Mechanic Dies On Arrival; Billy Frank Abbott, 37, of Fresno collapsed on Las Palmas Ave. Monday when stepping from
the cab of a repair truck he had driven to Patterson to tow home another truck owned by his firm which had broken down
on that street. Abbott, a company mechanic, was pronounced dead on arrival at Del Puerto Hospital. The funeral will be
held tomorrow, Friday, in Clovis.  Evans Funeral Chapel handled the arrangements.

Alvin Adams Dies at Home After Illness; Tuesday private funeral rites were conducted for Alvin Benjamin Adams, 58, in
Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel, Modesto, and burial was in Modesto Cemetery.  Mr. Adams died Sunday in his Patterson
home after a long illness. Born in El Paso, Texas, he had lived in Patterson 35 years.  He was a vending machine
manufacturer and a member of the Christian Science Church. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ella Mae Adams of 111
North Seventh Street, a daughter, Mrs. Carol Amen  of Modesto, a son, Stephen Adams of San Francisco, and two
grandchildren.

Forrest Ament Dies in Hospital after Illness; Funeral services were held Monday at Evans Funeral Chapel for Forrest
Leland Ament, 60, who died Friday in a local hospital after a long illness.  Burial was in Patterson District Cemetery.
A native of Sugar City, Colorado, Mr. Ament had lived here for seven years.  He was a retired hod carrier. He is survived
by his widow, Mrs. Pauline Ament of 525 F Street; a son, Clint Ament of El Monte; two daughters, Mrs. Frostene
Cannon of Azusa, and Miss Sandra Lee Ament of El Monte; three stepsons, Robert, Jack and Charles Brady, all of
Ventura, and a stepdaughter, Bea Lynn Ament of Bakersfield. Also surviving him are two brothers, Glenn Ament of
Sebastopol and Clifford Ament of Colorado; two sisters, Mrs. Uirgal Benson and Iva Youngblood, both of Colorado and
six grandchildren.

Services Held Here Monday; A requiem mass was held Monday at Sacred Heart Church for Geatana Aragona, 73, of
15412 First Street, who died October 21 in a local hospital after a long illness. Burial was in Patterson District Cemetery.
A native of Italy, he had lived in Patterson for 38 years. He was a retired creamery employee and a member of the Sons of
Italy in Los Banos. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Mary Aragona of Patterson, one son, Carnelo Aragona of Argentina; a
daughter, Mrs. Rose B. Cozzitorto of San Jose; two stepsons, Mike John Imperatrice of Los Banos and James Imperatrice
of Fresno; two sisters and three brothers in Argentina and Italy, and nine grandchildren.

Mrs. Barns Meets Her Death in Accident; Mrs. Ruby Ellen Barnes, 80, of Tracy, formerly of Patterson, was pronounced
dead on arrival at Tracy Community Memorial Hospital Friday after being hit and run over by a car backing out of a
driveway in her city. Funeral services were held Monday at Hotchkiss Mortuary chapel in Tracy, and interment was in the
Tracy Cemetery. According to the Tracy Police Department, Mrs. Barnes had walked behind a car driven by Theodore
W. "Ted" Oliver, 70, when he was backing out of his driveway, and he had hit her knocking her down under the car.
A native of Ontario, Canada, Mrs. Barnes came to Patterson with her husband and children when young, and raised her
children here.  She left in 1942 as a widow for Tracy where she made her home with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr.
and Mrs. Ray Swanigan. She is survived by three daughters besides Mrs. Swanigan, Mrs. Robert Kellogg of Tracy, Mrs.
William Peach of Citrus Heights and Mrs. Frank Nisson of Santa Cruz; three sons, Samuel Barnes of Alberta, Canada,
Glen Barnes of Tucson, Ariz., and Allen Barnes of Elk Creek.  She also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Edith Howarth, Mrs.
Julia Woods and Mrs. Merta Maglinski, all of Saskatoon, Canada; 13 grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.

Mrs. Bellani Dies Suddenly Buried Here; A requiem mass was said Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Mrs.
Margaret Bellani, 84, who died suddenly at her home, 22 North Filth Street, February 18.  Burial was in Patterson District
Cemetery. A native of Italy, Mrs. Bellani had lived in Patterson for 39 years. She is survived by her husband, Robert
Bellani, and one son, Americo Bellani, both of Patterson; five daughters, Mrs. Florence Berisch of Daly City, Mrs. Olga
Rodriquez of San Jose, Mrs. Inez Davis of Cotati; Mrs. Palma Steffen of San Francisco and Mrs. Lea Wingard of
Minnesota; 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Bertolero Dies Suddenly in Salida Home; A chapel service was held Monday at Franklin & Downs Funeral Home in
Modesto for Mrs. Amelia E. Bertolero, 56, who died suddenly in Salida Friday.  A private committal followed in
Lakewood Memorial Park. Mrs. Bertolero was the twin sister of Mrs. Alma Schmidt of Patterson.  A native of Newman,
she came to Patterson when she was five years old.  She was graduated from local schools and lived here until her
marriage 35 years ago.  She was a member of the Salida Congregational Church and the Salida Bethany Circle. Survivors,
besides her sister, are her widower, Louis Bertolero of Salida; two sons, Henry Bertolero of Modesto and LeRoy
Bertolero of Winters; a daughter, Mrs. Marlene Stambaugh of Orange County; her mother, Mrs. Emma Bontadelli of
Saratoga, and six grandchildren.

Mrs. Bettes Dies in Hospital in Modesto; Funeral services were held Friday at Evans Funeral Chapel for Mrs. Gladas
Loraine Bettes, 60, who died October 7 in a Modesto hospital.  Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of
Oklahoma, she had lived here 34 years. She a survived by her widower, Harry Bettes at 315 South Fifth Street; a son,
Robert Charles Bettes in the U.S. Navy; a daughter, Mrs. Jackie Marie Stanley; her mother, Mrs. Charles C. Davis; a
sister, Mrs. Fern Wilson, and a brother, Delmar C. Lowery, all of Texas; six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Bishop Arthur A  710114 np
Arthur Bishop Dies in Hospital in Los Angeles; Funeral services for Arthur A. Bishop, 74, were held Tuesday in Los
Angeles where he also was buried.  He died Saturday in St. Vincent s Hospital in that city. He leaves his wife, Betty
Bishop, of Los Angeles. His parents, William and Martha Bishop, came to Patterson in 1910, he as an employee of
Standard Oil Company.  She was a nurse here for many years accompanying the doctor on his house calls before
Patterson had a hospital.  Also, for many years, she acted as Mrs. Santa Claus at community Christmas parties for
children. Arthur Bishop left Patterson after finishing school here, but has been back and forth to town over the years
keeping in touch with his old friends.  He was a veteran of World War I, and manufacturer of the Trimmer Edge lawn
mower.

Bronzan Grace E 710624 np
Former Pattersonite Buried in San Jose; Mrs. Grace Eleanor Bronzan, 62, who was raised in Patterson and is a graduate
of Patterson High School, died June 17 in a San Jose Hospital after a long illness.  Funeral services were conducted June
19 at Oak Hill Mortuary s Chapel of Roses.  Interment was in Oak Hill Memorial Park. Mrs. Bonzan was born in
Chicago, Ill., and lived with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Olson of Orange Avenue, here during her growing years.
She earned her degrees at the University of California, Berkeley, and Santa Barbara before becoming a home economics
teacher. Mrs. Bronzan was a teacher in the Cambrian Elementary School District from 1953 through 1965 when she
retired. Surviving Mrs.Bronzan are her daughter, Sharon Bronzan and her son, Robert A. Bronzan, both of Eugene, Ore.;
her brother, Kenneth Olson, and her mother, Mrs. Tulle Olson, both of Turlock.

John W. Brown Dies at Home in El. Solyo; Services were held yesterday, Wednesday, in the Sunset Ridge Cemetery,
Kenosha,Wis., for John William Brown, 75, who died Saturday at his home in El Solyo Village. A native of Illinois, he
had lived in Stanislaus County for 11 years, the past two in Patterson. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth
Meatink of Kenosha;  four sons, Ray Charles and Carl Brown of Kenosha and Donald Brown of Portland, Ore; a sister,
Mrs. Peter Christiansen of Kenosha; 15 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.

