Aguilar Jessie Ms 680711 np Mrs. Aguilar Died Friday in Modesto; A requiem mass was held Tuesday in Sacred Heart Church for Mrs. Jessie Aguilar, 60, of 124 Pleasant St., Modesto, who died Friday in a Modesto hospital. Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery with Evans Funeral Chapel in charge. Mrs. Aguilar lived In Modesto 15 years while her husband was employed in Patterson. She leaves her widower, Marcelo, and two brothers, Frank and Raymond Cuevas of Washington. Aguillon Arnoldo 680201 p2 Baby: Boy Dies After Illness: Aguillon Arnoldo; A requiem mass was celebrated January 25 in Sacred Hart Church for Arnoldo Aguillon, 9-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Juan Aguillon of Walnut Avenue Farm Labor Camp. He died January 24 in a local hospital after a brief illness. Evans Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. Besides his parents, he is survived by three brothers; Juan Jr., Rigaberto and Martin Aguillon, and three sisters, Rosalinda, Guadalupe and Hernina Aguillon, all of Patterson. Airola Hilja 681121 np Mrs. Airola Dies in Reedley; Mrs. Hilja Airola, 80, Wed suddenly November 13 in Reedley, and was buried in Modesto November 15. She was the wife of the late Andrew Airola who, before his death, conducted a blacksmith business in Patterson and Westley. The Airolas came to Patterson in 1932 and lived here until 1950 when they retired to Reedley. She was born in Finland. Survivors are four stepchildren, Waino Airola of Burbank; George Tiura, Modesto; Eero Tiura, Pacifica, and Kirsti Aspelin, San Francisco; seven grandsons and one great grandson. Allard Glenn A 681205 p2 Glenn Allard Meets Death In Newman; Services were held Saturday in Evans Funeral Chapel for Glenn Almon Allard, 77, who died Thanksgiving evening in a Newman rest home after a long illness. Interment was in Patterson. District cemetery. Mr. Allard, who was born in Eagle Grove, Iowa, came to the Los Angeles area in 1911 and married his wife Alma, March 16, 1928. The family moved to Patterson in 1929. A retired rancher, Allard was a past president of Patterson Rotary Club, a former vice president, of the Production Credit Association in Modesto and served 25 years as president of the Federal Land Bank in Modesto. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Almon Allard of McCracken Road; two sons, Leland of Patterson and Robert Allard, a professor at the University of California in Davis, and seven grandchildren. Allen Guy H 680104 p1 Services Held for Guy Allen; Services were held at the Evans Funeral Chapel Wednesday for Guy Allen, 77, long time Patterson area rancher and real estate broker, He died Sunday afternoon of a gunshot wound in the chest, which is still being investigated by the county coroner s office. He was found in the orchard of his Lemon Ave. home by his wife and a neighbor after he failed to return from a walk. A 30-30 caliber rifle was found near the body. Officiating at the services was Rev. Albert Foster, former Patterson pastor and now of Petaluma, and Patterson Lodge No. 488, F&AM. Allen was a native of Lake County and had lived here 33 years. He was a veteran of World War I, a member of the Paterson Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge , American Legion and the Federated Church. Surviving are his widow, Ruth, of Patterson; a son, Roger of Los Angles; a daughter, Mrs. Susan A. D'Ambrosio of New York; a brother, Edgar T. Allen of Modesto; two sisters, Mrs. Eva Burnell of Santa Cruz and Mrs. Veda Renfrew of Felton; and four grandchildren. Burial was in the District Cemetery. Anderson Melton 680125 p1 City Accident in December Has Fatality; The district attorney s office is reopening its investigation of a two-car collision in Patterson December 17 following the death of one of the drivers this week. It was the city s only fatal traffic accident in 1967. Police Chief Alex Kosich said he would confer with the district attorney s office at mid-week to see if additional charges would be pressed. Melton Anderson, 57, of Westley and Modesto, died at a Modesto hospital Monday night. He had been in critical condition since the crash on Highway 33 near Sperry Ave. The driver of the other vehicle, Jose M. Saenz-Bazan, 41, of Patterson has already pleaded guilty to a charge of drunk driving misdemeanor. He entered the plea in Patterson Judicial District Court December 22. The original charge was felony drunk driving, but it was reduced at the request of the DA s office. Anderson was apparently driving north