Adams Martha C 880204 p3 Rites Held for Former Irrigator Employee Adams; Funeral Services for former Patterson Irrigator employee Martha Carrillo Adams were held Monday in Newman. She died Friday of a sudden illness. She was 30. Adams worked at the Irrigator from the fall of 1980 to the spring of 1931 as a weekend typesetter for the then Monday edition. She was a homemaker. A San Jose native, she moved to the West Side where she was a member of the Jehovah s Witnesses in Newman. She is survived by her husband Tom Adams and their daughter Alison, both of Patterson, her parents Jesus and Andy Carrillo of Crows Landing; a sister Leva Garrett of Modesto, two brothers, David Carrillo of Crows Landing and Andy Carrillo of San Jose, and a grandmother, Juana Carrillo of San Jose. Internment was at Acacia Cemetery in Modesto. Almquist Hanna 880405 p2 Hanna Almquist Dies in Turlock; Service Today; A funeral service will be held here today, Tuesday, for long-time Patterson resident Hanna Almquist. She died Thursday in a Turlock convalescent hospital following a long illness. She was 96. The service will be held at 1 p.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel in Patterson. Burial in Patterson District Cemetery will follow. She had been a Patterson resident since 1922 when she moved from Minnesota, where she was a native of Canyon Falls. She was a homemaker and a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church here. She also was a member of various church organizations. Survivors include two sons, Arthur Almquist of Patterson and Harold Almquist of Martinez; a daughter, Marian Dahlgren of Kingsburg; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Alvarado Esther Jr 880112 p3 Services Held for Local Woman Killed in Shooting; Services were held at the end of last week for Esther Alvarado, Jr., 22, who was shot and killed near Grayson. A Rosary was said Friday evening at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and a mass was held Saturday. The local native was buried at Patterson District Cemetery. Alvarado was found dead alongside Cox Road near Grayson at 1a.m. Tuesday morning. A 36 year old Patterson man, Jesus Clanez Hernandez was arrested later that morning and has been charged with murder. Alvarado lived in the Patterson area her entire life. She is survived by her son Ricardo Saldivar of Grayson, her mother Esther Alvarado of Grayson, father Sylviano Alvarado of Delano, brother Ignacio Alvarado of Grayson. and seven sisters Jennie Diaz, Silvia Alvarado, Rosa Ramirez and Bessie Delgado of Grayson, Maria Garza of Turlock, Frances Isquirdo of Patterson and Rachiel Castillo of El Centro. Alvarado was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Amaral Tony S 880412 p11 Tony Amaral, 98, Dies in Patterson; A Newman man who had lived on the West Side for nearly 50 years died last Friday in Patterson. Tony S. Amaral, 98, had lived at Foothill Manor here the past two months. A native of the Azores, he moved to the Newman area in 1939. A Mass will be said today, Tuesday, at 10 a.m. at St. Joachim's Catholic Church in Newman with burial in Hills Ferry Cemetery to follow. A rosary was recited Monday evening at the Hillview Funeral Chapel in Newman. He was a member of St Joachim's Church and the Rio Grande Knights of Columbus. Survivors include three sons, Joe of Gustine, Manuel of Crows Landing, and Tony Amaral of Salinas, a daughter Eva Hook Souza of Patterson; 21 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren and 14 great great grandchildren. Anderson Evelyn C 880426 p 13 Evelyn Anderson Dies in Stockton; A former Patterson woman, Evelyn Christina Anderson died Friday in her Stockton home at age 76. The Oakland native lived in Patterson from 1923 to 1942 and again from 1978 to 1986 when she moved to Stockton. From 1942 to 1978 she was a resident of San Francisco. She was a homemaker. The Rev. Richard Kelly of the Evangelical Covenant Church of Patterson, where she was a member, will officiate the graveside service at Patterson District Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. today, Tuesday. Armas Raul M 880630 p9 Graveside Rites for Raul Armas; A graveside service was held Tuesday morning at Lakewood Memorial Park for Raul Maria Annas, 77, of Crown Landing. He died last Friday in Newman. He was a native of Portugal who lived in the Modesto and Crows Landing areas the past 28 years. He was self-employed in the dairy business for 25 years, and was a member of UPEC in Turlock. Balcom Bessie L 880204 p3 Services Set for Balcom; Funeral Services for longtime Patterson resident Bessie