Stocktonite Buried Here Tuesday; Graveside services ware held for Mrs. Tena Pagel Bumpus, 86, aunt of Mrs. M.W.
Yale of Patterson, Thursday in Patterson District Cemetery.  Rev. Harold F. Blakley delivered the eulogy. Mrs. Bumpus
died it her home in Stockton December 28.  She was a native of Holton, Kan. Other survivors are: Two grandchildren,
Patricia and William Bumpus of Stockton; a brother, Theodore Pagel of Kansas; eight nieces, Margareta Dean and
Lucille Kibbe of Hayward, Marie Rooney of Oshland, Carolyn Andler of Kansas City, Mo., and Edith, Louise, Anna and
Alice Pagel of Iowa, and eight nephews, Joseph, Leon and Paul Pegel of Vancouver, Wash., D. H . Pagel of Netawaka,
Kan., and Carl, Henry, Harmon and Vernon Pagel of IowaMrs. Bumpus'.  Sire. Rumpus  husband, William Bumpus, and
son, Everett Bumpus, preceded her in death. Evana Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Gerado Calzada Dies in Hospital; A requiem mass was held Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church for Gerado T. Calzada, 70,
of Livingston Circle, Westley, who died Friday night in a local hospital after a short illness.  Burial was in Patterson
District Cemetery. A native of Mexico, Mr. Calzada has lived in Westley for six years. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs.
Petra Calzada of Westley, two sons, Emilio Calzada of Washington and Francisco Calzada of Westley, one daughter,
Mrs. Emma Montalbo of Westley; a brother, Lacaro Calzada of Mexico, and 14 grandchildren.

Manuel Cardoza to be Buried in Pacific Grove; Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, at 9:30 a.m. in the Paul
Mortuary in Pacific Grove for Manuel V. Cardoza, of Monterey, 73, who died Tuesday morning in a Monterey hospital.
Mr. Cardoza is the father of Mr. Manuel Cardoza of 629 North Third Street. Interment will be in Pacific Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Cardoza, who had been ill for approximately two weeks, also leaves his widow, Mrs. Maria Cardoza of Monterey,
one other son, Tony Cardoza of San Mateo; a daughter, Mrs. Betty Burbidge of San Caelos; five grandchildren and two
great grandchildren. Born in the Azores Islands, he lived in Patterson for 35 years leaving nine years ago.  He was a
retired rancher, a member of U.P.E.C. and Our Lady of Fatima in Los Banos and Pacific Grove.

Mrs. Carlson Dies in Hospital After Illness; Funeral services were held Wednesday morning in the Evangelical Covenant
Church for Mrs. Marie Charlotte Carlson, 60, who died Sunday morning at a local hospital alter a long illness.  Interment
was in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Chicago, she had lived in Patterson since 1921.  She was a graduate
nurse, having received her training at Emanuel Hospital in Turlock.  She had been a deaconess of the Evangelical
Covenant Church for many years, and had held a number of offices in the Covenant Women.  She also was a member of
the Patterson Garden Club. Survivors are her husband, Paul Carlson, at their 416 North Fourth Street home; two
daughters, Mrs. Marilyn Lyons and Mrs. Donna Schali, both of Patterson; two brothers, David Leaf of Crows Landing
and Arthur Leaf of Patterson, and four grandchildren. The family requests that any remembrances be made either to the
Evangelical Covenant Church or to the Stanislaus County Cancer Society.

Westley Man Dennis Carrier Buried Here; Funeral services were held Monday at Evans Funeral Chapel for Dennis Ray
Carrier, 77, of 8724 River Road, Westley, who died Friday in a local hospital.  Interment was in Patterson District
Cemetery. A native of Nebraska, Carrier lived in Westley for 44 years.  He was a retired employee of the West Stanislaus
Irrigation District. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lillian Carrier at home, and a sister, Mrs. Dora Longbrake of Nebraska.

Mrs. Casseri Dies up North, Area People Go; Mrs. Emma Acquistapace of 215 M Street and her daughter, Mrs. Manuel
Matoza of Gustine, are home from Everett, Wash., where they attended the funeral January 25 of the local woman s
daughter-in-law, Mrs. Robert Casseri, 51,who died suddenly January 21 while working in an Everett store. Services were
in an Everett funeral chapel, and burial in a cemetery in that city. Mrs. Casserl leaves her husband, a son and two
daughters.  Mr. Casseri, who was raised in Patterson, is with Standard Oil in Everett.  Mrs. Acquitapace and her daughter
flew north from San Francisco January 24, and returned January 27.

Once Lived Here, Rites in N.M.; News has reached Patterson of the death of Mrs. Gertrude Lindgren  Christianson, 57,
who once lived in Patterson, and who graduated from Patterson High School in 1932.  Her father once was a constable
here. She died March 23, and funeral services were held March 25 in the Berardinelli Mortuary, Santa Fe, N.M.
Interment was in Guaje Pine Cemetery there. Survivors are her husband Harold Christianson, three daughters, Gayle,
Patricia and Beverly, and one son, Paul.

Mrs. Conner Dies in Newman; Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Evans-Kreiger Funeral Chapel in
Gustine for Mrs. Sallie M. Conner, 87, who died Sunday morning in a Newman rest home.  Interment was in Hills Ferry
Cemetery, Newman.  She was the mother of Mrs. Nancy Parros of Patterson. A native of Fleming, Texas, Mrs. Conner
had lived in the Gustine area for 34 years. She is survived also by three sons, Bradley Conner of Stevinson, Elbert Conner
of Gustine, and James Conner of Davis; three other daughters, Mrs. Gladys Edwards and Mrs. Laverne Watkins of
Gustine and Mrs. Helen Bedford of Corona; 28 grandchildren, and 48 great grandchildren.

Albert Covello Dies at Home After Illness; A requiem mass was said Tuesday in Sacred Heart Church for Albert Covello,
52, who died Saturday afternoon in his home at 325 M Street alter a short illness.  Burial was in Patterson District
Cemetery. A native of Newman, he lived in Patterson for 44 years. He is survived by his father, Pasquale Covello, and
two brothers, James and Carl Covello, all of Patterson.

Mrs. Cover Dies in Modesto, Buried Here; Etta B. Cover,82, who had lived  in Patterson for 40 years before moving to
Modesto in 1946, was buried here in Patterson District Cemetery Wednesday.  The preliminary funeral service was in the
First Southern Baptist Church, and Evans Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. The former Patterson woman
died Sunday in a Modesto rest home.  She was a native of Indiana. Surviving her are her husband, John R. Cover of
Modesto; one son, Jack Rose of Modesto;  two daughters, Mrs. Anna Pinheiro of Kingsburg, and Mrs. Isabell Appleby of
Coburg, Ore.; a stepson, John R. Cover, Jr., of Las Vegas; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Mary Beth Loudermilk of Van Nuys; nine
grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Crone Victor N 711021 np
Services Held for Crone,  Williams After Accident; Services were held Wednesday for two Patterson men who were
killed instantly early last Saturday morning when their pick-up plunged off the Early Intake-Cherry Valley Road four
miles north of Buck Meadows. Killed were Victor Newell Crone, 64, and Benjamin Hough Williams, 70.  Crone, in
whose pickup they were riding was apparently the driver. Fog and a switchback curve were attributed by highway
patrolmen as the probable cause of the accident.  No skid marks were found.  Crone s body was found 400 feet down the
embankment under aluminum boat, and William s body was discovered 200 feet farther down. The pickup landed in the
north fork of the Tuolumne River, some 800 feet from where It left the roadway. An inquest was held early this week.
Services were held in Evans Funeral Chapel Wednesday morning, for Mr. Crone with burial in Jerseyville, Illinois.  He
was a native of that state, and had lived here 17 years, working as a self employed carpenter. He leaves a son, Robert Hall
Crone, and a daughter, Barbara Jane Crone, both of Patterson; three brothers, Virgil, Lawrence and James T. Crone, all of
Illiones. The family requested that remembrances be made to the Stanislaus County Heart Association or the Cancer
Society. Services were held Wednesday afternoon in the Evans Funeral Chapel for Mr. Williams, and burial was in
Acacia Memorial Park, Modesto.  A native of Kentucky, Williams had lived in Patterson since 1924.  He was a retired
diesel engineer employed by the Phillips 66 Company for 44 years.  He was a member of the local Masonic Lodge and of
the West Side Sportsmen s Club. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Ellen Williams of Patterson; two daughters, Mrs. Patricia
Carol Hoffman of Sacramento and Mrs. Darlene Trevey of San Francisco; two sisters, Mrs. Jessie Treat of Newman and
Mrs. Anna Swote of Hayworth; two brothers, Edgar Kirby Williams of Lindsay and Bruce Raymond Williams of
Southern California, and two grandchildren.

