Agundez Enrique G 830815 np Graveside Rites this Morning for Enrique Agundez; A graveside service with military rites will be held this morning, Monday, at 10 o clock at the Patterson District Cemetery for Enrique Gastelun Agundez. He died last Thursday, Aug. 11, in Redwood City at age 73. A native of San Jose, he was a Grayson resident for 21 years before moving to Watsonville in 1969. He was a retired mechanic, and at one time was a master mechanic for the Chrysler Corp. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War H as an MP. A funeral service was held at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Grayson Apostolic Assembly Church where he was a member. Survivors include his wife, Juana E. Agundez of Watsonville two sons, Daniel Agundez of Turlock and David Agundes of Lathrop; one daughter, Sandra Varela of Gilroy; four brothers, Afredo of El Centro, Lauro of Westmoreland, Jose of Brawley, and Juan Agundez of Los Angeles; 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Habling Family Funeral Home of Gilroy. Arthur James G 830602 np James Arthur, 19, Killed in Crash; A young Modestan who lived in Patterson several years ago was killed in a traffic accident late Saturday night. James Gilbert Arthur, 19, was killed when the motorcycle he was riding collided with an auto on Yosemite Boulevard in Modesto. A 17-year-old passenger on the motorcycle was injured when a car turned in front of them. The accident is under investigation. A funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon in Franklin & Downs Chapel in Modesto. Burial was private. He was a native of New York who had lived for 17 years in California. He attended elementary school here before moving to Modesto with his family about eight years ago. He attended Beyer High School and was a student at Modesto Junior College at the time of his death. Survivors include his parents, Robert and Joan Arthur of Modesto, who formerly owned the Western Auto Store here; brothers Robert J. of Modesto and Richard of San Jose; a sister, Barbara Garcia of Modesto; and grandparents Alice Summers of England and Tom and Rose Battram of Canada. Balcom Glen P 830908 np Glen Balcom Service Is Slated Today; A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Thursday, for longtime Patterson resident Glen Paris Balcom. He died Tuesday at his home here after a long illness. He was 84. The Rev. Richard Kelly will officiate the service at the Covenant Church. A native of Ragan, Nebraska, he had lived in Patterson since 1941, coming from Kansas. He was an engineer with Foremost Dairy Co. for 44 years prior to his retirement. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and the Covenant Church. Survivors include his wife, Bessie Balcom of Patterson; two sons, Glen 0. Balcom, Jr. of Hermiston, Oregon and George H. Balcom of Cottonwood, Arizona; four daughters, Lois English of Patterson, Evelyn Corbin of San Jose, Mary Smith of Winters, and Nancy Clary of Corpus Christi, Texas; one sister, Lela Davia of Persia, Iowa; 15 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. Banda Gonzalo 830801 np Final Rites Set for Gonzalo Banda, 70; Final rites are slated for Gonzalo Banda, 70, who died Saturday at Doctors Hospital in Modesto after a long illness. He was 70. A native of Texas, he moved to the Patterson area from that state in 1956 and was employed by farm labor contractor Juan Salinas. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A rosary will be recited tonight, Monday, at 7 p.m. at the Evans Funeral Chapel. A Mass will be said Tuesday at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, with burial to follow in Patterson District Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Antonia Banda of Patterson; one daughter, Mary Molina of Patterson; one son, Raul Banda of Grayson; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Simona Banda of Texas and Mosa Mounoz of Merced; and two brothers, Angel Banda and Cayetano Banda Jr., both of Texas. Barlett Gussie M 830804 np Service Held for Gussie Mae Bartlett; A funeral service was held here Wednesday morning for longtime Patterson resident Gussie Mae Bartlett who died Sunday at the San Luis Convalescent Hospital in Newman. She was 72. She moved to Patterson in 1952 from her native state of Arkansas and worked at Patterson Frozen Foods. She was affiliated with the Baptist