Acquistapace Victor 690501 np Patterson Man Dies in Italy; Word has been received by Mrs. Angelina Boschi of the death of her brother, Victor Acquistapace, 80, in Albosaggio, Italy, April 9, Acquistapace had been visiting relatives in the Italian town since July of last year, and had planned to return to Patterson this spring. A retired farmer, he had worked as a night watchman on the Mendota Canal during its construction. He came to California in 1907 and to this area in 1917. Besides his sister, he is survived by four niece and six nephews. Alameda Clara 690717 np Mrs. Alameda Dies at Coast; Funeral services were held Saturday at the Franklin Downs Funeral Home in Modesto for Mrs. Clara Alameda, 57, who died July 9 in a San Francisco Hospital after a long illness. Interment was in Acacia Memorial Park, Modesto. A native of Minnesota, Mrs. Alameda was a long time resident of Patterson. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Modesto Surviving her are her widow, Joseph Alameda of Modesto; a daughter, Lydia Fritz, Modesto; a sister, Eva Paul, Modesto; and two brothers, Tom Fritz, Waterford, and Bill Fritz, Orland. Allen Eva 690227 np Eva Allen Meets Death In Sonora; Services were held Tuesday in the Southern Baptist Church here for Mrs. Eva Allen, 57, of Columbia who died in a Sonora hospital last Thursday. Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. Mrs. Allen is survived by her husband, Glenn Kenneth Allen in Sonora; a son, Glenn Kenneth Allen, Jr., with the service in Denver; two brothers, Wayne Harris, Ralls, Tex., and Ennis Harris, Slaton, Tex. The Aliens lived in Patterson approximately seven years ago before moving to Columbia. Funeral arrangements were in charge of Heuton Memorial Chapel in Sonora. Armstrong Walter G 691023 np Funeral Here for Armstrong; Funeral services were conducted last Thursday, October 16, in Evans Funeral Chapel for Walter George Armstrong, 39, who died October 13 in a local hospital after a long illness. Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. A steel inspector by trade, he was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and had lived at 119 East Fifth Street in Crows Landing for six months. He was veteran of the Korean War. Survivors are his wife, LaVern Armstrong of Crows landing; two sons, Raymond and Frank Armstrong of Philadelphia; one stepson, Anthony Fain, and two stepdaughters, Jerina and Peggy Fain; his mother, Mrs. Mary Wise, all of Crows Landing; his father, Raymond Armstrong of Morristown, N. J. and two step-brothers, John Deegan of Santa Monica and Gene Deegan of Philadelphia. Arroyo Juan 690925 np Westley Baby Buried Here; Graveside services were held September 18 in Patterson District Cemetery for Juan Arroyo, hour-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Marcilino Arroyo of Westley, who died September 15 in a Modesto hospital. Azevedo Maria C 691204 np Local Man Loses Mother in San Mateo; Mrs. Maria C. Azevedo, 84, of San Mateo, grandmother of John J. Azevedo, Jr. of Patterson, died November 25 in a San Mateo hospital following several days care after a sudden stroke. A requiem mass was said in St Mathews's Church in that city November 28, and she was buried in St. John's Cemetery there. Surviving her, besides her grandson, are her husband, Manuel B. Azevedo; a daughter, Miss Eva Azevedo, and a son, John J. Azevedo, all of San Mateo, and two great grandsons here. A native of St. George Island in the Azores, she had lived in San Mateo 71 years. Ball Beula B 691023 np Mrs. Beula Ball Dies after Long Illness; Services were held Saturday in Evans Funeral Chapel for Mrs. Beula B. Ball, 74, who died last Thursday, October 16, in Modesto alter a long illness. Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. Mrs. Ball was the widow of O. S. "Ossie" Ball, chief of the Patterson Volunteer Fire Department from 1929 to 1964, and Stanislaus County Fire Warden from l936 to 1962. She also was mother-in-law of Richard Lyng, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. A Modestan, Lyng was state agriculture secretary before his appointment by President Richard Nixon. Surviving Mrs. Ball, besides her daughter, Mrs. Bethyl Lying of Washington, D.C., are a sister, Mrs. M. E. Hanshaw and a brother, Ed Anderson, both of Stockton; two granddaughters, Mrs. Gary Robinson of Modesto and Marilyn Lyng, a student at the University of California at Berkeley. Both granddaughters were frequent visitors to Patterson in to their growing years. The family has made a request that remembrances be made to the Stanislaus County Heart Association. Bandin Arturo 690403 np Requiem mass was celebrated Monday in Sacred Heart Church for Arturo Bandin, 3, who was fatally injured last Thursday morning near his home in Grayson. Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. The small boy was run over by a school bus driven by Jack Brown, 29, of the Patterson Unified School District just as he was leaving his home to start on his route. A neighbor, seeing the accident, called out to Brown, who stopped, and immediately took the boy to the hospital for treatment, but he died Thursday morning, Brown stated that he had checked all around the bus and looked in both mirrors before starting out from his driveway. The dead child is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bandin; seven brothers, Jaime, Richard, Rudy, George, Mike, Frank and Manuel; and two sisters, Cecelia and Herminia, all of Grayson. Bertolosso John Sr 690925 p1 Bertolosso Meets Death in Oakhurst; Graveside services were held September 16 at Oakhill Cemetery in Oakhurst for John Bertolosso, Sr., 88, of 0akhurst, formerly of Patterson, and a rosary was recited the previous evening in the Chapel of Lisle's Funeral Home in that city. Mr. Bertolosso died September 12 in a Fresno hospital after an illness of five weeks. However, he had been ailing for the past year. A native of Turin, Italy, he came to McCloud, California, 59 years ago where he lived for two years before moving to Patterson, his home for 40 years. He was a retired sporting goods merchant having run the store now being operated by his son, John Bertolosso West Side Sportsman's Club. He moved to Oakhurst 12 years ago. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Louise Bertolosso of Oakhurst; his son here previously mentioned; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Williams of Oakhurst, Mrs. Laura Lindquist of Santa Ynez; 10 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Bliss Jessie M 690313 np Mrs. Bliss Dies at Her Home; Mrs. Jessie May Bliss, 63, died unexpectedly Thursday at her home at 529 North Fourth Street. Funeral services were held at Evans Funeral Chapel, and interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. A native Californian, Mrs. Bliss had lived in Patterson for 22 years. She is survived by her husband Ralph Bliss of this city; a sister, Mrs. Dorris Katen of Westminster, a brother, William McBride of Glendora. Brewer Elizabeth 690306 np Former Resident Dies in Tracy; Services were held Tuesday in the First Presbyterian Church in Tracy for Mrs. Elizabeth Brewer, 64, formerly of Patterson, who died there after a long illness. Surviving are her husband, Milton "Bishop" Brewer of Tracy; a daughter, Mrs. Patricia Savory of Virginia; three brothers, Manuel Silva of Patterson William Silva, Sacramento, and Phillip Silva of Isleton, and a sister, Mrs. Mae Lawrence of San Leandro. Briggs Esther W 690116 np Mrs. Briggs Dies In Newman Home; Funeral rites will be held today, Thursday, at 2 p.m. at Evans Funeral Chapel for Mrs. Esther W. Briggs, 70, who died Monday in a Newman rest home after a long illness. Interment will be in Patterson District Cemetery. Born in Kansas, Mrs. Briggs lived in Patterson 20 years. She leaves her husband, Leonard Briggs of 621 North Third Street; four brothers, Leonard and Lauren Wilson of Kansas, Herbert Wilson of Colorado and Don Wilson of Rio Vista, and two sisters, Mrs. Saloma Williams of Kansas and Mrs. Joseph H. Peck of Auburn. Buchanan Hyson V Mrs 690904 np Mrs. Buchanan Dies at 79; An Eastern Star funeral service was held Saturday morning at Evans Funeral Chapel for Mrs. Hyson Vera Buchanan, 79, who died last Thursday, August 28, in a local hospital. A native of Georgia, she had lived in Patterson about 25 years. She was an active member of the Eastern Star. She is survived by a son, Jack Baker of Arizona; one step-daughter, Mrs. Judson Stone of Modesto, and three step-sons, Charles Buchanan of Pescadero; William Buchanan of San Leandro, and