Arthur Crooks Meets Death; Services were held June 29 at Wessendorf Holmes Chapel in Santa Cruz for Arthur Crooks,
53, brother of Cashues Crooks of 320 E Street and of Mrs. Annabelle Lucas of 218 1/ 2 South Fourth Street who died
June 24 in a Santa Cruz hospital after a three  month illness. Mr. Crooks had visited in Patterson often and had many
friends here. For many years he had been associated with the Santa Cruz Begonia Gardens. He is survived by two other
brothers, Walter Crooks of Grantville, Utah and Raymond Crooks of Merced.

Friday Funeral to be Held for M. R. Days; A rosary will be recited this evening at 6 o clock in the Evans Funeral Chapel
for Manuel Rodrick Days, 62, who died Tuesday in a Modesto hospital after a lengthy illness.  A requiem mass will be
celebrated at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, in Sacred Heart Church, and interment will be in Patterson District Cemetery.
A native of Massachusetts, Days had lived in this area of Stanislaus County for 30 years. He leaves his wife, Mary Days
of Highway 33 in Patterson; two sons, Robert and Tony Days, both of Patterson; four grandchildren; his mother, Mrs.
Anthony Days, two brothers, Anthony and Ernest Days and a sister, Mrs. Evangeline Self, all of Santa Barbara. The
family has asked that memorials in Mr. Days  name be made to the University of Colorado and left with Evans Funeral
Chapel.

Charles De Orr Dies in Modesto after Illness; Funeral services were held Friday at Evans Funeral Chapel for Charles
Frank De Orr, 73, who died September 15 in a Modesto hospital after a short illness. A native of Connecticut, he had
lived here for 15 years.  A veteran of World War I, he was a retired produce packing foreman of Patterson and Stockton.
Surviving him are a daughter, Mrs. Betty R. Ruston of El Toro, and a grandson, Charles Ruston, who is with the U.S.
Navy aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Mrs. Derrick Dies; A one time resident of Patterson, Mrs. Beverly Derrick, 42, of San Jose, was buried Saturday after
ceremonies at Oak Hill Memorial Park in her home city.  She died in a San Jose hospital Feb. 9 after a long illness.
Born in Patterson, Mrs. Derrick was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Eggers, Sr., who lived here with their
family from 1923 to 1938 when Mr. Eggers was transferred to Ryer Island near Rio Vista by the Del Monte Company.
Survivors of Mrs. Derrick are her husband, Harry Derrick; a son, Harry Derrick, Jr., a daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Beasley,
and two grandsons, all of San Jose; two sisters,  Mrs. Meralee Light of Tracy and Mrs. Jeanne "Betty" Machado of
Capitola; five brothers, William, Robert, LeRoy and Dennis Eggers, all of Tracy, and Kenneth Eggers of Miltpitas,
She also leaves three aunts, Mrs. Louise Haffensperger, Mrs. Carrie Kenner and Mrs. Emma Gonzales, and three cousins,
Frederick Irwin, Ray Murphy and Mrs. Gladys Wagener. During World War II, Mrs. Derrick made her home with Mrs.
Light while her husband served with the U.S. Navy. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Fund.

Herman Dittman Dies in Colo. While on Trip; Herman Dittman, formerly of Patterson and now of Loomis, died in
Pueblo, Colo., Monday while on a trip.  He became suddenly ill and was hospitalized in this city where he died. Funeral;
services will be held next Monday at 2 p.m. in the Sans Foothill Chapel, Loomis. Mr. Dittman leaves his wife, Mrs.
Lucille Dittman, and a stepdaughter.

No Identity Of Girl in Canal; The body of a young woman,.possible a young girl, found murdered and floating in the
Delta Mendota Canal last Saturday morning, has still not been identified. It is speculated the girl is from this area, and
that she may have been quite young.  It was reported she was about 5 feet 5  and 135 pounds.  No one fitting this
description has been reported missing in this county.  The body was noticed by Ernest Hefner of Tracy, an employee of
the US Department of the Interior who was patrolling the canal between Patterson and Westley about midmorning last
Saturday.  The girl apparently died of numerous deep stab wounds.  An attempt had been made to cut off her fingers, hut
only a thumb was missing from the body. (Identified in 10-14-1971 Irrigator as Darlene Elaine Groover)

Mrs. Dorsey Dies in Hospital After Illness; Funeral services were held Friday at Evans Funeral Chapel for Mrs. Belle
Dorsey, 69, who died Nov 2 at Del Puerto Hospital after a brief illness.  Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery.
A native of Missouri, Mrs. Dorsey had lived on East Marshall Road for 25 years. She is survived by her husband,
William A. Dorsey; four daughters, Mrs. Irma Lee Barnes of Missouri, Mrs. Audie Johnson of Poplar;  Mrs.  Icie Naylor
of Modesto and  Mrs. Helen Ollar of Stockton; four sons, Bob G. and Junior Caudell of Crows Landing; Joe Caudell of
Modesto, and William Caudell of Oklahoma; 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

St. Paul Burial For Mrs. Dutra; A funeral service was held at Evans Funeral Chapel Saturday for Mrs. Elsie Eleanor
Dulra, 69, who died in her sleep July 28 at her home.  Another service was held in St. Paul, Minn., Tuesday, and burial
was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in that city. A native of Minneapolis, Minn., she had lived in Patterson 25 years.
She is survived by her husband, Frank Dutra. a son, Richard Clifford Tiegen, two sisters, Mrs. Olga Burke and Mrs.
Alvina Rynning, and two grandchildren, all of Minneapolis.

Hilmar Man Electrocuted At Vernalis; A well known Hilmar area farmer, Hilding William Elmquist, 54, was electrocuted
last Sunday noon when attempting to free a hot air balloon from high voltage lines near the Vernalis dragstrip. The
balloon, piloted by Raoul Nadeau of San Mateo, had made a landing in a field and then was blown into the power lines.
Nadeau climbed out safely but Elmquist was electrocuted when he began pulling at guy wires.  An ambulance company
from Modesto, on duty at the nearby strip where racing was underway, rushed him to a Modesto hospital where he was
dead on arrival.

Thomas Fleming Dies in Modesto After Surgery; Thomas Fleming, 74, of El Solyo Village died Wednesday morning at a
Modesto hospital after surgery. There will be visitation hours at Franklin S Downs Funeral home in Modesto today,
Thursday, from 5 to 9 p.m.  The funeral service will be private. A native of Dalry, Scotland, Mr. Fleming lived for 51
years in San Francisco where he was an estimator for painting contractors.  He and Mrs. Fleming, who survives him,
came to Patterson to live last October. He was a member of the Scottish St. Andrew s Society in San Francisco for many
years and was the organization s financial secretary for 15 years.  He also was a member of the Scottish Clan Frazier, of
the Caledonia Club and of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Gussie Fleming, at their El Solyo
Village home; three sisters, Mrs. George Moore of Los Angeles, Mrs. J.W. Rollinson of San Mateo and Mrs. Margaret
Torres of San Francisco; one brother, James Fleming of Redwood City, one niece, and four nephews in Scotland. The
family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, tributes be sent to the Heart Fund.

