Alvarado Antonio 701105 np Police Seek Hit and Run Death Car; City police are continuing investigation into the hit and run death of an yet unidentified man Tuesday night. The accident occurred about 11 p.m. on Highway 33 in front of El Solyo Village. Chief Alex Kosich said he has some information about a car being driven south on the highway, and police are searching for a 1962 or 1963 Chevrolet that is extensively damaged on either the front or the driver s side. The dead man carried no identification except a labor card bearing the name Antonio Alvarado. He was killed instantly. Alves Frank A 700716 np Rosary Friday For F. F. Alves; A rosary will be recited tomorrow, Friday, at 8 p.m. in Evans Funeral Chapel for Frank A. Alves, 80, who died Wednesday morning at a local hospital after a long illness.. Requiem mass will he said at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church, and burial will be in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of the Azore Islands, Alves had lived here at 724 Eucalyptus Ave. for 50 years. He was a retired dairyman. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Alice Alves at home; a son, Anthony Alves of Patterson; a daughter, Mrs. Olympia Silva of San Luis Obispo, and a brother, Geromino Alves of the Azores. Amundsen Elsie 700906 np Elsie Amundsen services today; Services will be held today, Thursday, at 1 p.m. in Our Saviours Lutheran Church for Elsie Amundsen of Turlock, 84, who died Monday in a Turlock hospital. Interment will be in Patterson District Cemetery. A California native, Mrs. Amundsen was a resident of Patterson before moving to Turlock in 1968. She was a member of Our Saviours Lutheran Church. She is survived by her husband, Emil Amundsen of Turlock; three Sons, Velton Hudson of Ukiah, Emil Torrison of Watsonville and Donald Torrison of Modesto; 12 grandchildren, 17 great- grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Born in Oakland, Mrs. Aranciba grew up to Patterson, later moving to Manteca with her family. She was the daughter of the late Mrs. Manuel T. Brown of Olive Ave. Married to Escaloa, she lived with her husband most of their lives in Dos Palos. They bought a ranch in Mecced a few years ago, and she lived there until her recent illness and death. Survivors are her husband, John Arancibia of Merced, two daughters, Miss Doris Aranciba of Merced and Mrs. Donald Sorg of Dos Palos; one son, Harvy Arancibia, Gustine, one grandson; six brothers, Carl Azevedo, Santa Cruz; Manuel and Tony Azevedo, Modesto; Lt. Avila Augustine 700618 np Graveside Service Held for Baby Boy; Augustine Avila, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Ange1 Avila of Westley, was buried yesterday, Wednesday, a graveside service in Patterson District Cemetery. The baby died in a Modesto hospital Sunday 28 hours after birth. He also is survived by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lupe Garza of Westley. Avila Edward 700924 np Edward Avi1a Meets Death in Calexico; A requiem mass was celebrated yesterday, Wednesday, morning in Sacred Heart Church, Turlock, for Edward Avila, 65, who died Saturday in Calexico after a long illness. Interment was in Turlock Memorial Park. Mr. Avila is the brother of Rudy Avila of Patterson. Born in Mexico, Mr. Avila came to California in 1912 and to Turlock in the early 1930 s. At the time of his death he owned a trucking business in Turlock, Patterson, Brawley and Arizona. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Felicitaf Avila of Calexico; six daughters, the Mmes. Benson Lee O 700827 np Mrs. Benson Dies At 72 After Illness; Funeral services for Mrs. Lee Ola Benson, 72, were held Friday following her death Wednesday in a local hospital after a short illness. She was interred in Jasper, Alabama following services Monday, A native of Alabama, Mrs. Benson had lived in Patterson for 16 years. She is survived by four sons, Iman, Alabama; Joe, Modesto; Phil and Ocie Benson of Patterson; and six daughters, Mrs. Lovella Crump, Alabama; Mrs. Bea English, Mrs. Andelone, Le Liur and Mrs. Lou Gartin of Patterson, Bobbie Coffee, Modesto and Jerlene Brown of Florida. Borba Tony 700129 p1 Area Dairyman Dies Here; Services were held January 23 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Turlock, for Mr. Tony Borba, 78, of Crows Landing Road, Turlock, who died January 21 in a Patterson hospital after a long illness. Interment was in Turlock Cemetery. Born in San Jose, Mr. Borba moved 45 years ago to the Turlock area where he was engaged in the dairy business until four months ago when his health forced him to retire. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Borba, one son, Lawrence Borba, and a daughter, Mrs. Madaline Mendes, all of Turlock; two step-daughters, Mrs. Rose Coelho of Ceres and Mrs. Margaret Morris of El Sobrante; one brother, Mr. Bill Barbe, and one, sister, Mrs. Margaret Reynolds, both of San Jose; 12 grandchildren, one of whom is serving with the U.S. Army in Vietnam, and 13 great grandchildren. Bowen Lee Austin 700507 np Funeral Rites in San Jose Funeral services were held Monday at the Darling Fisher Chapel in San Jose for Lee Austin Bowen, 47, of Livermore who died of an apparent heart attack while working a sluice from an old magnesite mine a half mile east of the Del Puerto Canyon Road April 29. Bowen suddenly collapsed while he and his wife, Dorothy, both geological miners, were operating the mining equipment. Resuscitation attempts were made by the Patterson Fire Department at the scene about 30 miles west of here, but he was dead on arrival at Del Puerto Hospital. Brambila, 40, of 730 Sequoia Avenue, who died Friday in a Modesto Hospital. Burial was in the Tracy cemetery. Born in California, Mrs. Brambila had lived in this area for 17 years. Butts Mabel O 700312 np Mrs. Butts to be Buried Friday; Services will be held tomorrow, Friday, at 2 p.m. in Evans Funeral Chapel for Mrs. Mabel Olive Butts, 81, who died at a local hospital Tuesday. Mrs. Cardoza was well known in Patterson as she often visited at the home of her brother-in-law and sister over the years. Born in Castroville, she lived 57 years in Manteca. Besides her sister, she is survived by two sons, Ernest Cardoza of Manteca and Jack Cardoza of Modesto; two daughters, Mrs. Emil Cabral and Mrs. Art Harbrough, both of Manteca; five brothers , A J., Peter, Manuel and Frank Rose of San Francisco and C.J. Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery, A farm laborer, Chavez had lived in California for 12 years, the last five months in the San Joaquin Valley. Christensen Walter M 700205 np Attend Rites in Salinas; Mrs. Elizabeth Lemcke, Mr. and Mrs. Americo Dompe and Mrs. Hazel Millen of Patterson and Carter Harrision of Modesto, formerly of Patterson attended the Friday funeral of Walter M. Christensen in St. Ansgar s Lutheran Church in Salinas. He died February 3. Mr. Christensen was the husband of the former Mrs. Dorothy Thompson Patterson of Patterson. Interment was in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Salinas. A native of Santa Cruz, Mr. Christensen attended school in Salinas, and was engaged in farming in that area. He was a partner in Christensen Brothers of growing and shipping operations, and was a member from childhood from which he was buried. He also was president of St. Ansgar s Church Council at the time its new building was constructed. The Salinas man was known in San Joaquin Valley as he was active in farming organizations and interested in duck hunting. He married Mrs. Patterson January 26, 1962. At the time of his death, they were staying in their Pebble Beach home while he recuperated from surgery. He leaves, besides his wife, a son, Gerald; a daughter, Mrs. Elaine Teague; two brothers, Harold and Andrew Christensen and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Mortensen and Mrs. Minnie Rhodes and a grandson. Cox Mabel 700813 np Westley Pioneer Buried Tuesday; Private funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Franklin and Downs Funeral Home in Modesto for Miss Mabel Cox of Westley. She died Sunday in a Modesto hospital at the age of 87. Miss Cox was a member of a pioneer family. Her parents bought and settled on land near Grayson, since known as the Cox home ranch, in 1877. At that time, Grayson was a thriving San Joaquin River shipping point where large cargoes of barley and wheat were loaded on steamers for shipment to Stockton and on to world ports. Her father was a grain farmer, as were her three brothers. Her three nephews are currently engaged in farming and ranching in the same area. Miss Cox s main interests were riding her horses and gardening. Preceding her in death were her brothers, William W., Frank A., and John D. Cox and her sister, Sadie Cox. She survived by seven nieces and three nephews and their families. Her nieces are; Mrs Marvin Heckendorf of Modesto, Mrs. John Funk of Berkeley, Mrs Elizabeth Spyra of San Francisco, Mrs. William Thomas of