Bruce Buchanan of Los Angles. Burnett Freda M 690109 np Mrs. Burnett Dies Here; Services for Mrs. Freda Mae Burnett, 72, who died January 1 in a local hospital, were held in Bishop, Calif., Saturday with interment in the Big Pine, Calif., Cemetery. Mrs. Burnett had lived in California for 65 years, the last three months with a son, Joe Field of 204 North Sixth Street. She also is survived by a daughter, Frances Ellis of Reno, Nev. Carter Meets Death in Patterson; Services were held Tuesday at Evans Funeral Chapel for Wilburn Calvin Carter, 75, who died Saturday in a local hospital after a long illness. Burial was in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Oklahoma, he had lived here for 23 years. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Dixie Carter of 300 South Fifth Street; a son, Gene Carter, Patterson; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Pederson of Corte Madera; a sister, Mrs. Marty Mitchell of Oklahoma, two granddaughters, Mrs. Dixie Davis and Delany Carter, and a great granddaughter, Cheri Davis, all of Patterson. Cernusco James T 690422 np Brother Dies Suddenly; James T. Cernusco, 62, brother of Mrs. Mario Ielmini of Patterson, died suddenly May 13 in his home city of Livermore. A requiem mass was celebrated for him May 16 at St. Michael s Church, Livermore, and he was buried there in St. Michael s Cemetery. Mr. Cernusco was co-owner of Polmoni's Cocktail Lounge in Livermore, and had been in the bakery business there for many years. He was a member of the Livermore-Pleasanton Elks Lodge No. 2117 and the Livermore Eagles Aerie No. 609. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Augusta Cernusco; a son, James A. Cernusco, a daughter, Mrs. Eleanor Sahlin, and another sister, Mrs. Teresa Polomoni, all of Livermore. Mr. Cernusco often visited in Patterson at the Ielmini home. Charters Ernest D 691211 np Local Woman Loses Father in Turlock; Mr. Ernest D. Charters, 85, father of Mrs. Ken Nordell of Patterson, died Friday in a Turlock rest home alter a brief illness. Services were held Monday morning at the Allen Mortuary there, and interment was in Turlock Memorial Park. A native of Lake Benton, Minnesota, Mr. Charters had lived in Turlock since 1906 where he was a jeweler and hatchery man. Other survivors are another daughter, Mrs. Maxine Gloeckler of Turlock, and eight grandchildren. Cheatham Mildred E 691009 np Mrs. Cbeatham Dies Up North; News has just arrived here of the August 25 death by heart attack in Portland, Ore., of Mrs. Mildred Edith Cheatham, 64, who lived 42 years of: her life in Patterson. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. John Larkin in The Little Chapel of the Climes in that city, and burial was in Willamett National Cemetery there. Mrs. Cheatham was born in Cayucas, California, and, after living with her family in Patterson, moved several years ago to Portland where her widower, C. I. Cheatham, now is a patient at Kerney Care Clinic, at 2250N.W. Kerney, and, according to a family friend here Mrs. Emil Amundsen, would like to receive letters from old friends here. Other survivors are two daughters, Mrs. John Moehlman of Norwalk, Ohio, and Mrs. John Bellmont of Portland, 0regon; her mother, Mrs. Adeline Bassi of San Ardo; two sisters, Mrs. Sylvia Foletta of San Ardo and Mrs Joseph Hutchinson of Paso Robles; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Claiborn Hazel B 691218 np Mrs Claiborn Buried Here; Mrs. Hazel Bohannon Claiborn, 79, who lived in Patterson from 1936 to 1962, was buried in Patterson District Cemetery Monday after friends were allowed to pay their last respects at the Evans Funeral Chapel. The former Patterson woman died December 11 in Wister, Oklahoma, after a long illness. She was a native of Indiana. Surviving her are two daughters, Mrs. Manuel Iturreria of Patterson and Mrs. Richard McGee of Crows Landing; two sons, Joe Bohannon of Phoenix, Ariz., and Tom Bohannon of Modesto, and nine grandchildren. Clemens Clem 690424 np Modesto Man Dead After Fall into Canal; A Modesto man, Clem Clemens, 61, was pulled form the Delta-Mendota Canal near Patterson Sunday afternoon after he may have suffered a heart attack. He could not be revived by city police Sgt. Charles McNatt, who rushed to the scene. Clemens had