Ashlock Donna J 890309 p1 Donna Ashlock Dies; Funeral Is Friday, as Community Mourns Loss; Donna Ashlock died on Tuesday. three years after receiving a heart from local youth Felipe Gaza. Ashlock, 17, laid down for a nap at about 11:10 am. Her father. Raymond Ashlock, a city employee, later checked on his daughter and discovered she was not breathing. Dr. Michael Schorr was summoned to the Ashlock home, and he pronounced her dead at 12:40 pm. Raymond. who was home on lunch break, spoke with Donna briefly before she laid down for her nap. The unexpected death was attributed to an irregular heart rhythm, which cut off circulation to her vital organs, doctors said. On a list for a second heart transplant, Donna s health was much improved in the last couple of weeks and allowed her to stay at home. "She had been walking around, and in what for her was a good condition," said Schorr, the family s physician, "There was no question she was rejecting ( the heart ), but they did not consider her to be having an acute rejection." The cardiovascular team at Pacific Presbyterian Medical Center in San Francisco was shocked and saddened. "She had a deteriorating condition that warranted her being on the list for a new heart ," said Nancy Millhouse, a hospital spokesman, "but she was stable enough so she could remain at home. There was nothing that required her to be hospitalized." Millhouse added; "There were many people who worked with her the last three years. More than just physicians and nurses, they were counselors and friends," A funeral is Friday at 10 a.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel and visitation today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the chapel. Burial will be at Patterson District Cemetery. Donna s cardiologist, Dr. Andrew Fryer determined in January that a second transplant offered the best chance of Donna returning to a full and comfortable life. Since the beginning of the year, Donna had been in and out of the San Francisco hospital, on two occasions when a donor heart had become available. Early in January, Donna went up for a possible transplant, but the heart did not match. Donna, who wore a beeper dispatched from the medical center, was called in several weeks ago and underwent the preparatory examinations for the operation. However, she showed a slight temperature- 1 degree over normal, her father said- and the operation was called off. The danger in such cases is that the fevers cause, whether a cold or flu virus, could overwhelm the patient after the operation, Millhouse explained. "When one gets a new heart", Millhouse said "the immune system is suppressed so badly ( by anti-rejection drugs ) that whatever is causing the fever could be overwhelming, so the changes of recovery are slim." In February, Donna became ill and was hurriedly driven the 90 miles to the hospital by her father. Diagnosed with pneumonia, Donna was placed in a hospital bed, but she recovered quickly and was able to return-home. Since then, her health had markedly improved. Doses of the anti-rejection hormones taken by most transplant patients were adjusted during frequent checkups. Millhouse said that health rigors and the medications had "stiffened" Donna s heart. In that state, if the heart were thrown off rhythm, it might not be able to resume a normal beat and maintain. circulation, Millhouse speculated. The family grieved with friends and relatives who began gathering at the Ashlock home on Ranch Avenue shortly afternoon. "We went over to their home and paid our respects." said John Sanchez, Felipe Garza's brother, late Tuesday afternoon. Some members of the Garza family still live in the area, and planned a benefit dance to help the Ashlock's with medical costs. The dance, apparently still on, was set for April 8 at the FDES Hall, one week after Donna s birthday, on April 1. The Garzas said they were shocked by the sudden death. "It was something that nobody expected." Sanchez reflected. "They're both up there with god now. Maybe that's the way he intended." Sanchez said his brother's death on Jan. 4, 1986 was the hardest thing he ever dealt with. The family gained comfort from the fact that Felipe s heart sustained Donna for three years and offered a new chance at life. Donna and 15 year old Felipe were friends. The young student in the in the continuation program at Patterson High School cherished deep feelings for Donna, said Sanchez, retelling the story. Learning Donna was in the hospital and vitally needed a new heart, Felipe told his mother that if he were to die, his heart should go to Donna, Sanchez said. On Saturday morning, Jan. 4, 1986, the youth complained of headaches, and later that day was rushed to Del Puerto Hospital. Becoming comatose, he was transferred to a Modesto medical center and put on life support systems. Doctors