Church for Antone Roga Furtado, 78, who died Sunday in a hospital in that city after a long illness.  Burial was in Holy
Cross Cemetery, Santa Cruz. Mr. Furtado is survived by his wife, Mary E. Furtado, one son, Edward A. Furtado, and one
daughter, Dorothy Harmon, all of Santa Cruz and another daughter, Geraldine Morganti of Crows Landing; seven
grandchildren, and one great grandchild. A native of Fayal, Azores Islands, Mr. Furtado came to the United States at the
age of 17 and lived for a time in San Francisco and Oakland before moving to Patterson in 1919 with his wife and one
daughter.  He operated a dairy farm here until 1947 when he retired and moved to Santa Cruz.  He was a member of the
Portuguese fraternal organizations, I.D.E.S. and U.P.E.C. White's Mortuary was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Banos in 1910 when he opened his own dairy.  In 1919 he came to Patterson to operate a dairy here.  He retired six years

Suicide s Body Found in Canal, Identified; The body of a woman, found in the Delta-Mendota Canal by the gate of
Station 8 a mile south of Marshall Road Saturday has been identified as that of Darlene Elaine Groover, 29, of 754 West
St., Tracy. She was identified by her husband, Randall Groover, according to officers. About two weeks ago, San Joaquin
County sheriff s deputies found a pick up truck parked near the canal close to Chrisman Road with a suicide note
attached asking officers to notify the victim s husband.

Arthur Halsall Dies at Coast After illness; The news has come to Patterson that Arthur C. Halsall, formerly of Patterson,
died March 5 in San Francisco.  According to a friend, he underwent surgery January 4 and had been ill since that event.
A native of the Isle of Man, Halsall served with the British Army for approximately four years during World War I.  He
come to Patterson about 1920 and left about 1941.  During his residence here he was, for many years head bookkeeper for
his cousin, Mr. Phil Shimmin, father of Mr.Eldon Shimmin.  He was a member of Patterson Lodge 488, F. & AM., and
also belonged to the Scottish Rite bodies.

Mrs. Hanson Dies in Tracy, Service There; Mrs. Helen M. Hansen of Tracy, mother of Mrs. H. D. "Louise" Gerhart of
300 South Seventh St., died Saturday in Manteca at a guest house where she had been residing for the past year. Funeral
services were held Tuesday in the Chapel of Hotchkiss Mortuary, Tracy.  The body was cremated, and entombment in
Casa Bonita Mausoleum, Stockton. A native of Iowa, Mrs. Hanson came to California 69 years ago.  The family operated
a farm in the Tracy area for 44 years. Mrs. Hanson is survived by one other daughter, Mrs. Zelma Tretheway of San
Leandro, a son, Robert C. Hanson of Tracy; seven grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.  She had been preceded in
death by her husband, Joseph N. Hanson in 1938; one other son, Paul D. Hanson, and a grandson, Paul Gerhart, U.S.N.

Patterson, died July 2 in an Alynn hospital. She attended Patterson schools, and left here after her marriage to live in the
Washington community where she remained ever since.  She often returned to Patterson to visit with old friends.  She
leaves one son in Washington.

Youth Killed After Thrown From Truck; A freak truck-car accident last Friday afternoon killed a young Garden Grove
youth just north of Westley. Michael Hurd, 18, died Friday evening of injuries suffered when he was thrown from a truck
driven by Ruben Quintano, 18, son of the owner of Quintano Trucking of Garden Grove.  The young truck driver was not
injured, and told investigating officers he came upon a car from behind, swerved to miss it, and left the roadway on the
left side going north. The truck struck the rear of the auto driven by Aquimino Ignacio Goulart of Modesto.  He and his
wile were not injured. The driver of the truck said he noticed the car s right rear light come on and he veered the truck to
the left to pass.  The car then turned left in front of him, he said.  The truck broke off a power pole, cutting off electricity
and telephone lines to Westley,  jumped a ditch and ran out into a field. At this point the tilt-up cab of the truck sprang
forward, throwing out young Hurd.  He was run over by the front part of the truck in the field.

Former Resident Dies in City After Accident; Eugene A. Jaderquist, 49, a news editor for NBC News and KNBR Radio,
who was born and raised in Patterson, died Friday at a San Francisco hospital.  He had been there since being hit by a car
Sunday when he sustained massive injuries. The well-known news man attended Patterson schools and is a graduate of
Patterson High School. His grandfather, Mr. A.P. Jaderquist built what is now the Plaza Grocery, then called Jaderquist s
Grocery, and his son, George Jaderquist, father of the newsman, being an electrician, operated an electrical appliances
section in the store. Mr. Jaderquist  joined the NBC News San Francisco bureau in 1965, having previously been
employed by the San Jose Mercury News and by Motor Trend Magazine for which he was associate editor.  He also had
published several books and articles on antique cars.

Prominent Local Man Succumbs after Stroke; Lyle E. Johnson, 63, president of West Side Packers, the newly organized
apricot cooperative, and of the Patterson Colony Drain District, both of which he was active in organizing, died Friday
afternoon in Salinas after suffering a stroke.  He had been visiting his brother, Wesley Johnson, there. Services were held
Tuesday afternoon at Evans Funeral Chapel, and burial was in Patterson District Cemetery. Born in Minnesota, he had
lived here 40 years.  He also operated a garage on Highway 33, was a Shell Oil Company distributor and an apricot
grower.  His home was at 1600 Prune Ave. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Patterson Masonic Lodge, the Rotary Club
and the Patterson Volunteer Fire Department, and an early-day member of the Patterson 20-30 Club, now defunct.
Besides his brother, he leaves two sons, Larry of Patterson and Lyle E. Johnson, Jr., of Palm Springs; a sister, Mrs. Avis
Ringer, and two grandchildren, Leslie Renee and Harold David Johnson, both of Patterson.

Modesto in charge of arrangements here. A native of Albany, Kansas, she was a member of Sacred Heart Church here.
She leaves two sons, James E. Keefe of Patterson and Francis Keefe of Monterey; a sister, Sadie O Conner of Fredonia,
Kansas, four grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

Klopping Rites Held Monday, Died Friday; Ray A. Klopping, 73, was well known Patterson community leader for many
years, died Friday in a local hospital after a long illness.  Services were held Monday at Evans Funeral Chapel, and burial
was in Patterson District Cemetery. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Genevieve Klopping; a son, George Klopping and two
grandchildren, all of Patterson, and a sister, Mrs. Mae Scott of Iowa. At the age of 21, Mr. Klopping came from
Underwood, Iowa, where he was born, and farmed a mile south of town.  In 1927 he married Miss Genevieve Raggio.
Probably his greatest contribution to the community was his accomplishments during his service with the Patterson Water
District, a responsibility he assumed in 1938 while still farming, when he became a director. In 1948, he took over the
position of District secretary-manager and sold part of his farm, disposing of the rest in 1952. Many major improvements
to the Water District occurred during his management, the most important being his negotiation by which the United
States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Reclamation, agreed to allow the District 6,000 acre feet of free water
yearly until 1995, a coop which should result in the saving of many thousands of dollars for the District over the years,
according to a District official. Mr. Klopping became a member of the Patterson-Westley Chamber of Commerce soon
after his arrival in Patterson, and served as its president from November, 1939, to November, 1941, being re-elected in
December, 1940.  He joined the Patterson Rotary Club in 1948 and remained a member until his resignation in 1968.
His contributions to city government began in 1953 and ‘54 when he sat on the City Council.  In 1959 he began his long
service as city treasurer which lasted until his retirement because of his ill health in January of this year.  Upon receiving
his resignation, the Council drew up a resolution in recognition of his contribution to the area. Referring to the agreement
Mr. Klopping obtained from the U. S. government as manager of the Water district, it reads, "It  is difficult to realize the
value of this settlement to the landowners of Patterson." Of his contribution to the city as council treasurer, the resolution
goes on, "Ray has always taken an active part in the development of Patterson..."and " .. .has always been careful,
conscientious and accurate.... the funds of the City ( under him ) have at all times been kept safe and secure."