Church here. A funeral service was held at Evans Funeral Chapel with Eugene Greenfield of Fremont officiating. Burial was in Patterson District Cemetery. Survivors include her husband, Roy Bartlett of Patterson; three sons, Haskell Bartlett of Patterson, Don Bartlett of Montana, and Ronnie Bartlett of Nevada; two daughters, Shirley Ericsen of Lake Forest, Calif. and Dixie Souza of Gustine; 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren; seven sisters, Mildred Newman of Planada, Robbie Stevenson of Modesto, Docha Sperry of Fresno, Pauline Mayfield of Arkansas, Jean Reynolds of Modesto, Helen Faulkner of Madera, and Melva Hanson of Wyoming; and one brother, Davis Hatchett of Patterson. Bettencourt Wanda L 830331 np Mass Held for Wanda Bettencourt; Final rites were held early this week for Wanda Lou Bettencourt, 56, who died last Thursday at her home in Turlock after a long illness. A rosary was recited Sunday evening at the Allen Mortuary in Turlock, and a Mass was said Monday morning in the Sacred Heart Church here, where she was a member. Burial was in Patterson District Cemetery. She was a native of Missouri and had lived in the Modesto area since 1943. She recently moved to Idaho, but returned to Turlock because of ill health. She had been employed at Hauck s Pharmacy and Boies Drug Store in Turlock, as well as Memorial Hospital in Ceres. Survivors include her husband, Joe Bettencourt of Idaho; a daughter, Shelly Dinkle of Indiana; three brothers, Don Harper of Stockton, Jim Harper of Modesto, and Nelson Harper of Cypress; two sisters, Charlotte Lawson of Modesto and Sandy Swanson of Denair; her mother, Vashti Harper of Turlock; two grandchildren; and an aunt, Avice Lawson of Patterson. She was preceded in death in November by another sister, Martha Ferris of Stockton. Bettes Harold E 830707 np Son of Local Couple Dies in Colorado; Harold Edward Bettes Sr. of Durango, Colo, died there June 11. Bettes is the son of Patterson area residents Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bettes. He was 61 years old. Bettes was born Jan. 19, 1922 in Omega, Okla. He married Ada "Jewell" Smith on June 7, 1942. He was involved in oil field manufacturing; was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Sunset Heights Church of Christ. Bettes is survived by his wife and one son, Harold Edward Bettes Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colo., and one daughter, Myndi Smith of Odessa; and four grandchildren. Blakely Harold 830714 np Harold Blakley Dies after a Long Illness; A graveside service will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Patterson District Cemetery for the Rev. Harold Blakley who died Saturday at Del Puerto Hospital after a long illness. He was 71 years old. Blakley was a native of Kansas and settled in Santa Cruz before coming to Patterson in 1967. He was a retired colonel in the United States Air Force chaplaincy and also served in the California National Guard. chaplaincy. He was chaplain to VA hospitals in the Bay Area. Blakley was ordained a deacon in Boston in 1937 and was ordained an elder in the Southern Indiana Conference. He was the second Protestant chaplain at Castle Air Force Base. He served as minister in churches in Indiana, Hughson, Oakland, Merced, Santa Cruz, Selma, Chowchilla, Le Grand and at the Federated Church in Patterson. Blakley retired in 1975 but still was active in the ministry in local area churches. He is survived by his wife Catherine Blakley of Vernalis; one son, David Blakley of Oregon; two daughters, Betty Babeyea of Virginia and Kimberly Blakley of San Francisco; two brothers, Cecil Blakley of Arkansas and Claude Lewis Charmasson of Oklahoma, and five grandchildren. The Reverends John Dotson and Gary Grundman will officiate at the graveside service. A memorial service will follow at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Federated Church here. It is asked that remembrances be sent to the Federated Church. Bondietti Mario 831017 np Service Slated Tuesday for Mario Bondietti; Longtime Patterson resident Mario Bondietti, who died suddenly Friday evening, will be buried Tuesday. A graveside service is scheduled for Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Patterson District Cemetery. Bondietti, who was 63, was returning from the high school football game in Hilmar when he suffered an apparent heart