and was hit head on by the other auto when it crossed the center line. Both men were alone. Anderson Walter G 680620 np Services Are Conducted For W. Anderson; Graveside services were conducted Tuesday in the Patterson District Cemetery for Walter Glassford Anderson, 52 who died June 14 in an Oakland hospital. Final rites were conducted on Monday in the Sunset Mortuary of Richmond. Born in California, Anderson had attended Patterson schools and had resided in Oakland the past 15 years. Surviving are his widow, Ruth and a son, Richard, both of Oakland and two sisters, Evelyn C. Anderson of San Francisco and Mrs. Pearl Nygrew of Kansas City, Missouri. Arias Mable 680201 p1 Funeral Held For Mrs. Arias; Catholic funeral rites were conducted at the Indian reservation cemetery at Porterville for Mable Arias, 59, who died in a local hospital January 24 after a long illness. Friends met for recital of the rosary January 25 in Evans Funeral Chapel. Mrs. Arias was a native of Onyx and lived on Jennings Road for the past five years. She is survived by her widower, Gave Arias; six sons, Luther Garfield of Porterville, Landon Garfield of Tracy, Gabriel V. Arias of Novato, and Willis Gonzales, Joey J. Arias and William J. Arias, all of Modesto; four daughters, Mrs. June Nito and Mrs. Tullie G. Chaperro, both of Tracy, Mrs. Helen DeJesus. and Rosalie Ann Arias, both of Modesto; and a brother, Barky Wells of Onyx, Azevedo Arthur 680404 np Dies In Turlock; Arthur Azevedo, aged 55, died in a local hospital at Turlock Wednesday morning after a long illness. He is survived by his wile, Emily Azevedo; a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Wilson of Little Rock Kan.; a son, Daniel Azevedo of Turlock; his father M. A. Azevedo of Patterson; three brothers, Manuel Azevedo and Tony Azevedo, Patterson, and John Azevedo, Santa Cruz; and a sister, Mrs. Mabel Pires of Patterson, and five grandchildren. The deceased grew up in Patterson and attended Crow's Landing and Patterson schools, and for many years operated a dairy farm outside Turlock. For the past 10 years he has been a resident of the city of Turlock. Rosary services will be held at 8:30 pm Friday at Allen's Mortuary, Turlock. The funeral will be at 10am Saturday in Sacred Heart church, Turlock. Beezley Debbie 680613 p1 Grave Side Rites Today; Grave side services will be held today for Debbie Beezley, 3, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Beezley of 3143 Prune Ave. Services will begin at 11 a.m. at Lake Wood Memorial Park in Empire. The young girl was drowned Tuesday about 1 p.m. in a Twin Oak Irrigation District canal. There was about three feet of water in the canal at the time of the accident. Debbie was playing in a yard sprinkler about noon when her mother asked her to stop. Mrs. Beezley went into the house to fix lunch and when she came out to call the girl, she couldn t be found. Mrs. Beezley called her husband and together they found the girl in a flume of the canal about a quarter of a mile from the house. Beezley tried mouth to mouth resuscitation without results. The Beezley s drove to the Larry Buehner ranch and called the local fire department. The young girl gave no response to the resuscitation unit. She was pronounced dead by the doctor. The girl is survived by her parents and brother Dale, nine months. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Franklin and Downs Funeral Rome in Modesto. Beglinger Nick 680125 p1 2 Die in Crash, Aschle Improved; The condition of Charles Aschle, 21, of Patterson was improved and past the crisis stage Wednesday morning, according to his mother-in-law, Mrs. Earnest Patterson. Aschle was critically injured and suffering from facial and head injuries following a fatal two car collision Saturday morning that took the lives of Timothy Corral of Patterson and Nick Beglinger of rural Turlock. Funeral services for Corral, 19, were held Wednesday morning. Requiem mass was celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. Rosary was said the night before at Evans Funeral Chapel. Corral was born in Bakersfield and had lived here for 18 years. He attended local schools and was employed at Patterson Frozen Foods. Survivors include his widow, Janet, and son Todd; two brothers, John of Los Angeles and Mike of Patterson, and his mother, Mrs. Carmen Corral of Patterson. Corral is the fourth member of his family to die in auto accidents. A sister was killed last July south of Gustine, and a brother and sister were killed in l955. Services for