Patterson, died Sunday in Brawley where funeral services were conducted Tuesday at Frye Chapel & Mortuary.  Masonic
graveside rites were held Wednesday in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Hugo, Oklahoma, Lane had lived in
Patterson 13 years, moving here in 1935.  He was a retired farmer. Besides his two daughters, he is survived by five
grandchildren, also of Patterson, two sisters and two brothers. The family requests that remembrances be made to the
Stanislaus County Cancer Society.

A native of California, she lived in Patterson from 1927 to 1933 with a brief residence in Keyes during that time.  Her
home was in Turlock from 1933 until her death.  She was a member of S.P.R.S.I. Lodge No. 121 of Patterson and of St.
Anthony s Lodge in Turlock. Surviving her are her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Homen of Patterson; a son, Mr. Joe Lima of
Denair four brothers, Manuel, Anthony, Frank and Lawrence Garcia of Oakland; three sisters, Mrs. Lily Miller, Mrs.

William S. Long Dies Here after Long Illness; Funeral services were held Tuesday at Evans Funeral Chapel for Willam
S. Long, 79, who died July 8 in a local hospital after a long illness.  Interment was in Hills Ferry Cemetery, Newman.
A native of Kansas, he came west to Stockton, in 1908, at the age of 16.  He met and married his wife in Waco, Texas,
when he returned from the Air Force duty in World War I, and they celebrated their golden wedding April 20, 1969, here
at the Federated Church. The Longs' move into Stanislaus County was first to Newman.  From there, they came to
Patterson in 1937.  Here he operated a body fender shop for many years with the exception of the World War II years
when, as a patriotic veteran, he closed his shop to work at the Tracy Defense Depot.  After the war, he spent five years
with the Bessey Motor Company before once again opening his shop.  He retired from business in 1957. A veteran of
World War I, he was very active in Legion work during his life in Patterson, and was awarded the first Life Membership
by Elijah B. Hayes Post 168 of which he was a past commander. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Veda Long at their
570 D Street home; two sisters, Mrs. Inez Taylor of Arroyo Grande and Mrs. Viola Gardner of Kansas City, Mo.; two
brothers, Sam Long of Hemet, Joe Long of Cory, Colorado.  He had one son, Lt. Wallace Long of the U.S. Air Force,
who was accidentally killed in 1942 when a bomber he was piloting crashed on Will Rogers Field in Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma.

Daniel Accident Kills Santa Mendoza, Burial Here; A requiem mass was held Monday at Sacred Heart Church for Santa
Daniel Mendoza, 19, of 2148 Orange Ave., who was killed early on the morning of Dec. 23 in an auto accident on
Highway 99 near Tulare.  Burial was in Patterson District Cemetery. The tragedy occurred when one of Mendoza s tires
blew out while driving.  He lost control of his car which hit the highway divider. A native of Tijuana, Mexico, he had
lived here six years.  He was an employee of the Manuel Silva Ranch. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Bonnie Jean Mendoza;
an infant son, Santa Lee Mendoza; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesus Mendoza, and two brothers, Jesus Domingos Mendoza
and Regalo Mendoza, all of Patterson.

James Mitchell Dies in Hospital After Accident; Funeral services were held in Evans Funeral Chapel Wednesday for
James V. Mitchell, 79, who died Saturday in a local hospital afer an accident July 1 in Novato.  Burial was in Patterson
District Cemetery. A native of Springfield, Mo., Mr Mitchell and his wife, Mrs. Regina J. Mitchell, have made Patterson
the headquarters for the mobile home in which they have lived for 18 years after his retirement.  At that time, he was
superintendent of the Early Intake Power House.  He was employed by the city and county of San Francisco at Hetch
Hetchy Water and Power Project. He was a member of the Bakersfield Masonic Lodge, the Oakland Scottish Rite bodies
and the Sonora Chapter of Eastern Star.  Mrs Mitchell is the sister of Dr. Neils Koldinger.

Monohans Back from Funeral of Mother; The Ronald Monohans of 14301 Elm  Ave. have returned from New Bedford,
Mass., where they attended funeral services September 25 for his mother, Mrs. Gertrude Moniz Monohan, 76, who died
September 22 in a New Bedford hospital after an illness which began in January. The service was held at Grace
Episcopal Church, and burial was in Rural Cemetery, both in New Bedford.  The  Rock Funeral Home was in charge.
A native of New Bedford, Mrs. Monohan had lived there all her life.  She was a charter member and a past president of
Andrea Davis Post 1531 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. Also surviving her are two other sons, George
Frederick Monohan of New Bedford and Elbert Monohan of Pembroke, Mass.; a sister, Mrs. Betty Lima of New Bedford,
and eight grandchildren.

Church in Felton for Mrs. Josephine M. Mortensen, 81, of Scotts Valley who died in a Santa Cruz hospital Sunday after a
short illness.  Internment will be in Oakland Memorial Park, Santa Cruz. Among her survivors are her sister, Mrs. Pearl
Nicolds and two brothers, Alfred and George Knutson of Patterson. She also leaves her husband, Anton L. Mortensen of
Scotts Valley; three daughters, Mrs. Lois Gilbertson of Sunnyvale, Mrs. Anne Post of Bakersfield, and Mrs. Marilyn
Stirling of Mt. Herman; two other sisters, Mrs. Lola Doherty of San Pedro and Mrs. Alice Pearson of San Clemente;
another brother, Clifford Knutson of  Woodland, and eight grandchildren. A native of Crookston, Minn., Mrs. Mortensen
came to Patterson with her family in 1912.  She was employed for a time as a young woman at the Post Office, at
Finister s General Merchandise and Groceries where the Eagle Drug now is, and at the Luttrell Hotel, presently the
Triangle Club building.  She was married here in 1919. The Mortensen lived in Oakland and Palo Alto before moving to
the Santa Cruz area where they resided for the past 15 years.  She always  was active in church work. Funeral directors,
Irvin M. Smith and Sons of Santa Cruz, are in charge of arrangements.

Former Patterson Man Dies in Santa Cruz; Services were held March 12 in Wessendorf and Holmes Mortuary, Santa
Cruz, for John Edward Norell, 83, a former resident of Patterson, who died March 9 in a Santa Cruz hospital.  Mr. Norell
was the uncle of Ivan and Jack Stewart of Patterson. Cremation followed the Santa Cruz service which was conducted by
the Rev. John Martin and the American Legion.  Interment was in the family plot, Patterson District Cemetery. A native
of Cental City, Nebraska, Mr. Norrell lived in Patterson from the early 1920's until 1937 when the family moved to Santa
Cruz.  He operated a feed, fuel and ice business on Highway 33, and was a veteran of World Wars I and II. Other
survivors are his widow, Mrs. Josie Norell; three stepsons, Henry Del Biaggio of Gilroy, Pat Del Biaggio of Fairfield, and
William Del Biaggio of San Jose; a brother, Jay Norell of Long Beach; nine grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and

Olivero, formerly of Patterson, who died Dec. 12 in an Oakland hospital after a long illness.  Interment was in an Oakland
cemetery. Mrs. Olivero and her husband, Mateo Olivero, now deceased, came to Patterson in 1924 when their daughter,
now Mrs. Clara Olivero Del Cesta of 5575 Florence Terrace, Oakland, was three years old.  The family ranched on
Walnut ave. and remained here for many years during which time their daughter was graduated from Patterson schools
and employed by the Commercial Bank.  They moved to Oakland upon retirement. Surviving Mrs. Olivero, besides her
daughter, are two grandchildren, Robert and Sandra Del Cesta. Funeral arrangements were handled by Albert and Brown
Mortuary of Oakland. Attending the services from Patterson were Mr. and Mrs. Alfonso Ielmini and Mrs. Mario Ielmini.

