According to the California Highway Patrol, the five other young persons escaped with moderate injuries but Miss Jones was killed when she was knocked unconscious and was trapped inside the car when it burst into flames. The CHP said that Eric Green, 17 of Ceres, was driving the car eastbound on Del Puerto Canyon road about 11 pm when it went off the north side of the road, struck a tree, and rolled down the embankment, ending up on its side. Two passengers in the car, Randy Wakefield, 21, and Sharon Neal, 15, both of Ceres, were thrown clear of the car as it went over the embankment. A pumper and a rescue truck with the "jaws of life" was dispatched by the Patterson Fire Department, but by the time firemen arrived on the scene the fire was out and the car burned to the frame.