Pasadena, Mrs. Rovert Chatton of Berkeley, Mrs. Frances Mallory of Fresno, and Mrs. Brice Draper of Patterson. Her nephews, all of Westley, are: William Stanley Cox, John Stewart Cox and John Dunlap Cox. She was a member of the Federated Church of Patterson, and Rev. Harold Blakely officiated at the funeral service. Committal was in the family plot in the Modesto Citizens Cemetery. Crooks David A 700709 np David Crooks Dies Wednesday; David Allan Crooks, 28, of 851 Almond Ave. died early Wednesday morning as a result of brain injuries he suffered in a June 27 auto accident. Crooks car ran off the road hitting a land-plane. The California Highway Patrol has been unable to determine the cause of the accident. Funeral services will be held Saturday at the Evans Funeral Chapel at 10 a.m. Internment will be in the Patterson District Cemetery. Crooks is survived by his wife, Judy Juanita Crooks, two sons, Kevin and John; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Crooks of Patterson and the following brothers and sisters; Barbara Ana Brown of Santa Anna, Ronald Lee and Charles Payne Crooks of Modesto and James Porter Crooks of Patterson. Crow Gertrude M 701231 np Services Set For Mrs. Crow; Services will be held today, Wednesday, at 2 p.m. at Evans & Funeral Chapel for Mrs. Gertrude Munson Crow, of 18443 Crows Landing Road, Crows Landing, who died early Monday morning in a local hospital after a short illness. Interment will be in Park View Cemetery, Stockton. Widow of the late Roy F. Crow, a member of the pioneer Crow family which originally settled Crows Landing, Mrs. Crow was a native of Turlock, but had lived in the Crows Landing area 67 years. She is survived by a brother, William M. Munson of Ventura who had been visiting with her during the holiday. Currier Samuel 700521 np Mr. Currier Meets Death in Newman Graveside services were held Friday in Salinas for Mr. Samuel Currier, 85, who died May 13 at a rest home in Newman. He was a former longtime resident of Crows. Landing. Evans-Kriger Funeral Chapel in Newman was in charge of arrangements. Dambrosia Maria 700212 np Grandmother of De Lashes Dies at 101 in Los Banos; Mrs. Joaquin DeLash and her sister, Mrs. Louise DeLash recently attended the funeral of their grandmother, Mrs. Maria Dambrosia, aged 101, who died January 31 after a brief illness resulting from complications arising out of a broken hip at a rest home in Los Banos. Mrs. DeLash and the families of both women accompanied them. A rosary was said at Whitehurst Chapel the evening of February 2, and a requiem mass celebrated at St. Joseph s Church February 3. Interment was in Los Banos Cemetery. A native of Italy where she was married, she came to Los Banos in 1906 with her husband who ran a dairy in that area until he died in 1936. Mrs. Dambrosia continued on at the ranch with her son, Ben Dambrosia, and his family and friends gathered there on her 100 birthday when she received congratulations from both President Lyndon Johnson and Governor Ronald Reagan. She is survived by two sons, the aforementioned Ben and Frank Dambrosia, both of Los Banos; eight grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren, one of whom was born on the day of her death. Delphia Elwyn F 700730 np Elwyn Delphia Buried Here Wednesday; Services were held yesterday, Wednesday, at Evans Funeral Chapel for Elwyn Floyd Delphia, 56, who died Sunday as the result of a tractor accident while fighting fire in Fall Canyon. Rev. Harold Blakley conducted the rites, and burial was in Patterson District Cemetery. Born in Vernalis, Delphia lived in this area all his life. He was equipment superintendent for the John Delphia Construction Co. when he died, having worked for the firm for almost 10 years. He was a member of the Patterson Masonic Lodge, of the 20-30 Club during its existence here, and a past member of the Patterson Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Delphia of North Fourth Street; one son, Clark Delphia of Orofino, Ida.; two daughters, Mrs., Joan Wah of Walnut Creek and Mrs. Marlene Podesto of Modesto, and six grandchildren. Dominguez Domingo 700528 np Rancher Dies of Massive Hemorrhaging A requiem mass was held at 10 a.m. yesterday, Wednesday, in Evans Funeral Chapel for Domingo Dominguez, 73, of 230 South Fourth Street, who died in a Modesto hospital Saturday as a result of injuries incurred in an accident happening two hours earlier. Burial will be in the Patterson District Cemetery. A autopsy determined that