Beglinger, who is survived by six young children, the oldest 11, were held Wednesday in Turlock, with burial there. His wife died in childbirth 15 months ago. He was employed and resided with his children on the Frank Correia ranch at 1812 Fulkerth Road The accident occurred at the intersection of Carpenter Road and West Main about 10 a.m. Saturday. Beglinger was driving south on Carpenter and apparently failed to stop or slow down for the stop sign at West Main. Corral was driving east with Aschle as his passenger. Both drivers were dead on arrival at Turlock Community Hospital, where Aschle is now a patient. Bennett Joseph E 681024 p1 J. E. Bennett Died Wednesday; Joseph E, "Red" Bennett, a Patterson businessman for 35 or more years died Wednesday afternoon of an apparent heart attack while working at his trailer court on S. First St. He would have been 66 on Friday. Bennett apparently died sometime between 1:30 awl 3:15 Wednesday afternoon as he was changing an electric meter at the trailer court. The electricity was turned off. He was alone at the time, a helper having gone uptown for a short time, he was found shortly after 3 p.m. by Patterson City Water Co. employees Guy Scott and Fred Hogrefe. He had several attacks in the past several years. From what could be learned late Wednesday afternoon, Bennett came originally from the Ceres area. He went into business here for himself, first having a welding shop and after World War II originating a hardware store which he sold a year ago. He continued to operate Bennett s Lawnmower and Saw Shop. He was elected to the Patterson City Council in 1946. Survivors include his wife Noreen, daughters; Jean Kidder of Salinas, and June King of Ceres; three grandchildren and his mother in San Jose. Funeral services are pending. Bennett Joseph E 681031 np J.E. Bennett Buried Here; Funeral. services for Joseph E. "Red" Bennett1 former city councilman, were held in Evans Funeral Chapel Saturday. Burial was in Patterson District Cemetery. Bennett, who was a native of Keyes, came to; Patterson in 1921 and installed Bennett s Farm Equipment which he sold a year ago. He then continued to operate Bennett s Lawn Mower and Saw shop as well as Bennett s trailer Court where he was found after the heart attack which apparently caused his death. He had served on the City Council from 1946 to 1954 and had been a volunteer fireman. Bennett was survived by his widow, Noreen Bennett; two daughters, Mrs. Jean Kidder of Salinas and Mrs. June King of Turlock; his mother, Mrs. Matilda Bennett of San Jose; a sister, Amelia Atwood of San Jose; a brother, John Bennett of San Diego, and three grandchildren. Benson Wlm A 680905 p1 W.A. Benson Meets Death At 74; William A. Benson, 74, died suddenly of a heart attack in Laguna Hills. Services were Friday at Forest Lawn in Los Angeles. Benson came to Patterson, in 1911 and served in the US Army in World War I, returning afterward to live in the Patterson area where he was employed by the Standard Oil Company for many years. He is survived by his wife, Minnie Mae, of Laguna Hills and a son, Donald Benson, professor of mathematics at the University of California in Davis, and two grandchildren; two brothers, Harvey Benson of Modesto and Ray Benson of San Mateo, and two sisters, Mrs. Alice Jordan of Modesto and Mrs. Walter Sorensen of Patterson. Mrs. Sorensen from here and Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Benson and Mrs. Jordan of Modesto attended the funeral from this area. Biles Milton D 680919 np Modesto Man Is Drowned In Canal; The body of Milton David Biles, 73, of Modesto, an engineer with the Modesto & Empire Traction Co., was found at 8 am, Tuesday floating in the Delta-Mendota Canal at the Marshall Road crossing of the canal about 12 miles south of where he apparently went in. The drowned man was found by Mel Weatherred, field man for Del Puerto Supply here. Deputies surmised that Biles' Brittany Spaniel, Rusty, of whom friends said he was very fond, fell into the canal, and that his owner removed his clothing and attempted to save him. The last time the engineer was seen alive was at 10 am Saturday when a canal rider saw him fishing. The dog was pulled from the canal about 8 pm Saturday by a dove hunter and his wife of Tracy. The unidentified couple said the dog was scarcely alive. Bile's blue pickup truck was found by sheriffs officers at McCraken and Hamilton Roads. The officers said they found fishing tackle, false teeth and the engineer s wallet containing $124 near