pronounced him dead on Sunday, and a decision was made to attempt a transplant using Felipe's heart. ( An autopsy determined that Felipe died from a burst blood vessel in his brain.) Remarkably, the two youngsters hearts matched in size and blood type and the operation was a success. The story attracted instant fame for its romantic overtones, and the odd coincidence of donor and recipient coming from the same small town. Reporters from the national media invaded Patterson – this newspaper received telephone calls from writers in Europe – and flocked to Donna s homecoming in Patterson on Jan. 21. Donna arrived in a limousine. Well-wisher's mail poured in. Donna s recovery was rated excellent, allowing her to attend the American Heart Association s Valentine s Ball in Washington. D.C. that February. She met President Reagan and had her picture taken with the chief executive in the Oval Office. The excitement didn't stop. In March, she accepted an invitation to singer Michael Jackson s home in Encino. A television movie proposal followed. Soon, however, there were signs that her body was rejecting the heart. Rejections are normal in heart recipients the first year, but with Donna they persisted. Drug therapy designed to keep the immune system from attacking the heart apparently never was very successful. Donna was to experience nine rejection episodes, requiring frequent trips to the hospital. And last fall, Doctors began to consider a second transplant. In about 5 to 10 percent of the cases (continued rejections) do occur, Millhouse said. There is a good survival rate associated with second transplants," Millhouse added, but at the same time, there is a shortage of donor organs. All the bright lights and attention undoubtedly had a psychological effect, something Vera Ashlock, Donna's grandmother, noted soon after the operation, as she watched reporters and cameramen bustle around the hospital. "I m afraid. of this," Vera told an Irrigator reporter then, "that when Donna comes home, she can t take it." Millhouse seemed to agree. "Besides having her life thrown off course, the situation never allowed her to carry on in a private and normal way," the spokesman said. Despite health problems, Donna remained active in the past year. To make up lost school work, she started an independent study program with hopes of earning a high school diploma and later entering nursing school. In leisure time, she might be seen cruising with friends in her small gray pickup truck. Those close to her credited Donna with amazing courage, although her mother said in January that prospects of a second transplant scared her daughter. Declining to speak with reporters on Tuesday, the Ashlocks have set a press conference, today at 2 p.m. at the old city hall. A moment of silence was observed in the same chambers at Tuesday night s City Council meeting. ‘The family asks that memorial gifts go to the Donna Ashlock Trust Fund at Wells Fargo Bank 17 Plaza in Patterson. Donna is survived by her parents, Raymond and Mary Ashlock, a brother, Charles Ollar; a sister, Tracie Ashlock; and grandparents, Vera Ashlock and Sid and Naomi Brough. All reside in Patterson. Other survivors include Herman Elliot, her grandfather of Oklahoma; and Othelia Durham, her grant-grandmother of Yakima, Wash. Ashlock Donna J 890314 p1 Donna Ashlock Is Laid to Rest; Overflow Crowd Attends Funeral; High school students wore ribbons on their arms and the community mourned the death of Donna Ashlock, the local teen who rose to fame three years ago but lost her life last week while awaiting a second heart transplant. The crowd of about 400 included local dignitaries, students and community members who came to pay their respects. Those students who wished were let out of classes at Patterson High School and numerous city staffers and employees, coworkers of Donna s father attended the ceremony. The students wore pink arm bands since that was Donna s favorite color. Part of the overflow crowd stood outside Hillview Funeral Chapel and listened to the service over public address. After the service, they were allowed to go inside and file past the pink and white casket, adorned with matching flower and evergreen arrangements. Donna had chosen that type of casket, seeing one like it recently at a friend s funeral, her father Raymond said at a press conference on Thursday. Despite the presence of television cameras, photographers and reporters- confined outside in a roped off area on West Las Palmas Avenue- the funeral was a personal family affair, close friends and relatives taking part. Truman Hance, Donna s great-uncle and a former Pattersonite, served as one of two officiating ministers. He marveled at the passage of time, how it seemed like yesterday that Donna was a small child on her father s knee. He remembered, just as clearly, Raymond