Lora Balcom are scheduled for Friday at 7 pm at the Evangelical Covenant Church. Balcom died Tuesday after a brief illness. She was 90. A homemaker from Marmaton Township, Kan., Balcom moved from San Jose to Patterson where she lived for 30 years. She was a member of the Patterson Evangelical Covenant Church, the Covenant Women organization, and Rcbeccas of the I. W. O. F. She is survived by a son Glen 0. Balcom who spent his childhood in Patterson died Saturday evening in Cottonwood. Ariz., after a long illness. He was 62. Memorial services are set for Friday evening in Arizona. Balcom attended local schools in the 1940s before moving with his parents to Sacramento. The carpenter had lived in the Arizona town where he died for about 10 years. He was a member of the Baptist Church there. He is survived by his wife Bonnie, two children Phyllis Patton of Albuquerque, N.M. and George Balcom of Utah, and two grandchildren. Survivors also include his mother Bessie Balcom of Patterson, sisters Mary Smith of Calistoga, Lois English of Patterson, Evelyn Corbin of San Jose, Nancy Clary of Corpus Christi, Texas and a brother Glen Balcom of Twisp, Wash. Balentine James H 880913 p5 Rites Held for James Balentine; A funeral service was held here Saturday for James Harvey Balentine, 85, who died at his Crows Landing home Sept. 7. The Howe, Oklahoma native had been a resident of Crows Landing since 1944. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Grayson and Teamsters Local 853 of Oakland. He was employed for 20 years by the Dompe Warehouse Co. The service was held at the Hillview Funeral Chapel in Patterson. Burial was in Patterson District Cemetery. Bessey Verna 881011 p5 Former Patterson Resident Dies in Porterville; A memorial funeral service was held Monday morning in Porterville for Verna Bessey, a sister-in-law of Corlis "Corkey" Bessey of Patterson. She died Oct. 4 in Porterville. She was a native Californian. She and her husband Ray lived in Patterson for three years in the early 1960s and attended the Federated Church here. Besides her husband she is survived by one son, Paul Bessey of Chicago: two daughters, Martha of Sacramento and Harriet of Porterville; and four grandchildren. Bettencourt Rose 881220 p16 Mother of Bettencourts Dies in Gilroy; Final rites were held Monday in Gilroy for Rose Bettencourt, the mother of three area residents. She died last Friday in Gilroy at age 94. A vigil and mass were held Monday morning at St. Mary's Church. Entombment was at Santa Clara Catholic Cemetery in Santa Clara. Bloom Cedrick P 880609 p10 Former Resident Cedrick Bloom; Former Patterson resident Cedrick Parnell Bloom died Monday in a Turlock hospital at age 74. He was a native of San Jose and resided in Patterson for 14 years before moving back to Gustine where he grew up. He was a farmer. A funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Hillview Funeral Chapel in Gustine. Visitation will be today, Thursday, from 4-8 p.m., also at the chapel. Burial will be in Hills Ferry Cemetery in Newman. He was a past worshipful master of Hills Ferry Masonic Lodge and a past president of the Westside Shrine Club. He was a member of the San Leandro Aahmes Temple, San Jose Scottish Rite Bodies, Merced-Mariposa Scottish Rite, and Patterson Eastern Star chapter. He is a former director of the California Farm Bureau. He graduated from Gustine High School in 1932 and from San Jose State in 1937. Borrelli Mike H 881129 p2 Rites Held for Mike Borrelli, 71; Final rites were held here late last week for longtime resident Mike H. Borrelli. He died last Wednesday in Modesto at age 71. A native of Crows Landing, he lived in the Patterson area for 41 years. A retired farmer and dairyman, he was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Bowden James D 880322 p1 Patterson Man Drowns after Truck Goes into Canal; A Patterson man drowned Monday morning after losing control of his truck and turning over into a canal off of West Stanislaus Road near Highway 33. James Douglas Bowden, 26, was driving eastbound on West Stanislaus Road at a slow rate of speed, when the truck he was driving veered to the right, according to a California Highway Patrol report. A CHP spokesperson said Bowden then apparently over-compensated by steering right then back to the left and went off the north side of the road and flipped over into the canal about a quarter mile west of Highway 33. The time of the accident was 5:30, according to the report. The Stanislaus County Coroner listed the cause of death as drowning. Bowden was driving a 1987 Chevrolet pickup truck owned by