Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Texas, be had lived in Patterson 38 years. He is survived by his wife Pagie and numerous nieces and nephews. Archa was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters and his parents. Arredondo Alex 760422 np Services Here for Alex Arredondo; Services were held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Saturday morning for Alex Arredondo, 57,who died last Thursday in a Stockton hospital following a short illness. Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Mexico, Arredondo lived in Cares from 1957-14 when he moved to Stockton. He was a psychiatric technician at the state hospital there. He is survived by his wife Dillie of Stockton, a step-daughter, Patricia Paul of Keyes; three brothers, Dave Arredondo of Crows Landing. John Figueroa of Escalon and Ross Figueroa of Los Banos; and two sisters, Mary Augustine of Los Banos and Crux Ruiz of Merced. Bizzanelli Martin 760205 np Services Held for Martin Bizzonelli; Mass of Christian burial was said Monday morning at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Martin Bizzanelli, 76, who lied Friday in a Turlock hospital following a lengthy illness. Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Italy, he had lived in Patterson since 1933. He was a retired former and a member of the Italian Catholic Federation of Gustine. Blaine Thelma 760304 np Services Today For Thelma Blaine; Services will be held today (Thursday) at 2pm in the Evans funeral chapel for Thelma Blaine, 51. Inurement will be in Patterson District Cemetery. The coroner's office ruled Mrs. Blaine's death a suicide after she disappeared in the Delta-Mendota canal Friday evening. Investigating authorities found a note in her handwriting. Her body was recovered near Los Banos on Sunday. She is survived by a son, Jim Blaine, of Patterson and a sister. Borba John T 760722 np John T. Borba Dies in Turlock; A rosary and mass were herd recently in the memory of John T Borba, who died at Emanuel Hospital, Turlock, at the age of 81. Borba, a retired cattle buyer, was a native of Pescadero. He was active in I.D.E.S. and U.P.E.C, Interment was in Hills Ferry Cemetery, Newman. Interment will be in Patterson district cemetery. A native of Kansas, he had lived here 29 years and was a retired heavy construction superintendent. Brooks William G 760205 p1 Youth Killed In Canyon Accident; Funeral services were held here Tuesday for William Gregory Brooks, 20, who was killed in Del Puerto Canyon late Sunday when the four-wheel-drive vehicle in which he was riding went out of control and tumbled down a steep hillside, crushing him beneath it. The driver of the vehicle, Donald Westbrook Jr. of Vernalis, and passengers Joe Walker of Patterson and Ted Ewalt of Modesto escaped injury when they jumped or were thrown from the vehicle. Westbrook told California Highway Patrol officers the jeep jumped out of gear when the four were returning down a steep incline about four miles into the canyon from Interstate Highway 5. Braking did no good in the dry loose dirt, and the car slid sideways add rolled over. CHP officers said the vehicle was equipped with a single roll-bar behind the drivers seat and had no seat belts. Funeral services for Brooks were held at the Evangelical Covenant Church. Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Anaheim, Brooks had lived in Patterson since 1962. He was a graduate of Patterson High School where he was active in FFA. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Brooks and five brothers, Steve, Craig, Jay, Mark and Robert Brooks, all of Patterson; two grandmothers, Mrs. Ida Moerman of Newport Beach and Mrs. Kathleen Brooks of Patterson; and an aunt Emmy Lou Schroeder, also of Patterson. The family requests that remembrances go to the Evangelical Covenant Church memorial fund where they will be channeled to serve the youth ministry of the community through the United Church programs. Brown Edwin L 760318 np Aviation Pioneer Eddie Brown Dies; Edwin Leon ‘Eddie' Brown, a Patterson resident whose fame in the aviation industry spanned five decades, died here Sunday evening of an apparent heart attack. He was 68. Graveside services are being held today (Thursday) in Grand, Kansas, Brown's birthplace. He was stricken in his home after returning from a day's festivities at the Firebaugh air show near Fresno, where he was guest of honor for the second year in a row. A pioneer aviator and test pilot, Brown had operated a custom parachute manufacturing ‘loft' in a converted garage behind his North First Street home since 1956, filling orders from exhibition jumpers throughout the world. When he went into semi-retirement two years ago, accolades poured in from military and aviation officials throughout the country, and he was awarded the first lifetime membership ever given by the United States Parachute Association. Brown began his career as a stunt-jumper in a flying circus in 1924; he quickly moved on to flying and rigging and served later as a consultant on numerous government projects, including the mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs. Brown told this writer his first jump was made with a parachute packed in ‘something that looked like a laundry bag,' and he had to walk backward along the strut and leap over the leading edge of the wing. He paid a pilot $25 for the privilege of jumping out of the aircraft; a year later he became a regular member of Fred Garber's flying Circus after Garber's wife, the regular jumper, was killed when her chute failed to open. He began rigging in 1925 and later became rigger for Sand Point Naval Air Station in Washington. He was in charge of Boeing Corporation's parachute and other survival equipment testing during World War II. Brown made his last jump in 1935 and had given up flying because of deteriorating eyesight. In his last active year as a chute manufacture, he was the top volume dealer in the world. Brown is survived by his widow, Caroline of Patterson; a sister, Blanche Clary of Patterson; a brother, Lonnie Brown of Kansas; and an adopted son, John Brown. Highway 33 in Patterson. The Stanislaus county coroner was called to the scene and an autopsy was performed. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Brunoni of Patterson, he was a Patterson native, had attended local schools and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Dompe Frank 760304 np Frank Dompe Dies After Auto Crash; Prominent West Side businessman and rancher Frank Dompe of Crows Landing, 56, died Sunday night in a Modesto hospital following injuries suffered in an auto accident near Hilmar last Wednesday night. A native of Ojai, Dompe moved to Tracy with his family when still a child. He attended schools there, graduating from Tracy High School before moving to this area in 1940. Dompe was the president of the Stanislaus County Fair board and a director of the Center State Bank in Ripon and Memorial Hospitals, Modesto. He was a member of the Crows Landing Lions club, the Modesto Elks Lodge and the California Apricot Advisory Board. Dompe also was a former trustee of the old Bonita Elementary School District. The family request that any remembrances be sent to the Memorial Fund of the Memorial Hospitals of Stanislaus County Dow John 760715 np Still No Identity John Dow; Coroners still have not determined the identity of a man fatally injured early Monday when he was struck by four cars on Highway 33 north of Fruit Avenue. The California Highway Patrol said the man, badly mangled, appeared to be of Mexican descent, but carried no identification. An attempt at identification will be made through fingerprints. Santos M. Salazar of Westley, driver of the first car to strike the victim, was southbound on Highway 33 approaching Fruit Avenue when he was the man standing in the middle of his lane. Salazar told officers he tried to swerve, but struck the man; throwing hm into the path of an oncoming vehicle driven by Russell Wayne Eberwein of Patterson. Two more cars struck the body, but only Salazar and Eberwein stopped, the CHP said. The incident occurred in pre-dawn darkness at 5:05 am. Durao Mary R 760115 np Mass Today For Mary R. Fink Esther R 760205 np Esther R. Fink Dies in Modesto; Esther H. Fink, 86, a native of Crows Landing, died last Saturday evening in a Modesto Hospital where she had been a patient for several days. She had undergone surgery after suffering injuries in a fall at home. A daughter of William F. Fine, pioneer resident of Crows Landing, she was a graduate of Munson College in San Francisco, and was employed as a bookkeeper in that city for several years. She returned to Crows Landing some 50 years ago and maintained the family home. At her request, no funeral services were held. Inurement was in Lakewood Memorial Park. He is survived by his wife, Misao of Patterson; a son, Ken Fukuhara of Los Angeles; three daughters, Kay Fukuhara of Sunnyvale, Nancy Leibowitz of Kensington and May Fukuhara of Oakland; and two brothers in Japan. Gaono Alberto R 760603 np Area Accidents Claim One Life, Injure Four; Accidents in the Patterson area have taken the life of a Riverbank man and hospitalized four West Side residents during the past week. Dead is Alberta Rodriguez Gaono, 22, of Riverbank, who was killed last Thursday when he lost control of his automobile on Highway 33 at Fruit Avenue, crossed the road and hit a utility pole. The California Highway Patrol said the car was traveling 80 to 90 miles per hour. Hospitalized were Paul Cisneroz, 21, and Alfred Armenta, 20, both of Westley, passengers in the Gaono vehicle. They were treated at Del Puerto Hospital and transferred to Scenic General in Modesto. Germolus Patricia R 760520 np Sam Germolus, Wife Killed in Alaska Crash Patricia R Germolus; Samuel Wilcox Germolus, 32, formerly of Patterson was killed in an auto accident May 8 in Alaska, it has been learned here. His wife Patricia Rose Germolus, also 32, died of injuries suffered in the same accident. She was expecting their first child. Germolus, who had served in the regular Army nine years, had been transferred to Alaska after duty in Germany where the couple was married in 1971. The driver of the other vehicle in the fatal crash on a major highway has been charged with driving while intoxicated and manslaughter. Services were held May 14 at St. Rathels Church in Goleta, with interment at Calvary Cemetery. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Ruth Germolus Buhl of Santa Barbara; brothers Charles of Santa Barbara, Rick of San Jose, Mike of Fresno, aud Leon of Pine Grove; and sister Teresa of Santa Barbara. He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Germolus. His wife is survived by her mother, Mrs. Marge Skrocki, of Syracuse, New York. Twenty-one year old Dennis Lee McCall was to be arraigned on a murder charge Wednesday afternoon in a Modesto court. Services will be held at 10 am Friday at the Evan Funeral chapel, with interment in Patterson District Cemetery. Hick is survived by his wife Edith of Salinas; a son, Ron Hicks of Patterson, a daughter, Patricia Thompson of Modesto; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren; brothers Roy, Frankie, Warren and J. D. Hicks, all of Patterson, and Boyd of Salinas; and sisters Wilfred ///Hicks of Oregon and Irma Carey of San Francisco. Floyd Hicks and his brother Roy apparently had argued with McCall inside the bar sometime earlier in the night of the fatal shooting. According to the police report, Floyd Hicks and McCall scuffed and allegedly fell to the floor about 1:30 am, and the suspect than left the building. At this point, Roy Hicks allegedly said "he's going to shoot us" to his brother, and started running down the alley between the Red Lion and the Wells Fargo Bank. He rounded the corner of the rear of the Red Lion building into another section of the alley, but his brother was shot in the back of the head as he was about two steps from making the same turn. A portion of the slug was recovered from a building in the alley. Two witnesses other than Roy Hicks reportedly were present when the single shot was fired from the car. Acting on a tip, three city police officers and two sheriff's deputies arrested McCall at 5:30am Tuesday at a private residence at 880 W. Main St. in the Turlock area. He listed his address as an apartment in Searl Manor; a .44 caliber winchester rifle believed to be the murder weapon was found in the attic by investigating officers. After McCall was advised of his rights he declined to make a statement and was booked in the county jail. He was being held without bail. McCall reportedly was employed locally, and only recently was discharged from the navy after serving at the Crows Landing base. He reportedly had relatives living in the Ceras area and was divorced. The red car may have belonged to a female friend who listed the same apartment in Searl Manor as her address. Hicks Floyd V 761216 np McCall Found Guilty of 2nd Degree Murder Floyd V Hick; Sentencing is slated for next Tuesday in Stanislaus County Superior Court for Dannie Lee McCall, 21, of Patterson. He was found guilty last week of second degree murder in the Aug. 31 fatal shooting of Floyd Vernon Hicks. Hicks, 59, was a former Patterson resident with at the time of his death made his home in Hollister. He was shot to death in the early morning hours in the alley outside the Red Lion bar On S. Third St. Roy Hicks of Patterson was with his brother Floyd on the evening of the shooting, which followed an argument earlier in the evening. McCall left the bar and returned in a car with a gun around the 2am closing time. The fatal shot from a .44 caliber rifle was fired from the car, and killed Hicks instantly. McCall took the stand in the short trial Which lasted three days. He admitted the shooting, but contended he was in a disturbed state of mind at the time, and therefore unaccountable for his actions. Maioli Hector 760101 p1 Rites Pending Here for Murder Victim; A complaint charging murder was expected to be sought late Tuesday against Willis Mays, 44, who was being held in the county jail in Modesto following the death Monday morning of Hector Maioli. Mays, who had in his possession a drivers license listing his address as Oakland, was apprehended after Maioli was found terribly beaten about the head and neck just outside the front door of the Robert Sykes residence on Webber Avenue. A neighbor who ran for help apparently witnessed the assault shortly after 8 a.m. Maioli who was 65 in August, was beaten with hands and feet and apparently bled to death. City police arrived minutes after the attack found him still alive, lying with a portion of his body on the front porch of the Sykes home. He was taken to the Del Puerto Hospital and died soon thereafter. Sheriff's deputies said Mays was unmarked. The altercation occurred just outside the Patterson city limits, and apparently followed a night of drinking. Sykes apparently had left the house earlier in the morning. Mendez Jose B 761111 np 2 Killed, 5 Injured In West Side Crashes Jose Bernadino Mendez; Two persons were killed and five injured in a rash of Patterson area automobile accidents during the past week. The dead are Jose Bernadino Mendez, 41, of Patterson and James Sebastian, 22, of Pleasant Hills, Killed in separate crashes three days apart. Funeral services are being held here this morning (Thursday) for Mendez, who was killed instantly Saturday when the auto in which he was a passenger smashed into a roadside tree. The accident occurred at 12:30 pm on Eucalyptus Avenue about one quarter of a mile west of Sycamore Avenue. The driver of the vehicle, Salvador Salazar, 23, also of Patterson, was taken to Del Puerto Hospital in critical condition and then to Scenic General Hospital where his condition was listed as satisfactory late Wednesday. The California Highway Patrol in Modesto said the westbound car apparently drifted to the left of the roadway, swerved and skidded back to the right, hitting a walnut tree with the right side of the car. The car was torn in half by the impact. Mendez, who had worked on area farms intermittently for the past 16 years, is survived by his mother, Francisa Sanchez- Mendez of Mexico and several bothers and sisters. Interment will be in Patterson District Cemetery. The