Alvernaz, 60, who died Nov. 17 at Orange Cove alter a short illness. Interment was in Hills Ferry Cemetery. A native of Crows Landing, Alvernaz had lived in Orange Cove for the past five years. He is survived by his wife, Gladys of Orange Cove; one daughter Virginia Dyer of Santa Clara, a sister, Mrs. Joe Francis of Patterson; three brothers, Joe of Newman, Tony and William of Crows Landing; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Anchordoquy Antoine 720803 np Rosary Friday For Ranchman Killed on Press; Antoine Anchordoquy, 39, first cousin of Mrs. Martin Barbaste of Patterson, died Tuesday in Dixon as the result of electrocution while working on a toy press. The boom of the press got into high tension wires causing the accident. A rosary will be recited Friday at 8 p.m. at Evans Funeral Chapel, and a requiem mass will be said at 9 a.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Spain, Mr. Anchordoquy has been in California nine years, four of them in Dixon. He leaves also a sister, Mrs. Jean Echeverria, and a brother, Miguel Anchordoquy, both of San Rafael. Avila Henry E 720113 p2 Henry E. Avila Killed in Santa Ana Accident; A rosary will be recited tonight, Thursday, at Evans Funeral Chapel for Henry E. Avila, 59, who was killed Monday afternoon in an automobile accident in Santa Ana. A requiem mass will be said at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Church, and burial will be in Patterson District Cemetery. The accident occurred when Mr. Avtla, who was employed by the Ervine Ranch Company in Santa Ana, was proceeding to lunch in a pickup truck driven by his boss. The pickup was involved in an accident, and Mr. Avila was thrown out of his vehicle and run over by another truck, meeting death instantly. A native of Mexico, he had lived in Santa Ana for the past three years. Before that time he had been a resident of Patterson for 25 years, having lived, over all in California, for 50 years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Clementina Avila of Patterson; two sons, Daniel of Fresno and Henry Avila, Jr. of Santa Ana; 10 daughters, Mrs. Phil Breasher of Patterson; Mrs. Tony Bravo, Jr. of Westley, Mrs. Nick Bravo of Modesto, Mrs. Edward Gonzales of Newman, Mrs. Hector Picos of Santa Ana, Mrs. Ernesto Rodrequez of Santa Ana, and Linda, Lillian, Ester and Elizabeth Avila of Patterson. Avila Henry E 720120 p5 More Information on Accident; Additional Information has been received regarding the death of Henry E. Avila of Santa Ana, who was killed in a recent auto accident near his home. Mr. Avila was driving a company owned pickup, and was alone at the time of the accident. The pickup collided with another vehicle, throwing him out. The pickup rolled over on him, killing him instantly. Information about the accident, as reported in last week s Irrigator, was not correct. Barsamian Harry 720406 p5 Parlier Father of Local Man Dies in Hospital; Harry Barsamian, 67, father of Andy Barsamian of 820 Madrone Lane, died Tuesday in a Selma hospital after a short illness. Funeral services will be held to tomorrow, Friday, at 10 a. m. in the Armenian Apostolic Church of Reedley, and burial will be in the Parlier cemetery. A native of Armenia, Mr. Barsamian had lived in Parlier where he was a rancher, for more than 50 years. He also is survived by his widow, Mrs. Azad Barsamian of Parlier, a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Flagler of Selma, and five grandchildren. Bento Mary A 720629 p5 Gustine Mother of Pattersonite Buried Tuesday; A requiem mass was held Tuesday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Gustine for Mrs. Mary A. Bento, 70, mother of Mrs. Gerald "Elsie" Breasher of Patterson. Burial was in Hills Ferry Cemetery. Mrs. Bento, who died Saturday in a Modesto hospital, was a native of the Azores who had lived in the Gustine area for the past 31 years. She was a member of UPPEC, SPRSI and Catholic Daughters of America. Other survivors are her three sons, Manuel, Joe and Frank Bento, all of Gustine; three other daughters, Mrs. Eva Rodericks of Gustine, Mrs. Mary Perry of San Luis Obispo, and Mrs. Josephine Pimentel of San Jose. She also leaves a brother, Manuel Silva of Tulare; three sisters, Mrs. Rosie Decoite of Palm Springs; Mrs. Pauline Decoite of Hanford, and Mrs. Eva Lucio of Tulare; 25 grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. Bettes Died Monday, Funeral Today; Funeral services will be held today at 10 a.m. at Evans Funeral Chapel for John Franklin Bettes, 71, who died Monday at his home, 317 South Fifth. A native of Norman, Oklahoma, he came to California in 1938, and has been employed as maintenance foreman at the Heinz Co. in Tracy for the past 25 years. He had lived in Patterson since his retirement eight years ago. Survivors are his sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Harrison of Phoenix, Arizona, and three brothers, Charles Bettes, and Harry Bettes of Patterson and William R. Bettes of Heavener, Oklahoma. Brewer Galen 720127 p2 Attends Funeral; Word has just reached this paper of the death of Homer Brewer s brother, Galen Brewer, who died suddenly Dec. 20 at 59 in his Paulding, Ohio, home. Mr. Homer Brewer attended the services at Paulding Methodist Church and interment in Paulding Cemetery. The Ohio man was born in Whitten, Iowa, and moved to Gettysburg with the Brewer family in 1918. He was an electrician. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Florence Brewer, in Paulding; two sons, Larry and Terry Brewer in the Paulding area; three daughters, Mrs. Nancy Eichnor of Defiance, Ohio, and Mrs. Linda Warner and Mrs. Susie, Flynn of Paulding, Ohio, and 11 grandchildren. Cabral Luiz 721012 np Services Held For Luiz Cabral; A requiem mass was celebrated at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Crows Landing on Tuesday for Luiz Cabral, 91, who died last Sunday in Del Puerto hospital alter a brief illness. Interment was at Hills Ferry Cemetery, Newman. Cabral, a native of Portugal, had lived in this area for 62 years. He operated a dairy for many years before his retirement. He leaves three daughters, two of whom are Mrs. Louise McNatt of Patterson and Aileen Cabral of Crows Landing; three sons, Joaquin of Newman, Armond E. and Joe Cabral, both of Crows Landing; 14 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Carlson Daniel G 720203 p3 Services Held at Chapel Here for Dan Carlson; Funeral services were held Jan. 24 at Evans Funeral Home for Daniel George Carlson, 58, who died suddenly Jan. 21. Burial was in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Mr. Carlson came to California 12 years ago settling in Los Angeles where he lived for two years. He moved to Tracy from the southern city and, after five years, came to Patterson where he lived for another five. He owned and operated the Western Auto Associate store. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Martha Carlson, at their 101 South Sixth Street home, and two sisters, Mrs. Violet Hennell of Whittier and Mrs. Mable Haeg of Bloomington, Minnesota. Caswell Wilburn L Rev 721207 np Final Services for Rev. Caswell Held in Turlock; Final communion services were held at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Turlock on Monday for the Rev. Canon Wilbur Larremore Caswell, 89, who died in the San Luis Rest Home last Thursday. The Rt. Rev. Victor Rivera of Fresno, assisted by Rev. James Trotter of Turlock, officiated at the service. Inurnment was in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Hackensack, New Jersey, Rev. Caswell was educated in New York, graduated from Columbia University as a Phi Beta Kappa, and became a graduate of General Theological Seminary in 1909. He served various parishes in New York before spending 26 years as pastor at an Episcopal church in Yonkers, N.Y. He retired in 1951 and came to Patterson to live with a sister, Mrs. Christian Grischott, who survives him. While here, he served as priest in charge of many Episcopal churches in the area, and was conferee of an honorary doctor of divinity degree as well as receiving a certificate of appreciation from the National Council of Protestant Episcopal Churches. Clemment Edward 720720 np Transient Found Dead under Tree in Camp Here; Edward Clement, a transient about 60 years of age, was found dead Saturday lying face down under a tree in Azevedo s Camp. He was taken to Modesto where an autopsy was to be performed to establish the cause of death. Sheriff s deputies are seeking his next of kin. Mrs. Costa, whose home was in Honolulu, died March 22. A requiem mass was said at St. Augustine Church in Honolulu, and interment was in Diamond Head Memorial Park also in that city. Cottel Louise 720511 p3 Mrs. Barsamian Attends Funeral of Mother; Mrs. Andy Barsantian of 820 Madrone Lane, has returned to Patterson after attending the funeral of her mother, Mrs. Louise Cottel, 67, who died April 29 in a Portland, Ore., hospital after a brief illness. Interment also was in Portland. A native of the Oregon city, Mrs. Cottel had lived there all her life. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She also is survived hy one other daughter, Mrs. Catherine Duus of Salem, Oregon; a son, Dr. Willis Cottel of Modesto; eight grand children, and one sister, Mrs. Henrietta Bruce of Portland. Covington Rex 720511 p4 Rex Covington to Be Buried Here Friday; Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Evans Funeral Chapel for Rex Covington, 88, who died in a Lodi rest home Tuesday. Interment will be in Patterson Cemetery. A native of New Orleans, La., Mr. Covington was a resident of Patterson for 15 years, and retired here as Southern Pacific Company agent in December, 1961. He had worked for the railroad company and for Western Union in the days when the exciting news stories were sent over the wire