death was due to massive internal hemorrhaging. Friends gathered Tuesday evening in the Evans Chapel to recite the rosary. A native of Spain, Domingues had lived here 43 years. He was a retired sheep rancher and had no relatives. The California Highway Patrolmen said Dominguez car struck the rear of a car driven by Shelby W. Humphrey, 37, 517 W. Hatch Road, Modesto. Both vehicles were northbound on Geer Road, they said. Dow John 700618 np Badly Decomposed Body Found in Canyon; The body of a badly decomposed man was found at the bottom of a ravine a mile east of Frank Raines Park on Sunday and Stanislaus County Sheriff's officers are still examining it to make an identification. Mr. and Mrs. Vince Mancino of San Jose, who lease the Slack Ranch, discovered the body while they were working cattle. Mancino told deputies he had worked cattle at least 20 times in the vicinity and had not seen the body. A sheriffs officer said it could not be seen from the roadway above. The man was clothed with jeans, short-sleeved shirt and heavy walking boots. He had a head band binding, long curly hair, a watch band, a zodiac sing on a chain and an Army ring. The body was taken to Evans Funeral Chapel in Patterson and later transferred to Modesto. Authorities are trying to determine if the death occurred during a gathering of hippies there during the Washington's Birthday weekend, when some 50 carloads of young people were in the area. Burial was in Patterson District Cemetery. Born in Mexico, Mrs. Esquivel lived in this area 19 years. She is survived by her widow, Lewis G. Esquivel of Crows Landing; four sons, Joe of Newman, Juan of Crows Landing; Louie of Patterson and Jose Esquivel of Turlock, and a daughter, Mrs. Rebecc Palicios of Crows Landing. Farrier Marthella 700901 np Mrs. L. Farrier Dies in Riverside; Funeral services were held Monday in Riverside for Mrs. Marthella "Marty" Farrier, 43, who died August 27 in Riverside after a long illness. She is survived by her widower, Jarred Farrier of Riverside; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. Edward H. Freidel, Sr., of Patterson; a brother, Edward H. Fay Leo A 701224 np Leo Fay Once of Westley Dies in Hospital; Funeral services were held Friday in Thousand Oaks for Leo S. Fay who died December 16 in a hospital there after a brief illness. A native of Westley, he attended grammar school in Grayson and high school in Patterson where he was a member of the 1928 Patterson High School graduating class. For the past 34 years, he had been employed by the Shell Oil Co., living in Simi, Ventura County, with his wife, Dorothy. Besides Mrs. Fay, he is survived by a brother, Fergus Fay, and a sister, Miss Cecelia Fay, at the family home near Westley. Ferry Charles J 700409 np Ferry Services Friday; Charlie J. Ferry, 40, 2818 Olive Avenue, died Tuesday of injuries suffered when be was pinned under a car in front of his home at 2818 Olive Avenue. The motor of the car was last heard at approximately 12:30 p.m. and the time of death is estimated to be around 1:30. At approximately 2:45 he was discovered by Eddie Costa of Newman. Mr. Ferry was taken via ambulance to Del Puerto hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival. He was employed for 18 years by the Golden Valley Creamery in Newman and he was well knewn in the community and a native of Patterson. He is survived by his wife, Clarice, and three children, Mrs. Robert Krause, Patterson and Charlene and Chucky, and one grandchild. His sister, Mrs. Al Scheuber, and his mother, Mrs. Tony Silva, also are Patterson residents. A rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. tonight in Evans Chapel. Services will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Sacred Heart church, and interment will be at the Patterson District Cemetery. Mr. Ferry was a member of Hanna Boys in Sonora. Mrs. Ferry said some donations in honor of his, memory would be welcomed there. All of the vehicles were eastbound and had just gone under interstate 5 overpass when Fithian made a left turn and was struck by Joaquin Bettencourt, 65, of Crows Landing. The California Highway Patrol officers reported that Fithian apparently was attempting to turn off on the ditch bank ahead of Bettencourt. Fithian was dead on arrival at the Del Puerto Hospital. Freitas Maria V 700205 np Mrs. Freitas Dies at 91; A requiem mass will be said at 10 o clock this morning in Sacred Heart Church for Mrs. Maria V. Freitas, 91, who died Tuesday in a local hospital. Furtado