attack. He was born in Hollister but had resided here since he was an infant. He graduated from Patterson High School in 1940, and there developed a lifelong interest in athletics. He had bean a warehouseman at Patterson Frozen Foods the past 28 years. Survivors include his wife, Sue, of Patterson; a brother, Vicio Bondietti of Fresno; and a sister, Erseila Ielmini of Patterson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrance donations be sent to the athletic fund at Patterson High School. The Evans Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Bradford Mable F 830926 np Graveside Rites for Mabel Bradford; A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 10 am, at the Patterson District Cemetery for Mabel Frances Bradford. She died Saturday at Scenic General Hospital in Modesto after a short illness. She was 72. A native of Indiana, she had resided in Patterson the past 15 years after moving here from Michigan. Survivors include her husband, Jim Bradford of Patterson; a son, Melvin McNutt of Sterling, Kansas; three daughters, Phyllis Boughton and Velma Panzer, both of West Corvina, Calif., and Joann Newman of Minneapolis, Minn; nine grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Bravo Joe A 830421 np Final Rites Said for Joe Bravo; Final rites were said Wednesday for Joe Alaya Bravo who died Sunday after being rushed to Del Puerto Hospital. The Ventura native was 61, and had resided in the Westley area since 1945. He was a ranch manager for over 20 years employed by Sabiatino Farms. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran who served in World War II and was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Patterson. A rosary was recited Tuesday evening at the Evans Funeral Chapel. A Mass was said Wednesday morning at Sacred Heart Church by the Rev. Thomas Cargo. Burial followed in Patterson District Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Betty Bravo of Modesto; two sons, Arthur of Stockton and David Bravo of Modesto; four daughters, Joanne Gonzalez of Patterson and Gloria Smink, Rachel Bravo and Susana Bravo all of Modesto; three brothers, Tony Bravo of Westley, Manuel Bravo of Modesto. and Henry Bravo of Moorpark; and 11 grandchildren. Callagy James E 830630 np Final Rites Set for James Callagy; Final rites will be said today, Thursday, for 80-year-old James Eugene Callagy who died Sunday at Del Puerto Hospital following a long illness. A native of Iowa, he moved to the Patterson area in 1975 from Bakersfield, where he previously had retired from the real estate business. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Knights of Columbus, and the Elks Lodge. The Rev. Tom Cargo will officiate at the rosary and Mass to be held at 9 a.m. today, Thursday, at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow in Patterson District Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mary Callagy of Patterson; two sons, Michael James Callagy of Bakersfield and Patrick Joseph Callagy of Kansas City, Mo.; three sisters, Mary Corrothers of Kansas, Rose Hartwell of Bass Lake, Calif.; and Lillie Russell of Pond, Calif.; two brothers, George Callagy of Cupertino and Edward Callagy of San Marcos; and five grandchildren. Cannon Charles F 830623 np Father Cannon Dies in Missouri Hospital; A memorial service will be held here in early July for the Rev. Charles F. Cannon, C.M., who died last Saturday evening, June 18, in Perryville, Missouri. He was 72. Final rites were recited Tuesday in Perryville. Cannon served Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Patterson from 1967-70. While here he was popular in the community and worked within the Patterson Ministerial Association, which he helped to reactivate, to initiate the now annual ecumenical Thanksgiving service. The first such service was held at Sacred Heart and proved to be very successful. He was very popular with the youth of the church and influenced the lives of many. Cannon was born in Ivesdale, Illinois in 1911 and was ordained there in 1938. Cardoso Jose V 830811 np Final Rites Held for Jose Cardoso; A Mass will be celebrated today, Thursday, for Jose Vasco Cardoso, 57, who died Monday in a Turlock hospital after a short illness. A native of the Azores, he had lived in the Turlock and Modesto areas since 1962 and had been employed in farming. He was known by many in the Patterson