by Morse code. Before coming to Patterson in 1946, he was employed by stockbrokers and others in his capacity as dispatcher of Morse code. During Mr. Covington's service in Patterson, however, the automatic teletype came into being and replaced his Morse Code "bug". Mr. Covlngton is survived by his widow, Mrs. Margel Covington of Lodi; three children of his own in Chicago; two stepchildren and seven step grandchildren. Crocco James B 720810 np James Crocco Dies Suddenly in Modesto; A requiem mass was celebrated Wednesday in Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church for James B. Crocco, 84, of Modesto, brother of Mrs. Rose A. Gervasoni, 88, who died last Thursday in Modesto. Mr. Crocco died Sunday morning in a Modesto rest home. He was the brother-in-law of Attilio F. Gervasoni of 2931 E. Marshall Road, and was a son of the pioneer John Crocco family of Crows Landing. Burial was in St. Stanislaus Cemetery with Franklin & Downs Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mr. Crocco, who grew up on the Glenn Crow Ranch in Crows Landing where his father was employed, later went ranching in Modesto where he spent the remainder of his life. He was a veteran of World War I. He also was a member of Our Lady at Fatima Church. He leaves his widow, Lena Crocco of Modesto; a son, John Crocco of Modesto, five sisters, Freda Gilligan, Laura Dickinson, Ida Bassett and Amelia Schenone, all of Modesto, and Eva Fitzgerald of Sacramento two brothers, Paul Crocco of Sacramento and Andrew Crocco of Stockton; two grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Dadami Marion 721029 np Marion Dadami Dies at Home; A requiem mass was held on Tuesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Marion Dadami, 64, who died suddenly last Saturday at his home on East Las Palmas. Burial was in Patterson District Cemetery. Dadami, a native of Petaluma, had lived in Patterson for 56 years. He is survived by one brother, Peter Dadami of Patterson. Daniels Lee E 720106 p2 Lee Daniels Buried in Tracy After Local Rite; Services were held Wednesday at Evans Funeral Chapel for Lee Ernest Daniels, 20, of Laird Street, Grayson, whose body was found in an overturned car at the bottom of the Westley Waste way used to carry excess water from the Delta Mendota Canal. Burial was in Tracy Cemetery. Northbound on Cox Road near the intersection of Frank Cox Road, Daniels car left the roadway in a slight jog just before the road crosses the Waste way, hit the southeast corner of the bridge there, bending back the guard rail, and shot 23 feet through the air before landing upside down on the north bank of the Waste way. The car then slid to the bottom of the canal into a few inches of water, said deputies of the California Highway Patrol who had been called to the scene by a motorist who noticed the damage to the guard rail about noon New Year s Day and investigated to discover Daniels body in the car. Heavy fog had shrouded the area Friday night and Saturday. A native, of Los Angeles, Daniels had lived at his Grayson address for 10 years. He was employed by Patterson Frozen Foods, and had been active in assisting the Grayson Little League teams. He leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Polk of Grayson; five brothers, Eddie and Willie M. of San Francisco; Curtis James and David of Modesto; and Melvin Daniels of Compton; two half brothers, Willie James and Danny Polk, Grayson, and two half sisters, Darlene and Lulu Mae Polk of Grayson. A native of Gustine, DeLash had lived in Patterson and operated a milk distributorship before moving to the San Jose area eight years ago. He is survived by one son, David John of Patterson, two daughters, Carol Marie of Patterson and Jona Louise Foster of Modesto; two sisters, Mary Aragona of Patterson and Antoinette Latronico of Albany; two brothers, Joaquin of Patterson and Pete of San Jose. Dickinson Burton L 720217 np Navy Man Dies on Board Ship off Honolulu; Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Assembly of God Church for Chief Electronics Technician Burton Leroy Dickinson, 40, who died suddenly Feb. 10 while on board the USS Claude Jones, a Navy ship off Honolulu. He had served in the US Navy 19 years. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Judith Barletta Dickinson, two daughters, Kimberly and Shannon, and one son, Tamur, all of Orange Ave.; one sister, Mrs.. Wilhelmina Thomas of Florida, and his parents, Mr. And Mrs. Clarence Dickinson of Jacksonville, Fla. Mrs. Dickinson has requested that, instead of sending flowers, friends who wish, may make donations to the Assembly of God Church in Patterson through which the money will go to purchase a Christian and an American flag for a Church of God service men's center to be built in Pearl Harbor. Gervasoni Attilio F 720907 p1 Pioneer Gervasoni Rites Today; A requiem class was celebrated this morning, Thursday, in Oar Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, Modesto, for Attilio Frank "Jerry" Gervasoni, who was stricken at home last Sunday at the age of 95. Born in Locarno, Switzerland, he came to Crows Landing in 1893 and worked on both the Simon Newman and Cash Crow ranches before going into business for himself. In 1907 he bought the McCullough ranch on Crows Landing Road and operated his own dairy. Active as a livestock dealer, Gervasoni built a slaughterhouse on Marshall Road, and operated packing houses in Patterson and San Francisco. He also ran a few dairies, a store at the corner of Crows Landing Highway and River Road, and the Red-White Grocery Market in Patterson where the Coast to Coast store is now. Gervasont owned the property on which Catfish Camp now stands when the rivet boats docked there. Boats also docked behind his slaughterhouse when it was active. He retired in 1952. He was a long time member of the Druids Lodge in Newman and a member of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Patterson. His wife, the former Rose Crocco, died Aug. 3. Survivors include a son, Charles Gervasoni of Modesto; a grandson, two granddaughters, three great grandchildren, and sisters-in-law, Freda Gilligan, Laura Dickinson, Ida Bassett and Amelia Scheaone, all of Modesto. Gil Stricken on Job During Vacation; A requiem mass was celebrated Friday for Santos Ortis Gil, 49, of 1008 Chicago, Ave., Modesto, who was stricken with a heart attack Jan. 18 while working at 6300 West Grayson Road for Burchell Nursery of Modesto. Gil had been an employee of Holly Sugar Co. for the past four years and, while on vacation, was working for the Nursery. It was his first day of employment when the collapse occurred. Graham Gardner 721130 np Missing Man Found Dead; The body of a Turlock man missing from his home for 10 days was found last Friday morning near interstate 5 and Fink Road west of Crows Landing. He was Gardner Graham, 68, who apparently died shortly alter being missed from home Nov. 14. His body was found lying in mud where be apparently fell while walking. His auto was found in the area, stuck in the mud. His wife said he suffered from emphysema. Grunstad Roy J 720727 np Roy Grunstad Dies in Norway; Services are pending at Evans Funeral Chapel for Roy John Grunstad, 81, who died of a heart attack Saturday in Porsgrunn, Norway. Mr. Grunstad left here July 3 with his son, Bill Grunstad of Sonora, and a group of other Patterson people for a tour of Norway. A native of that Scandinavian country, he emigrated to Chicago, Illinois in 1926, and moved west to Patterson in 1930. He was employed here by the Patterson Water District and by Golden Valley Creamery, and. also was a retired rancher. He was a member of the Sons of Norway. Burial will be in Patterson District Cemetery. Hammons Danny 720713 np Danny Hammons Dies of Accident with Fireworks; Funeral services were held Friday at Salas Bros. Funeral Chapel, Modesto, for Danny Hammons, 15, who suffered fatal injuries July 4 when a home-made firecracker rocket he had just set off, embedded itself in his brain. He died July 5 at 6 a.m., a few hours afterward in a Modesto hospital. Burial was in Patterson District Cemetery. The accident occurred when Danny, who is the son of Mrs. Charlotte Evart, formerly of Patterson, was setting off firecrackers with a group of young people in the back yard of Mr. and Mrs. Billie Fredrickson, his aunt. Apparently someone had stuffed firecrackers into a six inch length of one inch pipe to make the pipe lift off, Danny volunteered to light it with a resulting explosion which drove the pipe into his head. He immediately collapsed. Besides his mother, Danny leaves his father, Harold Hammons of Texas; one brother, Dixie Hammons, stationed with the US Army in Germany; one other sister, Dawn, at home; his grandmother, Mrs. Vashti Harper of Turlock, who lived at the Van Armor Pump Station here for many yearn. According to Mrs. Lawson, sister of Mrs. Harper, the Modesto Police Department is investigating the accident in an attempt to find out who stuffed the pipe. Hedge George F 720907 np Navy Officer Hedge, 41, Dies Here Suddenly; Final rites were conducted Tuesday at the Norton Mortuary in Turlock for George Francis Hedge, 41, leading chief petty officer at the Crows Landing Naval Auxiliary Landing Field. Hedge, who was also the senior chief and the executive officer at the Naval base, died of a heart attack last Thursday, Aug. 31. Burial will take place today, Thursday, at the Hollywood Hills Cemetery, Hollywood. He was born and raised in Indiana and joined the Navy 24 1/2 years ago. He was a member of the Fleet Naval Reserve Association and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He leaves his widow, Alyce of Turlock; a son, George F. Hedge Jr. and a daughter, Paula Broiles, both of Turlock, and parents in Florida. She and her husband, Frank Joseph, came to America from Austria