the truck. The body was taken to Salas Bros. Mortuary in Modesto. Bingham Stephen C 680905 p1 Bingham Dies in Coast City After Illness; Stephen Clifford Bingham, 55, died Tuesday in a San Francisco hospital alter an illness of four months. Funeral services are pending at Evans Funeral Chapel. A native of East Birmingham, Ala., he had lived in this area most of his life. He was a graduate of Patterson schools. For many years he was in charge of the fruit crops at the El Solyo Ranch in Vernalis. After the ranch was sold, he became an apricot grower. Bingham was a charter director of the California Apricot Producers Association, a member of the El Solyo Volunteer Fire Department, a director of West Stanislaus County Rural Fire Protection District and a member of the Patterson Lions Club. He is survived by his wife, Catherine, of 1401 Oaklea Road, Vernalis; two brothers, John Bingham of Gustine and Jerry Bingham of Vernalis; two sisters, Mrs. Sally Mendes of Long Beach and Mrs. Molly Foster of San Francisco. Brookey Robert L 680516 np R.L. Brookey To Be Buried In Grayson; Robert Leon Brookey, 68, died early Monday morning in a Paradise hospital. He had made his home with his sister, Mrs. William L. Diesbrock in Paradise since January. Brookey was born Sept.7,1899, to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Brookey in Coal Hill, Ark. The family moved to Grayson in 1902 where he was raised. As a young man he moved to the Bay Area and in 1919 became an employee of the U.S. Post Office Department as a railway postal clerk, and traveled mainly in California and Oregon. After his retirement in September, 1959, he made his home in Salt Lake City, Utah, until moving to Paradise. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ruth B. Diesbrock of Paradise and Mrs. Nora B. Chapman of Santa Cruz; one brother, Walter W. Brookey of Modesto; and two nieces, Mrs. Dorothea Schneider of Capay and Louise Diesbrock of Paradise. Funeral services were held in the Hall-Van Hook Funeral Chapel in Chico Tuesday with the Rev. Paul Aasen of the Faith Lutheran Church officiating. Norman Sandberg was organist and Merrill Womach, soloist. Cremation followed at the Chico Crematory. At a future date, the ashes will be buried in the Grayson Pioneer Cemetery, Grayson. Butts Thomas R 680620 np Youth Killed In Accident; Thomas Richard Butts, 18, of Gustine, grandson of Glen Hendy of Patterson, was killed instantly Saturday night when the car in which he was riding went out of control and slammed broadside into an oncoming van on Highway 140 east of Gustine. With him, and also dead, was Joseph Augusto Oliveria, 19, driver of the car, also of Gustine. Both boys were June graduates of Gustine High School. Funeral services for Butts were held Tuesday in the Evans Krieger Chapel, Gustine. Interment was in the Hills Ferry Cemetery, Newman. Cartwright, 47, of North Little Rock, Ark., brother of Mrs. Harold Hill of Patterson, died recently alter a long illness in Veterans Administration Hospital in North Little Rock. The funeral was held in North Little Rock with a military service also at Adona, Ark. Cartwright served during World War II in the U.S. army, and remained active afterward in the Reserves. He was a Chief Warrant Officer. He is survived by his wife, Jimmie; one son, Dowel, Jr., two daughters, Rhona and Lesa Cartwright, and his mother, Mrs. Ensor Cartwright. Crawford Virginia N 680530 np Death Claims Mrs. Crawford; Services were held May 21 in the Franklin & Downs Funeral Home, Modesto, for Virginia Norma Crawford, 73, formerly of Patterson, who died May 18 in a Modesto rest home alter a lengthy illness. Crawford in 1919 in Mississippi and lived there until 1922 when they moved to San Jose. In 1947 they moved to Westley and Mr. Crawford retired from being a member of the California State Board of Equalization. They remained there until 1961 when they moved to Modesto. He died in 1963 and Mrs. Crawford moved to Patterson to live near her daughter, Mrs. Marcel Chapuis. Besides her daughter, she is survived by two sons, William W. Crow Mary O 680502 p1 Mary Crow Services Set This Morning; Requiem mass will be said this morning, Thursday, at 9:30 in Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Crows Landing, for Mary Oliveira Crow, 67, who died Tuesday morning at a local hospital after a lengthy illness. Interment will be in the Hills Ferry Cemetery. A native of Bloomfield, she lived in Crows Landing 56 years. She is survived by two sisters, Lena Oliveira and Mrs. Rose