Turlock for William N. Pace, 92, father of Mr Seth  "Tex" Pace of Patterson.  Burial was in North Hilmar Cemetery.  Mr
Pace died September 22 tn a Modesto hospital after a long illness. A native of Mississippi, he moved to Texas when
young and to California in 1938.  He had lived in Turlock since 1948 He and his wife, Mrs. Myrtle Pace, who survives
him at the family home, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at a family party in Hilmar last July 24, the actual
anniversary falling the next day.  He was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church in Turlock. Others surviving are a

Juan M. Perez Dies in Hospital in Modesto; Juan M. Perez, 81, died early Monday morning at a Modesto hospital afer a
short illness.  Requiem mass was held at Sacred Heart Church in Patterson, Wednesday, and burial was in Hills Ferry
Cemetery, Newman. Born in Borau in the province of Huesea, Spain, he came in 1911 to the Lompoc area, starting his
California career with farm work there and marrying Miss Maria Antonia LaCosta in 1914.  In 1924, the young people
moved to the San Fernando Valley where he farmed until 1936 when they made their next move to Westley and the W.W.
Cox Ranch. In 1941 he began the Perez Westley farm operation and became one of the four pioneers who developed that
part of the Valley to row crops.  Also, at that time, he and his sons formed J.M. Perez and Sons. Mr. Perez turned the
administration of his business over to his four sons in 1949 when the Perez shipping and farming divisions were united
under the name of Perez Bros.  He remained active and interested in the business until he died. The Crows Landing
pioneer leaves two daughters, Mrs. Natz "Amelia", Tabar of Westley and Mrs. Americo "Mary", Dompe of Patterson; his
four sons, Daniel Perez of Westley; Tom and Earl Perez of Crows Landing, and Mike Perez of Dos Palos; 14

Iowa to attend the funeral of Mr. Phillips  father, John Joseph Phillips. The elder Mr. Phillips died early Tuesday
morning on his 70th birthday.   He had been in poor health for some time and was residing. in a rest home at the time of

Murder Victim Is Identified; The body of a young woman found Sunday evening floating in the Delta-Mendota canal was
identified Wednesday as an 18 year old Modestan. She was Patricia Ann Popejoy, whose address was listed the same as
her mother and step-father. Her body had been in the water from two to four weeks, according to the county pathologist.
The body was noticed Sunday by two Modestans, Jed and Sharon Green, who were fishing in the canal.  It was floating
on the surface. When removed from the canal, it was discovered that chains had been used to wire Miss Popejoy's legs
and neck to a trailer axle. However, her death was apparently caused by five blows to the back of the skull, possibly by a
hand axe.  Her larynx also was fractured. Sheriff s investigators state they do not have any leads as to the point at which
the body was thrown into the canal.

Costante Ravelli, 86, who died July 2 in a local hospital alter a brief illness.  Interment was in Modesto Catholic
Cemetery. A native of Italy, he came to Stanislaus County in the Patterson area about 1912, and married his wife,
Victoria, in 1913.  They lived here approximately 15 years before moving to the Santa Rosa area where he remained until
moving back here eight months ago. Survivors are three sons, Allen Ravelli of Los Angles, Charles Ravelli of
Sacramento and James Ravelli of Patterson, a daughter, Mrs. Mae Macy of Santa Rosa; a Sister, Mrs. Valenta Del Nero

Leonard Reza Killed in Action in Vietnam; Patterson s fourth service man has been killed in Vietnam. He was Leonard
Reza, 20, who died in action last Thursday, April 22.  His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alejandro Reza of Eureka Street,
Patterson received the news Monday. He entered the service January of 1970, and had been in Vietnam since last
September.  He had been serving with Company B, Third Battalion, 506th Infantry, 101 Airborne. Reza was a native of
Patterson and a graduate of the Patterson High School class of 1969.  White in high school, he was editor of the high
school paper, "Tiger Tales", president of the Mexican-American Students Association, a Junior United Nations delegate,
a member of the Art Club, Camera Club, Rooters incorporated and Drama Workshop.  He also was elected a member of
the Stanislaus County Community Action Commission. Besides his parents, he leaves four brothers, Armando Reza of
Modesto, and Manuel, John and Michael Reza of Patterson; and six sisters, Amelia and Carmen Reza of Hollywood, and
Mrs. Luisa Gonzales, Mrs. Connie Gonzales and Alexis and Bertha Reza, all of Patterson. Funeral arrangements are
pending at the Evans Funeral Chapel.

Reza Was Named Best Soldier in February; Leonard Reza, who died last week in Vietnam, was selected as the best
soldier in his company for the month of February. But by a bizarre twist of fate, the leller to his parents announcing the
honor did not arrive until Tuesday of this week after they had been notified of his death. The letter was from Colonel
Joseph E. Greene and was addressed to Mrs. Reza, It said: Your son, Leonard, is a member of my command, the 2nd
Brigade, 101st Airborne Division ( Airmobile ).  He was selected as the ‘Trooper of the Day on 25 March 1971.  This
means he was the best soldier in his company for the month of February. "Being selected in this capacity is an indication
that Leonard is doing an outstanding job and is, indeed, a distinct asset to his unit.  I am pleased to have him as a member
of this command. "As Bridge Commander, I appreciate Leonard's efforts and share the pride you must feel in the service
he is performing for his country.  It was a privilege to be able to spend a few hours with your son.  I am sure he will find
that his experience in Vietnam will be an assistance to him in whatever future field of endeavor he chooses..."

Church, San Jose. A native of Salao, Fayal, in the Azores Islands, Mr. Rose was a member of Council No 21 S.E.S.
Newman.  He was a Watkins dealer in Patterson in the 1940's. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Henrietta Rose, two daughters,
Mrs. Mary Louis Grandel and Mrs.  Delores Hogan and three sons, Joseph, Jr., Larry and William Rose, all of San Jose; a

of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Sandte of El Solyo Village, was a nurse at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Livermore at
the time of her death.  A native of Minnesota, she served as a U.S. Army nurse with the rank of lieutenant during World
War II.  She was stationed with the 248th General Hospital in the Philippine Islands at that time. A sister, Mrs. Marie
McDowell at Patterson, and several nieces and nephews, among them Mrs. Manuel Parnarra of Patterson, also survive

with her family and the Guy Scots, and her husband Willard Scott, died here in 1957. She had lived in Patterson 35 years.
Besides her son, Guy Scott she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Frank Hukill also of Patterson; eight grandchildren, 23
great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.  She also was preceded in death by a son, Vernon Scott, of
Patterson..

Garner Searl Dies Here While at Work in Garden; Services were held Tuesday morning at Evans Funeral Chapel for
Garner Roy Searl, 79, who died Friday while working in the garden of Searl Manor, a cottage unit he had owned and
operated for 15 years.  The Patterson Masonic Lodge assisted at the service.  Interment was in Patterson District
Cemetery. Born January 6 in Hemet, Riverside County, Searl moved to the Westley area in I939.  He and his wife
celebrated their 51st  wedding anniversary last October. In 1949 and ‘46 Mr Searl was manager of the West Stanislaus
Bean Growers, a position he left in the spring of ‘46 to build the Patterson Tile Company on South First Street, a business
he operated through 1960.  In this company he manufactured the brick from which he built Searl Manor. Mr. Searl was a
member of Maze Boulevard Christian Church in Modesto and president of the Stanislaus-Merced Counties Christian
Endeavor Union in 1920.  He also was a member of the Patterson Masonic Lodge 488, a member and past patron of
Patterson Chapter 417, Order of Eastern Star, and a charter member and past president of the Patterson Lions Chub.
The well known Patterson man was a veteran of World War I with 21 months overseas in the conflict, and he was
president of Company M, 161st Infantry, World War Veterans of the Centralia, Washingto National Guard Unit.
Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Geraldine Lester Searl; three daughters, Mrs. Mildred Searl Wisecarver of Greenbrae,
Mrs. Idella Searl Latter, Pacific Palisades, and Mrs. Coralyn Ann Searl Ramos, Newman; 10 grandchildren, among them
Captain Kurt Wisecarver of Okinawa, the only one who was unable to attend the funeral. Also surviving are three sisters,
Mrs Ethel McKusick, Grants Pass, Ore.; Mrs. Evelyn Russell, Colton, and Mrs. Edna Cramer, Fresno, and two brothers,
Clyde C. Searl of Fes, Morocco, and Floyd L. Searl of Hemet. The family has requested that memorials be sent to the
Sight Conservation Project of the Patterson Lions Club the  Memorial Fund of Maze Boulevard Christian Church in
Modesto.