in 1910, settling in Colma before moving to Patterson. He was a tailor and opened a shop in town. They purchased the Eucalyptus Ave. property at this time, and after her husband s death in 1925, Mrs. Heinzle farmed the acreage and operated a dairy. Though alone, she raised three children and two grandsons. Eight years ago Mrs. Heinzle leased her land out and began to raise chickens for egg laying. She kept her own home and took care of her business interests until her recent illness. She is survived by a son, William Heinzle of Westley; two daughters, Anna Blosser of Modesto and Josephine Hobbs of Selma; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Homen Frank D 721109 p1 Collision with Truck Kills Newman Man; Frank David Homen, 1433 Orestimba Road, Newman, was killed Wednesday morning about 10 a.m. in a car-truck accident on Crows Landing Road just north of the Marshall Road intersection. Homen, 19, was westbound when his car drifted to the right, hit a soft shoulder and spun across the roadway into the path of a tractor-trailer rig driven by Calvin Coinner, 42, of Empire. The truck belonged to the Fairbanks Trucking Co. of Modesto, The car was pinned under the truck rig, and the Patterson Fire Department was called to clean up the roadway. Coinner suffered minor injuries and was treated and released at the Del Puerto Hospital. Homen was the son of Hazel Romeo, formerly of Patterson. Huffman Guy 720316 p3 Sudden Illness Kills Minister of Local Church; A funeral service was held at the Deegan Funeral Chapel, Escalon, Wednesday morning for Guy Huffman , 60, who had served as pastor of the Church of Christ here for two years. Burial was in Escalon Cemetery District. Mr. Huffman was taken suddenly ill at his Escalon home early Monday morning, and was pronounced dead on arrival at an Escalon hospital. According to a friend in Patterson he had been the victim of several bouts of illness recently. A native of Missouri, he had lived in Escalon 26 years, commuting for the past two to Patterson to conduct a morning and evening service on Sundays and an evening service on Wednesday. He. is survived by his widow, Mrs. Georgia Huffman of Escalon; two sons, Dale W. of Escalon and Donald S. Huffman of Riverbank; a brother, Willie Huffman and a sister, Miss Ira Huffman, both of Missouri. Hurd William H 721026 p1 Bill Hurd Dies at 94, Services Held Tuesday; Services were held at Evans Chapel on Tuesday for William Henry Hurd, 74, who was stricken at the Newman home of his daughter Mrs. Fern Atwood on Sunday and pronounced dead an arrival at a Turlock hospital. Internment was in the Patterson District Cemetery. Hurd, born on East Avenue near Turlock in 1877, came to Patterson as a well driller in 1910. He and its young wife, the former Eathel Osborn, daughter of Judge Henry Osborn of Atwater moved into a Tent on their South Third street property in July of that year. They were among the first settlers in the brand new community which was still largely grain fields. Though streets had been marked out, the only real building was the Del Puerto Hotel and it was still under construction. Hurd was an amateur photographer and, using a camera that required glass plates, he took numerous pictures of early Patterson scenes as mentioned in the Fast Talk column this week. His remembrances were tape recorded by the Patterson Men s Group, several years ago and are now in the local historical society s collection. He told many tales about hunting waterfowl in the area as well as recalling some of the inconveniences of living in a new town -- traveling three miles for water, having to go to Crows Landing for groceries and mail, and having no lumber available to build houses until 1911 when Yancy lumber came to town. From 1942 to 1946 Hurd served on the City Council and was an active member of the Patterson Chamber of Commerce. He was a charter member of the West Side Sportsmen s Club, a member of the Turlock Sportsmen s Club, and belonged to the Presbyterian Church. During recent years he resided for varying lengths of time with, his daughters, Mrs. Erma Eikenberry of Hilmar, and Mrs. Ella Marks and Mrs. Atwood, both of Newman. Besides his three daughters, he leaves a brother, Elmer Hurd of Turlock; a sister, Mrs. Nettie Hale of Merced; seven grandchildren and 15 great- grandchildren. A committal service was held Monday at Fort Snelling in St. Paul, Minn. Rev. Ingvoldstad served as pastor of Our Saviour s Lutheran Church in Patterson from 1940 to 1942 when he entered the U.S. Navy as a chaplain. He remained with the Navy until 1966 when he retired as a captain. After that time was associated with the American Lutheran Church Service to Military Personnel based in Minneapolis. Miranda Augustin M 721012 p1 Man Struck, Killed Crossing Highway 33; A 72 year old Patterson man, Agustin Meza Miranda, was struck and killed by a pickup truck as he walked across Highway 33 near