All four were killed on impact as the front end of the bus smashed into the passenger side of the sports car. The bus wheels came down on top of the car. The driver, Gabriel Plascencia, 19, of Patterson was ejected. Joey Echevarria, 20, Jeanie Kucera, 17, and Dina Deckard, 17, all of Patterson were pinned inside the car, a CHP spokesman said. The brother of one of the dead youths said the four were returning home from a party in Stockton. The accident occurred at 3:30 am, near the Durham Ferry Road intersection. Kucera's birthday fell on Monday, and the youths told superiors they were going to a party being held in her honor, said Grant Casey, Deckard s grandfather. George Echevarria of 231 N. First St. said he last saw his brother at about 9 p.m. on Saturday. "Joey said he was going to a party before he left," George recalled. He said a cousin informed the family that the foursome had stopped at his apartment in Stockton late Saturday night. According to George, the cousin said they left after 1 am, and seemed alert. A CHP spokesman said the southbound Pontiac drifted off the road and traveled on the right shoulder for about 200 feet. The driver apparently over-corrected and the vehicle came back onto the roadway at a sharp angle, sliding into the path of the Greyhound bus. A person driving about 100 feet behind the bus witnessed the accident. CHP confirmed. Some 12 of the 15 passengers in the bus were taken to hospitals in Tracy, Manteca and Stockton for treatment of minor injuries. The bus driver, identified as Donald Richard Spivey, 29, was taken by helicopter to St. Joseph s Medical Center in Stockton. The Tracy Press reported that the La Mesa man was a "permanent replacement" driver hired by the company after the Greyhound strike began three months ago. The bus was on a regular route from Los Angeles to San Francisco and was to stop in Tracy. Both CHP and Greyhound were conducting their own investigations into the fatal accident. CHP is trying to determine if a mechanical malfunction caused the Pontiac to go out of control. A single unopened beer bottle was found at the scene, but CHP have not determined that the accident was alcohol related. Firemen from Tracy Rural Fire Department, located only a few blocks away from the accident location, responded to the dispatch and put out a small engine fire. Emergency crews had to use mechanical jaws to remove the three bodies pinned inside the wreckage, CHP reported. Lopez Adan 901127 p1 Local Man Is Slain, Dumped in Orchard; Co-workers at Mil s Bar & Grill said the last time they saw Adan Lopez, 23, was last Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving. On Friday, shortly after noon, Lopez was found dead in an almond orchard on Eastin Road southwest of Newman. His mouth was gagged and his hands were tied behind his back. Stanislaus County Sheriffs detectives said Lopez had been shot in the head with a high-caliber weapon and had received other gunshot wounds. Lopez had worked only three days at the restaurant since being hired as a cook. Co-workers were utterly shocked by news of his violent death. "He was really quiet and stuck to himself, but he was really friendly," said Candy Banks, the manager at Mil s. Banks said the last time she spoke with Lopez was on Wednesday when he worked the 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. shift. The restaurant was closed on Thanksgiving Day and Lopez wasn t scheduled to work again until Saturday. Banks said Lopez didn t give any indication he might be in trouble or that someone was threatening him. He just said that if I needed any extra help to make sure to call him," said Banks, who schedules employees for work. Homicide investigators believe Lopez was killed on Thursday or early Friday morning, but not at the location where the body was found. His body, clothed in underpants and a white t-shirt, was dumped alongside a private road leading into the orchard on Eastin Road near Pete Miller Road, just east of Interstate 5. Investigators said there was no evidence indicating Lopez was killed at that spot. His body was identified by taking fingerprints and matching them with prints on file at the Sheriff's Department. An autopsy was performed on Friday. County sheriffs detectives are also investigating the murder of a 35 year old Newman man whose body was found in July at an abandoned ranch not far away on Pete Miller Road. The ranch is in the foothills just on the other side of Interstate 5. However, authorities said there s no evidence the two killings are connected. Lopez had lived in Grayson shortly before getting the new restaurant job and recently moved into a small apartment behind his mother s residence on South Third Street, near Sperry Avenue, said Manuel Ramirez, a cook at Mil's and Lopez s friend for seven years. Ramlrez said his friend had lived in the Patterson area since childhood and attended Patterson High School. A few years ago, Lopez worked at one of the restaurants at the I-5 Westley turnoff, he said. He was a good. worker, Ramirez said. "I saw him a few weeks ago but he didn't say he was applying for a job (at the restaurant). (When he started work at Mil s) I came in and talked to him once in awhile.
