King David L 840227 np Local Man Killed in Waste Way Mishap; A Westley man was killed sometime either Thursday night or Friday morning after he apparently drove his small Toyota pickup truck into the Westley Wasteway a quarter mile east of Stark Road. David Lee King, 33, a longtime Westsider, was last seen driving his new truck, which had only 2,410 miles, away from the Westley Hotel around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, according to California Highway Patrol officer K. Wyman of the Modesto CHP office. No one else was in the King vehicle. King was apparently driving on his way home along a dirt road adjacent to the wasteway when he accidentally drove into the steep ditch. The tuck rolled over one and a half times and landed on its left side at the bottom of the wasteway. Wyman indicated that King was apparently killed on impact as be suffered both chest and head injuries. The exact time of the incident is not known, but at 7:10 a.m. Friday, farmer Kenneth Anderson was driving in the area when he came upon the mishap, according to sheriff s detectives. Sheriff officers, the CRP and the sheriff coroner s identification unit arrived around 7:35 a.m. and freed King s body which was trapped under the truck. Two tow trucks from Haverstock of Turlock were dispatched to the scene and they spent more than an hour lifting the small pickup truck out of the wasteway. The lights were turned on and the battery was dead which led officers to speculate that the incident occurred sometime during the night hours. CHP officers say that the dirt road along the wasteway is used often by locals as a shortcut between main county roads.
