Amaral, was located beneath the hotel. The café was destroyed completely. The J&M Club, operated by John and Mary Wise, had only the front wall left standing and there was nothing left of the hotel but a pile of rubble. The buildings were owned by Jack Dyer, a former resident of Crows Landing who is now a merchant seaman who lives in the Bay Area. Dyer was expected to arrive sometimes Wednesday. Crows Landing Fire Chief Ed Tyler said he could give no estimate of the damage until the owner arrived. A resident of Crows Landing said the south section of the building was first moved onto its present location from Catfish Camp. It was the post office there and became the post office in Crows Landing. About 1912 the other buildings were constructed around it to form the present structure. Tyler said 16 pieces of equipment arrived to fight the blaze and prevent spreading of the fire. Two were from Crows Landing, two from Newman, three from Patterson, two from Westley, a tanker from Turlock Rural fire Dept., five pieces from the Crows Landing Naval Auxiliary Landing Field and a tanker from the Patterson Flying Service. The fire was prevented from spreading to the Crows Landing Barber Shop on the north and the Bettencourt market building on the south.