as a boy in Springdale, Ark, and how after church one Sunday the family s station wagon broke down and they had to hitchhike home. Other loved ones, Bonnie Saunders and Mrs. Danny Hance. sang three gospel hymns from the back of the chapel. It was announced that Donna s cardiologist, Dr. Andrew Fryer. took time off from Pacific Presbyterian Medical Center in San Francisco and drove to the funeral. The other speaker was Paul Fliflet, pastor of Calvary Assembly of God in Hilmar, who befriended the Ashlocks shortly after the January 1986 heart transplant that changed Donna s life. He described Donna as a normal teenager with great courage, who entered the hospital 12 times with heart rejections and other troubles after the transplant. "1 would talk with her at the hospital and on the phone." Fliflet recalled, "and. never once did she complain to me about her situation." The story of how local youth Felipe Garza died and gave his heart to Donna in doing so saving her life, catapulted both to global fame, but Donna remained a normal teen. ‘This is something that impressed me about Donna," Fliflet said. "She was so disarmingly normal. This thing had happened to her, but she said; "Well, this has happened to me, so let's get on with my life." The next three years were a struggle with bad health, however, as her body tried to reject the transplanted heart. For the parents, Raymond and Mary, it was one crisis after another, Flifet said. "To see the devotion and love those parents had for their daughter. It would touch anyone's heart. I hope we don't forget this family in days to come. They deserve our prayers. They deserve our help and our support." The preacher also recognized members of the Garza family. who sat reflectively in reserved seats in the rear of the chapel- the parents, Felipe and Maria; siblings, ,John, Tony, Margaret and Sandra; grandfather, Eusebio Maldonado of the Los Angeles area; and several little ones. After the service, Patterson police officers, serving as pallbearers, loaded the coffin into the hearse for the long procession to Patterson District Cemetery. A grave was reserved in a plot among deceased relatives of the Ashlock family. Donna was buried with a number of personal possessions, and tokens which friends placed in the casket, consistent with what Raymond told reporters on Thursday. The pallbearers and family members, in turn, placed a flower upon the casket, before it was lowered into the grave. From the beginning, the romanticized story of Donna and Felipe was perfect for the media. Felipe had a crush on Donna. Knowing she was terminally ill in the hospital and in need of a heart transplant. Felipe told his mother he would die and give his heart. On Jan. 4, 1986, the youth, supposedly in good health, collapsed from a brain hemorrhage and died a day later. The decision was made to replace Donna s heart with Felipe s. The heart was a perfect match and fit, doctors said. Immediately, the story was broadcast worldwide. Felipe went to his grave in a much publicized funeral here. While enjoying some special experiences made possible by all the limelight, Donna would never extricate herself from the story. By fate, the last words Friday were spoken at noon, and the graveside service broke up. It conveniently allowed television reporters to stage live interviews for the mid-day news broadcasts. Hance, one of the clergymen officiating at the funeral, quoted a psalm about the brevity of life. But in Donna s case it took on double meaning. "We spend our lives as a tale that is told." Mourners lingered at the scene, some weeping in huddles. A young man wore a uniform, David Brainard, a private in the U.S. Army, said he got leave from his station in Fort Knox, Ky. to fly out and attend the funeral. "I grew up with her; she was a close friend," said Brainard, a pink satin ribbon tied in a knot around his left arm. "The last time I was on leave It was for another friend's death. It starts to get to you.." Funeral director Mark Kuhn told reporters at a press conference on Thursday that for Donna's dignity no cameras would be allowed inside the chapel. The family turned down a media request to place a single discreet camera inside. Raymond said he hoped his family could resume its "other life." I thought I knew what the Garzas went through three years ago," he said. "But I didn't. When you walk in and find your daughter dead, it hurts bad." "Once we get through here, that's it," said Raymond, indicating his last interview with reporters. "I've got another son and a daughter to raise. Now we have to start a new life." Asked about Dr. Fryer's comments last week suggesting that the media attention had affected Donna's recovery. Ashlock said he didn't thing so. Donna, a shy, disarmingly normal youth, as Fliflet put it, saw her name immersed in a flood of