the West Stanislaus Irrigation District, for which he has worked as a pump operator for 6 1/2 years. A supervisor reported Bowden missing at about 8 a.m. The sheriff's department was notified to check into the possibility of foul play; but a spokesperson, for the department said it was determined as a probable accident and turned over to the CHP for further investigation. Officials said it was not immediately known why Bowden lost control of the truck. Services for Bowden will be held Thursday, 10 a..m., at the Hillview Funeral chapel. The Rev. John Surratt of the Assembly of God Church will officiate. Interment will follow at the Patterson District Cemetery. Born in Patterson, Bowden is a 1979 PHS graduate, where he was active in athletics. He is survived by his wife Marjie Bowden of Patterson, and their daughter Brittani. Also surviving are his parents, Murlin and Shirley Bowden of Patterson, two sisters, Candy Banks and Melody Banks, both of Washington, a brother Don Bowden of Wasco, a grandmother Isabell Thompson of Patterson, and a grand father, German Bowden of Westley. Broggi John F 880126 p12 Local Native John F. Broggi Dies at Age 64; Patterson native John Frank Broggi died at the Martinez Veterans Hospital Monday after a long illness. He was 64. The World War II veteran worked 25 years as an oil distributor for Mobile and was a retired fire fighter for the local fire department. Visitation from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday will be held prior to the Rosary at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mass will be said Thursday. 10 a.m. The Rev. Steve Viau will officiate. Interment will be at the Patterson District Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Marie Broggi of Patterson, a son, Wesley Williams of Modesto, two daughters, Eleanor Broggi (sic Stafford ) of Patterson and Catherine Wilkins of Kingsburg, a brother, Robert Broggi of Patterson, two sisters, Laura Broggi of Patterson and Precioza Silva of Livermore, 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Brown Sammy G 880526 p3 Vallejo Man to Be Buried Held; A graveside service will be held at the Patterson District Cemetery next Tuesday at 10 a.m. for Sammy Gilbert Brown, Sr. He died Wednesday in Vallejo at age 84. He made Patterson his home from 1957-60 when he moved to Vallejo. A construction worker before retirement, he was a native of Tennessee. He also served in the United States Army during World War II. Survivors include two sons, Sammy Brown, Jr. of Fairfield and Don Tace of Vallejo; a daughter, Jean Douglas of Vallejo; a sister, Christine Brown of Napa; a brother, William Brown of Oregon; seven grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Buell Jason 881011 p1 2 Local Teenagers Killed near Tracy; A single car accident Sunday morning southeast of Tracy took the lives of two young people from this area. Jason Buell, 17, and 15-year-old Jenny McCall died of injuries received in the accident which occurred about 8:20 am on Durham Ferry road. Buell a Patterson high School student until this year whose parents Rick and Jean Buell live on San Antonio Road in Santa Clara County in the hill country west of Patterson, was the driver of the 1983 Camero. It left the roadway about a mile from the Kasson Road intersection, flew over a drainage ditch and hit a culvert. Both Buell and McCall were thrown through the vehicle's windshield, neither was wearing a seat belt. A second passenger, Rodney Hall of Patterson flagged down a passing motorist and summoned assistance from the nearby New Jerusalem fire hall. Buell was taken to Tracy community Hospital by ambulance and McCall to Saint Joseph's Hospital in Stockton by medical helicopter. Each died a short time later. Hall, also 17, was taken to the Tracy hospital where he was treated for a broken arm and pelvis. He was listed in good condition Sunday evening. Hall is a junior at Patterson High School. Jenny Renee McCall was a sophomore at PHS. A native of Eureka, she had lived here for 11 years after moving from Modesto. Survivors include her mother, Cynthia Cranston of Patterson her father, Wendal McCall of Ceres; two brothers, Daniel McCall of Patterson and Gregory McCall of Ceres; and an uncle, Dennis McCall of Patterson. A funeral service will be held here Wednesday at 2 pm at the Hillview funeral Chapel. Burial in Patterson District Cemetery will follow. Visitation is scheduled today, Tuesday, from 4-8 pm at the chapel. Final rites for Buell are pending. Buell Jason E 881013 p7 Service Set Monday for Jason Buell; Final rites will be held next Monday, Oct. 