the Liberty Super Market last Saturday just after 7 p.m. The pickup was driven by Harley England, 59, of Crows Landing. England said Miranda appeared to stop in the roadway as he was walking to the east side, then ran in front of the pickup. Miranda was pronounced dead on arrival at the Del Puerto Hospital. England was not held by city police, who investigated. A native of the Westley area, she was living in Patterson at the time of her death. Mrs. Mueller was the daughter of early day settler George Washington Hamilton, whose family settled on a ranch on McCracken Road in 1868, and Mrs. Hamilton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Fozzard. The Muellers made their home at the McCracken Rd. ranch in 1901. The Hamilton ranch started as a homestead and Mrs. Mueller s father, who attended the College of the Pacific when his father died, came home from his studies to run the 3,000 acre property on which barley and cattle were being raised. A native of Finland, Mrs. Mullally had lived in the Coast Range Mountains West of Patterson at the head of Salado Creek before moving to San Francisco with her husband, Mike Mullally, who died 10 years ago. While in San Francisco, the couple returned frequently to the Salado Canyon property. Mrs. Mullally is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Alyne Gildea of San Carlos, and four grandchildren, Ed Lisota of Patterson was one of the pallbearers at the recent rite. Mutoza, 45, sales manager and vice president of Nunes Turfgrass Nursery here. Mr. Mutoza, who had lived in Newman, collapsed during a meeting of the Newman-Crows Lauding Joint Unified School District board Monday night in Newman and, when taken to the West Side Community Hospital, was pronounced dead. He had left the meeting twice in apparent discomfort, and did not return after leaving the third time. He was found in an adjacent room, and a doctor and ambulance were summoned. The well known area man was a native of Newcastle and a former assistant manager of the First Western Bank in Gustine, now the United California Bank. He came to Patterson in December of 1963 to the position he held at Nunes Turfgrass Nursery, Inc. at the time of his death. He was a member of the board of directors of the California Landscape Contractors Association and, in 1970 was named by that organization its "Man of the Year". He also was the incoming president of the California Turf Growers Association at the time of his death and a member of its board of directors, and a trustee of the Newman-Gustine Joint Unified School District. Perkins Rosie W 720928 p1 Crash at Crossing Takes Patterson Woman; Mrs. Rosie Winifred Perkins, 53, was instantly killed about 7:45 p.m. Sunday when her car was struck by a northbound freight train on E. Las Palmas Ave. Witnesses said Mrs. Perkins, of 619 E. Las Palmas Ave., drove her car into the path of the train which officers said was traveling about 45 miles per hour. The flashing lights and bells were operating at the time, it was reported. The car was struck broadside and knocked about 90 feet up the tracks and off to the east. Mrs. Perkins' husband, a retired school teacher, died her last April. They had moved here about two years earlier after he retired from teaching in Anaheim. The Robertses celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary here in October of 1964. Mrs. Roberts was a member of the Federated Church, a past worthy matron and 50-year member of Patterson Chapter 417 Order of Eastern Star, a member of the Central California Art League, Inc., and of the Delta Art Association, and a former director of the Mother Lode Art Association. Sierra Joyce 720907 p 1 Murder Charge Brought After Woman Slain; Paul Sierra, 41, will be charged with the murder of his wife Joyce who died of knife slashes Tuesday evening at the couple s home at 209 N. Fifth St. Although police did not at first realize Sierra had apparently cut himself in the throat and leg, he was later taken to Scenic General Hospital in Modesto where he was listed in satisfactory condition. Local police were called shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday and found Mrs. Sierra dead in the house on the floor. She had been viciously cut on the face and upper body. A carving knife, supposedly the murder weapon, was found at the scene. Mrs. George Rightsell, 16606 Locust Ave. and the mother of the victim, said she received a call from Sierra asking her to clean up the house. She drove to the home and saw Gene Gomes, a friend of the Sierras, in his car talking with a neighbor. She asked Gomes to go to the door. When he did, according to the police report, Sierra answered the door and Gomes asked where Joyce was. Sierra allegedly said, "There she is. I did it." The body was on the floor fully clothed, with bloodstains through out much of the lower level of the house. . Police theorize she may have been killed in a bedroom. A