words, and the publicity made possible some exciting experiences. For example, just weeks after the operation she went to the American Heart Association Valentine's Days ball in Washington, D.C., visited President Regan, and later paid a visit to her idol, singer Michael Jackson, at his home in Southern California. (The Ashlocks reportedly received a phone call and condolences from a Jackson associate last week.) But, as time passed, she fought a. more down-to-earth battle, with ailing health, and the struggles of a teenager. "She handled the operation well," said Henry Hesling, Patterson s former city manager, who knows the family well. "She was in and out of the hospital, but what happens is that she s a 14-year-old girl that has had a heart transplant, and she s trying to balance a teenager s life with this major event, and trying to balance the ( anti-rejection drugs ) and her diet and rejections and everything else." As for the publicity. Hesling said, "I don t think she wanted it. But after awhile she realized she had to accept it because of the inevitability of it." The media attention waned, and didn t really explode again until last January when it was learned that Donna was on the list for a second transplant. Donna said in January she hoped to make up lost school work through independent studies, graduate, and then go on to be a nurse. Her last hospitalization in February was for a flu-like illness which turned to pneumonia. Drained from working 40 hours a week, from worry over Donna s health and the family s medical debts, Raymond took ill and was admitted to the hospital along with his daughter. Both snapped out of their bouts. Donna was in good enough health to remain at home, wearing a beeper that would signal immediately if a donor heart became available. The second transplant was viewed as a ticket to better health and normal life, but also as another nightmare. She was scared to death," Raymond said on Thursday, telling how the beeper sounded suddenly one evening several weeks ago. "That one time the beeper went off at the supper table," Raymond said. "she was scared to death." The transplant operation was aborted because at the hospital it was discovered that Donna had a slight fever. Other than cardial problems, transplant recipients, must be in perfect health because anti-rejection drugs administered afterward resist the immune system and make the patient dangerously vulnerable to any common virus. Raymond said the last time he spoke with his 17-year-old daughter was on the phone at 11:20 last Tuesday when he called and asked her out to lunch. She declined, opting to take a nap. When he went home on lunch break, Raymond found her dead. "She was in bed with the covers over her and the phone beside her," Raymond said. I think it was a sad thing for the community," said Mayor Wade Bingham after the funeral. "I think the whole community was saddened by it. I hope the family can put their lives back together and put this behind them." "I hope we, as a community, can help them in any way we can," the mayor added. Bryant Ronald 890926 p1 Modesto Man Drowns When Boat Capsizes; A 55-year-old Modesto man drowned in the San Joaquin River Thursday evening when an aluminum boat capsized near the Stanislaus County fishing access east of Patterson. The body of Ronald Bryant was recovered by county sheriff's department divers who spent several hours Friday searching the river bottom just downstream from a small rapid. An autopsy was to be performed on the body on Monday. Bryant and his brother-in-law Charles Clark, 31. of Patterson and two other companions were in an aluminum craft powered by an outboard motor. Shortly after 9 p.m.. they decided to head back to the boat ramp. The two other adults were dropped at the bank to fetch a vehicle and wait at the boat ramp, while Bryant and Clark tried to maneuver the craft up rough water where the stream flows past a concrete-debris jetty near the east bank. The boat flipped. The two men tried to swim together to the east bank, but only Clark made It. He later told authorities he had a grip on his brother-in-law, but the older man disappeared when he let go to remove a jacket that restricted his ability to swim. Firefighters from Patterson and Mountain View arrived and searched about one mile of riverside in darkness. Medi-Flight flew overhead and used a searchlight to probe the waters. Emergency crews believed two individuals were in the water, before discovering Clark standing on the shore. The boat remained afloat and was recovered. Burgman Albert 890824 p1 Drivers Pull Body from Local Aqueduct; The coroner determined that a 43-year old transient whose body was pulled from the California Aqueduct Tuesday morning died of drowning, not foul play. Stanislaus County Sheriff's investigation were at first suspicious because