According to the Los Banos CHP spokesperson, a semi hauling beer and soda pop and driven by Alex Driscoll, 26, of North Highlands was northbound on I-5 at about 2:25 a.m. when it went off the right side of the road, took out the guard rail, rolled up the embankment, then flipped over and blocked both northbound lanes. An instant later, a pickup driven by Kerry Gatewood, 30, Sacramento, and carrying passenger Marion Thomas, 29, also of Sacramento, crashed into the semi. Seconds after that, a third vehicle, this driven by Valentine Sandoval, 19, Los Angeles and carrying an unidentified female passenger, 25, Los Angeles, two young boys – Antonio Garcia Valdez, 3 and Javier Garcia Valdez, 5, also of Los Angeles – 19-year- old Christobal Jaurequi, Los Angeles and another unidentified teenaged passenger crashed into the semi and the pickup truck. Sandoval and the female passenger were killed instantly. And still a moment after that, a fourth vehicle, driven by a Springfield, Oregon man and carrying his wife and three kids, crashed into the other three vehicles. The driver apparently spotted the accident, however, and neither he, his passengers nor his vehicle sustained injury. The victims were taken to various hospitals in Modesto. The driver of the semi, Driscoll, is in good condition. Gatewood, driver of the second vehicle, is in serious but stable condition. The passenger, Thomas is in fair and stable condition. Authorities have described the accident as one of the worst of the year and cannot explain the upsurge in fatalities and major injury accidents along that stretch of I-5 from Gustine to Westley. The mother of the 15-year-old boy, Alice Gonzales, said she and her daughter were about to go searching for him when news arrived he had been involved in an accident. They then drove to the scene of the accident on Ward Avenue where firemen were working to free the body of Carlos Gonzales from underneath the family s Pinto station wagon. Family members said the boy had been gone from the Gonzales home for only a short time. As soon as she discovered her son and the car missing, she went to her daughter s house, just up the street, trying to find him. They were about to go out searching when her husband, Pete, arrived and said the boy had been hurt. The Gonzales family live at 406 Del Puerto Avenue. The accident occurred about a half-mile south of the Ward- Sperry Avenue intersection. Carlos had apparently taken the car keys so that he and a friend, Arnador Chavez, could go for a drive, family members said. After the mishap, Chavez said, he got out of the car, found Carlos trapped underneath and ran for help. After getting no answer at a nearby house, he ran all the way to Carlos parents house, he said. If not for help from two passing motorists, the outcome would have been worse. Trant Monge, 40 and Richard Daly of Long Island, N.Y. were traveling southbound on I-5 and watched a pickup in front of them blow a rear tire, swerve erratically and plunge off the freeway. The pickup, with camper shell, was packed with three adults and three young children. Furniture and luggage was loaded in the back. "We saw bodies flying out as it rolled down the hill," said Monge, who was on vacation with his friend. The two pulled over and rushed down the embankment. A fire had started choking the accident scene with smoke and heat. Daly found two young girls lying dangerously close to the fire, and pulled them to safety. Monge grabbed the other and helped the mother who was lying stunned in a ditch. Holding the child, Monge led the woman up the steep 50-foot embankment. Two other adults, came up the hill on their own. "The adults were in shock," Monge said. "If the kids hadn't been pulled out they'd be dead." Simon Jose C 861104 p1 Grayson Man Found Drowned in Slough; Hopes that Jose Simon would return home ended tragically Sunday when the 53 year old man s body was discovered face down in Laird Slough.. A man fishing in the area discovered the body, caught on a snag, at about noon a half-mile north of the Grayson Bridge. A Stanislaus County Coroner s autopsy determined that the man had died by drowning. It was confirmed he was the father of six who had walked away from his Grayson home the early morning of Oct. 26. Simon, who had suffered from a mental disorder, was last seen alive at the family home at 8712 Laird St. His daughter said she saw her father get up and go to the bathroom at about 2 a.m. that Sunday morning. She fell asleep and when family members arose the next morning, their father was gone. Herlinda Simon and her two older sons carried on a week long search, notifying law enforcement officials and television stations and distributing flyers bearing Simon s picture. Callers from Modesto reported spotting a person that looked like Simon at the convenience store at the corner of Paradise and Carpenter roads Another apparent sighting was reported in Hughson, but the leads proved spurious. A Stanislaus County Sheriff s search by airplane also failed to find the man. Still family members, hoping for the best, believed Simon may have gone for a walk, become confused and couldn't find his way home.. Coroners said Monday the body had been in the water for six or seven days. Sheriff s Deputies are suspecting suicide because of the man s past record. The elder Simon had been out of work for three years since beginning treatment for a mental disorder at Emanuel Hospital in Turlock, Juan Simon said. He formerly worked at Foster Farms in Livingston. Juan Simon, 22, told a reporter Thursday night his father occasionally experienced anxiety and became disoriented although in the past every time he went for a walk he would return home. "Once in awhile he acts strange like he don t remember too many things," Jose Simon said "He probably couldn't find his way home". Lt. Felix Munoz of the Sheriff's Department said that during initial interviews last week family members indicated Simon had quit taking medication and had been acting bizarre just prior to his disappearance. Munoz said unless evidence of foul play surfaces there will be no investigation. Funeral arrangements are being made in Modesto.