Guilherme A 700625 np Services for Furtado; A 9:30 am, requiem mass will be held in Sacred Heart Church, Hollister, this morning, Thursday, for Guitherme A. Furtado, 61, who was killed in a four car auto accident north of Hollister Sunday at 6:45 p.m. while on the-way to that city. Interment will be in Patterson District Cemetery about noon. Mrs. Maria B. Furtado, wife of the deceased, who also was in the car at the time of the accident, was-seriously inured and was taken to Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital in Hollister for treatment. Betty Martin, 20, a Fresno girl riding in one of the other cars involved, was critically injured, and died on arrival at the same hospital. Three Watsonville girls, who had been visiting with the Furtados in Patterson, were riding in the car also and escaped Injury. Furtado leaves a step-daughter, Mrs. Olivia Silveira of Patterson; three daughters, Mrs. Mary Fernandes of La Canada; Mrs. Deolinda Azevedo of Brazil, and Mrs. Carmina Fullerton of Cupertino; a son, Manuel S. The family moved in 1907 to the Emerald Station of the Standard Oil Pipeline, site on which the town of Patterson was founded in 1909. He retired from his position there as an engineer in 1932 and returned with his wife to Newman where he died in 1945. Dead are Ben Jacobsen, 75, and Victor Jacobsen, 65, of 224 Sperry Road. The brothers were on their way to an old mine they owned when their car left the roadway which twists alongside the Yuba River. His brother s watch was stopped at about 11 a.m. and this is the time the coroner's office has set for the time of death. Joaquin Mathew J 700402 np Del Puerto Body Identified; The body of a young man found in a ravine to Del Puerto Canyon has been identified as that of Mathew Joseph Joaquin, 21, of Pittsburg. The cause of death is still unknown, Stanislaus County Sheriff's officers said identification was made through fingerprints. The body was found by Mr. and Mrs. Vince Macino of San Jose white they were working cattle in the area. Joaquin had several Modesto addresses after leaving Pittsburg. Sheriff's officers said he had been in the canyon along with about 50 carloads of hippies on the Washington s Birthday holiday weekend. Found with the body was a plastic sack containing about 30 barbiturate pills. The body was so badly decomposed that an autopsy could not show the cause of death. The skull and rib cage were intact and there was no other evidence of foul play. Identification was made at the Federal Bureau of investigation laboratory in Washington, D.C. Joaquin had been arrested several times in the Pittsburg area for being in possession of alcohol while a minor. Wearing jeans, a wide black belt, a khaki shirt, a headband, a chain with a zodiac sign, a wide watch band and heavy walking shoes, the body was found a mile east of Frank Rains Park. Leal John A Rev 700129 np Founder of Sacred Heart Dies in Tennessee Home; The Rev. John A. Leal, pastor emeritus of St. Joseph s Church in Mission San Jose, who, in1914, established Sacred Heart Parish in Patterson, died January 18 at the Alexian Brothers Rest Home, Signal Mountain, Tennessee, where he had been living in retirement. He was 87. A rosary was said for him in the evening of January 21 in St. Joseph's Church at Mission San Jose, and the following morning a con celebrated mass was conducted in the same church. Interment followed in Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, Hayward. The fist assignment of Father Leal in this area was to Newman parish in 1908 which, at that time, included Newman, Gustine, Crows Landing and Patterson. He conducted a building program in Newman during which the present parish house was constructed and an addition made to the existing church, and in 1912 he supervised the building of Holy Ghost Church in Gustine which was rebuilt last year. After founding the parish in Patterson in 1914, he went to Niles where he also established a parish and developed a building program. In 1918 he proceeded to Mission San Jose w/here he restored with the help of a $35,000 grant from the Hearst Foundation, carrying on the work during his 36 years as pastor of St. Joseph s Church there. When retiring in 1954, the pioneer churchman was named pastor emeritus, and three years later was honored at a reception at Five Wounds Church in the area. One thousand former parishioners attended. In 1959 he became a resident of Signal Mountain, returning to this part of the country in 1963 