George Sears Flies to Funeral of Father; Mr. George R Sears of East Las Palmas Ave.  received word Monday that his
father, Thomas Sears, 88, of Clermont, N.J. had died early that morning in a local hospital after and three month illness.
Mr. Sears left Patterson by plane immediately for the East. The senior Mr. Sears, a resident of Cape May County for 49
years, was a municipal judge in Dennis Township there.  He also was the only county property appraiser, a position he
had held for 26 years. Besides his son, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mabel Sears, three step-grandchildren and nine
step-great grandchildren. The funeral was held Wednesday under the auspices of the Radzieta Funeral Home.

Services Held For H.R. Shields in Modesto; Services were held Wednesday afternoon at Carmody Memorial Chapel,
Modesto, for Howard Robert Shields, 61, of Saratoga, temporarily of Mission Motel, who was found floating in the Delta
Mendota Canal Sunday morning by Sheriff s deputies who had been searching for him.  Interment was in Parkview
Cemetery, Modesto. Shields  body was sighted about half a mile south of Fink Road in Crows Landing.  The Patterson
firemen with their rescue truck, assisted in recovering it. On the scene, a deputy said that very early Sunday morning
Shields  car was located parked by the canal at Zacharias Road with the engine running and his dog sitting beside it.  The
law men surmised that he had been night fishing in the canal and, after getting his catch, had placed his gear in the car
and returned to pick up his fish.  At that time, they speculate, he slipped and fell into the canal. Mr. Shields, who had
been living in Patterson for the past month while doing a job here, is survived by his wife, Mrs. Audra Shields of
Saratoga; a son, J.C. Shields of Campbell; three daughters the Mmes, Lenna Leo of Atlanta, Georgia; Bonnie Amann,
Los Gatos, and Glenda Henry of San Jose; a sister, Mrs. Verna Pigott of Patterson; a brother, Walter Shields, Modesto,
and 13 grandchildren.

Mrs. Shoemake Dies in Fall off Golf Course; Funeral services were held Friday for Mrs. Marjorie Sboemake, 55, who
was killed March 30 when she accidentally fell down a 15 foot cliff off the sixth fairway of the Pebble Beach Golf
Course. The rites were conducted by the Rev. George Ridgway, former pastor of St. James Episcopal Church of
Monterey, at the Little Chapel-by-the-Sea in Pacific Grove.  Private inurnment followed. Mrs. Shoemake's body was
recovered from the surf early March 31 after a night long search.  According to the coroner s office, she died of head,
chest and spinal injuries resulting from her fall. Mrs. Shoemake and her husband had returned to their home called
Fairway overlooking the 14th fairway of the Pebble Beach Golf Course in the afternoon after a visit to their ranch near
Patterson, and she decided to take a walk along tho golf course.  When she did not return by dusk, her husband called the
Del Monte Security office. A sandal was found at the top of the cliff where she had fallen into the water at high tide.
Apparently she survived the fall, removed her wet slacks and knit blouse, which were found on the rocks at the beach,
and started walking toward the Beach Club before she collapsed.  Though she had a large cut on the back of her head,
foul play is not suspected.  She was still wearing her large diamond rings when found. The Shoemake's daughter, Jill,
was away skiing at the time of the accident. A native of Los Angles, Mrs. Shoemake moved to the Peninsula in 1966.
The family has requested that contributions in her memory be made to Beacon House in Pacific Grove or a preferred
charity.

Neal J. Smith Dies in Texas, Buried There; News has come to Patterson of the death March of Neal J. SmIth, 58, of
Houston, Texas, formerly of Patterson.  Funeral services were held in the Chapel of the Memorial Oaks Cemetery with
Rev. James Lee Reily officiating, and interment was in Memorial Oaks Cemetery.  George H. Lewis and Sons were in
charge of arrangements. A native of Newman, Smith came to Patterson in 1920 and went to school here.  He is a graduate
of Patterson High School having attended the school in the early 30 s when Professor Halley was principal. Vice
president of Cheveron Oil Co. Geo- physical Division, he was employed by Standard Oil of California for 54 years.  He
was a member of S.E.G., A.A,P.C., Houston Geological Society, Geophysical of Houston and American Society of
Oceanography.  He was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Betty Smith of Houston; his
father, Hartley Roy Smith of Bristol, Conn; two daughters, Mrs. Tod DuPont, Chicago, Ill., and Mrs. Ward Noble of San
Francisco; three sons, Burl Smith, Houston; Texas, Tod I. Smith, Los Angeles and Martin D. Smith of St. Paul, Minn.;

Frank Souza Dies in Hospital in Patterson; A requiem mass was celebrated Tuesday at Immaculate Hear Church in Crows
Landing for Frank Sousa, 88, who died here Sunday in a local hospital after a long illness.  Interment was at Hills Ferry
Cemetery, Newman. Mr.  Sousa was a 56 year resident of Crows Landing where he was a retired dairyman.  He was a
member of the IDES and UPEC Councils there. Survivors are his wife Maria Sousa at their Crows Landing home, six
daughters, Mrs. Mary Santos, Mrs.  Lena Gomes and Mrs.  Beatrice Morris all of Patterson, Mrs. Rose Mello and Mrs
Eva Leal of Turlock, and Mrs. Velma Corriea of Crows Landing.  18 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. He also
leaves two sisters, Mrs. Delfina Cardoza of Tracy, Mrs. Alexandrina Souza of/ Los Banos and one brother, Earl Souza of
Merced. Friends gathered at the Evans Krieger Chapel in Newman Monday evening to recite the rosary in Mr. Souza's
memory.

J. B. Spradling Dies Suddenly Buried Here; Masonic rites were conducted Tuesday afternoon at Evans Funeral Chapel
for Joseph Bennett Spradling, 60, of Vernalis who died suddenly in Manteca Saturday.  Spradling was postmaster for 15
years in Vernalis. He was buried in Patterson District Cemetery. Mr. Spradling collapsed and died when starting to put
gasoline into his pickup at a Manteca self-service station.  He had been under doctor s care for diabetes for 10 years.  An
autopsy was to be performed. Born in Kansas, the area postmaster also ran the Vernalis General Store. He is survived by
his widow, Maxine Spradling of Vernalis; a son, George Spradling of Berkeley, and a brother, George Spradling of
Kansas.

Modesto, for Mrs. Estal Audrey Sprouls, 91, of that city who was killed in a two-car crash Sunday at West Main Ave. and
Carpenter Rd., west of Turlock, when six other persons were injured.  She is the grandmother of Harvey Ridenhour of
Crows Landing. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park, Modesto. A native of Cayuga, Ind., Mrs. Sprouls came to
Modesto in 1953.  She is a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Golden State Rebekah Lodge 110, both of Modesto.
Survivors are her two sons, Clyde Earl Sprouls of Fresno and Robert L. Sprouls of Mexico, Mo., three daughters, Mrs.

Ralph Streeter Dies in Newman, Buried Here; Death came to Ralph Edward Streeter, 74, the morning of May 13 after a
long illness.  He had been living at the San Luis Convalescent Hospital in Newman.  Services were held at Evans Funeral
Chapel, Monday, and burial was in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Lompoc, Mr. Streeter had lived in the
Patterson-Westley area for 35 years.  He was a veteran of World War I and a retired farmer.  The American Legion, the
Patterson Men s Group and the West Side Sportsmen s Club were organizations to which he belonged. Survivors are his
widow, Mildred Streeter, at their 400 North Fourth Street home; and five sisters, Mrs. Lars Kolding and Mrs. Clarence
Hetzel of Patterson, Mrs. Mildred Franzina of Ballard, Mrs. Clare Jones of Lynwood, and Mrs. Lucile Gordon of Seattle,

 Dr. Thompson Dies in Newman of Heart Attack; Dr. James E. Thompson, 68, of Newman,  father of James Thompson
Jr., of the Eagle Drug here, died the evening of September 2 of an apparent hearts attack.  Funeral  services were held
Saturday at Evans Krieger Funeral Chapel in Newman.  The cremains are interred at Hills Ferry Cemetery in Newman.
Mr. Thompson, Sr., came to Newman from Los Angeles in 1935, and joined Dr. A.M. Roscoe in s medical practice there.
He was one of the founders of the West Side Hospital which was built near Newman in 1938.  The hospital became a
community institution in 1957. The Newman doctor was graduated from the University of Colorado Medical School in
1928, did residence work at the Buffalo City Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y., and started his first practice in Denver in 1931.
He practiced in Los Angeles before moving to Newman. Dr. Thompson also is survived by his widow, Mrs. Martha
Thompson, in Newman; one brother, Dr. L.F. Thompson of  Los Angeles and three grandchildren. Remembrances are
asked to be made to the West Side Community Hospital Memorial Fund or the Heart Fund.