17. for Jason Eric Buell, 17. He died last Sunday of injuries received in a one-car auto accident southeast of Tracy. Also killed was 15 year old Jenny McCall of Patterson, for whom services were held here Wednesday. Another Pattersonite, Rodney Hull, 17. was injured and remains a patient in Tracy Memorial Community Hospital. Buell is the son of Rick and Jean Buell of the San Antonio Valley in Santa Clara County west of Patterson. He attended Patterson High School until this year and had been employed as an apprentice tile setter. He was a native of San Jose and had lived in the San Antonio area the past five years. The service will be held Monday at 4:30 p.m. at St. Phillips Church, 5038 Hyland Ave. In San Jose, The Rev. Jeny Drino will officiate. Burial will be in Chapel of the Chimes Cemetery in Hayward. Other survivors include a sister, Kris Buell, and a brother, Jarod Buell, both of the San Antonio Valley. Burris Clarence V 880405 p2 Local Man Dies of Natural Causes; The body of a man who apparently died of natural causes was found early Sunday morning in his pickup in the Prune Avenue area near the San Joaquin River. Clarence Virgil Burris, whose address was listed by the county coroner's office as Patterson, was 63. A daughter Robin Overturf, lives in Modesto. Burris Clarence V 880407 np Rites Friday for Clarence Burris; A funeral service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Lakewood Funeral Home in Hughson for Clarence Burns, 63. He was found dead Sunday in his rural Patterson home. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. A private burial is planned. He had been a Patterson area resident the past six months after living in Waterford since 1941. He was a farmer for 25 years with Braden Farms and was a member of the CB Club of Waterford. His hobby was fishing. Survivors include a daughter, Robin Overturf of Modesto; three brothers, Jess of Garden Grove, Earl of Waterford, and Emmett Bunris of Turlock; a sister, Maudie Hampton of Patterson; and two grandchildren. Cantu Albino G 881020 p8 Albino Cantu Rites Pending; Local services are pending for Albino C. Cantu, 77, who died Tuesday in a Modesto hospital following a long illness. A retired farm laborer, he had been a resident of Patterson since 1966 when he moved here from Texas. He was a native of San Benito, Texas. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a supporter of Virgen de San Juan de Valle. Burial will be in Sabastan Cemetery in Harlingen, Texas. Cantu Gloria 881101 p18 Local Woman, Infant Die after Birth; Final rites were held here Friday morning for Gloria Cantu, 23, and her newborn baby, Sisto Torres Jr. She died last Tuesday at Memorial North Hospital in Modesto of complications that developed after the baby was delivered by Caesarean section Monday at Del Puerto Hospital in Patterson. She was transferred to the Modesto hospital early Tuesday. The baby lived for a short time. A native of Phoenix, she had lived most of her life in the Patterson area. She was a member of Sacred heart Catholic Church. A rosary was held Thursday evening at Hillview Funeral Chapel, and a Mass was said Friday at Sacred Heart. Burial was in Patterson District Cemetery. Survivor include her husband and the baby's father, Sisto Torres of Patterson. She also had two other children, Mark Anthony Cantu and Melissa Torres, both of Patterson. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Guadalupe Cantu of Patterson, also survive, as do two sisters, Angie Rivas of Patterson and Sylvia Cantu of Turlock. She also had nine brothers, Jacinto Cantu of Turlock, Arnulfo and Israel DeLeon of Patterson, and Bennie, Roy, Guadalupe, Joe, Alex and Javier Cantu, all of Patterson. Carrillo Herlinda L 880303 np Shooting Victim Buried in Mexico; A woman who died of gunshot wounds here Feb. 20 has been buried in Mexico. Herlinda Lira Carrillo, 31, of Patterson was buried in the Contitlan Cemetery at Juchipila, with Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel in Modesto handling the arrangements. She was a native of Mexico and had lived here since 1975. She was employed at Patterson Frozen Foods. She is survived by five children Raquel Lira, Guadalupe Lira, Florita Lira, Fausto Lira and Jesus Lira, all of Patterson, and her parents, Magdaleno and Esperanza Lira of Mexico. Jose Jesus Reynoso Gonzalez, 33, who lived at the same North First Street address as the dead woman is being held by authorities in connection with the death. She also was known by the name of Consuelo Duran. Carvalho Crystal 880621 p8 Funeral held in Hayward for drowning victim; A funeral