to visit old friends in the parishes he had served. He was a native of Madlena, the Azores. Menezes Mary B 700115 np Sunday Crash Has One Dead; A Sunday afternoon crash caused the death of a Newman woman Mrs. Mary B. Menezes, 41. She was killed when the car driven by her daughter, Kathleen Menezes, 19, broke off a power pole and turned over. According to the report made by investigating officers of the California Highway Patrol, the car lost traction on the rain slick road at a curve when the brakes were applied on the Crows Landing Road near Morrison Road close to Newman. Mrs. Morrison was pronounced dead at the scene. Her daughter was taken to the Del Puerto Hospital in satisfactory condition. Mrs. Menezes was buried at the Hills Ferry Cemetery in Newman Wednesday morning after a 10 o clock mass. She had at first been brought to the Evans Funeral Chapel in Patterson but was transferred to the Evans-Kreiger Chapel in Newman. Her daughter, who was not seriously injured in the crash, was released Tuesday morning from the Del Puerto Hospital in fair condition. It is reported that the accident caused a loss of electrical power to homes in South Patterson from approximately 2:45 to 3:15 in the afternoon. Mrs. Orr was born in Missouri. Pastoris Paul D 700205 p1 Accidents Cause Tragedy; A rash of serious accidents occurred in Patterson this past week. The most serious took the lives of four persons when a 1969 Ford pickup truck and a 1964 Plymouth sedan met in a head - on collision. The tragedy took place at 6:40 p.m. Friday evening on Highway 33 north of Patterson between Del Puerto Creek bridge and Valley Gold Inc. fruit drying plant. Those who lost their lives were Magdaleno S. Garcia, 36, 312 South Third St., driver of the pickup which reportedly crossed the center line for no established reason to meet the sedan driven by James Jester,43, of 99 Harbor Drive West, Pittsburgh, California. Jester s wife, Opal, 33, of the same address and Paul D. Pastoris, 46, of Concord, California, also were killed. All the fatalities were taken to Evans Chapel. There have as yet been no autopsy reports or findings from laboratory tests. Mr. Garcia was the father of five chi1dren, one of whom is married, with four under the care of their uncle, Eulalio Segoviano. Pearson James O 701203 np Centenarian Meets Death; Services were held Monday in Evans Funeral Home for James Olaf Pearson, 100, who died Thanksgiving Day at Lake Tahoe where he had gone to celebrate the holiday with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Fleming of 274 K Street. Graveside services, will be held in Osceola, Neb, today, Wednesday. Born October 2, 1870, in Bohusland, province of Skona, Sweden, Mr. Pearson came to Lincoln, Neb., as a boy with his mother, brothers and sisters. He began farming for himself in Nebraska when he was 21, became a United States citizen in 1902 and married Miss Anna S. Nelson in 1904. Five of their six daughters were born in this state. Mr. Pearson took his family to Portland, Ore., for a time where he went into real estate, and where the last daughter joined the family. Before he retired at 72 at his old home in Oscololo, Neb., he had acquired 1,000 acres of farm land in that state, Oregon and Colorado. After the death of his wife in 1962, he moved to Patterson to live with the Flemings. The well known retired rancher celebrated his 100th birthday in October as a temporary patient in the Extended Care Wing of Del Puerto Hospital where he was honored by two parties, one given by hospital friends and the other by his family. The latter gathering drew relatives from all over the West to extend their congratulations. Mr. Pearson also received a telegram to mark the occasion from President and Mrs. Nixon and others from various governmental dignitaries. He is survived by five other daughters, the Mmes. Alfred De Camara of Aptos; Clement J. Marak, Stromberg, Nebraska; W. A. Robertson, Portland, Oregon; E. T. Engler, Belmont and Eugene L. Petz, father of Nolan Petz Vernalis, and David of Tracy succumbed Sunday December 28 in a Modesto hospital. Funeral services for the 76 year old Petz were conducted Tuesday December 30, in the chapel of the Franklin and Downs Funeral Home, with burial in Lakewood Memorial Park. Richardson Perry R 700604 np Civilian Pilot Dies in Crash in Mountains; Funeral services were held recently in the Lisle Funeral Home, Fresno, for Perry Royce Richardson, 31, formerly of Patterson, who was killed May 11 when the