Councils of U.P.E.C. and I.D.E.S. Survivors are his wife, Mary Toesta; two sons, Joseph J. and Melvin Tosta, all of
Westley; three grandchildren; one great grandchild; brother; Manuel Tosta of Santa Barbara; and three sisters, Isabel

Frank Totman Dies in Santa Cruz Home; Funeral services were held Tuesday in Holy Cross Church, Santa Cruz, for
Frank Harold Totman, 74, formerly of Patterson, who died Saturday morning at his home in  that city alter a long illness.
Interment was in Holy Cross Mausoleum, Coloma. A native of Newman, Totman spent his early years in Patterson,
graduating from Patterson schools.  After completing studies at a San Francisco veterinary college, he practiced his
profession for some years here. In 1924 he became state meat inspector, and was the first state inspector for the Walti-
Schilling Co. in Santa Cruz, having moved to there by then.  He left Santa Cruz. in 1932 transferring to Stockton where
he retired because of ill health.  However, he returned to Santa Cruz later that year, and remained there until his death.
The former Patterson man was a veteran of World War 1, having served in the veterinary corps of the Army.  He and his
wife, Clementina, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1970. Totman was preceded in death by his son, Harold
Totman, a casualty of World War II, and a stepson, Frank Stroppini, who died in 1962. He a survived by his widow, a
step-son, Elmer Stroppini of Sacramento, a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Christopherson of Patterson, and three grandchildren.
He also was the brother-in-law of Mrs. Mary Totman of this city, and his grandfather. was Patterson pioneer Aaronholdt
D. Elfers after whom Elders Avenue was named. White s Chapel, Santa Cruz, was in charge of funeral arrangements.

killed instantly when they drove in front of a Southern Pacific Co. freight train and were stuck as they were approaching
Ninth St. The train crashed into the boys  automobile while traveling at 50 miles per hours.  The car was torn in half and
the passenger section dragged a mile northward before the train was able to stop.  Gerry, 19, was heading for a career in
bio chemistry or zoology at Modesto Junior College, and Mike, 15 was a  sophomore at Central Catholic High School
where he was rated as a higher than average student and was a member of the California Scholarship Federation.
Survivors, besides the boys  parents, are two sisters, Liduina, 17, a senior at Central Catholic, and Anne, 12, a pupil at St.
Stanislaus Elementary School, and two brothers, Peter, 10, and Paul, 8, both student at St. Stanislaus.  Funeral services
were held Nov. 2 at St.  Stanislaus Catholic Church in Modesto where Rev. Thomas Whelan celebrated the Mass of the
Resurrection.  Burial was in St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery with Carmody Memorial Chapel in charge.

Mrs. Ventuleth Dies in Modesto Buried Here; Rev. Harold F. Blalkey conducted graveside services Tuesday in Patterson
District Cemetery for Mrs. Edwina Herberta Ventuleth, 79, who died Monday in a Modesto Convalescent Home. A
native of San Francisco, she lived in Patterson for 54 years before moving to Modesto three years ago.  For 45 years she
worked as a pharmacist at the Eagle Drug store of which she was owner. Her first husband, Jack McElhern, started the
Eagle Drug in 1917.   When he died in a flu epidemic the next year, she carried on the operation of the business.  She
married Fred Ventuleth, also a pharmacist, three years later. The well know woman was a past patron of Patterson
Chapter 437, Order of Eastern Star. Surviving her are a daughter, Mrs. Frances Miller of Modesto, a son, Fred Ventuleth
of New York City; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

the Flowers, 900 South Second St., San Jose, for William Weisendanger, 66, who died Christmas Day in a San Jose
Hospital after a brief illness.  Cremation and inurnment will follow. A native of Campbell, Weisendanger was a retired
San Jose rancher who moved to his ranch in the San Antonio Valley west of Patterson in 1957.  He had owned this ranch
for 47 years. He leaves three sons, Ed of San Jose; Burton of San Antonio Valley, and Karl Weisendanger of Santa Clara;

Services Held for Crone,  Williams After Accident; Services were held Wednesday for two Patterson men who were
killed instantly early last Saturday morning when their pick-up plunged off the Early Intake-Cherry Valley Road four
miles north of Buck Meadows. Killed were Victor Newell Crone, 64, and Benjamin Hough Williams, 70.  Crone, in
whose pickup they were riding was apparently the driver. Fog and a switchback curve were attributed by highway
patrolmen as the probable cause of the accident.  No skid marks were found.  Crone s body was found 400 feet down the
embankment under an aluminum boat, and William s body was discovered 200 feet farther down. The pickup landed in
the north fork of the Tuolumne River, some 800 feet from where It left the roadway. An inquest was held early this week.
Services were held in Evans Funeral Chapel Wednesday morning, for Mr. Crone with burial in Jerseyville, Illinois.  He
was a native of that state, and had lived here 17 years, working as a self employed carpenter. He leaves a son, Robert Hall
Crone, and a daughter, Barbara Jane Crone, both of Patterson; three brothers, Virgil, Lawrence and James T. Crone, all of
Illinois. The family requested that remembrances be made to the Stanislaus County Heart Association or the Cancer
Society. Services were held Wednesday afternoon in the Evans Funeral Chapel for Mr. Williams, and burial was in
Acacia Memorial Park, Modesto.  A native of Kentucky, Williams had lived in Patterson since 1924.  He was a retired
diesel engineer employed by the Phillips 66 Company for 44 years.  He was a member of the local Masonic Lodge and of
the West Side Sportsmen s Club. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Ellen Williams of Patterson; two daughters, Mrs. Patricia
Carol Hoffman of Sacramento and Mrs. Darlene Trevey of San Francisco; two sisters, Mrs. Jessie Treat of Newman and
Mrs. Anna Swote of Hayworth; two brothers, Edgar Kirby Williams of Lindsay and Bruce Raymond Williams of
Southern California, and two grandchildren.

Oliver Willits Dies in East, Saturday Rites; Oliver G Willits, 78, father of Mrs. Harold "Margot" Jahn of 117 North Fifth
St., died Wednesday in his Barclay Hotel apartment in Philadelphia, Pa.  A memorial service will be held Saturday in All
Saints Church, Wynnewood, Pa. A native of New York, Willits was the retired chairman of the board of directors of
Campbell Soup Co. He also served for years as the national chairman of the United Fund. Other survivors are two other
daughters, Mrs. Nan Blake of Jefferson, Mass., and Mrs. Sylvia Rittenhouse of St. David s, PA; six grandchildren and
one great grandchild.

Funeral Today for Baby Boy; Graveside services will be held at 9 o clock this morning, Thursday, in Patterson District
Cemetery for Robert Roland Wilson, Jr. three days old, who died Monday in a Modesto hospital.  Evans Funeral Chapel
is in charge of arrangements. Besides his parents at the family home, 355 Chase Street, he leaves a  brother, Manuel
Wilson and three sisters, Norma, Laura and Sandra Wilson.

Otto A. Wiltse Dies at Home, Kansas Burial; Otto A. Wiltse, 58, was found dead of natural causes a his cabin at Azevedo
Camp, East Las Palmas Ave., Sunday morning. The body was shipped from here Tuesday for funeral services in
Independence, Kansas.   Webb Funeral Home of that city is in charge. A native of Kansas and a farm labor, he was
survived my his parents,  Mr. and Mrs. Otto Wilse of Independence.