service was held Saturday in Hayward for a young Patterson woman who drowned last Tuesday afternoon in the San Joaquin River. Crystal Carvalho, 26, was pronounced dead at the Memorial Medical Center in Modesto where she was taken by Medi-Flight helicopter. She had taken her four young children to the river area north of the bridge east of Patterson after being told her power would be shut off. She was accompanied by neighbors Maria Carroll and Kelly Stanley, as well as their children. At the river one of the women pulled Carvalho's 5-year-old daughter Cristine to safety, but the woman could not be revived. Chan Montearony V 880809 p1 Girl Feared Drowned in S J River Cambodian girl - Montearony V. Chan; A 4-year-old Cambodian girl was believed drowned in the San Joaquin River Monday afternoon. The Medi-Flight helicopter fanned the muddy waters at Laird Park at 3 p.m. as emergency technicians tried to see the submerged body. About 10 members of the girl s family sat beneath a shade tree and watched the helicopter hover over the river. By 3:30, a body had not been found. The child s name was being withheld by Stanislaus County Sheriff s deputies. Teens swimming nearby said the Cambodian family was standing on a sand bar when she fell into the water. There was apparently a steep drop-off, and the girl disappeared, a Sheriffs deputy said. Greg and Mlke, Scalise of Fremont said they dove into the water and searched. Apparently none of the Cambodian men and women knew how to swim. Firemen from Westley and the Westport Fire Department were dispatched and failed to locate the body close to the shore. Several Indochinese people have drowned in the San Joaquin River in the past three months, and officials speculate they don't understand the danger of the currents. A man out pontoon fishing spotted the body floating in Laird Slough and alerted authorities. The girl fell into the river Monday afternoon at Laird Park and could not be found by swimmers who tried to help or divers from the Stanislaus county Sheriff's Department. The girl, identified as Montearony Van Chan of San Diego, was on an outing with local relatives her family was visiting. She was the widow of Ralph Crow, whose grandfather in 1867 established a 2800 acre ranch along Orestimba Creek near what is now Crows Landing. After marrying in 1915, the young bride moved into the two-story house located on the Crow Ranch, and lived there nearly up to the time of her death. Until a year ago, she held dinner parties in the impressive two-story house, which was built by James T. Crow in 1884. Family relatives said she continued to drive an automobile until her 94th birthday. Ada was the daughter of Lamott and Hanna Thornburg, pioneer farmers in Turlock. After graduating from Turlock High School, where she captained the women s basketball team, she matriculated at San Jose Normal College. Before her marriage, she taught home economics at Orestimba High School in Newman. and later substitute taught at Patterson High School. Her husband, who had been fishing at the scene had left briefly to get firewood. It is believed she may have suffered an epileptic seizure. Doe Jane 880225 p1 Woman Is Found Shot to Death; Patterson police making a residential security check shortly after noon on Tuesday found a woman dead in an apartment at 125 N. First St. The woman had been shot twice, in the head and chest. with a small caliber firearm, said Police Chief Richard Bull. Police said they were still trying to confirm the woman s identity Wednesday afternoon. Investigators say they want to talk with a suspect who has fled the state and is under observation in an Arizona hospital facility. Stanislaus County homicide detectives handling the investigation are en route to Arizona to interview the suspect, Bull said. The woman is believed to have been dead for two days prior to her discovery. Police officers were called to the residence at 12:11 p.m. by a relative concerned about the well being of the residents. Getting no answer at the door, officers forced entry because of the suspicious circumstances. Bull noted. Homicide detectives from the Stanislaus County Sheriffs Department were called in because of the nature of the crime. This was the third case of a woman killed by fatal shooting in the Patterson area since December. Imelda de la Cruz Roman, was killed by her husband Felipe Hurtado on Christmas night at a labor camp on Locust Avenue. Hurtado then turned the murder weapon on himself. Esther Alvarado of Grayson was found shot to death on Cox Road on Jan. 5. A Patterson man was arrested and charged