Bettencourt of Crows Landing, and two brothers, John J. Oliveira of Newman and Manuel Oliveira of Petaluma. Mrs. Crow had been a member of UPPEC and SPRSI Portuguese Lodges and the Crows Landing Altar Society. Darling Aneta 680307 np Mother of Elwood Schut Dies Suddenly; Funeral services were held Sunday for Mrs. Aneta Darling, 58, mother of Elwood Schut, of Patterson. Mrs. Darling died suddenly last Wednesday of a heart attack. She was a resident of Mountain View where services were held, and a former resident of Ripon and Modesto. She had lived in the Mountain View area for the past 10 years. Survivors besides Schut, include her widower, Robert; a daughter, Mrs. Bette Howell of Misawa Air Base, Japan; her mother, Mrs. Clara Huston of Ripon; two sisters, Mrs. Beth Renz of Manteca and Mrs. Ethel Murphy of Carson City, Cob.; two brothers, Richard of Ripon and Don Huston of Fresno; and two grandchildren. July 28, 1813, he married Miss Vada Kirk In San Jose, and the couple has lived here continuously since then, retiring in December, 1962. Originally an employee of the pioneer J. M. Kerr hardware and plumbing firm, Fink and his wife established a plumbing and electrical business of their own in 1916, and they became co-owners of the Del Puerto Theater in 1932. Among their theater customs was an annual free children s Christmas show held first in 1932. The well-known Patterson business man served on the city council from 1932 to 1940. He was a charter member of the Patterson Rotary Club, and a member of the Masonic Lodges Aahmes Shrine Temple, the San Jose Bodies of Scottish Rite and the Patterson Chapter of Eastern Star. They met and married in Paradise, California, the old name for Modesto. The Halverson family settled on the east side of the valley, and there are still Halversons living there. Nieves Hernandez, 48, a farm laborer from Newman, was killed at 1:25 Tuesday morning when the car he was driving left Highway 33 about a mile south of Crows Landing and crashed into three large walnut trees. He was driving south at the time. The vehicle was totally demolished and somewhat disintegrated. The CHP theorized he was driving at an extremely high speed, probably in excess of 90 miles an hour. Smith Edward J 680905 np Man Is Found In Orchard By Grower; A supposed transient worker, tentatively identified as Edward John Smith, 54, was found dead Monday by Herman Ohlson in his apricot orchard at Sycamore and Fig Avenues. The tentative identification was made from a San Joaquin county jail discharge slip found on his body. The man is thought to be an itinerant farm worker in Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties. The autopsy indicated that death was due to natural causes. He apparently had been dead about two weeks. Technicians are checking fingerprints. Varellas Ysidoro R 681107 p1 Second Death Results From Foggy Crash; The crash north of Westley on Highway 33 10 days ago claimed its second victim last Friday. Ysidoro Ramire Varellas, 64, of Grayson died in a Modesto hospital of severe head and chest injuries. A passenger in his car, Petronila Cibrian, 61, of Tracy was killed outright in the October 28 crash in the fog. David Osnes, 18, of Patterson is apparently improving at Doctor s Hospital in Modesto. He was the driver of the Modesto Junior College school bus that crashed into the wreckage of two cars and a truck that had rammed together in the dense early morning fog. Osnes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Severre Osnes of Patterson, suffered a severely broken leg, with one break at the thigh, another at the ankle, and a crushed shin. He was in surgery five hours the morning of the accident and again last Friday. More surgery is slated for early next week. He was born in Mississippi, and retired in Modesto for a short time before moving to Manteca five years ago. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Viola Jane Watson who, since his death, has moved to Modesto to live with her daughter, Mrs. Roy Turner, formerly of Patterson. She was Mrs. Loretta Roberts Welty, who died last Thursday at a Modesto hospital. Private services were held the following day in Modesto. Mrs. Welty was the widow of Noah Welty. who with his brother John had an extensive farming operation on the West Side, primarily raising wheat and barley. Noah joined his brother here in 1888, coming from Ohio. He died in 1947, after which Mrs. Welty moved from the ranch to Patterson. Welty Road in the Vernalis area is named after the family.