area. A rosary was recited Wednesday evening at the Allen Mortuary in Turlock. A Mass will be said today at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Assumption of the Portuguese Church, with burial to follow in Turlock Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife Maria of Modesto; five sons, Joe, Edward, John and Anthony of Modesto and Emanuel Cardoso of Patterson; six daughters, Lydia Huggins, Trisha Spears and Natalina, Carmen, Rose and Denise Cardoso, all of Modesto; three sisters, Maria Borges of Ceres, Beatrice Matos of Riverbank, and Maura Lino of Denair; three brothers, Mario Cardoso of Turlock, Manuel Cardoso of Modesto, Ernest Cardoso of Half Moon Bay; and seven grandchildren. Cardoza Tony V 830801 np Final Rites in San Mateo for Anthony Cardoza; Former Pattersonite Anthony "Tony" V. Cardoza was buried Saturday in San Mateo after his death earlier in the week at age 64. The Modesto native formerly worked for the late Lyle Johnson in his petroleum products business before moving to San Mateo 28 years ago. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church when he resided here. He had been an equipment operator for the city of San Mateo. He died last Tuesday, July 26. Burial was in Skylawn Cemetery in San Mateo. Survivors include his wife, Beverly Cardoza of San Mateo; a son, Anthony Cardoza of Massachusetts; a daughter, Kathy Wolf of Minnesota; a sister, Betty Padal of San Carlos; a brother, Manuel Cardoza of Patterson; and six grandchildren. Chavez Dies Here after a Sudden Illness; Longtime Patterson resident Eulogio R. Chavez died last Thursday here after a sudden illness. A rosary was recited Friday at Evans Funeral Chapel with a Mass said Saturday morning at Sacred Heart Church. The 83 year old Chavez was a native of Teocaltiche, Jalisco, Mexico. He lived in Turlock before moving to Patterson in 1948. He was a section foreman for more than 52 years at the Southern Pacific Railroad before retiring. Chavez was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus at Sacred Heart Church where he was a member, and was a gardener for the church for many years. He is survived by his wife Ramona Chavez of Patterson; two sons, Edmundo of Oxnard and Gabriel of Nevada City, Calif; one daughter, Dolores Chavez of San Jose; a sister, Petra Chavez of Mexico, and four grandchildren. Cochran Lester R 830919 np Lester Cochran Is Buried Saturday; A funeral service was held Saturday morning at the Evans Funeral Chapel for longtime West Side resident Lester Robert Cochran. He was 74. He died early Wednesday morning after being rushed to the Del Puerto Hospital from his Patterson home. Rev. Lawrence Sailer officiated the service. Burial followed in the Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Illinois, he had farmed on the West Side before retiring -- first residing in the Vernalis area and then in Patterson. He was a member of the Stanislaus County Farm Bureau and of TriValley Growers. Survivors include his wife, Anna Mae Cochran of Patterson; a daughter, Goldie Agadoni of San Gabriel; three brothers, Clarence, Harley and Lloyd Cochran, all of Knoxville, Illinois; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Correia Charles E 830307 np Private Rites Are Today for C. Correia; A private funeral service will be held today, Monday, for Charles Edward Correia. He died at his Patterson home Friday at the age of 74. A native of Atwater, he moved here in 1917 with his family. He operated an ice business in Westley until 1934, and opened the Charles Correia Clothing store here soon after the local J. C. Penney store closed its doors. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Patterson Township Historical Society. A rosary was held Sunday evening at the church. Burial will be in Patterson District Cemetery. Costa Gerald J 830721 np Service Held in Sacramento for Gerald Costa, 60; A funeral service was held Wednesday in Sacramento for Patterson native Gerald J. Costa who died Sunday at age 60. He resided here until the mid 1950s when he moved to Modesto. He resided in the Sacramento area since 1960. He was an engineer working in heavy construction in the Patterson, Modesto and Sacramento areas, and was a member of Operating Engineers Union No.3. The service was held Wednesday morning at East Lawn Mortuary in Sacramento. Burial was in East Lawn Sierra Hills Memorial Park, also in that city. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Costa of Rancho Cordova; two sons, Stephen Costa of Sacramento and Mark Costa of San Diego; one sister, Cecelia Andersen of Sacramento; one brother, Donald Costa of Manteca; and one granddaughter. Cotta Frank P 831107 np Final Rites Set for Frank Cotta, 83; Final rites will be held early this week in Newman for Frank Pedro Cotta, 83. He died Sunday at the San Luis Convalescent Hospital in Newman after a long illness. A native of the Azores, he had been a West Side resident for over 50 years and made his home in Crows Landing. He was a retired dairyman. He was a member of the D.D.E.S., S.E.S., Knights of Columbus, and Newman 50-Plus Club. A rosary will be recited Monday at 8 p.m. at the Evans-Krieger Funeral Chapel in Newman. with a Mass slated for 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joachim s Catholic Church in that City. Burial will be in Hills Ferry Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Mayme Cotta of Crows Landing; one son, Manuel Cotta of Newman; a daughter, Evangeline Deenie Allen of Santa Cruz; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren; and one brother, Manuel Cotta of the Azores. Cowan Barbara G 830707 np Service Held Today for Barbara Cowan; Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, at 11 am, at the Hotchkiss Mortuary in Tracy for Barbara Gabrielle Thoming Cowan who died Monday. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 a.m. at St. Bernard s Catholic Church in Tracy. A rosary was recited last evening at the church. Cowan was a 24 year old Modesto native who resided in the Tracy-Vernalis area all her life. She was a graduate of New Jerusalem Grammar School, Tracy High School, Chico State and California State College Stanislaus. She was employed as the manager of the Westley Triangle Restaurant on Interstate 5 at Westley. Cowan is survived by her husband Jim Cowan, parents Bertha and Ed Thoming and two brothers, Jim and John Thoming, all of Tracy. Interment will be at Tracy Public Cemetery. Cusenza Joseph F 831103 np Roof Collapse Victim Dies from Injuries; Joseph Frank Cusenza, 47, of Ceres, died last Wednesday, Oct. 26, from injuries he suffered when a roof collapsed on him Sept. 21 at a dairy east of Grayson. Cusenza was dismantling a building at a Dos Rios Road dairy when the structure suddenly collapsed. Four-year-old Greg Gomes was inside the building but scrambled away unscathed. Cusenza was pulled free by rescue workers who also brought him back to life some 30 minutes later using cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Rescue workers from Westport and West Stanislaus Fire Protection district aided in the effort. He was then airlifted to Memorial Hospital/Medical Center by Medi-Flight helicopter where he remained in critical condition until his death last week. Cusenza, a Monterey native, had lived in Ceres 35 years and worked in farm management at the River Vu Ranch. He was also a real estate broker for 10 years and owned Hacienda Properties. He was a member of the Board of Realtors and the Sportsmen of Stanislaus. Daily Louis W 831124 np Funeral Slated Wednesday for Louis Daily, 79; A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Evans Funeral Chapel for Louis W. Daily who died Sunday at Del Puerto Hospital after a short illness. He was 79. He was a native of Nebraska and had moved to Patterson in 1913. In 1943 he moved to Crows Landing. Before retiring he was a foreman for Franceschini Ranches on the West Side. The Rev. Gary Grundman will officiate the service. Burial will follow in Patterson District Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Ada Daily of Crows Landing; four daughters, Janice Goggins of Modesto, Joyce Mendosa of Turlock, and Joan Couch and Jean Sublett, both of Reno, Nevada; two sisters, Stella Anderson of Patterson and May McGill of Modesto; nine grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Decker; A private service was held in Modesto for Marion Estelle Decker of Patterson who died Tuesday in a Modesto Hospital Burial was also private. Decker, a 51 year old native of San Francisco, lived in Patterson since 1978 and had been employed as a nurse at St. Joseph s Hospital in Stockton and Del Puerto Hospital here. She was a member of the Federated Church and World War I Veterans Auxiliary of