Benke Randall 800417 p1 Bombs Stayed Put... One Killed in Bomb Truck I-5 Accident near Westley; A fiery crash involving three trucks - one carrying 18 2,000-pound military bombs - claimed the life of one man, injured two others and gave local firemen and paramedics some anxious moments early Monday on Interstate 5 a half mile south of the Westley off-ramp. The accident occurred in the northbound lanes at about 4:15 a.m. when a truck rig driven by Randall Benke, 35, of Glendale, struck the left rear of the bomb truck, tearing the right half of the cab off Benke s vehicle. A witness said Benke jumped from the truck enveloped in flames, stumbled to the edge of a roadside orchard and fell. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Although the bomb-carrier was struck with enough impact to bend the trailer frame, officials of the Army s explosives ordnance unit of the Presidio of San Francisco said there was no danger of explosion after the initial impact. None of the bombs, which are shipped without detonators, were dislodged from the truck. They were moved on their pallets, which were still intact, to another truck and taken to a Navy installation in Concord. Northbound lanes were reopened in a short time; southbound traffic was detoured for several hours at Sperry Avenue while crews mopped up the wreckage. The driver of the bomb truck, Wiley Clark. and his passenger, Juan Ramos, both employees of Tri-State Trucking, were not injured. A passenger in the Benke truck, Michael Reynolds, was thrown through the windshield and landed on the bombs at the rear of the truck. After emergency attention by paramedics from Del Puerto Hospital, he was taken to Doctors Hospital in critical condition. He was listed in serious condition Wednesday, still in an intensive care unit. The driver of the third truck, Anthony Brashear, was taken to Del Puerto Hospital with broken ribs and other injuries and was released Tuesday afternoon. Baldwin told officers he was following from the south when the accident occurred. He attempted to avoid the crash scene, but the truck flipped, leaving one trailer across the fast lanes, when it hit spilled diesel fuel. First at the scene was a seven-member crew from the Westley station of the West Stanislaus Fire Protection District. The caller had said only that there was a "truck fire" on the freeway, according to Chief Richard Gaiser, who said the firemens first concern was for the unknown contents of the burning Benke rig. Although the truck manifest was lost in the wreckage, firefighters located an attache case with bills of lading showing the contents to be paper bags. Assistant Westley Chief Hito Murata learned from the driver of the explosive contents of the rig sitting about 100 feet away, sent a call to Patterson for additional help with the fire and for medical help. Inmates from the Stanislaus County Honor Farm at Laird Park helped firefighters unload the tons of paper bags to allow firemen to finally quench the blaze near the front of the rig. Gaiser praised the prompt action of Murata and fellow volunteers Mike Lara, Bill Cox, Richard Lana, Javier Lomeli, Gene Bays and Fred Lara. "Considering there were originally only seven guys from Westley, I think they did a helluva good job trying to help the injured as best they could, getting more help and working on the fire all at the same time," he said. Minutes after the arrival of the firemen, Del Puerto ambulance supervisor Jeff Linzer and paramedic intern Mike Walters skirted the one-mile back-up of traffic, squeezed the ambulance between the truck wreckage and climbed atop the bombs to minister to Reynolds, who, Linzer said, was in "serious trouble." Reynolds was moved by the two paramedics and two volunteer firemen to the ground, where he was given additional emergency attention and rushed to the hospital. The paramedics returned to the scene to re-check those involved in the truck fire before going hack to Del Puerto Hospital.
