"Dad" Kirk, as he was familiarly called, was a real pioneer in the history and development of Patterson. He arrived here with his wife and young children on Sept. 20, 1911, about two years after the founding of the town. Born Nov. 26, 1873 at Aledo, Illinois, Kirk moved to Kansas where he was married to the former Mary Belle Dean at Troy on Oct.14, 1895. In 1899 the couple came to Fresno where they spent a year before returning to Kansas. Three years later they came back to California to stay, living in San Jose and Hollister prior to moving to Patterson. Kirk worked for the Patterson Water District as head ditch tender for two years and then for J.M. Kerr who was in the plumbing business. When Elmer Fink, Kirk s son-in-law, bought the Kerr business, he continued his employment there. It was in 1924, while Kirk and his son, Melvin, were working on the Sunflower Ranch up Del Puerto Canyon that they survived an electrical charge of 11,000 volts. They were pulling a pump and, assuming that the power was off, when the wires started to fall each caught the wires with their hands. The wires turned out to be "hot" and the electricity charged through their bodies coming out their toes. "Dad" Kirk spent nearly a year in a San Francisco hospital and had skin grafting done on his left hand and feet. When able to return to work, Kirk became city marshal and remained in that position until he ran for the office of constable. Opposed in all but one of six elections, Kirk was elected each time on the primary ballot and served from 1931 until retirement in 1955 at the age of 82. His memories of early Patterson, including tales of the knee deep mud in the streets, the volunteer firemen pulling the hose carts to a fire, the burglar caught in the act of robbing Jaderquist s store, now the Plaza Market, and the apprehension of strikers set on dynamiting the "scabs out of the Del Puerto Hotel during a shipping strike in the early 1930 s are preserved for posterity on tapes now in the possession of the Patterson Township Historical Society.