been fishing just north of the Sperry Ave. bridge. A witness, V.A. White of 307 S Third Street, said Clemens raised up, then fell into the water. He did not struggle, White said. Lyle Johnson and an employee, Joe Jimenez, were stopped, and Johnson drove into town for help while Jimenez stayed with the floating body. Franklin and Downs Funeral Home in Modesto handled the service arrangements. Connelly John E 690807 np Funeral for Connellys Held Here Yesterday; Services were held yesterday, Wednesday, in Evans Funeral Chapel for John Edward Connelly, 43, and his wife, Willa Mae Connelly, 41, who were killed instantly early Saturday morning when their car ran off the road west of Turlock and crashed into a concrete irrigation gate. Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. Both were natives of Oklahoma, and had lived in Patterson 17 years. He was a warehouseman for Patterson Frozen Foods, Inc., and a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army overseas. They are survived by four children, John with the Air Force in Mississippi: Jerry with the U.S., Army in Vietnam, and Diane and Bobby Connelly, both of Patterson. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Haley Connelly of Oklahoma; a brother, Billy Connelly of Oklahoma, and four sisters, Mrs. Frieda Adams, Mrs. Creasy Morris and Mrs. Pauline Scott, all of Oklahoma, and Mrs. Betty Siegmund of Southgate. Mrs. Connelly also leaves tier father, Henry Hutchison of Patterson; two sisters, Mrs. Geraldine Buckner, Pacifica, and Mrs. Gertrude Hipp, Modesto; two brothers, John Goad, Milpitas; and Billy Ray Goad, Stockton. Mrs. Connelly was thrown from the vehicle which had flipped over on its top following the crash shortly after 2 a. m. The California Highway Patrol and other assisting on the scene worked for nearly an hour to free Mr. Connelly. According to the CHP, Connelly had been driving at a high rate of speed west bound on West Main Avenue when he went off the left side of the road at Dianne Drive and continued 170 feet before ramming the concrete Turlock Irrigation District gate box. Pieces of the eight inch thick gate box were found scattered over a 30 foot area. Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. Mrs. Covello was born in Italy, and lived on the West Side for 54 years, 44of them in Patterson. She is survived by her widower, Pasquale "Pat" Covello, three sons, Carl, James and Albert Covello, all of Patterson; six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Cryer Amanda R 690724 np Mrs. Cryer Dies at 82; Funeral rites were conducted Saturday in Evans Funeral Chapel for Mrs. Amanda Rebecca Cryer, 82, of 901 Bartch Ave. who died July 16 in a local hospital after a short illness. Burial was in Patterson District Cemetery. Mrs. Cryer, who was born in Tennesse, lived in Patterson for 34 years. She leaves two sons, W. T. Cryer of Patterson and Luke Cryer of Torrence; two daughters; Mrs. Emma Belle Baugh of Los Banos and Mrs. Violet Houseright of Patterson; a brother, Roy Land of Texas; 17 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. Mrs. Cryer's husband, Ralph Houston Cryer died in 1962. He is survived by two other daughters, Mrs. Elaine Dill of Turlock and Mrs. Sammie Gaywood, Arizona; a son, James Samuel Darr, Jr., of Boron; a sister, Mrs. Minnie Vineyard, Sacramento; 11 grandchildren and 11great grandchildren. Decker Harvey 691211 np Mrs. Tyler Attends Rites for Father; Mrs. Allen Tyler of 100 South Seventh Street has returned from Phelps, Wisconsin, where she attended the funeral of her father, Harvey Decker, 74, of that city. Mr. Decker died November 23 of pneumonia in a Phelps hospital after a brief illness. Services were held at Gafney Funeral Home in Eagle River, and burial was in the Phelps Cemetery. A native of Phelps, he spent most of his life in the Orient with many years in India and Hong Kong employed by the Texas Oil Company. He had been a member of the Masonic Lodge for 50 years. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Rose Decker of Phelps, three sons, David of Phelps, Harvey of San Diego and John Decker of Glendale; and two daughters besides Mrs. Tyler, Mrs. Margaret Shaw of Glendale and Mrs. Maida Heath of Sacramento. Until Mr. Decker s sudden illness, the Tylers had been expecting him and his wife in Patterson for Thanksgiving. Durate Amelia P 691002 np Mrs. Duarte Dies Here; A requiem mass was said Monday morning at Sacred Heart Church for Mrs. Amelia Palma Duarte,66, who died last Thursday, September 25, in a Patterson hospital after a long il1ness. Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. Mrs. Duarte was born in Arizona and lived in Westley for 20 years Surviving her are two daughters, Mrs. Ester Alvarado and Mrs. Rosie Ramirez; three sons, Rauol, Rudy and Carlos Duarte, all of West1ey; a brother, Roy Palma; two sisters, Mrs. Angelina Flores and Mrs. Annie Ferrell all of Arizona; 27 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Eggers William 690605 np Funeral Services Held for Former Pattersonite; Funeral services were held May 28 in the chapel of Hotchkiss Mortuary, Tracy, for William Eggers, 80, who lived in Patterson from 1923 to 1939. He died in a Tracy convalescent hospital after a long illness. Interment was in Tracy Cemetery. A native of San Joaquin City, a community about 10 miles south of Tracy that has now disappeared, he lived most of his life in the Tracy, Patterson and Stockton areas. While in Patterson, he was a ranch superintendent for Del Monte Corporation. The family left here for the Rio Vista area. Most of his life and at his retirement he was an operating engineer. He was a veteran of World War I, and served with the Eighth Mounted Regiment of the Marine Corps in Cuba in 1919. He is survived by eight children, Dennis, Norman L., Robert and William Eggers and Mrs. Meralee Light, all of Tracy; Kenneth Eggers of Milpitas; Mrs. Betty Machado of Santa Cruz, and Mrs. Beverly Derrick of San Jose. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Louise Raffensperger, Mrs. Carrie Kennner and Mrs. Emma Gonzales, all of Tracy; l4 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Esoaraza Juan A 690410 np 1 Killed, 2 Injured on Carpenter; Joe and Joan Martini, son and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bart Martini, are recovering satisfactorily this week from injuries they received in a two car crash last Saturday that took the life of a Modesto man. Joe was released from Scenic General Hospital on Monday. He suffered hand, face and chest cuts. Joan, a student at Chico State College who was home for Easter vacation, was more seriously injured and is still hospitalized at Scenic. She suffered a severe eye cut, as well as other facial cuts. A passenger in the back seat of the Martini car, Sue Floethe of Twenty-Nine Palms, was held overnight only for observation. Killed in the Carpenter Road accident was Juan A. Esparaza, 28. His southbound small foreign car slid broadside when he apparently lost control on a small curve and was struck broadside by Martini's car. Fink George W 690123 p1 Death Claims CL Pioneer G. Fink; Services were held Wednesday at the Evans-Krieger Chapel in Newman for George W. Fink, 84, of Crows Landing who died Monday in a local hospital. Interment was in Hills Ferry Cemetery, Newman. He is survived by a son, Donald Fink of Crows Landing; a daughter, Mrs. Martha E. Powell of Dayton, Ohio; nine grandchildren; one great grandson; two sisters, Miss Esther R. Fink of Crows Landing and Mrs. Eva Marie McGinnis, Newman. A prominent community leader, Fink will be remembered as a banker, wildlife conservationist, organizer of the Gustine Land and Cattle Company, the Gustine Gun Club and of the Crows Landing Water Company, past president of the Orestimba Water District and insurance writer. He was born April 13, 1884, on a ranch a half mile northeast of Crows Landing. His father, who came to Crows Landing from Wisconsin in 1812, was a grain farmer, and his mother was from Tennessee. Fink often said he recalled when the San Joaquin Valley was a huge stretch of grain. The early Crows Landing man started his business career young, running a bank at the age of 25. In 1910 he organized the First National Bank of Crows Landing and managed it for 35 years before selling it. In 1912 he built the building now occupied by the Crows Landing branch of the First Western Bank. The Gustine Land and Cattle Co. which he incorporated in l926 got its start with the purchase of 2,217 acres of land bought at $25 an acre. The Gustine Gun