stocking was found around her neck. Sierra was placed in a police car and refused to answer questions. The couple's two children, David 16, and Terry 15, were not at home at the time. The couple had been having marital problems, and Mrs. Sierra had started divorce proceedings. On Aug. 7 city police were called to the home where Sierra had locked himself and his daughter, and held off police with a rifle. His wife arrived home from work, struggled with him, and police were able to subdue him at that time. He was committed to the mental facility at Turlock for a 72-hour observation period, and was released. Mrs. Sierra was employed at Patterson Frozen Foods and her husband at a Modesto plant. In addition to her immediate family, she is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Rightsell; and brothers Stanley Rightsell of Fremont, Donald Rightsell of Patterson, and Charles Rightsell of Sacramento. Signorotti Herbert 720413 p1 Herb Signorotti Dies in Foothills Buried Here; Funeral services were held Tuesday in Evans Funeral Chapel for Herbert Signorotti, 58, who was found lying dead beside his pickup truck in the foothills west of Patterson Saturday. Burial was in Patterson District Cemetery. An apparent suicide, Signorotti, said Stanislaus County deputy coroners, had apparently shot himself in the head with a 33-30 rifle. According to his family, he had been despondent for some time because of a painful back ailment which kept him from working regularly. The well known local man had been missing since Friday morning when he had told his family he was going to visit a friend. When he did not return Friday evening, his family and friends began a search for him. Warren Fink, co-owner of the Patterson Flying Service, spotted his truck near a field road on the Gnesa Brothers Ranch in Salado Canyon three miles west of Interstate 5. A native of Grayson, Signorotti had lived in this area all his life. He had been employed as a heavy equipment operator for Genesa Brothers. Snow Jack 720323 p4 Westley Fire Death Blamed on Gasoline; The cause of the fire in the interior of an auto parked in Westley last Saturday night has been blamed on gas fumes. It took the life of a transient identified as Jack Snow, who was found in the back seat. An explosion was heard about 8:30 p.m. and several passers-by suffered minor burns attempting to get to Snow. The car was owned by another transient, Joe Truitt Rogers, 50, who police found asleep several hours later in an unused grocery store. He told officers he and Snow had run out of gas and could not get the car started. He said he had gone to sleep under a truck, and did not witness or know anything about the fire. Souza David 720810 np Stevinson Man Dies in Accident in Canyon; David Souza, 12, of Stevinson was killed at 7 p.m. Saturday when the car in which he was riding plunged out of control and 100 feet down an embankment on Del Puerto Canyon Road about two miles west of Frank Raines Park. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Del Puerto Hospital. Officers said the accident occurred about 25 miles west of Patterson, and took place on a curve where the car went over an embankment throwing out all three occupants. The other two, Lenny McKnight, 22,of Stevinson, believed to have been driving, and Terry Talaschi, 27, of Los Banos, were reported in satisfactory condition after the accident. Hospitalized after the crash were Christopher Winovich and Sam Garbini. Winovich, with multiple injuries is in the Livermore hospital, and Garbini is at the San Jose Medical Center where be was airlifted by helicopter with two broken legs. Greg Winovich and Mark and Lamoyne Thorkelson, sons or the fatally injured hunter, escaped injury. Mr. Thorkelson leaves his widow, Mrs. Julianne Thorkelson; two sons, Lamoyne and Mark mentioned above, and a daughter, Victoria Thorkelson, all of 32236 West Snyder Road, Gustine, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Thorkelson of Patterson. Torres Bernardo D 720120 p2 Murder Victim Buried Here; Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Apostolic Church in Grayson for Bernardo Duarte Torres, 36, of Modesto whose bullet-riddled body was found frozen beside a dirt road in an isolated section southeast of Grayson Friday afternoon. Burial was in Patterson District Cemetery. Detectives, from the Sheriff s Department say the slaying occurred early on the morning of Jan. 12. As this, Stanislaus County s first murder victim of the year was a narcotics user, they theorize that he may have been killed by other members of the hard drug fraternity. An autopsy revealed that three .22 caliber bullets had entered Torres chest and a fourth, his jaw. The body was discovered beside the dirt road which runs east from Shiloh Road toward the Tuolumne River by Will Ganner, Jr., who ranches at 3600 Shiloh Road. Detectives said the man had been killed at an unknown location and