accident which claimed the life of the Pleasant Hills man occurred Tuesday at about 2pm, 200 yards north of Sperry Avenue on interstate 5. Sebastian was a passenger in a car driven by Richard Dorman, 22, of Kovato, which smashed into a truck stalled on the side of the highway. Dorman suffered massive injuries and was taken to Doctors Hospital in Modesto, where he was still listed in critical condition late Wednesday. The driver of the disabled truck, Gary Judd of Hayward, said the vehicle had been repaired in Fresno earlier the same day before stalling just north of the Sperry Avenue on-ramp to the freeway. Judd said he had left the truck to go to a service station at Ingham Creek and returned to find the accident. In a spectacular but less serious accident, a rented truck was destroyed shortly after midnight Sunday when a tire blew out and the southbound truck crossed the divider and the northbound lanes and catapulted over an embankment, bursting into flames. Neal Norma J 760205 p1 Gunshot Kills Young Patterson Mother; City police are still investigating, but have ruled that a gunshot here Monday that took the life of Norma jean Neal, 18 was accidental. The young woman was killed instantly about 2:45pm Monday by a shot from a 9mm pistol at the home of Mrs. And Mrs. Glen Doss, 516 N. Third St. She lived at the home, and was a sister of Mrs. Doss, a local teacher. Doss told authorities his sister-in- law was unloading books and placing them on a shell in the basement when. the gun he was holding accidently discharged. He said he had taken out the clip and ejected the shells when he discovered the cocked hammer of the pistol would not release. He then re-inserted the clip and the pistol suddenly discharged from where he was sitting on a bed in the basen1ent. The bullet struck the woman in the left side below the arm, and entered her heart. Norma Jean Neal had lived five months in Patterson, and had been employed at Doss insurance office in downtown Patterson. She is survived by her young daughter, Audra Renee Neal, who was at the home of a local babysitter at the time of the shooting; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Neal of Lexington, Ky.; two brothers; and five sisters including Mrs. Martha Doss. Polk Taylor 760401 np Body of Oakland Man Is Found In Canyon; A body found in a ravine near Frank Raines Park in Del Puerto Canyon Saturday afternoon has been identified as Talor Polk, 31, of Oakland. Sheriff s detectives said the body was discovered wrapped in plastic near the east entrance of the county park. He died of gunshot wounds. The investigation is centering on the Oakland area, where Polk was a college student. It is suspected that he was killed elsewhere more than a week ago and brought to the canyon. Sabastian James 761111 np 2 Killed, 5 Injured In West Side Crashes; Two persons were killed and five injured in a rash of Patterson area automobile accidents during the past week. The dead are Jose Bernadino Mendez, 41, of Patterson and James Sebastian, 22, of Pleasant Hills, Killed in separate crashes three days apart. Funeral services are being held here this morning (Thursday) for Mendez, who was killed instantly Saturday when the auto in which he was a passenger smashed into a roadside tree. The accident occurred at 12:30 pm on Eucalyptus Avenue about one quarter of a mile west of Sycamore Avenue. The driver of the vehicle, Salvador Salazar, 23, also of Patterson, was taken to Del Puerto Hospital in critical condition and then to Scenic General Hospital where his condition was listed as satisfactory late Wednesday. The California Highway Patrol in Modesto said the westbound car apparently drifted to the left of the roadway, swerved and skidded back to the right, hitting a walnut tree with the right side of the car. The car was torn in half by the impact. Mendez, who had worked on area farms intermittently for the past 16 years, is survived by his mother, Francisa Sanchez-Mendez of Mexico and several bothers and sisters. Interment will be in Patterson District Cemetery. The accident which claimed the life of the Pleasant Hills man occurred Tuesday at about 2pm, 200 yards north of Sperry Avenue on interstate 5. Sebastian was a passenger in a car driven by Richard Dorman, 22, of Kovato, which smashed into a truck stalled on the side of the highway. Dorman suffered massive injuries and was taken to Doctors Hospital in Modesto, where he was still listed in critical condition late Wednesday. The driver of the disabled truck, Gary Judd of Hayward, said the vehicle had been repaired in Fresno earlier the same day before stalling just north of the Sperry Avenue on-ramp to the freeway. Judd said he had left the truck to go to a service station at Ingham Creek and returned to find the accident. In a spectacular but less serious accident, a rented truck was destroyed shortly after midnight Sunday when a tire blew out and the southbound truck crossed the divider and the northbound lanes and catapulted over an embankment, bursting into flames. The occupants, Gary and Mary Tripp, both 26, of Riverside, were treated at Del Puerto Hospital and released the same day. The Soares' celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in 1974. Active in community affairs, Soares was a director of the Patterson Water company five years, a director of the Patterson-Westley Chamber of commerce and served as a fondling director of the Patterson Hospital District.