light plane he was piloting crashed in the Sierras. Mr. Richardson was the son of Reginald F. Richardson of Fresno, now an instructor at Clovis High School and formerly a teacher here, and Mrs. Richardson. Two other men also died in the plane. All three, employees of the Gallo Glass Co. in Modesto were en route from Modesto to South Lake Tahoe when the accident occurred. Richardson was a licensed private pilot and only a few hours away from qualifying for his commercial license. The younger Richardson was born in Lemoure, N.D., and moved with his family to the Pacific Northwest before coming to California in 1955. From 1951 to 1961 he served with the U.S. Army doing a tour of duty in Germany as a missile technician. After returning to Fresno, he was married. Survivors are his parents; widow; Mrs. Judith Richardson; two sons, David and Douglas; two daughters, Denise and Deborah; two brothers, Bruce Richardson of Fresno and Capt. Saavedra Angel Pfc 700402 p1 Loses Life Car Hits Rail; An eighteen year old Patterson boy, Pfc. Angel Saavedra, died in a motor accident early Sunday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Mariano Saavadra. 2809 East Las Palmas, are his parents. Young Saavedea, scheduled to report Sunday to Oakland Army Training Center to train for over seas duty, was driving a 1966 Buick station wagon, westbound from Turlock. He presumably fell asleep at the wheel and his car veered to the left side of the San Joaquin River bridge, to strike the guard rail which entered the car near the left front door and caused his death. He was taken to Del Puerto hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Other members of his family are brothers Mariano Jr. of Pleasanton, Manuel, Daniel, Larry, David and Alex, all of Patterson and three sisters, Mrs. Ruth Lopez of San Jose, Victoria and Rebecca of Patterson. He lived in Patterson approximately from 1920 to 1932. He is considered to be one of the most outstanding athletes ever to attend Patterson High School. Outstanding as a baseball catcher, basketball forward and football fullback, he also was instrumental in Patterson High School s winning the Central California Basketball Championship in 1926 when the school consisted only of 100 students. The former Patterson man was a long-time employee of the Shell Oil Company and, in recent years, was an engineer in the Bakersfield area. Schultz Billie 700319 np Fire Claims Boy; Billie Schultz died at 9:50Tuesday night in Scenic General Hospital in Modesto. Billie, the five year old son of Mr. And Mrs. Vernon Schultz, was fatally burned late Tuesday afternoon in a fire at the rear of the Schultz' home at 230 L Street. The cause of the fire is not yet determined, but it is believed that he was playing with matches and that he ignited a couch and a chair stored behind the garage. It is rumored the area along the fence had been sprayed, but Patterson Fire Chief Henry Schmidt was not able to complete his investigation by press time and could not make an official statement. Patterson volunteer firemen answered the 5:15 pm alarm and found the child lying between the board fence and garage where he was trapped. The Patterson ambulance was called, but it had been dispatched to Laird Park Officer martin Zaragosa, Mrs. Schultz and Fireman Dick Shannon, Joe martin and Assistant fire Chief bob Thorkelson took the child in the patrol to Del Puerto Hospital where he was treated in the emergency room. Later he was taken in the Patterson Ambulance to Scenic General Hospital. Services will be held Friday at 2pm at Evans Funeral Chapel and interment will be in Patterson district Cemetery. Silva Antonio 700618 np Patterson Man Dies in Vietnam; Army Spec. 4 Antonio Silva, 21, died in Vietnam on June 4 as a result of a wound received the day before. Silva is the fourth man from the Patterson area to lose his life to the Asian conflict. Silva is the son of Mrs. Guadalupe B. Gonzales of 666 Olive Ave. He had been in Vietnam six mouths. A native of San Benito, Texas, he lived to Patterson a year before entering the Army. Besides his mother, Silva leaves a brother, David Silva. The body is being taken to San Benito, Texas, for funeral services. The first Patterson casualty of the war was Charles R. Bob Mears. 21, Spec. 4. He died June of 1967. The second death was that of Army Specialist Demetrius L. Hernadez,23, in October of 1967. The third death was in January, 1968 when Sergeant Joseph A. C. Silveira, 20 was killed. Silva, 77, who died last Thursday in a local hospital after a short illness. Mr. Silva was a retired farmer. He was born in San Juan Bautista and lived at 867 Olive Ave. here for 25 years. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mary C. Lopes Silva of Patterson; three daughters, Miss Dolores Silva of Orinda and Miss Barbara Silva of Modesto and Mrs. Madeline Mattos of Crows Landing; a brother, John V. Soares Frank M 700730 np John Soares Brother Dies; A requiem mass was held Wednesday morning at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Gustine, for Frank M. Snares, 76, brother of Mr. John Soares of Patterson. He collapsed and died suddenly Sunday morning before the same Holy Ghost Church. Interment was in Hills Ferry Cemetery in Newman. A native of Pico, the Azores, he had operated the Snares Market in Gustine for more than 50 years. Tabar Canuto 700219 np Father of Local Man Dies in South; Services were held Friday at St; Peter s Church in Los Angeles for Canuto Tabar, Sr., 88, father of Natz Tabar of Westley and Ben Tabar of Crows Landing. Burial was in the Mausoleum of Calvary Cemetery in the southern city. Mr. Taher died February 9 in his South Gate home after a lengthy illness. Walker Robin R 700924 np 22 Month Old Girl Loses Life. in Aqueduct Here; Tragedy struck late Monday when little Robin Rebecca Walker, 22 month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Walker of Sperry Ave., wandered away from her home and fell into the California Aqueduct. She was found in the water only a few feet from where she apparently fell from a bridge spanning the aqueduct. Up until that time a frantic search of the area had been made by friends and neighbors. Her mother said she had heard Robin playing in the yard, and missed her when she checked again about five m1nutes later. It was then about 3:50 p.m. A sheriff s deputy arrived a few minutes later, and friends and neighbors were already searching for the tot who had apparently wandered about 150 yards west of the home through an orchard before coming to the aqueduct. Walters Margaret 700122 np Mrs. Walters Dies at Motel; Cremation has been held in Lakewood Memorial Park, Empire, for Mrs. Margaret Walters, 63, who was found dead of naturel causes Friday in her Mission Motel apartment by her husband. Walters, and a step-son, Robert Dean Crist of Modesto. Watson Albert J Maj 701224 np ‘Village Founder Dies in Hillsborough Home; Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church of San Mateo yesterday, Tuesday, for Major Albert J. Watson, founder of El Solyo Village, who died Friday at his Hillsborough home. He was 86. Watson was born in Dundee, Scotland, and came to the United States at the age of 23 to work as an accountant. He became a naturalized citizen to 1915 and soon after entered the U.S. Army to fight as an officer in the 89th Division during World War I. He came to San Francisco in 1919 as a senior partner to the accounting firm of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co., making his home in Hillsborough. In 1946, when he retired, he and his wife, Lesley, established the charitable Lesley Foundation, which owns and operates several nonprofit senior citizen residence buildings including Park Towers and Pilgrim Plaza in San Mateo, Ocean View Plaza in Half Moon Bay and El Solyo Village in Patterson. Mrs Watson died to 1967. Watson was a president of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants, a life member of the American Institute of Accountants and a chartered accountant of Great Britain. He also was president of the El Solyo Ranch Co., and the Fairbanks Gold Dredging Co., a director of Morris Plan of California and the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, and a trustee of Mackinac College in Michigan and the Congregational Church of San Mateo. He also served as commander of American Legion Post N. 82. He is survived by three suns, Albert Watson Jr. of Los Angeles, David F. Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Pennsylvania, Mr. Wise had lived in Stanislaus County for 16 years and owned and operated the J & M Bar in Crows Landing for 13 years. He was a veteran of World War I. His wife, Mrs. Mary Cook Wise of Crows Landing, survives him. Burial was in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Montana, she was a longtime Patterson resident, having lived most recently at El Solyo Village. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Jacquelon Smithwick of Cotati, and one grandchild.