with the murder. Doe John 880315 p1 Roadside Death Reported; A Mexican male was found; dead on River Road north of Grayson; Monday morning the suspected victim vehicle of a hit-and-run. A passerby found the body at 6:05 a.m. near the Lara Farms, Inc. ranch. The dead man was described as in his early 20's, medium height and weighing between 180 and 190 pounds. Investigators of the California Highway found no identification on the man, whose body was transported to the Stanislaus County coroner's facility in Modesto. CHP generally investigates hit-and-run incidents, a spokesman for the county sheriff's department said. Does John-Jane 880705 p1 4 Die in Crash on Sunday; Four people died and another was listed in critical condition following a one car accident early Sunday evening on Highway 33 south of Patterson. The northbound 1988 Toyota was not believed to be traveling at an excessive rate of speed when, for an unknown reason, it drifted across the roadway and onto the shoulder of the southbound lane. At that point it plunged into an irrigation ditch, hitting the opposite bank and flipping over. It finally ended upright next to a cultivated field. The accident occurred near the Marshall Road intersection about two miles south of Patterson at about 7 p.m. Three of the vehicle's occupants, most of whom were believed to be from a Southeast Asian family from the Santa Clara area, were killed instantly. Duran Consuelo 880301 p1 Murder Suspect Faces Extradition; A Patterson man is in custody in Phoenix, Ariz., where he fled after allegedly killing his common law wife. Jose Jesus Reynoso Gonzalez, 33, was arrested last weekend at a Phoenix-area-hospital facility where he was under psychiatric observation. He is awaiting extradition to stand trial for the murder of Consuelo Duran, 31, who was found dead in an apartment at 125 N. First St. last Tuesday. She and Gonzalez had lived at the residence for some time. Duran was discovered by local police summoned to the address by relatives who hadn't seen Duran for several days. Police found the apartment door locked and because of the suspicious circumstances, forced entry. Duran's body lay on the floor in the kitchen, officers said. According to police, Duran was shot twice, in the head and chest, by a small caliber firearm. Investigators speculate that the shooting occurred three days earlier, on Saturday, Feb. 20, the date Gonzalez was last seen in Patterson. Police Chief Richard Bull said an informant called police and told of Gonzalez' whereabouts in Arizona, where the suspect had admitted himself to the medical facility. Homicide detectives from the Stanislaus County Sheriffs Department flew to Phoenix on Wednesday to talk with the suspect. An arrest warrant was issued and Gonzalez was taken into custody. He died April 28 in San Andreas after a long illness. He was 65. Gibbens moved here in the late 1960's and was associated with C. C. Bessey in the Bessey Motor Co., the local Ford-Mercury dealership. About 1970 he founded the local Coast to Coast store, selling the business to Jack and Bette Hawke in the mid-1970s. He was one of several local businessmen who comprised a committee that founded the Patterson Apricot Fiesta in 1971. He and his family then returned to San Andreas where they had resided before moving to Patterson. There he was associated in a Ford-Mercury dealership with his father-in-law and brother-in-law. He was a native of Modesto and lived in Waterford one year before moving to Porterville. Gonzales Saul 880726 p2 Local Man Dies in Auto Crash; A 23-year-old Patterson man was killed early last Thursday morning in a single car accident on Eastin Road in the Crows Landing area. Saul Gonzales, a native of Cuamacuaro, Mexico, had been a Patterson area resident since 1984. He was a farm laborer. He was the driver of the northbound auto and apparently lost control of the vehicle, which then rolled over. The accident occurred about 1:45 a.m. Suffering minor injuries were Everado Mavaleon, Alder Cervantes, and Raphael Ortiz, all 21 and all of Patterson. Gonzalez Adolfo 881101 p12 Local Man Is Killed as Fire Engulfs Pickup; A fiery collision Saturday evening on Highway 33 claimed the life of a 74 year old Patterson man. Adolfo Gonzalez was burned beyond recognition after his Jeep pickup was stuck from behind and the gasoline tank ruptured and exploded. A 30-year-old Tracy man with local roots is charged with felony drunken driving and manslaughter. The accident occurred at 6:48 pm after Gonzalez turned north on the highway from Olive Avenue. A 1981 Pontiac firebird driven by Victor