Deyto Avelino D 870604 p1 State Employee Murdered; Word of a grisly murder at the mouth of Del Puerto Canyon raced through the Patterson community early Wednesday morning. Although details were sketchy and few were being released by late afternoon by the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department, it was learned that a State employee with Caltrans had been killed by multiple shotgun blasts fired from short range. The dead man had not been positively identified by early afternoon Wednesday, but it is believed he was a Caltrans engineer working out of the Los Banos area. He was driving a small, state-owned two door auto. Unofficial information indicates a 12-gauge shotgun was used to fire as many as six shots into the vehicle from the driver s side. As many as four spent shells were observed on the asphalt roadway. The white car was in a parked position off of the roadway, heading in an easterly direction out of the canyon. One blast from the shotgun struck the windshield, while others blew out the passenger side window. The dead man was struck several times in the neck and side of the head. His age could not be estimated at the scene. The shooting occurred less than 300 yards up the canyon road from 1-5, and the auto was easily visible from the freeway. Sheriff s Sgt. Richard McFarren of the Detective Division said the murder could have occurred anytime between 3:30 and 5 a.m. Wednesday. It is believed a young man and woman from outside this area happened across the murder scene and notified authorities at about 5:15 a.m. They returned to the scene and were told to wait for questioning. The Patterson paramedics were dispatched to the scene, and the Patterson Fire Department was soon called to set up roadblocks on both sides of the state car. Also arriving soon after the emergency call went out was a state Department of Fish and Game vehicle with two officers. They apparently had been further up the canyon. Officials from the Sheriffs Department and coroner s office arrived by 7 a.m:, but no traffic was allowed past the death scene. Turned back from the east was a small school bus driven by Rosemarie Lara. who was headed to Frank Raines Park to pick up students for the Patterson Unified School District. They were driven to school by Pat Graham later in the morning. July 2, 1987 Patterson Irrigator identifies person as Avelino D. Grayson Cemetery 871029 p7 Joseph Robinson and Harry Winter Grayson Cemetery News Article: Modesto Woman finds ancestors; No one at the Irrigator contacted knew much about two temporary grave markers found underneath a mobile home in Grayson. The sister of a Grayson resident, said the markers were found underneath the unit at 8804 Smith Street when the trailer was moved this month. The markers etched with the names Joseph Robinson and Harry Winter were left next to a tree surrounded by piles of junk. The markers are the kind temporarily laid upon graves until a larger, permanent stone is prepared. The woman who called the Irrigator office said the stones may have come from Grayson Cemetery, a 110 year old facility which local historians and cemetery officials have been trying to restore to order. No other reason has been suggested to believe the two men were buried in Grayson, other than the fact the markers were found in Grayson. If Robinson and Winter were buried in Grayson. some might consider that an outrage, since the two men died within only the past 20 years. Robinson in 1968. Winter in 1969. Several long time residents of Grayson were contacted and they did not recognize the names. No permanent headstones bearing either of the two names stand at the old cemetery, but then, many markers are known to have been lost. Richard Brackney, superintendent of the Patterson Cemetery District, given the unenviable task of caring, for the Grayson yard, said many temporary grave markers turn up in the Patterson-Grayson area, perhaps because people are reluctant to throw away any sarelatives. Brackney, said he would drive out and have a look at the discarded markers. It was learned that there is no record of the names in district files. The two men were not burled at Patterson District Cemetery, but possibly they were interred in Modesto. The locations of many known graves at Grayson Cemetery are lost; in the absence of grave markers adequate burial records and updated maps. Burials are prohibited now because of the confusion. Wooden markers on older graves have been burned off by grass fires, and vandals have destroyed several headstones. Joe Perry, Patterson Cemetery-District secretary, said his office has no record of burials at Grayson Cemetery. Copies of burial permits dating back to 1917 are kept for Patterson District Cemetery, the local district s primary facility located on Highway 33 north of Patterson, but none exist for the Grayson yard. An 1897 map of Grayson Cemetery. showing 123 numbered plots, most of them unsold, was recently found. The map has been helpful in finding the location of several unmarked family plots and has been used along with burial records that do exist to reconstruct where many people were buried in the 19th Century and early part of this century. Efforts by John Azevedo, Curator of the Patterson Township Historical Society museum in Patterson, last week helped a Modesto woman find the resting place of five ancestors, one of whom died in 1941 and. ironically is listed as a past Grayson Cemetery Association director. A solid gravestone for Mary Endicott, great-great-grandmother of Bernyce Fisher of Modesto. marks the location of a burial lot owned by the Grummett, an early Grayson family. The 1897 map shows John Grummett as the owner of lot #54. Old flaking cemetery records on display at the local museum tell that John Grurnmett purchased the plot for $20 in 1879. not long after the graveyard was incorporated. He made a $5 down payment that year, and paid off the balance in October 1880. Mrs. Endicott s gravestone says she died