of a gash on the dead man's forehead. But an autopsy determined the man had drowned, said Det. Mark Ottoboni. Abrasions on the forehead, knee, and feet probably were caused when the body carried by the swift current, scraped against the concrete side or bottom of the canal, Ottoboni said. At 8:30 Tuesday morning, two motorists spotted what they thought was a human body or tire floating in the middle of the aqueduct near Fink Road. Sheriff's deputies were dispatched and confirmed it was a body. County divers recovered the corpse at 10:30. The body is believed to have been in the water for at least two days. Ottoboni speculated the man probably fell into the south-flowing aqueduct several miles upstream, judging by the distance the body traveled from the time it was first sighted. The man's name was being withheld until next of kin were notified, but his name reportedly is Albert Burgman. "We don't know where he is from originally" Ottoboni said. "We're having a hard time finding someone who knows this individual or anyone who is related to him. Deputies found a wallet, still containing cash, in the man's jeans pocket. It produced Ids tracing him to the states of Maine and Washington. Burgman reportedly had served time in Washington on a firearm assault charge and had a trespassing charge pending in Santa Clara County. Ottoboni said the man was being held in Merced on the Santa Clara County warrant, but was released Aug. 15. Receipts found in the man's clothing indicated he had made purchases at Patterson stores between Aug. 16 and Aug. 19, Ottoboni said. California Highway Patrol picked up Burgman earlier in August alongside Highway 152 near Pacheco. The Wednesday Modesto Bee said a Stanislaus County detective questioned Burgman in Merced in connection with a string of cabin burglaries in the remote mountain area near the Stanislaus-Santa Clara County border. He had noted his 86th birthday Dec. 23. A standing-room only gathering at Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he had been a member, paid tribute to one of the brothers who founded Patterson's Frozen Foods, Inc. He was considered to be one of the pioneers in the frozen foods industry. The company, founded by Mario and Alfonson Ielmini in 1946 has grown to be the West Side's largest employer ( over 1000 people ) and processes some 250 million pounds of frozen foods annually. It is among the largest independently owned plants of this type in the country. A native of Ferno Italy, he immigrated to San Francisco in 1919, and there learned to speak English. He moved to Patterson three years later to work for the Patterson Bakery, and in 1919 bought the business with his brother, who had followed him to this country. It grew into a sizable business over the next 15 years. When Mario's allergy to flour forced them to sell the bakery business in 1945, they had already conceived the idea of freeing products, an idea born by freezing fruits used in preparing fountain treats in their bakery. Locally-packed frozen foods are now sold around the world. In addition to his successful businesses, Mario Ielmini was active in civic matter for many years. Made in Hwy. 33 Death; The California Highway Patrol has identified the Poplar man killed Oct. 28 when he darted out in front of a car headed south on Highway 33 near Marshall Road. Jose Luis Pio-Martinez, 26, was intoxicated and apparently playing chicken with on-corning traffic when he was hit by a car driven by John Galvan, 41, of Patterson, according to CHP Officer John Burger. Burger s report stated that Martinez was walking northbound on the west side of the highway and, according to witnesses, had forced one car to come to a screeching stop and another to swerve off the roadway to avoid him -- after which be reportedly laughed at the drivers. But shortly before 1 p.m. Martinez apparent efforts to play dodge with traffic ended when he flung himself head first in front of Galvan's 1979 Chrysler, which in an attempt to avoid the pedestrian, left 20 feet of skid marks that tailed off across the northbound lane and ended just short of the gravel shoulder. Witnesses reported that when Martinez saw the car coming his way, he began running toward it and when Galvan swerved the Poplar roan dived into the right-front of the vehicle suffering head and internal injuries he died from later. Martinez was declared dead upon arriving at Doctors Medical Center by Medi-flight. A crew and an off duty paramedic from the Patterson Ambulance District responded to the scene and administered first aid to Martin until he was transported. Burger said details about Martinez are sketchy, and based completely on what very little information was found in the man s pockets. The CHP does not know why he was in this area, nor have the investigators been able to find any family members in Poplar.