Lopez slammed into the pickup, ramming the read axle into the gas tank. CHP officer said the Firebird was traveling over 50 mph and accelerating rapidly when it hit Gonzalez vehicle which was traveling about 45 mph. The CHP earlier estimated Lopez speed at 80 to 85 mph. A local fireman witnessed the accident and called for help immediately, but the flames engulfed the pickup and killed the driver instantly, officials said. Gonzalez identify was not confirmed until Monday afternoon when dental charts were consulted. Lopez was taken to Doctors Medical center for treatment of minor injuries. Released later that night, he was booked at the Stanislaus County jail where he posted bail. Hiatt, died Sunday morning at her rural Patterson home. She was 96 and had lived here since 1913 when she arrived in the community as a new bride. A native of Golden, Colorado, she was the only girl in a family of five children. She met David Hiatt in the oil fields of Olinda, a Southern California community that no longer exists. They moved to Patterson soon after their marriage and attempted to purchase land on Lemon Avenue. A small one-room cabin was built on the property, and it was moved three times before the couple finally ended up purchasing other property on Lemon in 1914. Well driller Bill Hurd was hired to put in a well, which is still in use today. His charge was $39, Mrs. Hiatt recalled in 1981 on the occasion of her 90th birthday. The cabin was extended an extra 10 feet when their first child Donald was born in 1917; it was enlarged several more times as seven other children were born. The couple first had a dairy, then raised chickens, for many year. In the early 1960's they took out the chicken houses and planted walnut trees. David Hiatt died in 1964 at the age of 80. Since the birth of her first child, Alice Hiatt was a practicing Christian Scientist. Survivors include three sons, Donald W. of Madras, Oregon, Earl L. of Patterson, and Robert R. The condition of Ubaldo, who underwent surgery on an arm last week was worsening, however, because of internal injuries, Galvan reported. He walked outside a Turlock home at 65 E. Syracuse Ave. early Saturday morning, and police in that city are investigating to determine if he shot himself or was shot by another person. A small caliber handgun was found some distance from the body and may have been used in the shooting. McCall Jenny 881011 p1 2 Local Teenagers Killed near Tracy; A single car accident Sunday morning southeast of Tracy took the lives of two young people from this area. Jason Buell, 17, and 15-year-old Jenny McCall died of injuries received in the accident which occurred about 8:20 am on Durham Ferry road. Buell a Patterson high School student until this year whose parents Rick and Jean Buell live on San Antonio Road in Santa Clara County in the hill country west of Patterson, was the driver of the 1983 Camero. It left the roadway about a mile from the Kasson Road intersection, flew over a drainage ditch and hit a culvert. Both Buell and McCall were thrown through the vehicle's windshield, neither was wearing a seat belt. A second passenger, Rodney Hall of Patterson flagged down a passing motorist and summoned assistance from the nearby New Jerusalem fire hall. Buell was taken to Tracy community Hospital by ambulance and McCall to Saint Joseph's Hospital in Stockton by medical helicopter. Each died a short time later. Hall, also 17, was taken to the Tracy hospital where he was treated for a broken arm and pelvis. He was listed in good condition Sunday evening. Hall is a junior at Patterson High School. Jenny Renee McCall was a sophomore at PHS. A native of Eureka, she had lived here for 11 years after moving from Modesto. Meadows Raymond 881106 p2 Man Dies Shortly after Hit by Train; The man killed by a train Wednesday was identified as Raymond Meadows, 60. of Patterson. He died at Memorial Hospital in Modesto less than four hours after being run over by a southbound Southern Pacific locomotive at 4 p.m. in the area of K Street and Highway 33. According to police, the engineer said he spotted what looked like a bag of garbage or pile of clothes and didn't realize it was a person until he saw the man's legs sticking out. "It didn't appear to be a person until he was right on him," Sgt. Scott Warner said. The train, slowing to stop at Patterson Frozen Foods, was traveling approximately 20 mph. officials said. Consisting of eight cars and two engines, it stopped within 100 feet after hitting the man. Police speculated Meadows was either asleep or lying against the tracks. The cause of death