Club, organized the same year, elected him president, treasurer of the board of directors and manager, positions he held for many years. Fink was one of the men who attended a meeting in Chicago years ago to consider the depletion of ducks in the nation, and from this session arose Ducks Unlimited. His organization of the Crows Landing Water company took place in May of 1946. He served as its president for many years. The Orestimba Water District, which he helped to organize and of which he is a past president, serves about 11,000 acres. He was a past president of Grasslands Irrigation District and a member of the 50 Plus Club of Stanislaus County. Greer John W 690710 np Land Grant Descendant Dies in Crows Landing; John W. Greer, 73, of 8001 Hogan Road, Crows Landing, died suddenly in Del Puerto Hospital Saturday. Services were held Wednesday at Evans Funeral Chapel, and burial was in Hills Ferry Cemetery Newman. A native of Menlo Park, he had ranched in Crows Landing since 1950, Greer a was fifth generation descendant of Ignacio Soto who arrived in California in 1776 with the De Anza expedition. Don Rafael Soto, son Ignacio Soto and Greer's great grandfather, once owned most of what is now Palo Alto. Soto received this land as a huge Spanish land grant and named it Rancho Rinconada del Arroyo de San Francisco. Greer was a member of the Veterans of World War I in Turlock, and in 1966 was awarded the Silver Star with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, the U.S. Army s third highest combat decoration. The decoration came 48 years after he was cited for bravery in the First World War. According to the citation, Greer, who was serving as a private with a medical detachment between the Argonne and the Manse River, "did excellent first aid work with absolute disregard for personal safety". He placed telephone lines through battle zone while exposed to heavy shell fire, and also helped evacuate wounded soldiers through heavy fire. Jewell Wesley W Lt 690710 np Plane Crash Kills Pilot at CL Base; The blowout of a tire on a routine practice landing caused the life of a pilot last Thursday at the Crows Landing Naval Auxiliary Landing Field. Killed when the plane touched down, then flipped on its side was Lt. Wesley Wayne Jewell, 26, of Bangor. He was a Navy reservist. The plane burst into flames, and the ejector rocket was activated. Kolding s pickup struck the rear of a heavier truck and he was pinned under the truck for some time before being released. A native of Lompoc, he moved with the family to the Westley area in 1936. He was graduated from Patterson High School in 1942 and farmed near Westley for approximately 10 years before moving to Chico. He also farmed in this area for several years before going into the insecticide industry in which he has been occupied for the past two years, acting as manger of the firm, Allied Industries, for the past year. Brooks of the Modesto Sheriff s Department Wednesday announced that the body of Micky Moore of Newman, who was drowned while fishing March l5, has been recovered. The body was found in the canal near Zacharias Road, and the remains were taken to Evans Krieger Funeral Chapel in Newman. The discovery was made when the Bureau of Reclamation opened several weirs or control gates across the canal in the hope that the body may have lodged against one of the gates and would be flushed through by the rush of water. The boy was found five miles down stream from where he fell in. Captain Brooks said that the Sheriff s Department had a plane in the air and a deputy on the bank at the time the discovery was made but credit for the finding goes to the Reclamation Department. Nelson Jr., 26, who died Friday afternoon from injuries incurred in an accident on Interstate 580 near Pleasanton. Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. The fatal crash occurred when Nelson, driving his own two-trailer semi east was struck head on by a "dolly", a single axle carrying four wheels, which had become detached from a truck proceeding in the opposite direction and crossed the dividing strip. The crumpled cab of the Nelson truck resulting from the collision drew the attention of six Highway Patrol Units, and one Livermore police car and a Yellow Cab were called into service to rush blood from the Oakland and Livermore Veteran's Hospital blood banks to Valley Memorial Hospital where he was being cared for in an effort to save his life. Norton Densel L 691218 p1 Turlock Accident Causes Death of Patterson Man; Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in Evans Funeral Chapel for Densel Lee Norton, 25, who died Friday morning in an industrial accident Thursday at the Varco-Pruden plant in Turlock. Interment was Patterson District Cemetery. Norton and a coworker, H. T. Welch, were welding in a repair shop when the accident occurred at 9:15 a.m., and the Patterson man died at 6:55 a.m. Friday in a Turlock hospital. According to Turlock Rural Fire Chief Robert Schmidt, who helped conduct an investigation Thursday, a closed container of flammable liquid apparently ruptured and then exploded soaking Norton s clothes and setting them on fire. Cause of the disaster, as revealed by preliminary investigation, was the heating of the container by burning materials near it. Norton s coworker suffered minor burns on his hands when he tried to rip the burning clothes off Norton. Other workers in the plant rushed to the aid of the burning man, and put out the flames with a dry powder fire extinguisher. An ambulance then was summoned. Burial was in the Tracy Cemetery. The family had asked the memorials be sent to Sacred Heart parish at 529 I Street, Patterson, to be devoted to the Bonaventure Hall Fund. Mrs. Patello, a native of Los Angeles, lived near Vernalis for the past 14 years. Roberson Edna 690422 np Pioneer Dies in Palo Alto; Funeral services were held Tuesday in Palo Alto for Mrs. Edna Roberson, 84, who died there Saturday after a long illness. She was buried in a Palo Alto cemetery. Mrs. Roberson, the daughter of pioneer parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin M. Horr, was born on the Horr homestead in Del Puerto Canyon. Her father was the first white child born in Tuolumne County. Between 1910 and 1920 she lived in the Patterson area. Mrs. Roberson is survived by two sons in Palo Alto and several grandchildren, and a cousin Mrs. Bert Sykes in Patterson. Robinson Daisie A 690925 p1 Accidental Death Ruled in Unusual Auto Accident Here; The death early Wednesday morning downtown area of Mrs. Daisie A. Robison, 61, has been ruled accidental by city police after receiving a pathologist report that afternoon. Mrs. Robison was killed by her own car in an unusual accident on Del Puerto Ave. as she stopped to drop off a bundle of laundry at the West Side Cleaners and Laundry. She had stopped briefly just before 6 a.m. at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Neva Staggs, then proceeded to drive up on the Del Puerto Ave. side of the laundry to use a bundle drop. Police say she apparently got out of her car and started walking toward the building, only to discover the vehicle had been left in reverse and was slowly backing up with the car door open. As she stepped back over to the car to take it our of gear, the car door pushed her against a tree, its open edge severing an artery in her thigh. The auto continued backwards for a number of feet before striking a small tree. Mrs. Robinson apparently was able to take it our of gear and it coasted forward again to near it original position. Death was caused by massive bleeding. She was found lying beside the car at 6:25 a.m. by Clarence Wade, a laundry employee who heard the car motor running. She was pronounced dead a few minutes later. Mrs. Robinson is survived by her widower, Melvin Robinson of Patterson, a daughter, Neva Staggs of Patterson, brothers Donald and Tilden Brughelli of Lompoc, and two grandchildren. Zanlish Robert A 690605 p1 Murder Suspect Being Held; A Santa Clara man has been charged here with the murder last week of Robert A. Zanlish, 25, whose bullet ridden body was found by three Turlock hunters a1ong the roadway in the Del Puerto Canyon just a few yards into Stanislaus County. Charged is Donald Paul Griffin, 29, of Santa Clara. He reportedly had been drinking with Zanlish earlier on the night the former state prison parolee was killed. Griffin was arraigned in Patterson Justice Court before Judge Reuben Swanson and is being held without bail for preliminary hearing June 16 in county Superior Court.