dumped where he was found. A young German Shepherd lay next to the body, apparently guarding it. The dead man was a truck driver who had served prison sentences for armed robbery, assault and narcotics violations, said deputies. He had told friends of planned heroin smuggling trips to Mexico. Torres was last seen alive by Cruz Diaz, 25, of Modesto, his brother-in-law, who said they had been drinking together in several downtown Modesto bars including the Nite Life where Torres reportedly beat a man he believed had been drinking with his wife. Diaz told investigators he had driven Torres to an entrance to an alley which runs west from Seventh Street, south of F Street in Modesto about 2 a.m. A native of California, Torres had been employed by the Toledo Trucking Co. in Modesto. Moving to Modesto in 1920, he entered the insurance business and continued in that occupation until 1956 when he retired. Active even after retirement, Truman was well known in investment circles and as a collector of a variety of antiques, historical mementoes, and letters from celebrities. A scrapbook containing some of his collection of letters was donated by him to the McHenry Museum of Art and History and is on display there. Truman was a member of Stanislaus Lodge 200, F&M, the Masonic Luncheon Club and the First United Methodist Church. Watson Walter L 720106 p5 Walter Watson Dies in Modesto; Funeral services were held Dec. 30 at Franklin & Downs Funeral Home for Walter L. Walkie Watson of Modesto, formerly of Patterson, who died Dec. 28 in his home after a long illness. A native of Waterford, Mr. Watson came to Patterson in 1913 and opened a pool hall and barber shop on South Third Street which he called Watson and Mack s. He later bought the Welty Hotel, also on South Third Street and converted the downstairs, which included a diningroom, into a pool hall. The Watson family moved to Modesto in 1937. He also was the owner of Jacks on Highway 99 and Walkie's on 10th Street in Modesto. Wenker Frank J 720622 p7 Frank Wenker Dies in Modesto after Illness; A requiem mass was celebrated Tuesday in Sacred Heart Church for Frank Joseph Wenker, 85, who died Friday in a Modesto hospital after a brief illness. Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery with arrangements by Carmody Memorial Chapel of Modesto. A native of Minnesota, Mr. Wenker was a ranch worker who had lived in Patterson many years. His home, at the time of his death, was the Welty Hotel. Surviving him are a brother, Willliam Wenker of Oregon and three sisters, Clare Williams of Glendora, Mrs. Joseph Eujeruer of Minnesota and Mrs. Frances Cherne of Santa Clara. Yancey Merle C Mrs 720601 p3 Newman Member of Old Family Dies at 87; Mrs. Merle C. Yancey, 87, mother of Tom Yancey who owns Yancey Lumber Co. of Patterson, and widow of John H. Yancey whose father operated the first mill and general store in Hills Ferry in 1869 and later mills in Newman, Crows Landing and Patterson, died Friday at her home in Newman. Memorial services were held Tuesday in the Orestembia United Presbyterian Church, Newman, and private burial was in Hills Ferry Cemetery. Mrs. Yancey was the great granddaughter of Don Ygnacio Martinez who was commandant of the presidio of San Francisco from 1819 to 1831, and was the third alcalde or mayor of Yerba Buena, now San Francisco. The city of Martinez was named in his honor, and some of the structures of his ranch, El Rancho Pinole, still stand in the City of Pinole. A world traveler, Mrs. Yancey was active in many civic organizations, including the Modesto and Newman Garden Clubs, Daughters of the War of 1812, Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Colonists, Order of the Eastern Star and Newman Women s Club. She also was a former member of the Modesto Symphony Guild. Surviving her also is another son, Joel H. Yancey of Sacramento; two daughters, Mrs. Madeline Cooper and Mrs. Sarah Orr, both of Modesto; a brother, Allan B. Crow of Piedmont; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The family has requested that remembrances be made to the Orestimba United Presbyterian Church. Zugnoni Lorenzo F 721214 np Zugnoni Rites to be Held Friday; A rosary be held tonight, Thursday, at 7:30 p.m. in the Evans Chapel for Lorenzo F. Zugnpni, 75, who died Tuesday morning in the local hospital after a long illness. The requiem mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday morning in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment is to be at Patterson District Cemetery. Zugnoni, a native of Mellarollo, Italy, was a retired rancher and had lived here for 35 years. He is survived by his wife Maria of Patterson; two daughters, Olga McKim of Gustine and Agnese Friedrich of Patterson; a brother, Domizo; and two sisters, Rosa and Maria, all of Italy; and a grandson, Lawrence Friedrich of Patterson. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Elsie Zugnoni.