was tentatively determined as massive heart trauma. Meadows right arm was severed. He was semi- conscious at the scene. The incident is under investigation. Navarro Christine 880317 p1 Navarro Girl Dies; Christine Navarro's fight for survival ended Thursday afternoon, exactly two weeks after the local tot was pulled from a residential swimming pool. Navarro, the 2-year-old daughter of Toni McCowan of Patterson died around 4 p.m. at Oakland Children's Hospital from complications related to drowning. She had been treated in the hospital's trauma unit since March 3. That afternoon, the young girl wandered into the backyard at 452 M St., where she and her mother were staying, and fell into the pool. Family members believe the girl may have been under water for almost 10 minutes before discovery. Local paramedics called to the scene were able to restore a pulse. In Oakland, she was put under care of a drown victim specialist, and kept alive on heart and lung machines. Drugs kept the child immobilized from the neck down, a common procedure in treating water accident victims. However, last week, the girl developed an infection in the lungs. By Wednesday of this week doctors reportedly had given up hope. Services are pending for the young Navarro. He was 40 and was a resident of Patterson. Arrested and jailed on a murder charge was Jeanette Denise Harmon, also known as Jeanette Pina. Pina was shot five times with a 38-caliber handgun. His body was found in the living room of her Ceres home. Also found was Gary Lasley, 34, of Patterson. He had been shot once in the stomach and reportedly was in good condition late in the week at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock. Lasley apparently crawled to a telephone, and called 911. A native of Modesto, Pina had lived in Patterson all of his life. He was self-employed for 10 years and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Rosco A M MD 880315 p14 Former Newman Doctor Dies in Walnut Creek; Longtime Newman physician A. M. Roscoe, a founder of the Westside Hospital, died last Thursday in Walnut Creek at age 87. Dr. Roscoe came to Newman in 1931 and with another physician Dr. James Thompson headed a private foundation that opened the medical facility in 1937. It then had 10 beds, and Dr. Roscoe operated the hospital until closing it in 1956 because of a shortage of nursing help. It soon reopened as a district hospital. Tatom Anita L 880412 p13a Local Woman Killed, 2 Others Hurt in Crash; A Patterson woman died late Sunday afternoon when she was thrown from a Corvette in which she was a passenger. Two men also ejected from the car were injured in the accident as well. As of Monday, the driver, Jose Gomes Viera, 35, of Patterson, remained in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Memorial North Hospital, while Nelson Velazquez, Jr., 20, of Twentynine Palms, was listed as stable and satisfactory at Scenic General. Anita Tatom, 37, died of head and chest injuries sustained when she was ejected from the car as it overturned on the east side of Highway 33 about 433 feet south of Spencer Road according to a California Highway Patrol report. CHP spokesperson said Viera, 35, of Patterson was driving at a high rate of speed north on Highway 33 when he apparently steered right onto the gravel shoulder. The spokesperson added that the driver then overcompensated to the left, crossed both lanes, and flipped the car into the dirt field, ejecting himself and the two passengers. Viera was taken by Medi-Flight to Memorial North, while Velazquez was transported to Scenic by ambulance. Winega Walter D 881213 p1 Elderly Man on Bike Killed Here; An elderly rural Patterson man died early Monday afternoon after the bicycle he was riding was struck by a truck at the intersection of Highway 33 and E Street. Walter D. Winegar, 86, was pronounced dead at 1:39 p.m. at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto where he was rushed by Patterson Ambulance. The elderly man, who had used his bicycle for transportation for many years, was east bound toward the Yancey Lumber Co. Yard when he crossed the highway. He was over halfway across when hit by a Jalisco taco truck that was being driven northbound by Jose Manuel Olivera, 23, of Modesto. Olivera was cited for being an unlicensed driver, having no registration in the vehicle, and no insurance information in the vehicle. Winegar reportedly suffered head injuries and trauma. His bike was in the inner lane of the roadway when struck. Investigating Patterson police office Scott Phipps said the accident is still under investigation.