Modesto. She leaves her husband Leon Decker of Patterson; four sons, Mark Jones of Escondido, Michael Jones of Washington and Alfred and Larry Jones, both of Patterson; three daughters, Janeen Banta of Virginia, Helene Decker of New York and Aleen Jones of Escondido; and her mother and stepfather Helen and Bill Stephens of Patterson. DeRose Francis G 831201 np Service Held for Francis DeRose; A prayer service was held Tuesday afternoon at the Evans Funeral Chapel for Francis Garcia DeRose who died at his Grayson home early Sunday of a sudden illness. He was 66. A native of Pico, The Azores, he had lived in this area the past four years, moving here from Taunton, Mass. He worked as a station attendant at Big Valley Auto-Truck Plaza on Interstate 5. He was a United States Army veteran who served in World War II. The Rev. James Connors officiated at the service. Interment will be in St. Joseph s Cemetery in Taunton, Mass. Survivors include his wife, Arlene DeRose of Grayson; one son, Francis DeRose, Jr. of Massachusetts; two daughters Arlene Guionar of Grayson and Ann Mickman of Massachusetts; and four grandchildren. Dihel Ruth E 831006 fp Ruth Dihel Service Is Friday; A graveside service will be held Friday for longtime West Side resident Ruth E. Dihel who died Tuesday at Del Puerto Hospital after a long illness. She was 87. She was a native of Crows Landing and was born May 14, 1896. Since 1926 when her husband died, she owned and operated farming acreage around the Crows Landing area. She was a member of the Orestimba United Presbyterian Church in Newman. The Rev. Paul MacMurray of Newman will conduct the graveside service at 10 a.m. Friday at Hills Ferry Cemetery near Newman. A memorial service will follow at 10:30 a.m. at the church where she was a member. Survivors include two nieces, Charline Slone of Patterson and Geraldine Edwards of Santa Cruz. Draghi Hilda T 830725 np Funeral Service this Evening for Hilda Draghi, 61; A funeral service will he held today, Monday, for Hilda Teleen Draghi, 61. She died Saturday at her Adobe Valley home after a long illness. A native of San Jose she lived the last 18 years in Adobe Valley, moving there from the San Antone Valley. A funeral service will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at the Evans Funeral Chapel in Patterson. Khaleck Tim 830303 np Stockton Man Killed in Hwy. 132 Accident; A Stockton man was killed Sunday night around 7:25 near Vernalis when the car he was riding in was struck by another vehicle at River Road and Highway 132. Tim Khaleck, 39, was in the front passenger seat of a car driven by Chan Vongsa, 31, of Stockton which was entering Highway 132 from River Road. Vongsa apparently didn t see a westbound car driven by Alvaro Rodrigues, 44, of Banta, which slammed into the side of the Vongsa vehicle. Vongsa was charged with misdemeanor manslaughter, according to the California Highway Patrol officers in Modesto. Firefighters from various West Stanislaus County Fire Protection stations were dispatched to the scene of the mishap. County dispatchers apparently called out a Modesto ambulance company instead of Patterson Paramedics which delayed the arrival of medical personnel, according to fire officials. Khaleck was taken by Medi-Flight ambulance from the accident scene to Memorial Hospital where he died an hour later. Also injured were Maria Rodrigues, 46, Filomena Rodrigues, 14, and Lucy Rodrigues, 11, all from Banta, who were taken by ambulance to Scenic Hospital in Modesto. Kilburn William M 830428 np William Kilburn Dies in Vallejo; Word has been received here of the death of William M. Kilburn, 74. He died last Wednesday in Vallejo after a long illness. A native of Newman, he was a member of a pioneer family with deep roots in California. He moved to Vallejo in 1928 and worked at Mare Island Naval Shipyard for more than 30 years before retiring as a supervisor in the public works department. He was an ardent outdoors man and was active in Cal Trout, a conservation organization. He was a past exalted ruler, 1948-49, of Vallejo Lodge No. 559. B.P.O.E., and a past president of the Vallejo 20-30 Club. He also belonged to Vallejo Chapter No. 16 of NARFE. DR REIMER, a native of Los Angeles, took his undergraduate work at Stanford University and graduated from the Duke University Medical School in 1942. He interned at the Santa Barbara