in 1880, thus she preceded Fisher s great grandparents, grandfather, and great uncle William Grummett who, according to a family bible, died in May 1941. Records show that Mary Grummett in 1898, John Grummett in 1901, and Charles Grummett. in 1891 were also buried in lot #54, though their grave markers are now lost, and undisturbed grass covers their apparent graves. The only historical note on great uncle William Grummett is found in the final entry of the Grayson Cemetery Association s dilapidated minute book. The entry says that a meeting Nov. 3, 1914 William Grummett was elected to the association board of directors for a three-year term. Fisher remembers as a young woman attending her great uncle s burial in Grayson. and recalled that wooden headboards. marked the graves of all her ancestors. except great great grandmother Endicott. It was after I was married," said Fisher, who lives in rural Modesto, "It. must have been 1937 or 38. Fisher said another relative was buried in Tracy because there was no room in the Grayson plot. She said she would like to place a family marker in Grayson Cemetery, if she can afford the cost. Hernandez Martha 870903 p1 Woman Drowns in Canal; A 22 year old woman drowned in four feet of water Tuesday when the pickup truck she was driving went into a canal on Prune Avenue. Firemen and paramedics pulled the woman from the cab and performed CPR, but she was pronounced dead at the scene a few minutes later. Wayne Mize, a county road maintenance worker, believed the woman had been in the water for about 10 minutes "at the most." "She d been back and forth around here all day." said Mize who labored with fellow road workers Tuesday rebuilding a section of Prune Avenue, east of Elm Avenue. The dead woman, Martha Hernandez, was driving a white Chevrolet pickup on the north side of the canal. Traffic, including a school van that passed the death scene, was using the canal lane because of the road building work. Mize was driving a water truck when at 4 p.m. a man he thought was a ditch tender called to him and said it looked like a vehicle had gone into the canal. The pickup was resting upside down in the canal. Road workers tried in vain to open the cab door under water and then used a road grader and cable to pull the truck up on one side. "We saw the woman s body inside and waited for the ambulance," Mize said. The road worker said he saw the woman driving in the area most of the day, and believed she was a farm worker. A woman from the camp of dwellings at the end of Prune Avenue drove up the road and identified Hernandez's body. Hernandez, who listed a Marshall Road address, reportedly had three children. Hurtado Felipe 871231 p1 Two Killed in Shooting; Investigators are unsure why a local farm laborer began shooting at 8:15 Christmas night, taking the life of his wife and wounding a neighbor before turning the gun on himself. The grisly shooting at a labor camp at the south end of Locust Avenue sent sirens screaming into the night and left stains of bloodshed on the Christmas holiday. Sheriff's detectives found an ounce of cocaine stuffed in a sock worn by Imelda de la Cruz Roman, who was shot once in the head by her 35 year old husband Felipe Hurtado. Hurtado was killed by self-inflicted wound from a .45 caliber handgun. Patterson police who raced to the scene, found the couples blood soaked bodies in the bedroom of a cabin at the corner of Locust and Pomegranate avenues. A neighbor, 29 year old Jose Luis Silvera was shot in the neck and the Hurtado s 15 year old son was shot in the hand after trying to wrestle the gun away from his father. Silvera was in stable condition at Scenic General Hospital Sunday. The shooting reportedly started after Hurtado, his wife and Silvera were talking in a bedroom. The couple s four children were in the living room watching television. For reasons still unknown, Hurtado reportedly pulled a gun and shot his wife and then fired a bullet that passed through Silvera s neck. Silvera crawled into the next room to alert the children, Juan, the couple s 15 year old son, ran into the bedroom and tried to grab the gun from his father. The gun went off during the scuffle, wounding the teenager's hand. The father then raised the wepon and took his own life. Silvera was able to escape out of the house and reached help at his own cabin. Investigators, who found another loaded handgun just outside the Hurtado dwelling, have not concluded what initiated the shooting. We found drugs. said Sgt. Richard McFarren, "but I don t know if the shooting was drug-related." McFarren said he is satisfied with evidence that Hurtado did the killing and took his own life, but the detective did not reveal the content of the discussion that preceded the shooting. "There s no question about that," he said, confirming that Hurtado took his own life. "It was witnessed by the family." Questions of whether drugs had been consumed will go unanswered pending final autopsy reports. Toxicology tests will take at least 10 days, McFarren said. "We saw no evidence of ‘coke' being used inside the house when we were there, the detective stated. Silvera. bedridden at Scenic hospital declined an opportunity to talk with reporters Sunday. A hospital spokesman said he would probably remain under care for a few more days. Detectives believe the handgun found fully loaded in the yard outside the Hurtado cabin was dropped by Silvera. The gun had not been fired. The local labor camp, and an adjacent wrecking yard and used-car lot were formerly operated by John Hidalgo, who was convicted earlier this year in federal court on drug trafficking charges. According to officials of the Stanislaus County Drug Enforcement Unit. Hidalgo was using illegal aliens to smuggle drugs into the country from Mexico. He was arrested in Manteca after selling cocaine to undercover federal agents. Both Hurtado and his wife reportedly had lived in the Patterson area for 20 years. Both are natives of Mexico.