County Hospital for one year after his marriage. He then served in the U.S. Navy for three years and was assigned to the USS Lardner. His first private practice was in Escondido before moving to the Westside Hospital south of Newman where he was a general and orthopedic specialist for five physicians. A year later he set up his practice of medicine in Patterson. His first office was in the Del Puerto Theater where he used the foyer to examine and treat patients. He then became associated with Dr. Vernon Goutiere and built an office on Las Palmas Avenue. He later had an office built on Salado Avenue where he practiced until his retirement. Rodriguez Fructoso P 830120 p1 Wednesday Crash Claims One Life; A single car accident Wednesday morning on East Las Palmas Avenue took the life of Fructoso Pesina Rodriguez, 34. He was killed instantly when his east-bound car left the roadway and struck a palm tree. The cause of the accident was unknown. But a couple living near the scene of the crash, between Elm Avenue and the San Joaquin River bridge, said that two dogs were observed in the roadway just after the auto was heard smashing into the tree on the south side of the roadway. Rodriguez may have swerved to miss the animals. Skid marks were not observed until the car left the pavement. The accident occurred about 8 a.m.. A native of Texas, he had resided here most of his life. For the past 10 years he was a mechanic for Bonander Pontiac in Turlock. Thurman John 830728 np Heart Attack Is Fatal to Thurman; Longtime district Assemblyman John Thurman died suddenly Wednesday at 12:47 p.m. in Modesto of a massive heart attack. Thurman, 63, suffered the attack at 11:30 at his Thurman and Ramos Consulting firm office on Coffee Road across the Street from Memorial North Hospital. He was rushed to the hospital and given cardiopulmonary resuscitation but died more than an hour later. The life long Democrat in recent months was an agriculture consultant with his former administrative. aide Monica Ramos. He retired from politics in Sacramento last year and was replaced when Gary Cordit was elected to the Assembly seat: Thurman had suffered a minor heart attack last year. Thurman started his political career more than 25 years ago when he served on a local Stanislaus County school board. He left that position after 10 years and was elected to the county board of supervisors. He then ran and won a seat in the state Assembly where he remained for 10 years. At one time he ran unsuccessfully for the local state senate position. Thurman, a former dairyman who was raised in the Jennings School area, told the Irrigator in November that he was somewhat relieved to be leaving the daily pressure of the capitol building in Sacramento. "I got tears in my eyes the other day when I went into my office in Sacramento and saw the movers picking all my things," Thurman said in November. "But, I am sure I'll get used to it. I have nothing but the fondest of memories." The longtime solon also didn't foresee a quiet retirement for himself. "Thurman will be around bugging you people for a long time." he told the Irrigator in November. He indicated that after leaving Sacramento he would lobby for both agriculture interest and various organizations including the retarded and senior citizens. Thurman surprised both his friends and state political watchers when he suddenly announced his retirement from government work last summer. He was later honored during a retirement party Dec. 2. in Modesto which was attended by various people from state dignitaries to local West Siders. The longtime county resident, during an interview last year reminisced about riding his horse as a boy from the other side of the San Joaquin River to downtown Patterson to watch movies at the Del Puerto Theater. We used to tie up our horses in front of the theater, he said. "From where I lived, we were only five miles from Patterson." Funeral arrangements for Thurman are pending. Washburn Edella 830324 np Mother of Local Man Dies at 101; A private graveside service was held Monday for Idella Washburn who died last Friday in a Lodi convalescent home after a brief illness. She was 101. She was born and raised in Sterling, Ill., and her father was a Civil War veteran. She married John Raymond Washburn in 1903 and moved to Needles the next year, later residing near Strathmore and Oakdale. They moved to Mt. Aukum in El Dorado County in 1940, and she was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1963. She was a member of the Oakdale Methodist Church. Edwin Washburn Dies at Age 75; Edwin Washburn, first manager of the Turlock Mosquito Abatement District and a strong promoter of programs for senior citizens, died last Saturday evening in Turlock at age 75. A memorial service was held Wednesday afternoon at the First United Methodist Church in Turlock. A private cremation ceremony preceded the service. He was honored in January by the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors for his dedication to senior citizen programs. He was a charter member of the county s Commission on Aging from which he recently resigned because of illness. In 1981 he was named the county s "Senior Citizen of the Year" for his service and leadership on the commission. He also was a charter member and the first president of the Commission on Aging. Washburn "pioneered mosquito control in this area," commented Steve Silveira, his successor as manager of the mosquito abatement district that includes the West Side area. He worked to establish the district in 1946. Born in Pomona, he graduated from Oakdale High School in 1926 and attended Modesto Junior College, Fresno State College, and the University of California at Berkeley and Davis, earning a degree in entomology. He later earned a teaching credential in agriculture and taught nine years in Reedley before joining the U.S. Public Health Service as a lieutenant. His responsibility was to keep malaria from being brought to California by veterans returning from World War II. After becoming the first manager of the mosquito abatement district, he served as a trustee of the Turlock Elementary School District, as a member and one-time president of the Stanislaus County Board of Education, and on the Turlock Recreation Commission. In 1959 he joined the U.S. State Department as a malaria eradication specialist, a position that took him to Liberia, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Thailand and Pakistan. He retired in 1972 for health reasons and became involved in programs for the area s senior citizens. He also was named to the TMAD board of directors in 1976. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Exchange Club, Turlock Masonic Lodge No. 395 F&AM. and the Stanislaus County Manpower Planning Commission. Survivors include his wife, Sarah Washburn of Turlock; a son, George E. Washburn Jr., of Turlock; two daughters, Mary Dell Latif of Turlock and Sue Lillian Washburn of San Diego; two brothers, Robert Washburn of Selma and Lewis Washburn of Patterson; a sister, Mary Cannon Borth of Lodi; eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He died early Saturday after a long illness. He was a longtime New York Life insurance agent on the West Side, and prior to that managed a farm implement firm. He died Saturday at a Modesto convalescent hospital after a long illness. He was 74. He was an agent in Patterson for the New York Life Insurance Co. for over 25 years before moving to Modesto several years ago. He was a member of the Patterson Masonic Lodge No. 488, and had previously been a member of both the Federated Church here and the Patterson Rotary Club. He was a native of Whitesville, Missouri, and before entering the insurance business was involved with the selling of farm equipment. The Rev. Eugene Brackney, former pastor of the Federated Church and now a Turlock resident, officiated at the Masonic service. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn White of Modesto; a daughter, Marilyn White of San Francisco; and two sisters, Dorothy Boxler of San Carlos and Alyne Marks of Missouri. She died Monday at Doctors Hospital in Modesto after a long illness. She was 24. A Patterson native, she was a member of the Assembly of God Church here. He was a native of Oklahoma and moved here in 1950 from San Diego. He had been a carpenter most of his life. He was affiliated with the Baptist Church in Oklahoma. Survivors include one son, Leonard C. Wright of San Jose; four daughters, Iris Nobles and Juanita McCurtain, both of Oklahoma, Odell Walker of Missouri, and Nada Adams of Ceres; two brothers, Jack and Wesley Wright of Oklahoma; 13 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and 20 great-great- grandchildren.
